How Many Shooters Can Us Idiots Possibly Buy?

GameXplain Writes: "Yeah, that's right. Idiots. At least that's what the industry seems to think of us if we look at what most gaming companies dredged up for you this past E3. Seriously, do game publishers really think the only thing that can qualify a game as "hardcore" is if there are guns in it (I suppose boobies probably help too)? I love shooting someone's kneecaps out before crushing their skull with the heel of my jackboot as much as the next militant white supremacist, but even I have to say that enough is enough. Here's a breakdown of all the shooters we saw at E3 this year (and their respective selling points)."

Enough to fuc|( up the gaming industry.

Pandamobile5091d ago

Shooters are the backbone of the gaming industry right now, what the hell are you talking about?

qface645091d ago

ehm you do realize that isn't a good thing right?

NYC_Gamer5091d ago

the main reason why the market is lacking variety because everyone is making shooters

beans5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

I'm just curious what kind of games you think the industry needs?

edit eyeamnumber1: I saw that quick fix but no worries lol.

Pandamobile5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

@Qface

I never said it was. But they have the biggest appeal, and they typically sell more than other genres. That's why people make them.

SolidSystem5091d ago

whats wrong with shooters? would it be better instead of shooters we had mostly RPGs? then everyone would be sick of RPGs and be wanting more shooters.

as long as we still have developers pushing the market and such within the shooter genre and others we are fine.

EYEamNUMBER15091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

there's nothing wrong with shooters but i agree shooters being the backbone of the industry is a bad thing

-Alpha5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

There is nothing wrong with shooters.

Stop making them a scapegoat.

Like any other genre there are good shooters, and there are bad shooters.

Would I like to see more originality? Yes, but I'm not going to force anyone to do it. If I like a game, I'll buy it, and I do like myself a good shooter game.

And of course, "shooters" have a broad scope of genres: Car combat, FPS, TPS, action, adventure, hell-- nearly every genre can incorporate shooting.

I guess the problem is the FPS genre. But multiplayer is huge this gen, and it's fun. I like shooters and I play them if they are fun. I also enjoy a large amount of other games, but it's not my fault I buy a game that I find appealing.

NecrumSlavery5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

I was getting tired of shooters until I played killzone 2. Loved it. But it sucked back into COD... The horror. Then I quit again.

I'm into the FPSRPG though. Fallout 3 and Borderlands really brought some creativity back into shooters. Looking forward to Rage now, but for many reasons, not just a few.

I also think the FPS is the easiest to make realism. From a first person perspective, the world is easiest to craft. Most games from a third person view, look less realistic in nature. Few games have done well visually ie Batman, Uncharted, Gears, GOW, etc. But I find that FPS are generally more visually striking ie killzone 2, crysis, farcry, rage etc. Shooters are the dominate thing. They have intergrated that theme in every genre imaginable. But hopefully games like Alan Wake and Heavy Rain will bridge those genres and we can get more story driven games. Action is the core, but playing from a different element can be just, if not more, exciting. Like metroid prime or bioshock. Shooters that bring emotion and exploration to the table.
Upcoming shooters that look exciting are Fallout NV, Rage, killzone 3, and Bulletstorm

Garnett5091d ago

People are mad because their favorite genres (JRPG) and (RPG) are dead. That list is screwed up, it calls Harry Potter a Shooter? WHAT??????? You might as well say that CoD is an RPG then.

rkimoto5091d ago

Well, I like the FPS genre and buy a lot of them (including some other genres too, preferably RPG's and action adventure) and I don't consider myself an idiot, but if you do (article's author), then go ahead and stop buying them.

If the industry as a whole keeps doing them, well, that's because there's demand for them; if anybody is responsible for the "lack" of variety it's us the customers, but then again, I'm pretty happy with the options provided by developers.

N4g_null5090d ago

The problem is one day people will be tired of them and they will stop selling, then what is the industry to do? It's not like you guys like any thing that was made on the SNES any more LOL.

Seeing NSMBwii sell more than most games on the PS2, PS3 and xbox right now.

Some thing needs to get these developers to mine new ips.

This has always been what made console gaming better than PC gaming all the new games and the different types.

It's like eating canned beans everyday, cept they come in different flavors each year. Yum, they may coat it with a whole new face but in the end it's the same thing over and over.

I'd rather have something out of the norm that hasn't been replicated out the a**. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy them (buy them used for those naysayers), I do, but I could care less about the future of shooters.

Give it a break already and develop something new and daring.

yeah, that's kinda like the gaming industry now! crowded with jelly beans!

Jaces5091d ago

Bah, cannot relate jellybeans with negativity. They're too delicious!

badz1495091d ago

I prefer M&Ms over jelly beans any day of the week!

ElementX5091d ago

Did you try those Harry Potter Every Flavor Beans? Those were nasty! I tricked some friends at work, though.

badz1495091d ago

they REALLY exist?? you got to be kidding me!

FPS...

Now.. give me anything but fps.... TPS are getting really boring now too..

But i still love Uncharted 1 & 2. :)

Tony P5091d ago

If you're sick of shooters, stop buying them. That's really the only thing that can happen. And as more people start to get sick of the genre's current oversaturation, something else will eventually rise to take its place.

I avoid shooters entirely. Or at least try. It's kind of hard to do when the genre conventions worm their way into my niche interests like RPGs (Mass Effect, Alpha Protocol, FO3).

Blacktric5091d ago

Correct title: How many shooters can we idiots possibly buy?

Fuck this article.

Briefcase Joe5091d ago

Tell them how you really feel.

Omegasyde5091d ago

Shooters are getting stale.

There is only so many damn times before you wear them out. i.e. WWII shooters, Modern Warfare Shooters, Space Marines shooters....

The only game going in the right direction is MAG, Warhawk, and perhaps Mass Effect to an extent.

Hopefully the new Deux Ex revives the genre and actually inspire some sort of innovation from other developers.

ironfist925091d ago

i wanna buy crysis 2, modern warfare, black ops, gears of war 3, halo reach, killzone 3, resistance 3, bulletstorm

Just to name a few...

Nihilism5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

who cares how many games of any genre there are, no one is forcing you to buy them.

There are hundreds of games from all genres each year, I will still only buy 5 of each. The more games there are the more competition there is, the more innovations there will be.

For every 10 crap shooters there is one amazing shooter. That is the one I will buy every time.

You know whats good about market saturation?, game prices.

Instead of 1 major game every 6 months you get crap loads of games all the time, so the ones you don't buy at launch you get for 50% off in 6 months.

I hope every game I want is released on the same day so I will have no choice but to wait and buy them later...when they are cheaper.

Also, some of the best games are still shooters, nothing wrong with them.

Just don't buy COD games are MOH and every other yearly franchise.

Oh noes there is too much choice....whatever shall I do, I mean, it's my responsibility to buy every game that comes out right....the gaming industry won't survive without me...

They really have you suckers on a short leash...stop buying the crap games, keep buying the good ones...gaming industry darwinism will take hold.

Nihilism5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

double post

SaiyanFury5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

I don't know, I've been obsessed with JRPGs since the original PlayStation, the golden age of the JRPG. There was always something to look forward to. Nowadays people expect insane amounts of innovation and because of that mindset, the JRPG genre has suffered from mediocre scores. If a JRPG isn't radically different from another, it's ridiculed as "monotonous" and "stagnant". FF13 was the first JRPG to be lauded by modern critics as the future of the JRPG. Really? It had so few JRPG conventions like basic world exploration, towns, NPCs, EXP, and yet it was lauded around the world by the media. Yet us JRPG enthusiasts blasted S-E for removing just about everything that made it a JRPG. Shooters are fine, but there are far too many shooting games these days, the genre is overexposed. Too many games to choose from that it ultimately becomes the same medicore genre. I like the Resistance series, and that's about it as far as shooting games that I like. A weird mix of history/sci-fi combined with Insomniac's love of their Ratchet & Clank series. I love the series for that. But things like HALO and just about every other shooter out there stay within the same conventions. Traditional JRPGs stay within the conventions that work within the genre that appeal to us. To compare them to shooters is ultimately a waste of time. We JRPGamers might be a minority now (as we always have been), but we love our games. Come on Namco, where's Tales of Vesperia PS3 in the west??

otherZinc5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

There are millions of burger restaurants, only the best will survive:

Halo-the ring leader, quality, co-op, features, & more are what separates itself from the rest.

COD Series
Rage- with John Carmak behind it.
Rainbow Six
Ghost Recon
are all great titles that are expected to be great.

Killzone is some garbage & has to prove itself
along with a list of garbage that is trying to get into the market.

Devs just cant make anything & expect people to buy it, it must be good.

Enough to satisfy your needs without dismissing other great games from different kind of genres.

SpLinT5091d ago

Theres TM, GT5, Motorstorm, NfS, Blur, Split/second and plenty other car games

3rd person shooter, you got Gears, Vanquish , uncharted, socom, infamous, etc. i know theres much more but im not interested in them

RPG- theres tons, i was researching them earlier. Way more than FPS

platform games-- HERE is where there is a lack of but idc since those are easy games. Ratchet and Clank .. and I guess if you want more, buy a Wii. Plenty there.

The gaming industry is doing fine.

spunnups5091d ago

Hate to say it, but FPS is the most popular genre whether u like it or not. Frankly, im sick of them. PS2 still has the greatest library of all time. PS3 is catching up though, games like 3D Dot, LBP, Modnation, Uncharted, Warhawk...all equal variety, something we need.

Qui-Gon Jim5091d ago

Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, and Valkyria Chronicles.

Omegasyde5091d ago

okami, Ico also come to mind how varied it was.

spunnups5091d ago

I could never remember them all...Twisted Metal, inFAMOUS, Ratchet and Clank, the list goes on

BYE5091d ago

FPS are the most popular genre since what...1999?

It's time for a change!

Omegasyde5091d ago

Modnation is great, but the loading is really starting to get to me. Depsite being a kart racer that game screams fun.
However, the track creations are awesome and the game is best played with friends and a 32-pack of beer.
Mario vs. Ironman vs. Lady GaGA on a Redux of Wariostadium = awesome

Mini Mario5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

"PS2 still has the greatest library of all time."

Of shooters?? Yes.

Or all kinds of games... No. Because the snes would win easily as the best library of all time for all kinds of games. Even the Mega Drive would beat the ps2.

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya489d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney488d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled488d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist488d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin488d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled488d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE488d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi488d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE488d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
