Dismantling false narratives about Xbox gamers that don´t buy games because of Gamepass.

Congratulations goes to everyone at Bethesda and Team Xbox for this amazing game which is nothing but a success made an instant classic!

EasilyTheBest249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

Starfield has topped the UK physical charts this week.

GFK's report showed that the space-action RPG sold more physical copies on Xbox than it did on PC.

Awesome game.
In before the Salt arrives.

Eonjay249d ago

The desire to get others as salty as possible does seem to be the actual goal here. Its not about supporting devs or actually enjoying a GOOD game. Its all about trying to trigger people so you can convince yourself you have something someone else wants. I think its great someone bought some games on XBox for this one week. Xbox was always in every possible universe going to outsell physical PC copies. Now go enjoy the game!

darthv72249d ago

You know... that isnt hard to do seeing as PC hasnt had physical copies of games for many many years now.

nommers249d ago

I don’t think physical copies of games are much sold at all on PC anymore. If they are it’s very rare.

Petebloodyonion249d ago

You know that there's no physical version on PC right?

EvertonFC249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

PC is 100% digital sales pmsl 🤣😂
It's scary how many gamers have disagreed with others stating PC is all digital.
Surely they know that's a thing for decades haha

1 massive, eagerly awaited game from a highly acclaimed studio doesn't exactly change the narrative, bethesda games have always sold like hot cakes.

It's the exception not the rule at this point but either way very happy to see people buying the game enjoying my time with it so far, vanguard questline was pretty cool.

thesoftware730249d ago

Flaw,

That's not really the point though, The narrative is that Xbox games don't buy games period.

I get that you are saying as of right now it's not the "rule" but it does indeed disprove a false narrative.

Flawlessmic249d ago

@soft,

they generally don't though, whether you want to admit that or not, I'm a prime example of an xbox gamer that outside of gamepass i try to spend little else and use that money to buy games on other platforms. In saying that i purchased the premium upgrade for early access for starfield.

Like I said 1 massive game doest change the narrative or the actual fact that most games don't sell well on xbox, that's literally a fact lol

Ps. How you finding starfield so far?
If ur into forza maybe we can link up and play when that drops!

Elda249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

Agreed. I use my XBSX for GP only. I mostly buy physical copies of games for my PS5 & every now & then for my Switch. I'm playing the Vanguard side quest now & it's interesting.

Obscure_Observer249d ago

"1 massive, eagerly awaited game from a highly acclaimed studio doesn't exactly change the narrative, bethesda games have always sold like hot cakes."

Well, it certainly was a major blow at people expecting this game to fail both on sales and critical acclaim because it´s an Xbox exclusive.

Xbox gamers don´t play RPG games = false.
Xbox gamers don´t buy games because of Gamepass = false.
PC gamers won´t buy Starfield because of Gamepass = false.
Starfield won´t move Xbox consoles = false.
Bethesda needs Playstation to successful = false.
Bethesda games will be worse under Xbox because of Gamepass = false

Those are the narratives debunked by Starfield as of now.

If it´s really an exception or a new trend, we´ll find out very soon as Forza Motorsport is just around the corner.

Lightning77249d ago

If Xbox gamers don't buy games then why did Forza and Halo chart a few years ago?

LonDonE249d ago

Obscure_Observer YOU NAILED IT LOL THE SALT

Lightning77249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

Technically you are on to something. I also don't think every AAA release won't chart like this. Highly anticipated games like Forza and Halo charted now this game. Redfall flopped hard obviously.

Will something like Avowed or chart? If the game is very good plus with great marketing then I'd say yes It depends on the quality. Being a new IP is always hard so whom knows for Avowed.

Wow! Beating out an NBA game in its homeland of the UK and a bunch of old games? Impressive feat.

Cockney249d ago

Wouldn't the homeland of nba be the us?

Lightning77249d ago

Yearly sports games. It's s good change of pace to see something else at number 1

EvertonFC249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

Before I start congrats and SF is very good game but;
Don't all the Xbox gamers on here say GP is better than ps plus because of free day1 1st party, also moaning about £70 games yet go out and pay £100 for early access premium edition.
Slightly odd and just goes to show when games do eventually reach these premium prices as standard we will pay it.
Great stategy from a business perspective, but moving FWD Xbox will do this premium early play strategy from now and the Xbox gamers will lap it up even though they ripped into playstation games price hike of £70.
So we're happy with buying £100 premium game to play it 1week early now are we ?
Sony will be looking at this and going ohh they don't mind, I can guarantee Sony will follow suit so all our AAA 1st party playstation games will become £100 to play it 1 week early I can guarantee this will become a thing now and mostly likely have your stories ruined by gamers who play it early rather than wait a week for the normal price.
Feel free if I've got that all wrong and looking to much into it.

Lightning77249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

Btw nice of you to run away and block me when I schooled in the DM's most ppl do when I embarrass them so don't feel to bad. Funny because you DM me first then I shut you down.

Anyway.

"but moving FWD Xbox will do this premium early play strategy from now and the Xbox gamers will lap it up even though they ripped into playstation games price hike of £70.
So we're happy with buying £100 premium game to play it 1week early now are we ?"

There's also a little thing called options. Either pay for the 100 for early access or wait for the full release. Not hard to understand.

"I can guarantee Sony will follow suit so all our AAA 1st party playstation games will become £100 to play it 1 week early I can guarantee this will become a thing now and mostly likely have your stories ruined by gamers who play it early rather than wait a week for the normal price.
Feel free if I've got that all wrong and looking to much into it."

So you show concern for something like this but made excuses for PSN+ going up? Even if they did something like this why would you be so concerned suddenly? You never fought back against other things going up so why start there?

I'll say no Sony will not charge a 100$ for 5 day early access. The reason MS is doing this to generate more profits from first party releases. I don't think every 1st party will be early access like Flight Simulator. Hell Blade 2? Maybe. Avowed? Probably not. Gears 6 most definitely whenever thats announced however I think Fable will be the next game to get that SF like push and do early access. I think it'll only work for those big anticipated AAA releases.

Obscure_Observer249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

@EvertonFC

"So we're happy with buying £100 premium game to play it 1week early now are we ?"

Now? No offence, but I don´t think you´re up to date with things regarding Xbox lately.

Early access via Premium Editions for Xbox games is not something new, as Forza Horizon 5 had it, people happily paid £100 for it and the launch was pretty successful.

https://www.trueachievement...

And yes, I paid for Starfield´s Premium Edition not only to get early access and Shattered Space, but also a physical copy to fill my future stellbook from the Constelation Edition.

"Feel free if I've got that all wrong and looking to much into it."

Can´t really tell if you´re right or wrong. In on hand, there´s clearly a demand from PS fans to be granted early access for upcoming Playstation games. On the other hand, Sony is well aware of both Forza Horizon 5 and Starfield´s early access success via Premium Editions, and yet, Spider Man 2 won´t have it.

So I think we´ll have to wait and see how future unfolds.

Definitely the most talk about game in the generation so far and, probably will be the most talk about new IP in the generation as well.

Xbox just got another successful and amazing new IP for its portfolio, which i´ll definitely increase the overall quality of the new games since it´s going to stimulate friendly competition among Xbox´s first party studios as a whole.

Phil definitely nailed acquiring Bethesda among other RPG studios making Xbox the more genre diverse platform as far first party games are concerned.

derek248d ago

@Obscure, propaganda my friend. Are you trying to convince yourself?

LoveSpuds248d ago (Edited 248d ago )

It's not even the most talked about game this year squire. Zelda had way more buzz than Starfield.

I am not saying Starfield isn't a good game by the way, Starfield also has a lot of buzz, but let's be balanced shall we.

MrNinosan249d ago

If it didn't debut at No.1 it would've been a total failure.
There is no other new game of interest for the UK crowd.
I hope when we get the numbers, that it's actually great sales as well, and not just "it was #1 because no other games selling right now".
However, as Hogwarts Legacy still is the game up top (just behind Starfield now), and that game ain't selling more than 10-15k copies/week, we actually have no idea how good the sales of Starfield, in UK was/is.

I still doubt Starfield will be a multi million seller as all their previous games, because of GamePass.

MrBaskerville249d ago

It will probably do fine but numbers like Skyrim will be hard to achieve without Switch and Playstation.

PhillyDonJawn248d ago

Prepare to be surprised. Cause let me be the first to inform you it has already sold multi millions

repsahj249d ago

Grats for de throning hogwarts legacy (released feb 2023) and mario kart 8 deluxe (released april 2017).

Stanjara249d ago

This is a massive win for MS.
In my logic, I would also BUY big RPGs on Xbox rather than pay 3 months of GP and loose access to it if I stop paying.

Modding is gonna bring this game to another lv.

This Bethesda game design is like McDonald's of gaming.
It's old and dated, but it just works.

16 times t... Ok ok.

MrNinosan249d ago

You can actually buy 7 months of GP for the price of Starfield.

DefenderOfDoom2249d ago

How much does it cost for 7 months of games pass ? I paid 120 dollars for 1 year of PlayStation Plus Premium..

Stanjara249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

But you loose the access if you stop paying... or you have to force yourself to play. I understand why people just buy the copy.

MrBaskerville249d ago

I'm buying gamepass for two months, playing it as much as possible and will try out some Lies of P and Forza at the side in these two months. Then probably burn out on Starfielf for now and will then be buying it when it gets cheap later on.

That would be an absolutely fantastic score for PSVR2 if they have any VR support plans! MS Flight Simulator (2020) is one of my favorite VR experiences over on PC. Not so much a game, but one hell of a VR experience!

Even if the rumor was true and if that did happen. I still wouldn't play or own a game that is classified as open world just to run into invisible force fields.

Rebel_Scum14h ago

Then what is your solution to open worlds that obviously have to have a point where they must end?

Knightofelemia3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

@Rebel_Scum

Really? Do you even need an answer to your question? The point to open world games is not to run into invisible force fields but to explore ever nook and cranny of the game hence the term open world.

Barlos14h ago

Same here. I won't be buying any Microsoft Games game

Notellin9h ago

Wow you're such a tough and smart guy taking that stance! You're really changing the world Barlos.

helicoptergirl6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I hope you don't mean any and all Xbox games.

If you do mean all of their games, then why not buy a game you're interested in? MS are a 3 Trillion dollar company. People with your stance are not going to make a dent, so you might as well take advantage and enjoy playing on Playstation (the best place to play) with their games AND Xbox games. Who cares about giving them money? It's killing the hardcore Xbox fan that you even have the opportunity to play Xbox games on playstation. So why not indulge. The more games they sell on Playstation then the more games they will port over in the near future. Certain obscure people will die inside along with many others. I'm laughing all the way to the "Games Bank" and I hope you do too.

Every open world games have invisible walls. So i guess you never play any open world games. If you don't believe me then you've either never played any Open World game or you never explored every corner of an open world game because there is no such thing as a true open world go anywhere game.

neutralgamer199217h ago(Edited 17h ago)

We were often ridiculed by Xbox enthusiasts, but it’s essential to understand that Microsoft's $100 billion investment was aimed at generating profit, not merely pleasing fans with Day 1 Game Pass releases.

Microsoft should consider releasing all its games, including flagship titles like Halo and Gears of War, on PlayStation. This strategy would maximize revenue while still releasing games day one on GP, money which could then be reinvested into the future of Xbox. While a few loyal fans might be upset, this approach makes the most business sense in the long run. Even put forza on PS5 get the sales. On Xbox gamers get these games day on GP while other platforms pay full price. Win win

nzjono17h ago

Huh? "We were often ridiculed by Xbox enthusiasts" Its the other way around, their ship is sinking, and they have known this for some time.

neutralgamer199215h ago

Once these acquisitions were announced, many Xbox fans felt that the primary aim was to take games away from PlayStation. Any suggestion that Microsoft wanted to maximize its return on their $100 billion investment was often dismissed with claims that Microsoft doesn’t need PlayStation or Nintendo to profit from these acquisitions.

Historically, Xbox operated independently within Microsoft, for better or worse. However, with such a significant financial commitment, Microsoft's goal is clearly to maximize revenue. They can still release these games on Game Pass at launch and also sell them at full price on other platforms. While some Xbox fans might react negatively if Xbox games appear on PlayStation, from a business perspective, it makes sense to leverage a platform with a much larger install base.

Phil Spencer and his team are under pressure to grow revenue and profit. It is becoming increasingly clear that achieving this growth solely within the Xbox ecosystem is challenging. Many Xbox gamers now expect Microsoft to cover the costs of games through Game Pass, rather than purchasing them outright. Considering that Xbox, now in its fourth generation, accounts for only 15-20% of overall software sales while its competitors are setting sales records, it is crucial for Microsoft to explore broader strategies to ensure profitability.

Notellin9h ago

You clowns were never ridiculed by Xbox enthusiasts. They are the underdogs and a massive minority and that statement is made up nonsense.

You guys need to quit playing victim in the fake war of console wars. The loudest fans are PlayStation fans and it's not even close.

neutralgamer19925h ago

The celebration of Activision's acquisition was met with enthusiasm, and any concerns about recouping that investment were dismissed with immature remarks. It's clear that PlayStation has a significantly larger fan base, a fact underscored by the fact that all their home consoles, except for the PS3, have sold over 100 million units. A larger fan base naturally leads to a more substantial online presence.

It’s absurd to label a company that has just spent $100 billion as an underdog.

I don't have a preference for any particular platform (I use a PC), but calling out issues shouldn't label someone a hater or a fanboy. If we can't discuss matters affecting all gamers maturely, we're missing the point.

Publishers are motivated by profit and see us all simply as gamers, regardless of platform. Their goal is to divide us and exploit us, but we often do a better job of dividing ourselves.

In 2024, we should be united to stand against unfair policies from publishers. Instead, we're arguing and failing to acknowledge when our preferred platforms make mistakes. We need to come together for the betterment of the entire gaming community.

Starfield's new Xbox performance modes are thoughtful and comprehensive

Digital Foundry : Bethesda's Starfield was generally a well-regarded RPG, but the game's 30fps target on consoles was the subject of some controversy. The game's massive scope arguably justified that 30fps refresh rate, with only high-end PCs capable of hitting 60fps and higher, but now Bethesda has changed course and opened the floodgates on Xbox Series X consoles following significant optimisation work. Players can now independently select performance and visuals modes at arbitrary frame-rates. How exactly do these new combinations fare, and is 60fps really a possibility after it was explicitly ruled out before?

It’s a point, click and load game. Stop with all the massive scale bullshit. Only thing massive is the number of junk items they decided to throw in the game.

Armaggedon1d 11h ago

Its not BS. This games running more systems than virtually any AAA game. Why else do you think it has loading screens? Besides, the clutter has been apart of their DNA for decades at this point. There are other games out there for people that dont care about that kind of stuff.

Mr_cheese1d 7h ago

Probably because it's been created on a very outdated engine that isn't designed to fully utilise current gen abilities.

You've only got to look at what rockstar games achieve with their releases.

Armaggedon23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

@Mr_Cheese People keep saying the engine is outdated, even though other engines have built upon past iterations. I think it would be more accurate to say that the engine does not do what you expect to see from a “current gen” game. Red Dead 2 was cool, but its not packing as many systems and permutations as Starfield. People make flimsy comparisons too often: “Look what this open world game can do with its visuals and presentation. Whats Bethesdas excuse?”

Yes, look at what this open world game can do that has no skills or attributes, no building potential and minimal crafting potential, coupled with all of the other variables packed in a Bethesda game. Not mentioning all of the other systems in place, you already have an unbelievable amount of potential variables to calculate. No wonder starfield has loading screens.lol
Heck, I would say that even Fallout 4 in 2015 had more systemic depth than Red Dead 2. It amazes me how much people underestimate Bethesda. Keep sleeping on them.

Mr_cheese21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

RDR2 is a living, breathing world with dynamic weather, full interiors, changing landscape with unscripted encounters, multiple onscreen npcs, wildlife, all with their own functions, animations, skins.

I wouldn't disregard one for the other.

Bethesda is notorious for operating on an outdated engine.

We could even use cyberpunk as an example of a fully open world game with multiple levels of variants.

Edit

Played the majority of Bethesda titles, not sleeping on them, just noticing a pattern

Armaggedon13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

@Mr Cheese

Rant inbound. Dont blame you for not reading.

I honestly think their notoriety with the engine is here-say sprinkled with a bit of confirmation bias over the years. For example from a typical naysayer: “Bethesda games have lousy performance and their gameplay is outdated, therefore their engine must be outdated.”

There was one journalist/Youtuber that mentioned something interesting. He was breaking down the negativity behind Bethesda, and mentioned that if there is an issue, its not Bethesda’s engine….its Bethesda.

If there is an issue, it is that Bethesda are very ambitious and seek to prioritize testing themselves to see how much stuff they can put into a game and still have it function without crashing. This ambition can cause them to forget their core audience, and pay attention specifically to what they want. I think thats one of the key reasons why BG3 is so beloved by people, its because the game was in a form of early access for years, and is literally built on the feedback of those that were able to access it. People who play Bethesda games are looking mostly for “meaningful” exploration, cool loot, and environmental storytelling, but Bethesda has honestly been shifting gears recently. It seems they want to focus on terraforming the open world rpg further via building and crafting.

I think Starfield is an example of a solid game, alienating the expectations of the core audience. Bethesda wanted to make this game for years, and they sought out to achieve their ambitions, rather than service their audience. The “problem “ with Starfield is that it is a clash of design philosophy, ery similar to Fallout 76. You just dont try to fit a Bethesda game with all of its variables into a multi world, multi landing zone game space. But they tried it anyway, hence the loading screens and othe supposed issues. I admire their ambition, and I love Starfield, ut I can understand where people that dont like the game are coming from. I just wish naysayers understood the true nature of this game.
