The Next Horizon Game Should Feature Proper Underwater Combat

Horizon Forbidden West excels in many areas, but one place where Guerrilla Games can make some improvements is underwater gameplay.

In the original game you can find refereces near the Faro building (i.e. Makers's End) to a spacecraft called "Odyssey" which was left in orbit prior to the Faro Plague so it may still be in orbit. That spacecraft could possibly be worked into the next installment of HZD. Unfortunatley I doubt it, but you never know.

Developers have mountains of data that show undersea combat is not what people what (despite what people say) and isn't that engaging. That's why most skip it or do what Horizon did. There are plenty of dev interviews discusaung that topic.

The effort they put into the underwater sections is admirable but it’s not as fun as land no matter what games do

Limited movement, sometimes awkward camera, slower paced, combat is weak, some games it can be a slog to get through.

The only thing I see that might work is having some kind of armour with boosters that automatically turn on as you get in the water. Kinda like Iron Man suit boosters. But since this would be underwater the devs can decrease the speed when maneuvering. Or keep it the same speed as land movements. Also to help with the camera, whenever you enter an encounter, camera becomes locked and it zooms out a little bit, kinda like the old God of War games where you couldn't control the camera. I'm sure if the devs do implement it for the next game, it's going to feel great. I have complete faith in this studio.

Hard to disagree. I think the game was great but the underwater sections were kinda bland (and the trailers made them seem a lot more impressive)

How would you do underwater combat though? Aloy would hardly rip a crocodile machine to bits close combat as weapons wouldn't work physics wise under water.

You move so slow in water , wouldn’t most water creatures who can move quickly just the kick the shot out of you ? It seems possible but maybe the combat wouldn’t be that fun . You would need a simple trap that is rigged with explosives to one shot it . Shooting arrows under water wouldn’t work and the mobs would have melee advantage . Sounds good until you think of how water works . You would need a vehicle with guns or torpedoes or a one shot device .

Remember when they first showed forbidden West and highlighted the underwater segments? What was the point of that if there was really nothing to it? There are very few times the campaign made you go underwater for anything and it was really nothing to it. They could have done so much more. I expected some kind of epic battles or something underwater but there is none of that. It's the one area of the game I feel is incomplete. It's like they might have had some cool ideas but just ran out of time.
