Nacon exec says industry's problem is "too many games"

The industry is starting 2024 in much the same way as it spent most of 2023, with news of layoffs and "for sale" signs and closures arriving alongside charts showing modest sales growth for the industry.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz before the holiday break, Nacon head of publishing Benoit Clerc acknowledges the frequency of setbacks coming alongside less-than-dire news for the industry, and points to a specific culprit for the seeming mismatch in events.

Weird that he says that but what he is describing is more the issue being falling to pressure to become a AAA production studio. You don't HAVE to aim for AAA plenty of studios have found a great place in the mid tier.

crazyCoconuts124d ago

"We're seeing today the results of investment made after [COVID] when the market was bursting, and every game was making a lot of money so there were a lot of investments being made. "
That's the headline. He thinks AA can do well if it connects on some niche market vs. competing with AAA with mainstream games

k2d123d ago

A better conclusion to draw is that fewer young people are buying games, and it's becoming more difficult to buy games for kids. Kids are playing fortnite, and buying digital only ps5's. Can't gift them steam games or Ps5 games then.

crazyCoconuts123d ago

@k2d that would certainly line up with my kids.
They occasionally pay $20 for an online MP like Lethal Company but never even express interest in the big AAA single player games.

shinoff2183124d ago (Edited 124d ago )

I'm calling bs on that. Not all games appeal to everyone. I usually stick with rpgs cause that's my sh,with an occasional metroiodvania, platformer, etc. I can't get enough

Also where th is xcom 3

crazyCoconuts124d ago

It's a simple answer that might not be wrong. From a macroeconomic perspective it would explain all the layoffs.
None of us gamers want fewer games, but how many new games are average gamers buying a year at this point?

-Foxtrot124d ago

I'd buy more games, if I had time. It's why I never get round to most Indie games these days.

You get in from work, say you'll boot up your PS or Xbox after making dinner and BOOM you end up having to do something else, either that or you just fall asleep from exhaustion.

phoenixwing123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

That's also if gaming is your only hobby. I read a book for awhile and watch some anime at night. Suddenly it's the end of the day and that game I meant to play for a hour or two isn't as compelling as getting a full 8 hours sleep.

-Foxtrot123d ago

Yeah that's true, there's so many films and TV shows I need to get through, and then people suggest anime on top of the more well know cult classic anime that I want to get through but I just don't have the time. Like there's so many classic well known films I've been meaning to watch and I have downloaded but I just take ages getting round to them yet new films get released and I end up watching them instead so they aren't spoiled.

Funny thing is when I have free time I end up decompressing on my PC listening to music, going through the same 10 websites, hours pass which COULD have been spent gaming and I don't get much time at the end of the day when I do go on.

Only reason I get time to go on here at work is because I'm allowed to have my phone in the lab.

franwex123d ago

Not only that, but then your friends invite you to jump online and you don’t get through the games you were going to play. Or series you were going to watch, or book you were going to read!

Im in this situation... which is why I tend to play more 'couch' friendly games on switch, portal, steam deck and evercade. The games i play are generally in bite sized play time and having so many at my fingertips means i can quickly switch to something else that i may want to play.

I certainly dont have the time to invest in long drawn out games, nor do I even really go into my game room to play on the consoles themselves. Handhelds / streaming / remote play are all i pretty much do now.

rlow1124d ago

In the article he says to many games is a problem because it’s harder to make your game stand out from the crowd. Also, because gamers have a greater understanding of games, they have to raise the bar to meet those expectations. But as a AA publisher they can’t spend the money that others can to push those expectations.

Interesting

huh..... well this could get interesting.

I predicted it would be Hermen Hulst as the new CEO, I never predicted there would be another…

Hulst will likely Host the PlayStation press event and hopefully there will be a positive energy at this new beginning for the division. I’m encouraged that both he and Hideaki Nishino reference the future so it sounds like Sony has a plan.

I'm a bit skeptical. The new guy is unknown. Of all the leaders in the past 18 years Sony has had great leaders at the helm Carrying on the legacy of what made PS great. Sony's has a newer vision and focus for PS this time around. We'll see what happens.

As I said before two leads can be a good thing wherever they want to take PS they'll have a single joint focus and take PS to new heights (if said focus is gamer first) or bad if they have two different visions. Then you'll end up like the circus clowns over at MS.

Eonjay3h ago

This is a really nice selection to me because Hulst is an actual game developer and has been doing so for decades. A developer in charge of making games. Not bad.

Plus the separation of responsibility is interesting and a nice way of handling an incredibly complex role.

PS studios has zero output under Hulst.

Only remasters and PC ports

Dude even managed to kill Naughty Dog

Lightning772h ago

Joint venture could be very tricky. They need to be on the exact same page on things. It's two guys calling shots.

We know Herman, but we dont know the other guy or his motives/agendas. Obviously it's to make money but how he'll go about it we'll see soon enough.

JackBNimble1h ago

That's why they would need 3 , so when they disagree they can vote . 1 on 1 could be asking for trouble, but at least sony isn't letting 1 guy take playstation in "his own direction ".

ThinkThink5h ago

All studios can make Horizon games now!

Interesting. 2 CEOs sharing the workload.

darthv724h ago

Two men enter (Hulst/Nishino)
One man leaves (Ryan)

romulus234h ago

Hulst will be CEO of the studios business group, and Nishino CEO of Platforms.

Relientk774h ago

Good luck to them and I hope they do great jobs. Let's see the games. Really hoping that rumored PlayStation Showcase is coming up soon.

Square should ask Sony for more money...

Outside_ofthe_Box3h ago

Square should ask Microsoft to buy them out...

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

@Outside_ofthe_Box,
So that Microsoft can close down the studio after doing nothing with them? Right...

gleepot8h ago

Sad but true. It's the consequence of a shift in player habits, massive overhead, and out of control budgets across the industry.

blackblades9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

What did NA and EU did anyways? Just translate or something? I would say it might help them get back to there roots but DK.

Hofstaderman9h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Actually, you are correct they play a hand in localization especially in Europe with the many languages. That and marketing.
