X-Play Resident Evil 5 Review

G4tv.com writes:

"To say Resident Evil 5 is arriving under a cloud of anticipation would be the understatement of the year. 2005's Resident Evil 4 was nothing short of a revelation (and received X-Play's Game of the Year) in how it took a series that was getting seriously long in the tooth and reinvented it wholesale without making it entirely unrecognizable from it's predecessors. Four years have passed since its release and in that time the quality, ambition, and innovation in videogames has accelerated at an astonishing rate making the formula that Resident Evil 4 brought to the table less impressive by contemporary standards. Unfortunately, not enough has changed with RE5, in all level of its design, to help it keep pace with the new standards in gaming."

IzKyD13315552d ago

Wow, 3/5? I know according to Xplay, a 3/5 is an "average" game, but that's saying the same thing as a 6/10, which according to any VG website, is mediocre

The_Devil_Hunter5552d ago

Are you really going to listen to X Play, these guy do not know to to review at all.

DMC4 3/5
Dead Space 4/5! WTF?
Resident Evil 3/5??!! WTF!!

MasFlowKiller5552d ago (Edited 5552d ago )

i actually agree with the score they gave it,
even the one they gave to DMC4 and Dead Space,

i find the most trouble with their platform exclusive reviews but i do totally agree with their multiplat review, the same with gametrailers, i know they are fanboys but somethings in their multiplat review they occationaly sound fair

sonarus5552d ago

The score is correct. RE5 isn't a horror game its an action game and its a 6/10 in comparison to the other action games on the market

Mikerra175552d ago

I thought they would be all over this game
one of the only rating i agree with them on lol

Sevir045552d ago (Edited 5552d ago )

They dropped the ball on that, and So did the same with RE5. how can it be RE with no Horror? Thats the huge "WTF?" Dead Space was great and it was fresh. like adam said, when RE4 launched, there wasn't another 3rd person action horrow survivor game out that did the controls and pacing that way and it took RE to new hieghts. after playing 3rd person shooters now like Gears and Uncharted and even dead space where you are nimble and able to escape hordes of enemies, the stand and shoot slow aim at slow enemies gameplay looks pretty dated. Go play RE5 after playing dead space and tell me if you don't think capcom screwed up with a bad design choice in keeping those outdated slower than dial up controls even after you up the aim speed sensitivity.

Sorry but RE5 desreves that score. end of story. Go buy it though. i'm sure it's a solid game, Just not as good as all the other games survival horror games out there. It isn't better than RE4... whats worse, Capcom dropped the Horror off survival Horror, it's now just a 3rd person survival action shooter... brilliant!!!

Microsoft Xbox 3605552d ago

Sonarus is right on the money. RE5 truly deserves this score.

pwnsause5552d ago

DMC 4's X-play score is a score I can agree on and this is a DMC fan stating this. DMC4 did thing things that got me really angry as a DMC fan. as for Dead Space's score, I would of given it a 4.5/5.

Sangria5552d ago

Can't agree more with sonarus, that's exactly the point of Resident Evil 5. The game is graphically nice but kept its previous generation mechanics and lost in horror, thrill and fear. This is just a zombie shooter, and in that genre, this gen gave us way better games.

Panthers5552d ago

Are you saying that Dead Space deserves a 5/5? Because it is at least a 4/5

TOSgamer5552d ago (Edited 5552d ago )

X-play is full of it. Res 5 is at least a 4 out of 5. Especially when they gave 50 cent BOTS a 4/5. I have played both games and no way in hell is 50 cent BOTS a better game. Its repetitive as hell and it has its own control problems as well. I mean how many times are they going to have you shoot down a helicopter as a boss battle. I counted at least 4 frickin' time... RE 5 is a much better thought out game and is a blast in co-op.

morganfell5552d ago (Edited 5552d ago )

I have RE5 paid off but thankfully a site had the balls to tell the truth about it's shortcomings. I don't like Sessler or Xplay but I am glad they slammed RE5 for it's outdated game mechanics.

Dark General5552d ago

And to think i always got a ton of disagree's when i said Res5 always looked meh to me.

San anto5552d ago

A good solid review, capcom really do need to revolutionise the RE series.

Bnet3435552d ago

Well the score is right because they stated everything wrong with the game and it was quite a few things. To say I agree with the score I am not sure yet.

chaosatom5552d ago

Sony made a good move by having lots of Superb First party exclusives instead of relying on the third party ones.

Ju5552d ago

After playing the demo I can just agree with the verdict here. Its a pity because I its a very great looking game, and they might have nice content, but the controls ruined it for me. Quite a shame, I'd really at least like to give it a try, but the 10minutes demo didn't really want me to go through this pain again.

poindat5552d ago

Stop arguing over the damn score and argue over what matters - the actual content of the review.

It would be a lot more productive to say "I disagree with xxxx point they made" and we all argue over that rather than go "WAHHH they gave it a 3, I hate X-Play!!!!!!"

na2ru15552d ago

Simply too fustrating - my thoughts from demo. And add to that the fact they played and reviewed dead space.

SinnedNogara5552d ago

Three is a solid score, it is still worth purchasing. If you don't agree with the score, listen to all the other scores. GT gave it a 9 out of 10. Personally, I would have given it a 4 out of 5.

Arnon5552d ago (Edited 5552d ago )

1/5 = 1-39
2/5 = 40-59
3/5 = 60-79
4/5 = 80-99
5/5 = 100

So Resident Evil 5 is anywhere between a 60-79, according to X Play.

ThanatosDMC5552d ago

I agree with the score. I also agree with the score they gave DMC4... i mean, Dante's not even the main protagonist?! WTF! Also, Nero being a whiney little *itch didnt help.

Dead Space should have gotten a higher score for perfecting everything RE4 was suppose to be... it sure is way better than RE5 that's for sure. But i guess, it cant have a 5/5 since they only have 5 numbers to base a game.

barom5552d ago

lol I agree with X-Play as well actually. DMC4 was a big disappointment. Biggest yet this generation. Dead Space on the other hand was a nice surprise. Considering they don't give out half scores (like 4.5) I bet they had a hard time deciding between a 4/5 and 5/5. And to me Dead Space is pretty far from a 5/5. So I would've gone with 4/5 as well. Had it been a scale of 1 to 10 then it would've gotten a 9 from me.

SinnedNogara5552d ago

I see this very hypocritical. They gave Madden 09 a 5, but the game is very similar to the other games.

The Resident Evil series is known for the lack of the ability to run and gun. It is Resident Evil, keep it.

The game is TOO similar to RE4??? RE4 is X-Play's favorite game, EVER!! Now they are going kind of hypocritical.

The co-op was an experiment with Capcom. It had potential but was flauded.

Does Resident Evil have to be like Gears of War? No! Zombies aren't Locusts. Two different things.

The game at least deserved a 4. I think that this review was hypocritical and cranky! I respect Adam Sessler, but come on!! A 3!!

Why does Resident Evil have to evolve with all the other games!! It isn't like it is a Gears game!!!

barom5552d ago

There's a difference between "don't fix what isn't broken" and "if it's broken fix it". While I could to some degree understand RE5's decision to not have run n gun. I do NOT understand why they would do so when they're gonna drop enemies from all corners.

1up review said it best
"Forget Gears of War (or its sequel). Yes, that game has especially limber characters that can pivot and turn much more quickly than Chris Redfield ever will, but it's OK for Resident Evil to control like Resident Evil. What's not OK is not making the proper adjustments to the characters when the enemy speed and agility has been ramped up so much higher than before."

rockleex5552d ago

Konami seriously revamp Silent Hill controls? But still keep the horror. It would DEFINITELY beat Resident Evil.

All I know is, Silent Hill 1 is the scariest game I've ever played. Scarier than Fatal Frame and Resident Evil.

Megaton5552d ago

Vintage Sessler, vintage X-Play review, love it. I came in here expecting no less than a 5, especially since their #1 game of last-gen was Resident Evil 4. Sessler nailed the outdated mechanics of the game where they stand, unlike every other review I've seen for this game throwing it 9+'s. Kudos on this one X-Play, keep it up.

Parappa The Rappa5551d ago

Well. I guess I can put this one in the "rental" pile.

Ronick5551d ago

actually the other reviews u listed are spot on.

DMC is a 3/5
Dead Space 4/5 : which is a good score for a good game.

I do disagree with X-plays review of RE5. I personally dont think its a 3. Should be 4/5 IMO

AnttiApina5551d ago

That's because 3/5 ISN'T 6/10. Each game magazine/show has a different kind of rating system. 6/10 can be called "medicore" by some companies, but for others it's 6/10 "good". You really should check the criterias for the scores.

Wow flop much in terms of scores

AllseeingEye5552d ago

Glad I used gamefly for this. How could they mess RE up. Man.

IzKyD13315552d ago

Well, IGN, OXM, and Gamepro all thought it was good. Maybe i'm just biased because i'm a huge RE fan

Sevir045552d ago

Im not gonna stop or try to convince anyone from playing this game. But I do know that What Re4 did on PS2 and Gamecube was take it forward when other games in that action format hadn't gotten there yet. now that the current gen is ruled by Third person games like Gears, Uncharted and new comers like Dead space. what Re4 took to the table 4 years ago has been hugely surpassed and made better. RE5 brings new graphics and old standard PS2/GC controls and set pieces and not soo good story.. This game just doesn't do it like the others do and thats bad. you cant keep repeating the same things over and over and expect it to work, i wish they were this harsh will other games like Halo and GTA because those games are perhaps the biggest offenders of this crime.

Online co-op simply wont save it and niether will it's pretty graphics.

Thanks Adam. you have been saying what i've been saying for almost an entire year. I wont supprot Capcom with My sixty bucks for this game.. Not at all. but fans are encouraged to go after it. after playing DMC4 i know that RE5 would be more or less a PS2 port with HD graphics and new but minor iclusions to an outdated formula...

Trey4Lyfe5552d ago

well, I predicted it would get mixed reviews, but it'll sell well.

however the demo was dissapointing, I enjoy Dead Space more, just my opinion.

The_Devil_Hunter5552d ago

He didnt even mention the Mercs mode!!
Adam Sessler may know a lot about games, but he does not know how to review.

pwnsause5552d ago

RE has always been a single player experience type of game. mercs mode is just like an add-on for buying the game. the game lost the most important thing. IF you are a True RE fan, you should know this.....Its called HORROR. when you get the game tomorrow, you'll see it as you play it. The Controls and the horrible AI is another reason its points are getting Docked off.

Pixel_Addict5552d ago (Edited 5552d ago )

Resident Evil series name sake is in the horror genre. If Capcom wanted this to be an action game then it should have adapted a design and control mechanic that would work for it.

The controls were aweful in the demo and the inventory is just lame. Your AI partner did nothing but take ammo and health and cried for help way too often and never helped.

What I don't understand is why the Africans have to look like they came out of a 40's flick? Its not like when RE4 was in South America, everyone danced the Macarina and had fruit on their heads. Hell, they all just said the same lines over and over in Spanish. I was actually one to defend RE5 on the race issue, but now that i've seen more... wow, if that isn't sterotyping... what the fvck is?

likeaboss3025552d ago

There are still African tribes like that. It's not racist at all. Don't let Black Americans try to make everything out to be racist.

SpikeSpiegel5552d ago (Edited 5552d ago )

I dont remember black americans getting upset about the so called "racist" imagery in RE5. Please point that out to me...

Resident Evil 5 - 15 Years of Being the Most Misunderstood Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 launched 15 years ago today - and it continues to stand as a stepping stone from the good to the bad.

TheBrainZ79d ago

One of my favourites because of the co-op. Then Resi 6 arrived and the series nosedived further.

Knightofelemia79d ago

I enjoyed the game co-oping with a friend I know the game in solo the AI can be an idiot but RE5 is way better then RE6. I played RE6 with a friend if it wasn't cheap when I got I would have avoided RE6.

thesoftware73079d ago (Edited 79d ago )

5 was excellent, still play Mercs with my brother.
I would love a fully remastered RE:5, with some added, reworked content. The DLC for 5 was also excellent.

6 was awful.

CrimsonWing6979d ago

I never understood why the game was misunderstood. It was a fantastic game at launch and is still fun today to play. It’s as action packed as Resident Evil 4 was, yet that’s regarded a masterpiece 🤷‍♂️

chobit_A5HL3Y79d ago

it was "misunderstood" because they introduced co-op into the franchise at a time when people loved to have fake rage about co-op. like, you could play the game as a solo experience, but people chose to have their bandwagon rage because it was cool at the time lol

-Foxtrot79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

What the hell are you talking about? Fake Rage? Bandwagon? Come on.

You can play it solo but you are forced to carry around a shitty AI partner you have to micro manage. It wasn't as fun solo.

Co-op sucked all the horror, tension and suspense from the game because having a partner covering you was like a safety net. Enemy trying to sneak up on you? No sweat the AI will just automatically lock on, alert you while they shoot first telling you where they are basically.

It was the start of Capcoms fall with the Resident Evil series where it basically become an over the top generic action game which betrayed it's own survival horror roots. Least RE4 had a good blend of both but Capcom just went the wrong way with RE5, especially going off what they were going to do during the RE4.5 beta phase before co-op was added.

franwex79d ago

At least the game was a ton of fun tho. If the game was bad, the outrage would’ve been justified. They simply pivoted for a couple of games. At this point it’s bad because it’s called Resident evil 5? But if was called something else it would’ve been good? Please.

chobit_A5HL3Y78d ago

like i said: fake baby rage and bandwagon hate. res4 wasn't really that scary, either, and was already taking the series into more of an action-oriented direction at the time. 5 was a good game that people fake-hated because of co-op that you didn't even have to play lol hence the fake rage and bandwagon hate. i mean, it obviously did well enough for capcom to go ahead and make 6 the way they did, right? if 5 was so bad, they would have changed what 6 was during development. the difference is that 6 was actually just bad.

people "hate" 5 because res4 was so good, and 5 was just unfortunate enough to be its successor. like i said, 4 wasn't scary, either, and relied more on tension than horror, but it was already more of an action game. if you don't wanna like 5 because it's not scary or whatever- that's fine, but it wasn't meant to be strictly a horror game anymore at that point anyways. the gameplay was a lot faster-paced than 4, so saying that the ai helping you by potentially shooting someone that was sneaking up behind you is a moot point. there were more enemies that were more aggressive, along with newer threats.

5 isn't as good as 4, but it's not a bad game by any stretch.

RNTody53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

What? I always thought RE5 had fake controversy because it was set in South Africa and you shot a bunch of black zombies. I live in South Africa and thought the game was absolutely awesome, played the whole thing co-op with my brother.

@Foxtrot I think you're confusing the garbage Dead Space 3 with Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 was already a hyper action game and had zero fear factor other than the grotesque appearance of some enemies.

Remake of Resident evil outbreak as well as file 2. Same gameplay as the recent remakes. Choose what ever character you want to play as. With online co op.

DarXyde238d ago

I've been dying to see Outbreak come back for years.

Even RE Zero and Code Veronica would be excellent.

But for the love of God, not RE5 or RE6.

One they get around to the aforementioned games, why not remake the original Devil May Cry trilogy? That would be a much better use of time. At the very least, the first two games.

justsomeoffdude238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

code veronica should be the nest remake

neutralgamer1992238d ago

CV is good candidate for a remake but requires way more work for today’s standard. People look at CV through their tinted glasses. I think capcom wants to remake every game up till 6 and fix the plot holes so they can continue the series in one straight story path

Also not sure why only RE have to get remade when there are other capcom games that would be better suited for remakes like oninusha

DVAcme238d ago

That's PRECISELY the reason Code Veronica needs a remake. All the other RE games aged pretty well, considering the limitations of the time, but Code Veronica is the game that would be served the best bybremaking it because it feels so archaic these days.

neutralgamer1992238d ago

DVA

But it depends if capcom wants a big project or a quick remake. CV will require a lot more work than RE5

IMO they should remake other games before doing RE5

TheEnigma313238d ago

how many times do we have to say CV is the next best one?

CrimsonWing69238d ago

Nooooo! Why the hell can’t they do Code Veronica? I just don’t understand.

1Victor238d ago

RE5 is the closest to the bottom of the pot(a little smoky flavor but passable in a emergency) before we get to the burned crust that is 6 that not even the pigs would eat

CrimsonWing69238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Unpopular opinion here, but I enjoyed 5 and 6. I just think, in terms of Remakes, the classics are the one that should get the treatment above the modern takes of the franchise.

Don’t get wrong, RE4 definitely was an outstanding Remake, but RE5… I just get less excited about a Remake for that over something like Code Veronica.

RaidenBlack238d ago

Nope.
Rather remake other past Capcom & non-mainline RE games ... IF they have to continue churning out Remakes.
I'd rather want a new 3rd person RE spin-off
Dino Crisis and Onimusha Reboot
New IPs after Pragmata ships
