The future of Xbox will be revealed on February 15th

Xbox writes: "Please join us for a special edition of the Official Xbox Podcast.

Hear from Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond and Matt Booty as they share updates on the Xbox business."

ChasterMies92d ago

Because a press release would just piss off Xbox owners. A podcast let’s Phil and his team explain how all this will be good for Xbox owners.

-Foxtrot92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

“We believe allowing these two fantastic Xbox games going multiplatform is the best way forward, not just for us but for all gamers. Barriers in gaming need to be torn down so no player is left behind. This is what we at Xbox hope to achieve”

Something like that

VenomUK92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

What might they say?

My SPECULATIONS based on the various unreliable and reliable leaks.

Phil Spencer's identity and that of his parasocial loyalists have been tied up with the Xbox brand for years so he is going to want to tread carefully so that this doesn't sound like a retreat, a failure or that he is abandoning his 'bros' who have him on their friends list and get excited when they see his account playing Pentiment.
Senior Microsoft execs probably have allowed him to do this so he can save face.

* A reveal that new Xbox games will be launching on other platforms including Switch and PlayStation (PS will be listed second).

* Possibly announce that Microsoft first-party games will no longer launch on Game Pass, but WILL come to Game Pass after a release window. Imitating new movies that have an initial run in movie theatres then after 3 months come to home streaming services. (perhaps day one launch on Game Pass will be honoured for existing subscriptions)
* Or new first-party games will still launch on Game Pass Ultimate tier.

Lightning7792d ago

@Fox that's about different things. You never questioned if games were gonna be exclusive. Only the ones who purposely took what Phil said out of context for fanboy wars (like many have here) at least on the subject of exclusivity. He's been wishy washy about other things yeah.

Cacabunga92d ago

Obscure Observer: what are you expectations? 😄

Darkegg92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

Personal experience. I was a student and I was the leader of a project. I used all my team members to create notes for ourselves that would be most efficient. The classes were overwhelming so we had to survive so much information overload. Of course, there were other groups in the class with the same idea. Somehow my group was a bit alone in our endeavor and people used our work to get other works. Without returning the favor to us. I know bc I saw my groups work given to others and somehow we were not reciprocated.

So I decided that the reality was that we ended up with our own notes and nobody was sharing, while other freeloaders were trading like crazy. In the end, I made our work open so that anyone can just have it. One of my group member was angry and thought how unfair it was. And it really was unfair. But as the leader, I told him we can keep it to ourselves and receive nothing while other people were unfairly benefitting .. or I can just make it open and create bridges with other groups. Well it worked and although I had kind of a mendicant suppression about me .. one of the groups decided to share and gave me theirs. I shared that to my group and so we were able to leverage the same advantages as some others were getting.

The point is that it will most definitely be wrong on some levels. But I see Xbox going multiplatform as a way to win users when we focus less on the short-term sight of exclusivity. Somebody will be taking a hit and this is an important step into who will let their ego go. Mind you its more complicated than that but I think Microsoft approach is that we are living in an age where convenience is more important. In my case its true. I have multiple houses (friends, family, not necessarily mine) where I go. I don't just game at my home. It's kind of a mi-casa-tu-casa scenario so we kind of just barge into each other. In this venue, having a station at multiple locations .. it's very convenient that I can access the Xbox from these without lugging any consoles around. Handheld is nice too. So I like the convenience of non-exclusivity. But in the context where Nintendo and Sony have a lot of it .. it just sucks that Microsoft can't push itself into creating first party titles rather than just eat up companies and bankrupt them. The biggest case against Microsoft is that they aren't trying hard enough with first party titles, the exclusivity should not even be the focus. What we want to hear is what they are doing for gamers with game creation .. screw the discussion on exclusivity.

VenomUK92d ago

My SPECULATIONS about Xbox hardware announcements:

* Phil Spencer will be asked a scripted question (as will be the whole thing) about the Xbox consoles, then he will give an emotional answer along the lines of 'we care so much about the Xbox console'.
* He will reconfirm Microsoft's commitment to Xbox hardware and say that new products are in development and that, naturally, it's too early to reveal anything now.
* He won't make clear if the new hardware will be manufactured by third party brands.

* THE SPECIAL SURPRISE GOOD NEWS!!! - The new Xbox Series controller will be officially revealed and a release date given so Xbox players who last week were losing their mind because they felt they were 'broken up with', this week will be doing cartwheels because they've got back together with their eX.

* Wildcard prediction: Phil Spencer loses his shit and kicks the podcast furniture.

darthv7292d ago

whatever the end result is... my dreamcast is ready.

Cacabunga92d ago

Looking forward to seeing if they will still share number of headshots and miles travelled in their games..

Nintendo sony for the win ✌🏽

jznrpg92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

@Darkegg this is a totally different situation than yours. MS spent a lot of money on Xbox but hasn’t got close to making the money back and they spent another 75 billion dollars. Shareholders and CEO wants profits not a lagging division propped up for 20+ years. They tried everything besides organically growing their game making skills and studios and failed and now they need to pay the piper in any way they can. They aren’t sharing to get goodwill from Sony or Nintendo they need to make money now.

CobraKai91d ago

@Foxtrot.
Oooh. Im bookmarking this to see if you’re right🤣🤣㊃ 5;

Zeref91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

@VenomUK

1. Obviously it will be scripted. Not a difficult prediction to make. That's literally the standard.

2. Why would they need to clarify who's making the next Xbox? Obviously it's gonna be inhouse. They don't need to respond to every silly little rumor yall make up out of thin air.

fr0sty91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

My predictions:

1. Open by saying "We remain committed to consoles.", while remaining vague about exactly which consoles they remain committed to... this gives players the illusion that they are going to keep releasing new consoles, while still leaving them an off-ramp to later say "We meant the current generation of consoles" down the line if they decide not to release another generation of consoles.

2. "However, Xbox isn't about being a walled-off ecosystem. We believe in people being able to enjoy the Xbox ecosystem from anywhere. This is why we brought GamePass to PC, and Xbox games to cloud streaming. This is also why select Xbox titles will also be coming to other platforms." - While I do believe that eventually the end goal is for them to release all of their games on other platforms, I think they are going to try to ease their playerbase into that reality, rather than hit them with it all at once and cause a mass exodus from the Xbox brand. So, they're going to start off by saying "these certain titles will be releasing on other platforms", which will be the rumored Starfield, Gears, Indiana Jones, etc... but as time goes on, more and more titles will be announced for other platforms, until it just becomes the norm for titles to be multiplatform. They are going to use these first few games to desensitize their player base to the concept first. If they do decide to go full multiplatform, I could see it coming with a timed release at first... "enjoy it first on Xbox" type of thing.

3. They then will likely announce that day 1 releases for gamepass are either going to be stopped outright, or will be reserved for the highest priced tier, which might even see a price increase as a result. That, or they will severely limit which titles get released day 1.

Cacabunga91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

Venom
“ Possibly announce that Microsoft first-party games will no longer launch on Game Pass, but WILL come to Game Pass after a release window. Imitating new movies that have an initial run in movie theatres then after 3 months come to home streaming services. ”

This in my eyes would be extremely risky and would cause a serious meltdown among GP subscribers.. GP was praised for the day one release.. that means all existing users of this service will take a hit from this.. only PS gamers would benefit because 1- its a new service for them 2- sony was again right not to release their games on day one..

FinalFantasyFanatic91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

It is a bit weird that it's Podcast only, is it just going to be bad news? Are they expecting a bad fallout? I'm pretty sure they'll announce that their games will be appearing on PS as per the rumours we've heard last week. I hope we can get Halo 5, Rare games (Rare Replay/Banjo Kazooie) and the remaining Gears games on PC, we'll probably have guarantees of Bethesda and Blizzard/Activision games remaining multi-plat as well.

@Cacabunga
They'll have a meltdown, but Xbox probably needs this, they're cannibalising their own sales to try and scoop up some of Sony's market but failing miserably. Delaying a release like VenomUK theorised would stop some of the bleeding that Xbox has caused itself, from a business point of view, it was a bad idea from the get go. Sony and Nintendo couldn't afford to do that, and there's no way they would miss out on that money.

Lightning7792d ago

It's not a game showcase. It's buissness talk. I'll say the one thing they got right it's not Satya the CFO and Amy Hood. The anti Xbox leaders but Phil, Matt and Sarah the pro Xbox leaders.

That explains why satya and the CFO would say one thing and Phil saying another the past 3 years. The mixed messaging.

Anyway, not like it matters too much but if it was the latter, then we'll know exactly the future of Xbox is no doubt.

-Foxtrot92d ago

Phil himself can say one thing and contradict himself twice over within a few months

We don’t need Satya for that

EvertonFC92d ago

Phil and Matt have both been shite, there the main problem.

ocelot0792d ago

Maybe Satya decided it he best for them 3 to announce it so them 3 get the blame lol.

Eonjay91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

It's a gigantic PR stunt
But what we do know ow is that Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush and Marvel's Blade are coming to the PS5. This is just the stuff we know. Could be a lot more or not.

crazyCoconuts91d ago

Phil can't say things contrary to Satya and Satya wouldn't step in to do Phil's job. Whatever internal politics led to the change we're about to hear about, I don't know. But as long as Phil works for MS, he will be on the same page as Satya.

Cacabunga91d ago

I think phil can easily win guiness record for U-turns.. guy is a living legend in lying and misinformation

There's quite a bit to cover.

Exclusive
The all digital future
The firings
And all the other mistakes they've made in just the last 2 months

Zeref92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

They're not covering "The firings" and
What are "all the other mistakes"?

Eonjay91d ago

@Zeref

The biggest mistake of all was putting day and date into gamepass. That's is one of the reasons it failed.

Cacabunga91d ago

Zeref

Soon it will be halo gears and forza on ps5.. isnt this a mistake according to you??

*here please dry those tears*

Christopher92d ago

Seems like the perfect place to make public announcements aimed at the Xbox community without making it all a stuffy business speech on a stage to me. They can also control the whole narrative there and probably answer questions before people ask them online with a prolonged discussion that wouldn't work in a press release or the like.

theindiearmy91d ago

Exactly. Podcast production is much simpler than video production. They don't plan on showing any games or hardware and it seems like this is purely being done because rumors are getting out. Those can easily be addressed and cleared up in an audio format.

Ninver92d ago

Because a podcast could potentially soften the blow. Interesting times ahead.

Firebird36091d ago

Podcast are more popular than ever. I believe this was also how they announced some developer acquisitions in the past.
Gotta remember this info being ousted wasn't supposed to happen this way.
So this is all unplanned.

FinalFantasyFanatic91d ago

Really? I thought podcasts were dying out because it was hard to get/maintain engagement, hence why you don't see many Youtubers doing them, maybe Spotify is doing better in that area.

--Onilink--91d ago

The Xbox Podcast show is still a livestreamed video on Youtube, they actually do one almost always after any showcase.

Its weird that they call it a podcast, but its not what you are imagining it is. Its basically the same format as the Nintendo Treehouse live shows

You can also go search for any of the previous ones on YT, they had one after the most recent Developer Direct too

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 91d ago
gold_drake92d ago

why is it a podcast?

i feel a stunt coming.

Lightning7792d ago

It's not a Xbox showcase or developer Direct it's a buissness meeting.

RaidenBlack92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

@purple101
so according to you, the News4Gamers' comment sections should only contain praises for Sony and PlayStation and everything else is to be barred & prohibited?
that's your opinion on 'amicable' ?
then rename the site to N4PS or N4P

92d ago
LoveSpuds92d ago

Actually Ryebread, the recent poll on Pushsquare really illustrated just how little PS only gamers had missed over the last decade or so. The votes were all fairly spread out too with no one game actually dominating the vote.

92d ago
Hofstaderman92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

Whats a business meeting? In all my thirty years of gaming I have never heard of something like this. Not even in 2001 did SEGA call it a business meeting. Semantics.

Zeref92d ago

@purple101

I'll take a free PS5 lol

Make no mistake. My "loyalty" to Xbox starts and ends at the games. If they ever go full multiplatform. I'll buy a Playstation. It's not a big deal to me.

Crows9091d ago

@zeref

So you must've had a really tough time throughout all last gen...Xbox had no games.

Zeref91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

@Crows90 last gen was great. Got Halo 5, Gears 4 and 5, Forza. There was Ryse and Quantum Break. Ori 1 and 2. Sunset Overdrive. Recore was one of my favorite games that generation.

All the iconic games that I play Xbox for were there (Halo, Gears, Forza) except Fable, they canceled Fable Legends which I'm still salty about. And they also introduced me to new IP's that I also loved. I'm praying for a new Recore and Ori. Then gamepass came. Best deal in gaming.

I was very satisfied with Xbox last gen. In fact I'm looking at it more fondly than I am looking at it now. Though Starfield was cool and I enjoyed it. The only games that I really love are Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5 and HiFi Rush so far. Though there's way more to look forward to. This year is looking insane.

The next few years look like they're gonna be awesome as well. It's definitely set up to surpass even the Xbox 360 with exclusive games.

Games were never Xbox's problem imo. Xbox is Xbox's problem. They keep tripping over their own feet. But as long as they keep making the games I like. Idgaf about the latest PR disaster. I'm too busy playing games.

What if older games are coming to PS?
like Ryse, Quantum Break, Dead Rising 3 & Sunset Overdrive?

Shane Kim91d ago

If that's the list then please keep them.

Jin_Sakai92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

A podcast? What a weird way of handling this. Xbox PR never ceases to amaze.

LoveSpuds92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

I suppose they get to cover it in a longform format and importantly, they don't end up with a YouTube video with a few hundred thousand negative votes and comments from the usual hard-core head cases.

They can control the narrative more with a podcast and they know the people they want to reach will tune in regardless of the format. Its probably a smart move, but it does make me wonder just how far reaching the changes are if they are taking this route rather than a straight forward video.

Hofstaderman92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

You can bet your arse that there will be hundreds of youtube videos about this with their very own string of comments sections...

EvertonFC92d ago

I think it looks way worse 99% of gamers getting the info off social media, main news channels etc the next day.
Nobody expected a showcase but a podcast is awful getting the correct info over.

--Onilink--91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

The Xbox Podcast IS a Youtube video, if anything calling the show a podcast is what has always been weird.

They almost always do it after the Showcases (and for other stuff too)

FinalFantasyFanatic91d ago

@Hofstaderman,
This is how I'm going to watch it, I don't really care that much about Xbox as a brand, so I'm not interested in sitting through the whole podcast, or maybe I'll just read a summary on a gaming website.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 91d ago
EvertonFC92d ago

Because nobody listens to it,.99% of gamers will hear it all the nxt day on main media news channels.

--Onilink--91d ago

All Xbox Podcast shows have always been livestreamed on youtube, just as their showcases (and they usually happen right after said showcases).

Its just another youtube presentation like all others, think the Nintendo Treehouse live format if you know about that one

--Onilink--91d ago

So, for the people who keep disagreeing… here is the one they did after the Developer Direct, very clearly named Xbox Podcast, and also very clearly a livestreamed YT video and not an “actual” podcast, they show gameplay, talk with devs, etc (though I doubt this will show gameplay since the topic doesnt seem to call for it )

https://youtu.be/yJFDLV9ov_...

Its a dumb name and makes it confusing, but if this one is the same as every single other Xbox Podcast they have done in the past, then its actually going to be livestreamed in the exact same format and its not the type of actual podcast you think it will be

Lightning7792d ago

Whatever they say it needs to be clear and concise. MS are hilariously bad at communicating but they had weeks to figure it out. There's nothing they can say that wouldn't cause backlash (if it's as bad as we think it is) all they can do be crystal clear. Don't say on thing now, then later in the year have another buissness meeting, yeah no absolutely not. One and done and don't ever talk about it again it needs to be that clear.

I still believe ABK will be full multiplat that's a given. Certain LS games will be multiplat while BZ and Xbox Game Studios will be exclusive.

crazyCoconuts92d ago

Since we're all guessing anyway let's get our bets in...
HiFi and Sea of Thieves per rumors I think are coming over
I think Indiana Jones and Avowed will be coming over as well
I bet Halo Infinite and Hellblade 2 will be over in 1-2 years

Lightning7792d ago

Hifi and SoT are a sure fire according to Tom Warren.

They back tracked on SF making its way over to PS. If we're goin off of that I don't think Indy or Hellblade will.
Make its way over. Hey, we never know we got till Thursday so who knows but personally I think those games are stayin.

Halo yeah I think that's happening. Specifically the master Chief collection. Well, According to a job posting for a future Halo game they want it to work on ALL Platforms. Now that doesn't necessarily mean whatever new Halo game they release will be day and date on PS6 in the future but they can pull the trigger as they see fit. So like you said a year or 2 later is definitely possible for the new Halo. They'll have PS code and engine ready for said future release on PS.

Hofstaderman92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

I think everything is coming eventually. The takeaway is XBOX is no longer a force unto itself, its been reigned in by stakeholders who want their ROI. Guess how they going to get it?

Profchaos92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

I wonder though would it be worse if they downplayed and denied only to enact the thing they downplayed in the next 12 months or just come out and say it.

Because it feels like this is 2013 Microsoft vision coming to fruition in many ways with the all digital stuff at least. However now some stuff is multiplat but it's not clear what is and that's where the problem lies with me. Do I buy the next Xbox as a halo fan or do I just wait for the psx release. Or will Halo campaigns be a permanent exclusive but the multiplayer will be broken out as it's full of mtx these days.

They need to be super clear here and in the future with any showcases things like game captured on series s footage or captured on X or PC or not gameplay footage. They always drop the ball there and we end up seeing a work in progress like Forza and not getting anywhere near that in the final state.

EvertonFC91d ago

Just get it all out now, better to have 1 backlash rather than 2 or 3.Having said that I think the messaging will be awful on the 15th.
If there is more questions than answers after the business event it's a FAIL from MS.

Not sure it ever was. It's upside was day 1 releases from 1st party. Few and far between plus it is just a rental service where you don't pick. It is fairly cheap for now that's a bonus. I think the beat deal in gaming is gamesale on reddit , and watching amazon

Eonjay4h ago

I got PSPlus and let me tell you it already feels like too much. As in, its nice to have all these games to play, but I'm still human and I only have a limited amount of time for gaming. The selection is definitely larger and better than Game Pass, but keep in mind, its 'Value' isn't something that normal people can really cash in on. Perhaps if you had it for GP ultimate, to get day on MS games, and only those games, and MS delivered on some bangers, it would be cool, but the same thing applies as with Plus. You are going to wind up paying for more than you actually use over a five year period. With GP set to go up in price, this exacerbates the situation. Plus you still got to PAY for games that aren't in the services that you want to play like GTA 6.

The only conclusion is that you pay more. You will not be able to get around that with any subs in the long run.

neutralgamer19923h ago

As a subscriber to Game Pass, I believe the service has the potential to be the best in gaming. However, to achieve this, it needs to consistently release three first-party exclusives each year: one AAA title and two AA titles, all with Metacritic scores of 82-85 or higher. Currently, it feels like we are not seeing this level of quality from Microsoft. Since acquiring numerous studios, the only standout game has been Hi-Fi Rush, and unfortunately, that studio is now closed.

I suggest that Microsoft's CEO consider bringing in experienced leaders like Jack Tretton or Shawn Layden to guide Xbox. Their leadership could help the Xbox brand become more competitive with PlayStation. Phil Spencer and his team, despite their efforts, seem to be struggling to keep up with the competition. It's concerning that Microsoft, having invested so much, is still unable to confidently report sales numbers without appearing lackluster compared to competitors.

Phil Spencer once mentioned that if Game Pass didn’t reach a certain threshold, they would reevaluate their strategy. This moment might be approaching. By 2030, there seems to be a higher likelihood of Xbox shifting to a software publisher rather than being a strong competitor to PlayStation or Nintendo.

The acquisition of Bethesda, motivated by fears of losing Starfield to Sony as a timed exclusive, hasn’t yet yielded the desired results. Over the past decade, Xbox has struggled with a series of underwhelming releases, and it’s time for a significant change to turn things around

Notellin2h ago

It was only worth it for me when I got 3 years for $45 per year. I'm not paying $18 a month to wait 6 months for their next first party release.

This service would work better for me if it was cheaper and you got their exclusives 3 or 6 months after launch. My gaming group all bought three years because of the low price and we ended up playing a lot of smaller games we would have never tried.

I can't play or keep up with all the new content and I suspect most others can't either. I just feel like the service is better in the other direction instead of focusing on the big budget IPs and "AAAA" budget games.

ThinkThink6h ago

Still the best deal in gaming for me, at least until it isnt.

Snookies124h ago

It most certainly is the best deal in gaming. It's definitely not GOOD for gaming. But, the value is undisputable right now. I fully expect that value to decrease within the next year or two though. It has never been sustainable. It's only a matter of time.

Eonjay4h ago

I really have a hard time with calling these subs value. This is because as I tried to explain above, I link value to not just money but also time. You can't play all the game in the service to completion. Most games you would never touch. You may 'try' games with the service, but you are only going to play the games you enjoy. Games you come back to and play for years. If you are paying $200 a year for a service for 10 years, thats $2000. With that much money, you can just buy and keep all the games you are actually gonna want to enjoy. This is just my analysis btw and its subjective based on what I define as value which may be different to you.

Chocoburger5h ago

"Suddenly", my gosh are people so slow on the uptake.

I've been saying this for years, its just a rental service nothing special, and you don't get to pick what the rental catalogue is nor how long it lasts. Anything can be taken away from you on a whim, even while you keep paying.

You know what the best deal in gaming is? BUY your games on disc / cart, OWN THEM, play them as much as you want, and no one can take them away from you.

Tapes and cartridges from the 80's still work to this day, and people can still enjoy them without having to pay any additional fees. That sounds like a far better deal than a corporate rental service.

Hofstaderman5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

This. Playing xenogears on my OG PS1 right now. Just got to Dazil and have most deathblows learnt but not accesible due to my level. What makes it bearable on a 4K tv is a AV to HDMI upscaler. Obviously has limits but good enough for me. No worries of the game being removed from a service too.

darthv725h ago(Edited 5h ago)

That's the whole point of renting... you rent, you play, you buy your own copy if you feel the need. What GP is doing is no different than the blockbuster or hollywood videos or every mom and pop rental shop. And people would buy their own copies if they liked what they rented.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH5h ago

Good luck getting some of these fanboys to understand that…

ApocalypseShadow3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

No. What game pass has done is tried to increase the idea that games have no value when buying. Only that the SERVICE has value through renting. Rent what you like when you like on any platform you choose that we're on for pennies.

When you push the idea upfront that developers games don't need to be purchased, not only does it hurt those developers, it hurts the industry with less revenue and profit to be made. Microsoft doesn't care as the only thing they care about is the subscriptions. They'll just replace you as a developer or your game with someone else if you go out of business or fire employees to stay afloat.

We have not seen one instance where Microsoft cares. They didn't care about Tango even if they made a good game that Shadow launched on game pass and killed the games sales. What makes you think they care about any other developer big or small? It's all about game pass right? This great rental service that's been known to kill game sales as Microsoft no longer reports them. And we've seen every NPD and worldwide sales of games on Xbox that are dwarfed by Nintendo and PlayStation game sales.

The selfishness of thinking about this bullshit value of the service is why many developers and employees have been hurt. The nonsense of Microsoft buying up publishers to prop up the service resulting in even more job losses.

You and Truth are part of the problem.

shinoff21832h ago

That may be the point from gamepass but we all know a majority of the base isn't doing that. Most are using it for their gaming period.

romulus231h ago

Yeah and where are those Blockbuster or Hollywood Videos now? The problem is you claim people will "buy if they feel the need" but they clearly are not doing that and the numbers prove it, MS is removing physical games from stores becasue they know people aren't buying them.

darthv721h ago

@romulus... well the fall of BB and HV was due to the declining markets for physical media. something that has been happening to gaming as well. The PC market is 99% all digital and it doesnt seem to stop anyone from buying. Consoles are becoming no different. People used to try before they buy thanks to demos... now it happens that these demos are the full thing. And yes, people ARE actually buying the games as a result of GP. You, shin & shadow just arent paying attention, or you deliberately choose to ignore that fact.

I'll probably download 4 of the games they announced coming today over the next month for £9. Seems ok to me.

But then, I tend to play single player games and i rarely revisit so a "rental service" suits me. Pretty much everything I play on PS is via PS+ extra.

monkey6024h ago

I am the complete opposite. I have ditched both GamePass and PlusExtra because I find I just add stuff to my play later queue and end up playing all the games I've bought instead. I went a whole year on both services and barely used them at all.

monkey6022h ago

Sure are. I've stopped buying new releases day 1 too so it might come to the stage where I get through my backlog and whatever I have skipped over for a later day might start showing on these devices and make it too tempting to pass up. Not sure how I feel about the services as a whole either though.

Even now, I just finished playing Mutant Year Zero and kinda want to pick up Miasma Chronicles. I could get Plus Extra to play it but I'm tempted to just buy it on sale instead

Same. I've had both services for awhile now and barely use them. Buying games just makes more sense. I just gotta cancel still though

Mutant year zero was an awesome game btw

It was always overrated. It only ever appealed to a certain subset of gamers anyways, which are the type who don’t care about owning games and are content to just experience them once and move on…or people who wanted to play CoD without buying it. It never seemed that glamorous to me, and I’m not at all surprised it has turned out to be unsustainable for MS.

Looking at GP attach rate for current gen Xbox (70%), the actual subset is gamers that want to purchase games.
