Sony: More Job Cuts A Possibility

Sony may be forced to make further difficult restructuring decisions beyond what it has already announced. This could include cutting more jobs than the 8,000 fulltime and 8, 000 temporary that it already announced last week. According to a Kyodo news service interview with the Sony president Ryoji Chubachi published Thursday, Sony's top executive said more steps including further lay-offs may be needed to keep the company from sinking further into the abyss.

I expect them to charge for PSN because the competition(M$)can do it and PSN seems pretty comparable to XBL. If they don't then expect less feature to be added on PSN and Home will probably get canned because of the high cost. Unless a bunch of companies start advertising in Home to help support the cost of developement.

yes, it's too much but not as much as other enterprises, the global recession hits hard everyone, not just Sony, Sony is one of many, I almost lost my job this morning here at HP in chicago, they almost fired 500 people but a new deal was settled.

edit: jay, that got NOTHING to do with the PS3 or the competition, they are doing great with the PS3, but they also manufacture many other electronic devices and support many other researches, that's just a point that many sony haters use as a combat flag.

Sony planned these first round of layoff's for 2010 months ago, before anyone was even prediciting a recession. They knew a slowdown was on us and they acted accordingly. Now that we have a clearer picture of what kind of recession we're looking at, Sony may have to go further.

That's still not the same thing as struggling, though. Sales will slow but Sony will be just fine. The gaming segment of Sony just a part of the greater company, and the gaming segement isn't in trouble. It actually appears to be right on track - and both sales and revenue are still growing. Sony certainly doesn't "need" to start charging for PSN.

It's not like some companies out there that without the revenue from online subscription fees their gaming division would still be wracking up the losses (When you're only making $400 million a year and your subsciption fees bring in $650 million, you really don't have much choice but to continue charging). I don't think we need to mention names.

It's getting rough out there.

This global recession is getting out-right brutal... Something has to give...

This is not just specific to Sony. In the area that I live, most of the major employers are laying off people left and right... I'm just wondering how long unemployment benefits will be able to last with all of this going on.

There's even huge protests going on in China over job losses. This is hitting everyone HARD...

Enjoy Microsoft's console. Should be fun.

candystop5639d ago

Well these guys better team up and vote the PS3 out to save there jobs.

gambare5639d ago

you know... I have friends working on the VAIO division, and the comment of Ps3Fanboy777 really makes me want to punch him in the mouth. Is he happy with the idea of people losing jobs? if that's the result of playing the 360 god forbids me to give to some of my kids a 360.

Why Indie Games Fail To Keep Their Place In The Spotlight

A look into the sad trajectory of indie games from high successful releases to complete irrelevancy in just a few weeks or months.

Easy not enough developpers to add content to the game (palworld)

Profchaos1d 1h ago

That's the thing with gaming there's always new experiences to have why spend months or years playing a single game when there's a new experience right around the corner.

Indie or AAA if your building your game expecting long term player counts you'll probably be disappointed as gamers often enjoy something for a few weeks and move on only to return if it's truely a classic.

Out of all the generations I've experienced there's games from 30 plus years ago I still dust off and play like super Mario bros, earthbound, vice city and san Andreas being games I treasure and revisit every few years but I'm not going back to play a game designed to keep me engaged for months on end because it's also designed to milk my wallet in most cases.

Build a great game that people love make it playable offline and ask does it matter if the concurrent player count is under 100 a year post launch more often that not it doesn't

The price of entry is too high to take chances like I used to. Was looking at V Rising and that ranges from $50-$130 CAD. That’s a lot for an indie imo. By the time it goes on sale, the player count might be dwindling. But that’s the trade-off, I guess.

I’m glad my preference is single player experiences, Indie devs got me covered 👊🏻
