Sony deleting Discovery content doesn’t look good for its digital-only consoles

Users who had once paid for Discovery content will now have that access taken from them, and what’s to say game publishers won’t pull their content from the PlayStation Store one day.

Yeah no shit, one of the reasons I only buy physical games.

PRIMORDUS179d ago

Torrent and or Usenet, then you can own everything, while still buying some physical games.

BeHunted178d ago

Yeah, I enjoy downloading Malware and Spyware via Torrents

just_looken178d ago

To bad bestbuy walmart game uk and that other store in uk all stopped selling disc based media. australia as a country is also loosing disc media is so dam sad these new gens have no idea what they will loose when servers go dark like they have in the past beemp3 anyone?

Sony loves a digital future sadly as nintendo has shown how greedy one company can be along with apple so sony wants to be like them asap.

Relientk77179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

Just another example why an all digital future sucks. I buy physical and will continue to do so

Clippy179d ago

Agreed. It's brutal. Physical media will be the only way to truly preserve any form of entertainment.

Christopher179d ago

No no no. Hear me out. The solution is to go even more digital... subscription! That way you *know* you don't own anything and there's no guarantee that content will be there from month-to-month. This is what I heard from big CEO Suit Guy on what's best for the future of the industry.

Chevalier178d ago

Yep. Lol.

Let me log in to Disney Plus so I can watch Willow.... oh I can't.

Definitely hate this digital only crap for the very reasons everyone had brought up.

shinoff2183179d ago

Was this Sony or were they told to take it down?

Tacoboto179d ago

Sony - they signed those terms enabling something like this and are doing nothing to make it up to affected customers.

We haven't heard yet of Discovery doing this to other storefronts. Whether it's related to costs or whatever, the losers are the customers that purchased from Sony.

Christopher179d ago

Both. WB is forcing this action in the merger, Sony has no choice but to abide or lose out on WB licensing going forward.

Tacoboto178d ago

The profits they continuously post says that Sony has more than enough money to do something as simple as...

Post a tweet acknowledging the inconvenience in a public manner.

But they also have the money to do *literally anything else* to stick up for their paying customers. But instead all they've done is *checks the last 48 hours* ban customers for no reason

just_looken178d ago

Sony this happened on other platforms like xbox you can not buy them anymore but like steam games you can still download them. Sony just took them from your library straight up robbery if it was physical.

Einhander1972179d ago

This is ridiculous, only Discovery could have made the decision to pull this content. Discovery was in charge of the decision to allow users who purchased this content to continue to be able to access it.

Michiel1989179d ago

and Sony decided to allow users to PURCHASE the content while they didn't have the rights to it, it's not on discovery. Maybe they had a contract that said it ended in 2023. The least Sony could do is refund the customers, but sony can't be arsed to do so.

Einhander1972179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

That's ridiculous, if Discovery pulled the content from the users that's on them, otherwise they can just blackmail the companies that host their content, that sold it for them paying them royalties for years.

LonDonE178d ago (Edited 178d ago )

@Einhander1972
No the users bought it on PlayStation no? they paid through PlayStation.. ergo sony needs to address
i have movies i bought on my pc and xbox and i can still access them all and even download them to my pc/hardrive and access on all my networked devices and stream.. its about buyers confidence in digital.

its similar to xbox back compat in my eyes where i can play xbox original games on my series x etc and yet i still cant play my purchased ps3 games on my ps5 except for rubbish streaming via ps plus premium which i must pay for again..

sony has enough clout to nudge them to sort it

Michiel1989178d ago

@einhander Do you think discovery just thought one day: let's just remove all content from Sony cause fuck em or that there maybe was a license for the content and that Sony didn't renew? discovery can't just pull content, it's all contractual and sony decided to let users purchase the content with the risk of it being removed and not telling them. It's pretty disturbing how far people are up sony's ass. Kinda scary when their die hard fans just gulp it up and swallow everything.

If discovery was in the wrong here, there will be a lawsuit and I'm pretty sure that's not gonna happen. No protection of their customers at all, I expect better from Sony.

Einhander1972178d ago

"let's just remove all content from Sony cause fuck em"

Yes, especially given the timing.

Yikes, people going out of their way to absolve Sony of any wrongdoing is hilarious. Sony is not gonna f**k you bro...we'll unless it comes to stuff like this lol

Sony shares big new PS Plus stat, but not the one we want to see

PlayStation Plus has improved the split of PS4 and PS5 players on its priciest tiers, but Sony continues to hide total subscriber numbers.

lol acting like it’s equivalent to ms numbers

Mr Logic2d ago

Uh...They're definitely not equivalent.

"Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service now has 34 million subscribers."

"the total number of PS Plus subscribers across all tiers was 47.4 million"

darthv722d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

That's not the "gotcha" you think it is Darth.

darthv722d ago

^^it's not supposed to be bloop.... it's just an interesting observation.

Have you ever heard of a PC before? I hear they are pretty popular.

fr0sty1d 17h ago

MS started lumping gold subscribers in with those GP numbers... keep in mind.

shinoff21832d ago (Edited 2d ago )

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv722d ago (Edited 2d ago )

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils1d 21h ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick2d ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

gamerz1d 18h ago

Just let my subscription lapse for the first time since 2010. Will sub again every now and then for a month or so to access my old ps+ games but for me it's the end of an era.

DivineHand1251d 18h ago

Let those numbers continue to drop because it is now too expensive. $80 per year just to play online. I noticed they didn't offer any discounts on the subscription or controllers during this year's days of play for the first time in many years and they will feel it when people choose not to renew.

My subscription will lapse next month and it will stay that way until further notice.

KevtheDuff1d 14h ago

There were savings on subs and controllers here in the UK? I bought a controller yesterday in the sale..
It would be weird if those deals were not in other territories too?
