Some publishers reportedly questioning support for Xbox amid "flatlining" sales

That’s according to GamesIndustry.biz head Chris Dring, who said his takeaway from GDC last week was that he thinks “Xbox is in real trouble as a hardware manufacturer”.

PlayStation will be MS's biggest console platform to publish games on. They tried the buy-up and mass ban of multiplatform games and it's just ended up with them needing Sony for sales.

KwietStorm_BLM63d ago

That's the reason they bought publishers, to profit across platforms..

MrDead63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

...why were they restricting Bethesda games then? Seems a weird thing to do if "That's the reason they bought publishers", it seems more like they bit off more then they could handle and now MS is stepping in and taking over at Xbox as they need the sales.

S2Killinit63d ago

Its so ironic! Some of these xbox fans were soooo happy that MS was going to buy up the industry and deprive others of games they all used to enjoy. They cheered MS on, now it turned out that MS will need to go multiplat to pay for the cost of the acquisitions. Karma?

Cacabunga63d ago

If at the same time PS is going back to making single player games then it will be the only console of choice

Barlos62d ago

Exactly. How can't people see that their plan was to eventually drop hardware and go multi platform - essentially becoming the biggest publisher in the industry?

The disagrees you got shows there's a lot of people in denial over it.

BlackOni49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

If I remember correctly, they stated their recent Blizzard acquisition as a way to stay competitive with Nintendo and Sony, not specifically to profit across platforms. Of course, the end goal is always profits, but they've also made a bunch of exclusives that haven't made their way to other platforms yet, with more on the way.

I imagine the other acquisitions were for the same reason, but I could be wrong. They recognize that most of their offerings aren't to the same level of quality as what the competition is doing, hence the buyouts and porting older xbox exclusives to PS and Nintendo.

Didn't know Halo, Fable, Perfect Dark Gears, Avowed was goin on PS originally.

YourMommySpoils63d ago

Dude, just give up already, just throw in that towel.

MrDead63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Well as you guys don't buy games MS may be forced too for sales. New Halo won't be much good on such a tiny platform as Xbox, but they do have the option of PC and PS to keep their games going and hit sales targets.

ocelot0763d ago

Halo was actually suppose to be a Dreamcast exclusive. Perfect Dark started life on Nintendo, Gears at one point did have a PS3 build.

Abear2162d ago

No way those games wind up on PlayStation, sadly, they’ll be forced to run on Series S too and will be lesser games because of it.

There's no you guys here. As usual, here and on Twitter nobody ever makes any sense. Because internet.....

Uuh uh. Come out with new hardware only to put everything on PS and neglect their new console and forget console growth right....

Yep that makes the most sense in the world ppl. Some guy on twitter said the exact same ignorant thing. Riiight makes perfect sense....

@mommy what towel I don't work for MS? I know I make too much sense it goes over your head I know and you're frustrated because you want only one console in the market. One day you'll get it... Maybe....

BehindTheRows63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

My man, much of this dame doubt was cast upon us before those 4 games released outside of Xbox/PC and here we are yet again. Of course, Microsoft could easily put this to bed if it weren't true, but they don't. The smoke coming from whatever fire is real.

Going full 3rd party? Not quite so soon, but I'm inclined to believe the rumors of many more Xbox games coming. It makes sense as Xbox console sales have largely dried up and it would be silly to ignore the much larger userbases of Nintendo and PlayStation.

MrDead63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Oh, er sorry you seem to be taking this news a little rough. Don't worry though PC, Nintendo and PlayStation will keep the market afloat and hopefully MS will sell enough on other platforms to make a new Halo for us all to enjoy. .. Also don't forget MS has King so you can cheer that on, lots of profit!

Cockney63d ago

As usual it's everybody else's fault

VenomUK62d ago

@Lightning78 Phil Spencer has just said in an interview that Xbox has had a ‘brand pivot’ so that it will be available on any platforms Gen Z wants to play. This interview is confirmation that Xbox games have gone full third party. It seems he wasn’t ready to say it at the Xbox event last month, now he has soft announced it.

Not will be. Already are. Minecraft and Call of Duty already sell more on PlayStation than on Xbox.

MrNinosan63d ago

Hi-Fi Rush most likely also sold more on Playstation already.

KwietStorm_BLM63d ago

They "restricted" games to make their platform look like a good buy, knowing they could make a move at any time because they now own the IPs. But anyone who's been paying attention to even a little bit of their business model over the last handful of years has seen them moving in this direction. They've explicitly said themselves they want Xbox on as many screens as possible, Xbox being a brand, not hardware.

notachance62d ago

all their own fault

1. They trained their own costumers to wait for games to come to gamepass instead of buying from the store. I'll bet most of their customers have stopped buying games entirely since gamepass launched, with some high profile exception like Baldur's Gate 3 and Hogwarts Legacy.

2. They split their own SKUs into the weaker S and the more powerful X, particularly the weaker S needed extra effort to port games into it. With the sales flatlining there's simply not enough profit to justify the cost to do it.

Probably sooner rather than later at this rate...

Elda63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

LMAO!! Why did MS/XB even bother in the first place. Just wasted money.

Zeref63d ago

Publishing certain games on Playstation makes them more money not less. So how is it wasted money? Lol

mandf63d ago

68billion for activision will take a long time to show profit. It was a power move that backfired

Zeref63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

@mandf
Backfired how??

You think they actually thought they're gonna profit from a 68 billion dollar deal in a year? What are you talking about my guy?

mandf63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Zeref playstation makes up the majority of buying console players for activision games. There goes that money and let's give it out free in gamepass. If you don't understand that then you will never understand business. Playstation players aren't going to leave playstation for Xbox like ms thought or delusional xbox players thought. Every single ip 99percent sold more on playstation.

Ms started to create a monopoly and for once they aren't in control and got called out. Ms is the greediest of all corporations in this world. A lot of gamers aren't blind. I wont buy any ms produced game.

You are watching ms bow out of the console business. They couldn't bully bribe or buy their way into dominance. And now ms is very shortly going to held accountable for a lost venture. The entirety of ms console has never showed a real profit. It has been subsidized by ms. Literally a waste of money. Today they are worse then where they started..

Year 3 or 4 of this gen and they still haven't reached 30million sold. Where is all this future profit coming from.

shinoff218363d ago

With ms signing that 10 year deal with call of duty. I bet they knew from the jump that they were going this route. Probably trying to figure out the best way to break it to its base. Sure 68 billion can't be made back in a year but some xbox players are jumping ship now. So what happens in 5 years when console sales dwindle to nothing. Answer the same exact thing that's happening now. You can paint rainbows and butterflies all you want but ms will be releasing even more on ps and switch. At this point it's a dud

StormSnooper62d ago

They have spent more than they have earned in 4 generations.

I think Elda is referring to getting into hardware in the first place. I don't agree. We need more hardware competition, IMHO.

mandf63d ago

I respectfully disagree. Go play Nintendo switch games tell me you think they are reviewed on the same scale as ms and ps.

Now think of it this way if ms was the only console and switch and ps5 games were on xbox. The standard of reviews changes. Nintendo has some great games let's get that out the way. Zelda has no speech in this current day. If final fantasy did this they would get review bombed and gamers would riot.

Sea of thrives when it it released has 4 enemies and a kraken that has no body hit metacritic at 7. If that game wasn't exclusive if would been review bombed.

Dragons dogma 2 just released and all we here is framerate problems and let destroy the game through the internet. Name one Bethesda gamethat never had framrate problems we overlook it.

3 consoles create a corrupt and unbalanced conversations. If a company only has to produce one not 5 games they can optimize and make a better game. Game development becomes cheaper and quality becomes better if zelda was on every platform it would become a better game. Reviewers wouldn't gloss over low poly textures , no speech, no mo cap and other industry standardized game elements.

Almost every xbox game in the last 4 years has been hyped to no end. Xbox last 2 exclusive were touted as games of the generation months before release. Then reviewed and low and behold average at best go look at the disparity of the reviews 10s to 2s. That's fishy. I'm a playstation fan and I read all the reviews on godr and I heard from some reviewers was more of the same as if it was a negative . Halo nor zelda has been called out for that. If there was only one console for those 3 games. You would see the reviewers hold games to higher or the same standards.

Competition is good when games developers go against each with same exact standard halo trying to out do gow is better on the same console instead of console vs console.

The more consoles you have the more watered down games, reviews and standards you have.

Petebloodyonion63d ago

Quick question Chief didn't you cancel this story earlier on?
https://n4g.com/news/259203...
What makes this one valid versus the previous one that was posted this morning?
Just curious

Petebloodyonion63d ago

@Mandif
I disagree the more consoles you have = the less chance an Apple situation will happen
Tell me Do you think that if Sony or MS were alone you would have backward compatibility?
Would you get a free upgrade patch?
Do you believe that Sony or MS would try making games? Just look at Valve, Epic, or simply Meta with Quest which only produces games when potential VR competitors are around (PSVR2 and Apple).
What would stop Sony from removing your digital rights on an older platform and asking you to get the newer Playstation to keep them?
Or how about MS with DRM like 2013?

mandf63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

@pete

Yes I do. Couple thousand games from last gen is profit and is stupidity if you don't. Apple literally has a small blueprint in gaming. None of the big 3 has ever charged you backward compatability.

Digital rights are a joke and a whole other can of worms.30yrs from now none of our current software will compatible with future hardware. If it is in what form. The truest way to preserve you game collection is physical games.digital rights what a joke. Read your licensing agreement. Are you going to buy a car and pay for access to your headlights once month it's just 50cents for the radio. We already lost the war on digital rights. Physical is the way to go. Playstation gamers are buying physical games that's called demand. Gamepass has made best buy and wal mart to not sell xbox games anymore. It's a gotcha moment once it's all digital we will be renting games by the month or candy crush 5dollars for 5 lives. Digital sucks and is only going to get worse once congress start taxing gamers for high internet usage. Like I said a big can of worms. Sorry man we need a couple hours to discuss this in depth.

By the way drm and digital rights are really different my other comment is about quality of games and competition between them not quality of hardware maker

Not exactly because Microsoft is already bringing everything to PC as well. This is about bring games to other console platforms. I would only expect Sony to release certain games on Xbox like MLB and Marathon...

GhostScholar63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

They're slowly becoming a 3rd party publisher.

VoiceMale63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

what'cha mean SLOWLY?
They're already a 3rd party publisher...been that way for years.
or maybe you are suggesting ONLY a 3rd party publisher...then the answer is NO
and to be fair both consoles have their IPs on PC which makes them 3rd party by definition.

Nintendo alone remains solely an ONLY for console with 1st party IPs

i know a lot of ppl will be upset at this but they have to understand the changing industry is heading towards not all 1st party content will be exclusives to a single box, some but not all, or even timed going forward.

FinalFantasyFanatic62d ago

You could see this coming from a mile away, we did hear rumours of a new Xbox, but I'll be very surprised if it actually comes to fruition, unless that's actually an Xbox/PC handheld they're developing.

‘Hellblade 2’ Launches As The 23rd Most-Played Xbox Game, What Does That Mean?

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 launched last week to solid reviews from both fans and players. But its playercount? That's another story.

helicoptergirl6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

That's awful. This combined with the really low Steam numbers paint a disastrous picture imo. Really bad timing too because Tango was closed down for a similar thing. Great reviewed game, and low sales and/or player count. Hi-Fi Rush reviewed a hell of a lot better and it was widely loved by everyone, Hellblade 2 nowhere near that.

I know the rumor is that the studio has their next game already green-lit, but if I worked at Tango, I would be furious. "Why do they survive while we get binned?" I'd be telling myself.

But the suit woman will have you believe "Oh we have different metrics for the success of one studio compared to another studio. We judge each studio and game on their own set criteria" or something like that, I'm paraphrasing here but you get the idea. But no one who works there knows what the hell that even means. I mean the DLC for Redfall was getting worked on days before they even got the news their studio was getting dumped in the trash. So what are these mysterious metrics to let studios survive and others perish? I bet this is all hogwash, I bet MS don't even really know. They just had to make cuts and certain studios just found their way on the chopping block. Someone had to bite the dust, why not you?

Well I bet all this does nothing for the confidence of other employees in other studios. The truth is you have no idea where your career will be in a year from now working at one of their studios that aren't the mega big ones. MS just have too many studios to manage efficiently. "We'll just throw money at them and buy them and worry about the details later on. I mean we can do it, we're Microsoft."

darthv725h ago

...have you seen what the top 10 consists of? Its things like fortnite, roblox, CoD, apex... etc. This being a new game that has a niche appeal is actually surprising to see at 23. Its also the 33rd top paid game on the PC through the MS store.

tay87015h ago

Those are dreadful numbers any way you slice it dude. They hyped this game to hell for the last 4 plus yrs. It was supposed to be xboxs big game this yr. Ninja Theory is probably sweating right now.

Scissorman5h ago

And it's already slipped out of the Top 100 on Steam. Meanwhile a port of the 4-year old Ghost of Tsushima is sitting comfortably at #8.

RiseNShine4h ago

One of the biggest games of the year, a multi million sequel and heavily advertised game, at 23 most played? There's no way to justify those numbers.

darthv724h ago

^^heavily advertised game...?

I mean, I knew the game was coming but outside of a boot screen ad for it, there has been little to no marketing. And yet it still managed 23rd. Make of that what you will.

Elda3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Here in the East Coast on NY/NJ on cable tv Hellblade 2 has been advertised pretty well. I see the commercials every day at least 3 times a day for the past 3 weeks. It's even advertised as YT commercials.

Chevalier3h ago(Edited 2h ago)

What an idiotic comment. Let me guess the next comment would be GTA V outsold everything so....

Absolutely terrible numbers all round for this game. Ghost of Tsushima at number 8. Good games going to sell regardless of excuses

RpgSama3h ago

What a disaster, 2 failures in a row for Ninja Theory, first Bleeding edge, now Hellblade 2, any way you slice it these are not the numbers the most awaited game of the year for Xbox should show (before Activision purchase), also player numbers is extremely low and even more surprising considering is day 1 on gamepass.

Crows900m ago

If they worked on heavenly sword instead then they would have something worth playing and waiting for... unfortunately that won't happen.

Terry_B6h ago

It means that it will be the..50th? 75th? most played xbox game in June.

CrimsonWing695h ago

That people played it 🤷‍♂️

Scissorman5h ago

If this game cost more and took longer to develop than Hi-Fi Rush, then I would worry if I were Ninja Theory. Projects may have been greenlit, but the increased scrutiny over at MS may very well put them on the chopping block. The incredible irony here is that it was PlayStation players that pushed the original game passed its 1 million copies sold milestone. With that purchasing power cut out, and the Game Pass effect having trained Xbox players to not purchase games, it seems that the sequel may have been set-up for failure.

italiangamer4h ago

And that's exactly what pisses me off about Hellblade 2 not being on PlayStation, Sony promoted the original game and I bought it basically on D1 back in the day because I liked what I saw and ended up really enjoying it!
I really hope Hellblade 2 is next on the porting list because I would buy it in a heartbeat, asshole microsoft robbed me of this game!

darthv724h ago

Just get an xbox. Then it will be YOU that is robbing Microsoft. Gamepass is a hell of a deal and an addictive one at that.

AndrewM4h ago

Here's hoping for a drop of all 19 of the other cod games on gamepass. That would be a wild trip down memory lane.

1Victor6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Rip Xbox 😭 this will be the point when you can say it was Microsoft biggest mistake that cost Phil head to roll when the investors expect to see a billion on sale and get 1/3 only from PS.
Anyway congratulations to all those CoD players that have game pass.
Edit: never mind is black ops 6 but if they do this for the main cod it’s goodbye Phil

VenomUK6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I'm not sure how this move will play out but I do think it could devalue the Call of Duty brand Microsoft paid so much for.

Also, if after the release Microsoft compares sales revenue of the game on Xbox compared to last year, and then logically it will be less as Xbox gamers will be able to get it for 'free'. If it then looks to see if Game Pass new subscriber revenue makes up for the loss profits - if it doesn't It could potentially be the nail in the coffin for the Xbox console business and Game Pass.

crazyCoconuts4h ago

So normally I'd just buy COD every year. Now if they keep the prices the same, I might get PC GamePass. The way I see it, I get GamePass for a difference of $50/year. And they would get $50 from me that maybe I would have otherwise not spent with them. It's not obvious to me whether it's a bad move or not

ocelot078h ago

After being burnt with MW3 (really enjoyed mw2019 and MW2 (2022) as well as cold war). Guess I can give it ago on pc GP for a month. If I like it buy it on PS5 or PC or don't if I don't like it. I may dislike gamepass. But since it's Microsoft who potentially looses out on my money I don't mind.

Andrew3367h ago

They aren't gonna "loose" out on your money.

darthv727h ago

There is nothing to dislike about Gamepass. People can dislike the company behind it but fundamentally the service is excellent. I truly do not care about the politics behind it... I just like what it offers.

ocelot076h ago

That's fair. I just don't like how it's pretty much killed Xbox as a platform. Because of it and in my honest opinion Xbox is now a service rather than a platform. Say what you will about the Xbox one it didn't do as well as the PS4 but before gamepass at least people where paying for the games. Now it's ill just rent on gamepass and if it ain't on gamepass I'll wait untill it's on gamepass.

shinoff21834h ago

It's changed a whole bases buying power. It's not good no matter how you look at it. Sure your looking at it as a consumer but when it goes under, no more consumer

Should probably just buy it on xbox with the 20% gamepass discount otherwise you'll be giving Microsoft more of your money twice.

Nice!

All those rumors were dead wrong and COD fans will be able to play Black Ops 6 day one on Gamepass!

rippermcrip7h ago

This doesn't prove or disprove anything about the rumors of either a price increase or a new tier.

darthv727h ago

...true, but those were separate rumors. The one OO is directly referring to was the idea that CoD would be coming to GP as a result of the merger. To which we can put that one to bed now with this news.

VenomUK6h ago

@Obscure_Observer There's nothing wrong with being a consumer and being delighted that you be able to play it for free. But like with the many Xbox YouTubers who celebrated the ABK purchase by Microsoft who didn't consider the possible negative consequences for the console platform they enjoy most, I wonder if you have considered this could be a damaging move for the Xbox ecosystem? It might not be, it might turn out to be a genius move! It could be Phil Spener's last hurrah. Come Christmas when it is bundled free with new Xboxs via a Game Pass trial it will definitely shift units - but will it be enough to move PlayStation-exclusive owners to buy it and significantly boost the Xbox Series S/X market share?

Obscure_Observer5h ago

@rippermcrip

"This doesn't prove or disprove anything about the rumors of either a price increase or a new tier."

You can ask Geoff Keighley about that:

"Microsoft has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be playable on Xbox and PC for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass for Console members.

"BTW per Microsoft, the pricing on tiers is:

Game Pass Ultimate - $16.99 USD/month
Game Pass for Console - $10.99 USD/month
PC Game Pass - $9.99 USD/month
Game Pass Core - $9.99 USD/month OR $59.99/year"

https://x.com/geoffkeighley...

PhillyDonJawn4h ago

I can see gamepass ultimate being $20.99 (the price of core and GP individually together) and GP solo $13.99 GP PC $11.99

Outside_ofthe_Box8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

So Microsoft is willing to take a financial hit? Could have done that with Tango. This was the correct move. Any other move would have piled on what happened recently whether it be, price increase, new tier, or not releasing it on GP at all.

darthv727h ago

What happened with Tango, while unfortunate, was done at the discretion of Bethesda. We don't know what the conditions of the MS/Bethesda merger are but can assume there is still some semblance of autonomy where they can make certain decisions without the approval of MS.

On the flip side, its a shame that MS was not inclined to offer TG a place under their own direct management like NT has. As for this CoD deal... that too could be under some special consideration by ABK as part of their merger as well. MS looks to benefit either way due to possible increased subs/sales of GP/XB as well as sales to PC/Ps users.

Lightning775h ago

If they grow gamepass because of COD, have Another paid tier and selling the game on PS5 and last gen consoles.

Especially if this COD is the best one in ages, which equals more sales I have a hard time seeing how this game will take any financial hit. Whatever potential loss would pay itself back 10 fold.

Huey_My_D_Long7h ago

Hmmm, I think they will announce a price hike in between now and BO6 coming out.

VR27h ago

Most certainly, tbh I thought they were going to go the 2 tier route, with game pass premium ONLY having cod as part of the subscription and the lower tier you'd have to buy it discounted at like £50
