I can't see the graphics probably by the way it's so dark and full of fog and also the visual is not to compare with Uncharted 2.

and why are people so hyped about this game?? all i see is the same gameplay in the darkness, repeating the same moves with the flare, or killing the enemies with flashlight + handgun. Except that, there are only some scripted events taking place... if this are the only gameplay elements in the game, than it is pretty weak... but i guess this game will be played mostly because of the atmosphere.

What gets me, and I'm being honest for what that terms worth given my fanboy status, is how the harvester is handled as boss battle. Instead of simply running over the everyman hero thrown into paranormal circumstances, it simply hits him doing some damage then backs up to have another go while hordes of shadow men take their whacks at him. If anything, this should be an environmental puzzle. With weaving and dodging out of the harvester's patch, getting killed instantly on a direct hit or just taking damage for being clipped, while maneuvering the shadow men into its path. Getting "the boss" to run under a spot light Wake's manages to turn on, or into a grain halo or fuel tank to trigger a massive explosion.

Just saying.

...Alan Wake actually looks pretty interesting. The only thing I'm worried about is the story. I see that it's going to be very atmospheric, but it also seems very repetitive. Of course, like on Silent Hill, repetitive can be done right...it's just not easy.

As far as graphics go, Alan Wake will in no way technically top God of War 3...there's just no way. The whole game of Alan Wake fits on the back of Gaia...how can you compare? It doesn't make sense. And the Kratos model looks 1000x better (well, that could be a little exaggerated...I'm a fanboy, remember) than Alan. Even when it comes to atmosphere and setting, GOW has Alan pummeled into submission. It's just the truth. I mean, think about it... The Intel Core i7 is the best processor on the market right now... Its best iteration has about 55 Gigaflops of theoretical processing power. The PS3 has 4x that amount. How could the 360 ever possibly compare? Honestly. Tell me. Numbers don't lie. We can quote devs all day long, but numbers don't lie.

On the plus side, Alan Wake really does seem to raise the bar on the 360 way above the other titles. I think it will be pretty slick for 360 owners. When the 360 gains 5 must-have titles, I'll probably buy one.

What bothers me is the methodology about the game.

The creators of the game have stated that they wanted a tail of thrills and suspense but from what I have seen the mechanics of gameplay are contradicting that. I've seen some screenshots, and a gameplay trailer recently, but honestly, nothing that was that impressive enough...to make me sit up and take notice...the character designs looked standard post-apocalyptic, the monster designs looked typical hybrid mutant monster thingie and (I thought) the animation wasn't super-ultra fluid *although* the lighting was pretty good (but then again we've all seen lighting and shadows...)

So why are ppl all hyped up about a game that is visually just average by today's standards and doesn't have the reputation and quality of an established and proven developer? (oh the other reason I am wondering what's getting people excited is that you've got BF:BC2, Bioshock 2 and Halo: Reach all out this year - but nothing about Metro suggests it's more/less impressive, so why all the love?)

Anyways, moving on, Alan Wake on the other hand is made by Remedy, the crazy motherf*ckers who brought us Max Payne and Max Payne 2. You can guarantee that this game will have a ridiculous (in a good way) story that keeps unfolding as you play the game. I don't have a 360 (have access to one when I want to play 90% of the time), but this would be my reason for actually buying one so I can get up and play whenever. Oh that and being able to receive MSN msgs while playing...if anyone can figure that out on the PS3 feel free to share :)

We've seen other vids where a piece of a silo smacks him and he brushes it of and we've seen his attacker hack at his shoulders with an axe but this was kinda ridiculous. He really stood up to a tracker and took little to no damage. I just don't get it.

To be honest my only real fears would be things like length or repetition which we have no way of knowing about for a while still. Really really good looking game though. Not even because of it's looks but because it just looks good in general. We'll find out soon enough though.

I watched the clip twice to see if the flash light/torch caused shadows to be cast on the harvester from the corn stalks and couldn't see it.

Did I miss it or is it not there?

Also, that harvester hit AW and he didn't get injured. I noticed the same thing in the other clip when the water tank smashed into him and he only grunted a bit.

I noticed that from screenshots a while back. Not every light source in the game casts shadows and not everything in the game that you see giving off light actually has it's own light source (e.g. the sparks from flares) since you can see sparks flying past a model without it lighting the other side of it.

edit2: yeah I noticed the harvester hit too. There's another video where a water tank or barrel of some sort hits him straight on without doing much damage. I think it'll make sense in the game when you play through it.

in movies, it covers up bad acting, bad set and bad choreographed fights (if any) and "dark scenes" are USUALLY easier to shoot

in games its the same thing.

now this applies to all games, like Doom 3, Res Evil 4, including KZ2 ( even I have to admit a lot of KZ2 is dark and gritty which adds to the look, if KZ2 was as bright as say U2, the graphics wouldn't look AS amazing (yet still amazing))

this applies to AW as well, but this of course doesn't mean it isn't graphically amazing (even best thing 360 can pull) but its something to keep in consideration (i do, and i consider it when looking at ANY dark game, be it Demon's souls, KZ2, you name it -

Uncharted 2 use more depth of field than Alan wake, so you see allot more visual and graphics in that case, but in Alan Wake i can barely see graphics or visual in dark with fog, i like the atmosphere really but it cost also the graphic department and visual, the lightning is very good in dark with fog. I see more lightning than how good graphics or visual is.

In day time you can see that the graphics are not that good quality also the visual, that's why this game based in dark with creepy atmosphere with minimal graphics or visual display, that's normal in a game like this where the lightning over run and make the game also very good. That is also what i mean, this game setup for thriller and atmosphere but don't exaggerate about graphics or visual you won't see in those atmosphere with dark.

Like I said in my post Shaman. Tech is not the reason I play games. What I do notice from your post is how you ALWAYS bring up the specs of the PS3 and 360 and try to downplay what the PS3 games have accomplished.

You can throw specs at me all day and honestly, I would have no idea what you are talking about. I go by games and what I see are games like Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, and so on.. You say the 360 can match what the PS3 can do, but I haven't seen one game that can match Uncharted Drakes Fortune on the 360.

The main reason this game looks good is because of the darkness and the flashlight. without having to load the high textures of everything, like uncharted 2, AW is able to load high res scenery wherever the lighting goes, and this means you can use it to very, very high standards one something as underpowered as the 360.

Take away the darkness, and it'll look crappy, i bet you 10000$

Unfortunately, it shows how great the PS3 line-up has been this year when you have nothing better to do. Figures, though. It goes to show you that people always say Quantity =/= Quality, but going by this years track record, it's all a PS3 fan can go by.

The only "fanboy" someone could call me, is a PC fanboy... so when bringing up the 360, a console which I have not turned on in at least a month or so, as bait for trying to cover up the weak line-up the PS3 has had so far doesn't really phase me. I play whatever comes out that looks good, and honestly, there's been 2 games this entire year that I've seen on the PS3 that I've wanted. 360, Wii and PC have great line-ups so far. Here's hoping for the PS3.

Agreed 100%! Why didn't the evil just take off in a puff of black smoke, leaving a knackered combine harvester. The whole disappearing thing just made it seem like a ghost tractor! Next level includes floating muck-spreaders and poltergeist rotary plows.

The graphics of this game look almost impossible for this generation of console hardware.
However, like i said in a previous post, there is not a big game in 2010 for the x360 who looks "just good".
From ME2 and SC:Conviction to AW, Halo:Reach, Metro2033 and Fable3, they are/will be all the graphical pinnacles of this generation.
Lets hope that the same will be true for their gameplay.

How much would be enough? Problem is that most of plot is discovered during daytime scenes and Remedy doesn't want ruin game experience with too much of spoilers. In that video you can see how daytime scenes look like and you can read from IGN or Gamersydes preview that there is a lot of gameplay during daytime.

The daylight time scenes are indeed shown by you, but it still doesn't look at good as Killzone 2. IE: Corrinth Landing map single player, both water and far off distances can be compared. But, Alan Wake's trailer is short and we can't see much.

We don't have enough daytime footage to, without a reasonable doubt, prove that Alan Wake is graphically superior in a measurable way. Measurable as in light sources and native resolutions. "Enough" would be the ability to point out which map or chapter and measure its light sources and resolutions.

How can Alan Wake proves that it is better graphically? It is like asking if day or night is better. The difference is literally night and day since what we seen so far is during the night. To win, Alan Wake needs to be measured against Killzone 2 in the daytime so both games are on the same page. We are unable to do that with Alan Wake right now.

I have defined all variable. None of us have yet to play Alan Wake and I conclude that it is not graphically better than Killzone 2 until further evidence proves otherwise.

Remedy has improved the graphics in last couple of months. The texture and lighting is looking better now. Their E32009 demo was good but not this impressive.

If they can make whole game like this then its a definite win. I can say its in league of U2 and Killzone 2 easily or a bit better. GOw3 is looking damn good only after the final product is released any such comparison can be made.

Also guys I know you might be saying the scale of ALAN WAKE is not large but the most impotant thing is that you can run through any level without any loading that is also a important factor to keep in mind.

I'm just messing with you. It's funny though, Sony has their devs going out in the media saying things like Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 are only possible on the PS3, maxing it out or whatever while 360 devs let their games speak for themselves.

I think Uncharted 2 is on another level than God of War 3. Judging from the demo God of War 3's textures aren't anywhere as crisp (look at the big fire golem or the surroundings), and it's lacking proper aliasing (lots of jaggies). Of course I haven't played Alan Wake yet but from what I've seen it's up there with Uncharted 2.

I have noticed the lack of textures also but do we have to put out massive amounts of textures on everything to make it look good? I mean ghostbusters apparently had tons of polygons and great textures, maybe it has more polygons than GOW3, but it doesn't look better. My point is maybe we look too much into the textures issue, I know for a fact that if I go walking around some cliffy areas I am sure to find the odd smooth rock, I can clearly see that the devs are using the PS3 strengths to compensate for some of the GPU's shortcomings, and whilst there may be the odd texture missing the overall effect looks fantastic, when I watched the GOW3 trailer I stopped counting polygons and textures because the game just looks fantastic, it pleases my eyes.

I said PS3 because I want to keep it traditional. Fact is I do have more 360 games over my PS3 games. Hell, I might just switch my choice to the 360 version this Tuesday. What does XBL have to do with FF13? I am not sure, but I thought it was single player only. I could be wrong. Reading your posts has made me revisit the idea of actually picking it up. Hmmm, but I will heed the warnings and go with the PS3 version. 1 disc, 720phd instead of 570p, true HD sound, etc. I can do without the "layer of grime" that is being reported on the 360 version. And @ssean, I know those plasma sets have high specs, etc. but what are the downsides to plasma sets? Handling and lifespan used to be issues, do they still remain?

Oh, and great choice on the LED Samsung set, I have been eyeing the same one. They are wafer thin and look nice as hell. I avoided the temptation just because I know the prices are gonna drop like mad, I think they already have @ least by $500.

In a few, those sets could be standard with wifi, bluray, hdds, 3D LED sets for about a grand. HDTVS will start being complete media centers by themselves.

Name one game exclusive to the Ps3 that runs from a proprietary engine that isn't linear, gives you the freedom of camera movement, and isn't scripted beyond belief dependent on graphically enhanced in game cutscenes sometimes blended with CGI that give you the illusion your playing some technical masterpiece.

Technical standpoint...Halo Reach would have taken on a dump on every FPS available for consoles if it was mandated to only be set up like Killzone 2. Linear, corridors, little to no physics, little to no color.

Alan Wake's engine looks like it would be more than capable of handling an Uncharted 2 setting.

Straightforward environment, some scaling, some scripted everything.

Castlevania lets you move the camera around and looks EPIC. Can the same said for God of War 3?

Technical standpoints, features and game design matter none to those blinded by games that strip them of freedom and features for graphical advantage.

I agree with your post for the most part, but KZ2 has incredible physics. It has some of the best volumetric smoke effects in a shooter.

And Uncharted2 does everything you asked for from a PS3 exclusive. I'm a straight 360 fan, but that doesn't stop me from showing appreciation where it's due.

Although, I also agree GoW3, while it looks better than UC2, isn't technically better than UC2. Not using a free camera can give you a lot of ways to squeeze in more polygons in any scene.

The videos that have been shown do not equal what some of you are saying about this game.

The daytime clips, no matter how early in the build they are, show 7 seconds of actual game play. Notice how there is fog everywhere, the water is undisturbed by the ferry, and the train that had a full load is now a train engine with a bunch of nothing. It may be an early build, but it looks nothing like the world ender some of you are calling it.

The nighttime clips show much more game play, but even less of the environment. Yes, it is probably for the atmosphere of the game. But that doesn't change the fact that you're looking through the sightline of a baby cyclops. All you see are objects in direct line with the flashlight, or random black. You're being attacked by a gotdamned harvester and you don't seem to care. That is the stuff that doesn't add up.

Why do graphics matter here? Some of the denizens of N4G seem to enjoy calling the next best thing better than things that have proven themselves to be the best. In this case, and with everything we have seen so far, they are wrong. The graphics are in no way a match for previous offerings by many a developer. The facial animations are not complete. To call them better than anything before it is plain crazy. The movement is stiff and unrealistic. To say it isn't is a bold faced lie. The visible graphics do not match the better games already released, played, and rated. The physics of the objects, the objects interacting with the player, and the objects vs. player vs. environment are clearly unfinished and in no way a match for the better games of the last 4 years. Be excited for the game all you want. But stop lying to yourself. It'll only hurt more if it doesn't meet what you're expecting.

Oh! That clears it up for me. The 7 seconds of gameplay is actual the entire video. You're playing the game when the camera is panning over the town. The game is played at night with daytime scenes that aren't actually daytime. No need for a sun. Fog is for effect. But the blurry stuff is probably the best graphics ever. Or it's fog. Sony has problems. PS3 has had one of the highest failure rates in console history. They don't have any games. Alan Wake has changed the face of gaming. It's the first game to not use cutscenes. I hear alot of fan I mean ppl talking about the fog and the darkness hiding the graphics of alan wake. From what I seen when it was lightning the game looked even better. Let us not forget that alan wake has daytime as well, all the action just happends at night. Therefore Remedy release these vids in the night action, not in the daytime where there is no action.

Also, never have I seen wind physics displayed like alan wake. The grass and trees look and move more life like.Obviously microsoft has released the "X-engine" and this seem to be the results. That would explain all the delays, as Remedy are finding new ways to improve on this game.Just as sony has released the "Edge engine" for games like U2 and GOW3.We see what that can do and have not seen the limit of the PS3.However, look for splinter Cell, Halo reach, Gears 3, and more to follow suite.
