Red Dead Redemption Sold Nearly Twice as Much as Mario Galaxy 2

Echoing sentiments of Take-Two CEO Ben Feder about Rockstar Games' breakout hit Red Dead Redemption, Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz said today that Red Dead was so popular in May that it likely "cannibalized other title sales."

In advance of this Thursday's NPD results for May, Creutz forecasted a software sales bump of 16% for the month, noting that Red Dead probably sold around 1.32 million, nearly doubling an estimated 700K for Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy 2.

LOL, maybe if RDR's genre is "open-world Rockstar games". RDR's gameplay is one of it's weakest links.

And if SMG2 is the same as every mario since 64, RDR is easily the same as every GTA since 3, as well as games like Bully.

SMG2's strong point is gameplay and pretty colors. RDR's strong point is a good, immersive story. Both can coexist peacefully.

How the hell does Super Mario Galaxy equal every other Super Mario Game before it. 1. It is 3D (There are now 2 competitors super mario sunshine and super mario 64.)

2.Super mario 64 is all about exploration and running around big worlds. Super mario Galaxy is the opposite. You are working on smaller puzzle based planetoids.
Super Mario Galaxy is way more innovative and just a better game in general than sunshine.

Gameplay. super Mario galaxy has perfect level design. There is no way an open world game can compete.

Innovation:Combining a setting and a genre does not mean innovative. Innovation mostly comes from gameplay mechanics. And my god is Super Mario Galaxy 2 loaded with great ones. If super mario galaxy 2 is copy pate then how does it have a HIGHER Metascore then the original? They have made many improvements and have polished the game up to an almost unparalleled standard.

SMG2 did not just come out... it came out 5 days after Red Dead Redemption. Sure RDR did launch on 2 platforms but how many Wii's are out there compared to Xbox's and PS3's? Mario Kart for Wii sold something like 20 million which is the around the same sales as Call of Dukey MW2.

The Red Dead series is just now making a name for itself where Mario is very well known, I say its pretty impressive for almost any game to double the sales of any Mario game, because face is Mario sells like hotcakes.

But you need to factor in the fact that back in April 2008, Mario Kart Wii was also sandwiched in between GTA IV outselling the PS3 version on the NPD chart 1, 2, 3 respectively. Mario Kart stayed in the top 5 for months/top 10 for years. This article just set up a Reggie press release come June and July NPD...lol.

Actually , this should be a praise for Super Mario since it only sells on Wii while RDR sells on X360/PS3. No , I don't own Wii and I don't like Mario games being made over and over but this is the truth. Everytime a new mario game comes out it gets 10/10 in most reviews and it sells like hot cake.
Still a good achievement for Rockstar , a genre defining games (that's is not a pure shooter) sells million is amazing in itself. Good job Rockstar.

It's obvious Galaxy 2 will be above one of the versions of the game. May 23rd release date so that will still be awesome. I bet June NPD, SMG2 will be above both...lol. :)

Galaxy 2 will probably sell more in the long-run. Nintendo games tend to sell very well months, or sometimes years after they're released. Look at New Super Mario Bros. Wii and especially Mario Kart Wii. The former is still in the top ten, and the latter creeps into the top ten every so often even though it's been out for more than 2 years.

What ive noticed is that wii games like mario kart, new super marios bros and mario galaxy tend to start off slow.

As the year goes by, wii owners who own those games will have a party or gathering at their place and friends will come over. Generally during said event, the group will turn to playing the wii(only because the girlfriends/wives aren't really all that interested with gears, halo, god of war, mw2... blah blah) and find out how fun a mario game is, especially when playing with friends and collegues.

Unlike ps3 and xbox360, wii games are generally more competitive friendly(no nerd rage) with people laughing even at their own demise(dying in smash bros brawl, getting turtled shelled in mario kart and so on), what comes from this experience is the guests leaving with "hey that was awesome, I wouldn't mind playing some of that with the wife and kids at home or vice versa!" So they go out and buy it. Also most of the "casuals and nongamer" types would have a wii already so they would just have to go to the store and pick it up after work on a whim. Nintendo is all in the name of good natured fun with the casuals (even though unaware to the everyday person, SMG2 actually has some moments that are harder than most games on ps3 and xbox360).

Hence like what others have said here. I think Mario Galaxy 2 will probably last much longer than Red Dead Redemption in the long run.

P.S. You can actually get similar results from Little Big Planet, problem is the casuals will generally not have a ps3 and would just leave saying that was a cool game. Since most non gamers have a wii(working class novelty factor) it is far easier to acquire the latter(mario game).

red dead is one of the uglyest games i have ever seen sure its pushing more pixals and frames but the game is still dreadful to look at and the game is crapy srry to say a game should not take that long to start and red dead starts of to damn slow for my own good mario is a better game over all

give it about a year and SMG2 will out sell both PS3/Xbox versions combined.

Look at SMBWii its at 15m and COD:2 is about 19m combind on PS3/Xbox and its still selling well.

SMG is not as popular as some other Mario games because of it being more one player focused & more core gamer based. Where as say NSMB is casual/core with 4 player it was always going to sell better. Also people get dizzy with the spinning planets so in Japan the sales are quite low in a normally pro Mario environment.
