Super Mario Galaxy 2 the Majoras Mask of the Mario Series

In a recent interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, famed developer Shigeru Miyamoto explained the development process behind his most famous character's latest adventure, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and he compares it to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Read on to find out why he believes that resonance is more important than story.

Majora's Mask had major plot differences from other Zelda games and Super mario galaxy 2's plot is very similar to other super mario games.

But that's not the point...

"Miyamoto is able to draw a parallel between his latest game (Super Mario Galaxy 2) and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask noting that both games were rare opportunities to re-purpose content from an existing title on the platform."

Miyamoto say that plots make the games complicated. He thinks that games are meant to be played and stories are to be told in movies and books. Thanks god not everybody thinks like him...

" Thanks god not everybody thinks like him..."

But im also glad there are people like him.
Lots of developers try to put way to much emphasis on story telling.
But sometimes a person like me just wants to drift off in the fun gameplay without worrying where the hell the character is going.

And i wouldn't say Zelda is story-less.
I mean Sure its usually "save the princess"(not always, some games dont involve her like that) but the story usually goes on about the legend of the triforce itself.

But then again, exploration and puzzle solving is what shines from all of it.

There needs to a be a good balance between gameplay and story-telling. With the Mario games, I've always felt that the story was a throwaway plot, but over time I've come to love the simplistic nature of it.

We always assume that Bowser is going to kidnap the princess and Mario (or Luigi) is going to be called upon to save her from him.

Then there's the Mushroom Kingdom and all of its creatures.

Super Mario Brothers definitely focused more on gameplay and less on story. The story merely consisted of Mario entering castles and fighting Bowser or his minions only to find out that the princess is in another castle. And this continues on for 7 levels until Mario reaches the right castle.

With SMG, the gameplay isn't as linear but the story is pretty similar. Bowser is up to no good and Mario needs to save people and collect coins.

Most any other game in any other genre would be criticized heavily for having such a cliche plot that doesn't change much over the course of the series, but Mario is special.

Yeah. MM was vastly different than the usual Zelda game.

ShinMaster5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

Still the best.

[edit] Followed by SMW2.

N4GAddict5103d ago

Super Mario World is the best 2D Marion, SMG2 is the best 3D

ThatArtGuy5103d ago

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

ShinMaster5103d ago

Agree with you. SMB3 is awesome and definitely on my top 2 Mario games.

N4GAddict5103d ago

MM is my favorite Zelda too.

Arnon5103d ago (Edited 5103d ago )

Same here. Majora's Mask gave me more memories than Ocarina of Time.

I bought some Link & Epona figurine for $14.99 that's still in the casing from Gamestop when they had a clearance going on way back when Majora's Mask first released.

Turns out the figure is now worth over $100.

You think like me Mahr. I keep hoping that they will make another Zelda in the style of Majora's Mask.

Theonik5103d ago (Edited 5103d ago )

I would be inclined to concur to this statement.
@The Great Mellon
As much as i love MM and it's my favourite i wouldn't want a similar game to be made. Instead take the note of it being different and do something new. the time mechanic is something that can be used again to great creative variety if you ask me though.

Well, I have a feeling I'll like Galaxy 2 better than the first, but I didn't like MM more than OOT.

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.

Pandora's Tower and The Last Story.

Switch needs less ports and more original games.

DefaultComment1205d ago

what it needs is not your opinion that's for sure.

northpaws1205d ago

Omg, you are so witty, somehow can provides even less value than my comment. I don't know about you, but I prefer Pikmin 4 over Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 9 over Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, BotW2 over BotW Wii U port, a new Donkey Kong instead of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze from Wii U...

But I guess I am just being weird here, who the fuck would want a new entry. /S

Neonridr1205d ago

Red Steel 1 & 2 Remastered Collection please. I adored the 2nd title.

Cuzizkool1205d ago (Edited 1205d ago )

I don’t think it would be so bad to turn Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort into a continuing franchise. The Wii isn’t around anymore, but we still get New “Super” Mario Bros, which the original “super” was based on the Super Nintendo console. Nintendo tried switching it up (heh) with 1-2 Switch, but that wasn’t nearly as big a hit. I think if they did an HD remaster of Wii Sports, or a new entry in the “series”, it would have immediate name recognition and would pull in some casuals, as well as some who want to get that sweet sweet nostalgia.

iplay1up21205d ago

I did not like Skyward Sword. I played till the bird part, and just couldn't do it anymore. It felt like a chore playing it. Also, I am a Zelda fan, and this is the only Zelda game I didn't like.
