PC World products of the year: Wii, 360 Elite ... um, no PS3

This one's just a little sad. PCWorld decided that from their gadgets and gizmos a plenty, their whozits and whatzits galore, they'd choose 20 products of the year (try to ignore that it's only May). The Wii made it in the top three, and stunningly, the Xbox 360 Elite made it on the list too. The PS3? Well, she ain't there, let's just chalk it up to that media conspiracy we discussed earlier.

The Wii earned the number three spot because it was "the first game console to get nongamers hooked on gaming, nominating it more than any other product ... Nintendo really has something with the Wii. Now if only we could find one for sale." Then down the list, but at least it's on the list, was the Xbox 360 Elite. PCWorld.com says, "The high-end 360 now ships with 1080p support and a 120GB hard drive, but it's the Xbox Live service, and the games and downloadable video on it, that make Microsoft's console really shine." What's wrong with PCWorld? As a famous woman once said, "Have you ever even heard of the Blu-ray? It's the future!"

Oh well, maybe with a little change Sony's embattled system can make a comeback on some actual year-end "product of the year" lists. Then again, it's gonna take something mighty impressive to defeat the Wii's possible DVD playback at that point.

"While these TWO compete on who's the star of the show,
golden legs there makes off with the dough"

Perfect description of the Wii.

DaTrooF6200d ago

i also agree with it

wildcat6200d ago

Fits perfectly, huh? Nas is a gamer! :P

TheExecutive6200d ago

You said it... products of the year and its only May. Why in gods name would the elite be on there? I dont get it. Its a fine machine... but in the top 20 products of the year?

btkadams6200d ago

haha gotta love shunning the ps3. except nintendo and 360 won't be laughing when ps3's game library is the most diverse and offers more variety to the average consumer. what is pc world thinking if the most powerful video game console ever released isn't on their list of products of the year. i mean really, the ps3 deserves to be on just as much as wii and 360.

ITR6200d ago

PC World probably isn't sold on Blu-Ray or the current games selection or the total sales of the console.

With new HD disc technology coming out in the next 2-3 yrs..BR and HD-DVD will be out of date when Teradiscs start poppin up.

TheExecutive6200d ago

They are sold on the 360's sale numbers?? To tell you the truth they arent that impressive. Especially if you consider they were the lone contender for almost a year.

WafflesID6200d ago

I agree, the PS3 is superior hardware compared to the xbox360. But I own a 360...why? GAMES.

I see 2 games for the ps3 that I'm slightly interested in right now. that WILL change later...but the fact is that as of right now, the 360 has a FAR superior library. I want to go buy a ps3 right now, I have the cash...just sitting here...but I just don't see anything thats worth buying the system for.

You can't put the ps3 in the list because of this.

TheExecutive6200d ago

ok... now we really can get into a debate... is it really the ps3's fault that its only been out 6 months? not really. The gaming library for the 360 is light years better, I agree with that. But almost all the games are from last year!!! How can pcworld possibly call a system one of the top products of THIS YEAR if they are basing it on a game library from last year? that doesnt make sense. This article doesnt make sense because we are only five months into this year... these guys are desperate for a story

Hmmm...what are you playing on the 360 right now that interests you? What I'm saying is what types of games are you interested in playing? Maybe there is a chance for direction and a shameless challenge invite on my part.lol Really, I'd like to know.

Erm. YES it is sony's fault. They could have delayed the release of the system. You HAVE to admit that they DID release the system prematurely just for the sake of having it out for the holiday season. Firmware wasn't ready, the online network wasn't ready, and most importantly THE GAMES WEREN'T READY.

And what difference does it make to someone who is just buying the system when the games were released? The 360 certaintly wasn't winning awards during it's initial release. The launch titles were good, but not system sellers. I didn't buy a 360 until GoW came out, and by then the library had grown to include some pretty impressive titles. And really, it's only been until recently when the Top tier games have started being released. Crackdown, C&C, GH2, GRAW2, GoW, Rainbow Six, etc. It's been jam packed with plenty of first person shooters, but NOW you are starting to get some good variety. And quite a few of the XBLA games are VERY much worth buying.

Thats why you buy a console because because games launched early in the system's lifespan are SUPPOSED to be almost equal (graphically, etc) to games release towards the end of it's life span. Unlike PC games where the graphics and, well, EVERYTHING can change drastically in the course of 6 years. You rate GAMES of the year based off of when they were released, but when they were released has no relevance as to which system has the superior library.

But seriously, RIGHT now, how could you POSSIBLY say the PS3 is a product of the year when you look at the library available. THAT is the bottom line. You can't look at a Blu-ray or HD-DVD drive during the first week of it's release and say it's a product of the year when it only has a few titles available. Same exact thing.

hehehe. I'm a broncos fan, so I gotta be careful around you ;)

It doesn't help that I already OWN a 360. If that wasn't the case it would be easier to talk myself into getting a ps3. But the games that are cross-platform that interest me, I already own for the 360, which leaves me to base my entire decision to system exclusives. Motorstorm looks neat, but I don't know that I would buy the system for that one. I REALLY want to play resistance, but again I need a bit more to make me buy the system. Ninja Gaiden, Lair, Final Fantasy, MGS4, GT. That's pretty much it at the moment. And of those, a Final Fantasy and MGS4 are the only ones that would push me over the edge into buying a system. Assuming MGS4 really does stay an exlusive.

I love racing games, but the 360 has the racing wheel. and an EXCELLENT one at that. I can't see myself playing GT without a force feedback wheel. That really is a deal killer for me. I bought a PS2 and a logitech driving force for Gran Turismo 2.

elliot_6200d ago

lol...pc world loves microsoft...know why?:P easy...
wii is the product of the year and ps3 is THE PRODUCT OF THE NEXT YEARS...

the wii is so "wiik" for me...

Those things are so dusty they make my mouth dry. You would have better luck plugging your PS3 controller into a rock.

Maddens Raiders even a "raving lunatic" like me knows the truth. The PS3 is like a desert mirage, you run you ass off to it only to find a dried up mud hole with the bones of dead animals.

Ps30076200d ago

Just pathetic after this long. Even I (check my profile) have gotten bored of spamming..

Well guess not actually :)

Obviously this guy is tard tastic!

Maddens Raiders6200d ago (Edited 6200d ago )

if this comment wasn't coming from a raving lunatic then it would be 10 times funnier than it is already. (a rock?lol) Gotta admit I chuckled a little, but it in the end - it kinda feels like laughing at a murder joke told by Charles Manson. C'mon xg, get real. Come back to the PS family of products. They welcome all back with open arms. Come on HOME everybody.lol Even you bladestar =]

Cheers

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1822d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere1d 23h ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 9h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney1d 4h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno2d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno2d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

2d ago
fsfsxii2d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno2d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
