The Quarry director says his next game will be ‘just as big’ and could deviate from teen horror

From VGC: "The director of Until Dawn and The Quarry has revealed he’s working on another full-scale horror title, which is tentatively planned for release by 2026.

Supermassive is known for its branching narrative adventures within the horror genre. Over the past decade, the BAFTA-winning UK studio has released both larger games (Until Dawn, The Quarry) and a series of smaller, episodic titles underneath The Dark Pictures banner.

Speaking to VGC in a recent interview, studio director Will Byles – who directed both of Supermassive’s larger horror games – confirmed it was his intention to continue creating full-scale narrative adventures with the same genre."

Quarry was pretty good, but the lack of gameplay was a big issue, IMO. Until Dawn had a better balance.

I loved the Quarry. But yes, the lack of gameplay (much like BEYOND Two Souls, although having plenty in general, lacked the interactive gameplay that Heavy Rain had, which was a bummer. And I honestly thought overall BTS was an even more amazing game than Heavy Rain.) but yeah, the lack of gameplay hurt The Quarry’s otherwise very well told story, I think.

The Quarry didn’t really do it for me. It had its moments but the campsite teen horror theme has been done to death. They nailed it with Until Dawn and have come pretty close with The Dark Pictures but The Quarry was a step back imo.

Not sure if I had anything to do with it being a Stadia game originally so maybe funding/resources were an issue. Always interested in what Supermassive put out though.

Just as bad (in writing as last) too ?

MadLad649d ago (Edited 649d ago )

Even at their worst, they're the best in the industry doing these interactive movie games; outside of the indie scene.

I'm not a fan of teen horror because most characters are just plain stupid and deserve to die and the killer is usually a bullied victim of the people he's killing lol.

EvertonFC649d ago

That's the whole point of the game, if you don't like that 80s horror with cheessy teens then these games are not for you.

JBryant0619649d ago

I mean the Quarry is more of a Creature Feature than a Slasher type of Teen Horror.

JBryant0619649d ago

wish it had a better ending. a sizzle reel telling me who lived and died doesn't cut it. Laura and Max Reunion was probably the closest thing.

ClayRules2012649d ago

Yeah, that ending was not fulfilling whatsoever. It was just like “Here’s who lived and died in the following morning” smh.

I praised supermassive so much. Loved all their work even all the anthology’s. Held off on The Quarry because I said I would never pay Sonys inflated prices. Bought it in the recent sale and what a disappointment. Was so gutted, it’s their worst game to date. The whole gameplay element is pretty much non existent anymore and what’s left is dumbed down to such a pathetic level it’s their only game I can’t be bothered to complete. The industry is in such a hole right now. Such a shame.

Review wise Bayonetta got trashed. But I guess it is the only action title released this year so easy win.
Horizon is a good game but you spend far more time crafting and gathering than anything else not to mention the long cut scenes. Elden ring should have won open world award.

Crafting is fast especially when you upgrade ….

HeliosHex553d ago (Edited 553d ago )

@jz Yeah but still I found it boring. Almost felt like a second job. But that's just me you know I prefer my open worlds with less of that monotony.

Army_of_Darkness553d ago (Edited 553d ago )

I actually didn't mind Gathering items to craft new weapons and material because it brought me to new places and battle encounters with different type of enemies, made me reassess my battle techniques for more efficient ways to kill specific machines while trying to not destroying the part I need to acquire. I found it fun and challenging. Lol! Funny enough it literally was a second job in the game 🤣 but nevertheless , HFW would definitely be my GOTY.

Bayonetta is also hardly a AAA game.
