"PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2016 are up by over 224,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 20,000 units. PS4 sold 1,161,413 units for the month of January 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 471,865 units."

Still outselling PS4, impressive.

PS5 is on a steady path to reach that 100mil+ units sold by the end of this gen (Just like PS1,PS2 and PS4) and the green brand is on a steady path to reach maybe 40-45mil if they're ''lucky''.

I swear Nintendo holding off switch 2 to try and surpass the ps2 lifetime sales

mandf96d ago

Yeah that's what I have thought for a bit. You are probably right.

italiangamer96d ago

I thought that too, wonder what the final number of Switch sold will be when they discontinue it!

ZeekQuattro96d ago

Nikkei says March 2025 for what that's worth. I can see them going that route again. Reveal in the Fall and release it in Spring.

Solitariussaint96d ago

It's too bad Switch is a handheld.

Sgt_Slaughter96d ago

It's a console AND a handheld, though it's a console first.

Regardless of whatever you consider it as, it's going to outsell the PS2 and it will be the highest selling console of all-time.

On the flip side, I could just as easily call the PS2 a DVD player and talk about how many years they sold it for to discredit it

Solitariussaint96d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Lol, The Switch Lite itself is a handheld only. The Switch is not a traditional home console by definition alone, and no amount of padding will make the Switch become a home console only.

Nintendo really had to dig deep to try and steal the top home console spot but only the Nintendo Wii home console broke 100 million home consoles sold without resorting to making a handheld that docks and is technologically nowhere near on par with modern current gen consoles.

Lol, PS2 had the best games that gen also, doesn't matter if it played DVDs on the side because the PS2 was still very clearly a home console only.

The Switch is very obviously a handheld that can dock, it can't play most modern gen games on it, much less badass VR games.

You guys can claim victory all you want to, but players who are keeping score know that the PS2 will remain king of home consoles until some other real home console comes along to dethrones it, but handhelds/hybrids aren't home consoles by definition.

notachance96d ago

there's still about 20million sales gap though.. and when the next switch is properly announced and if it's backward compatible I imagine it'd be even harder.

Bonkers to me how close the Switch is to the PS5 this far into its lifecycle.

If they sell at least a million Switches a month until March 2025 (14 months including this January), it's right behind the DS/PS2 mark. Factor in Holiday 2024 sales, which for 2023 added 4.5-5M units, and it could hit No. 1 by the Switch 2's release in just at or under 8 years (DS was on the market officially for 8 years; PS2 13 years). All of this without a single official price drop is wild.

Solitariussaint96d ago

The Switch is a handheld hybrid though, it's not strictly a home console like the PS2 or PS5 are. The DS was a handheld too.

randomvoice95d ago

Not sure why people are disagreeing lol? It is literally a handheld and console both in 1. It has replaced the 3DS and the Wii U both. For folks disagreeing, care to share the Nintendo handheld successor to the 3DS?

ZeekQuattro95d ago

Yup. 8 years ago peoole were predicting it would sell worse than than the Wii U. Seeing it continue to thrive and flirt with becoming the best selling videogame platform is something else. Never seen anything like it. Even if it doesn't get there getting to 140 million+ is quite the feat.

repsahj96d ago

Congratulations again, PS5. You almost got all the regions and areas, but switch manage to top Asian regions because of Japan.

Tell my wallet that, I've bought so many games in the last 2 months. Microtransactions, and dlc not so much

Cacabunga1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I bought the third party exclusives and not a single multiplateforme game..

maybe Sony comparing with PS4 at the same period, where many more 1st party games were out now
And no, no DLC. Micro transactions never bought never will

purple1012d ago

careful, they are comparing It to ps4, showing 12% decline in games for ps5 console at this point in its life.

problem, ps5 is couple million down in sales, (citing this as evidence: https://www.vgchartz.com/ar... due to people not upgrading from ps4 yet, shortages, expenses, whatever, so maybe they are buying the exact same amount of games per console, but just there 2 million less consoles in general. sony themselves said they are 4 million down on expected consoles sold.

indeed, if ps5 was 5 million down, that would be 10 per cent less consoles, easy maths, but okay lets make a calculated guys, this 12% decline, is in reality a 6% decline because there are just less consoles at this point in its life vs ps4

ALSO: game content add-ons, 175% increase, who the hell is buying outfits fore the charters and stuff, waste of money, kids these days , pfft

XiNatsuDragnel1d 19h ago

That sucks I hope we can more games soon

FinalFantasyFanatic2h ago

If they put out more games, I'm sure the figures would be a bit different, the PS4 had more exclusives games at this point in both console's life cycles. So I guess that just leaves people to spend more on the games they do have to play.

anast1h ago

. There will always be more DLC and micros than games.
