PS5 State of Play shows Sony's treading water when it should be making waves

Jesus... Now imagine not having a single next Gen game yet ... The spin done here is amazing. For me the free astro game was enough to understand what next Gen is and understand that experience on the ps4 is just so far away. Returnal and ratchet are both amazing experiences. Beside miles morales at launch was crazy fun. Beside the fact that in the first two years almost all games are crossgen... This year... Please...

brewin707d ago

You're right, there are some great games on PS5. But it's not about Xbox. Its more about what Sony could do better and more of. The author mentions that Sony is just kind of relying on old hat stuff. Im excited for RE4 remake as much as anybody. But it's true that Sony is using another Resident Evil and another Final Fantasy to show off their system and that's not good enough. It does feel kind of ho-hum at this point. I want to see the new stuff that couldn't be done on the previous generation. I want to see it from both, but Sony are the ones that have a lot to live up to after the runaway success of the PS4. How are they going to top that? Nobody has those expectations of Xbox.

We're 2 years in and this is all they have to show and it's not even coming until next year?! God of War will be nice, but it's what the 8th or 9th iteration of that franchise?! That is what the author is talking about. Where's the new franchises for the new gen? Sony is supposed bto lead that charge. But right now it does feel like they're "treading water, when they should be making waves"

Lightning77707d ago

"I want to see the new stuff that couldn't be done on the previous generation."

I was upset SF6 is once again last gen going into 2023. This gen marks the longest we've seen cross gen releases. It still looks good but damn is development for 9th gen that damn risky?

mkis007707d ago

New Ip take longer than sequels. Sure, if sony didnt release so many games near the release year of ps5 we could be getting other games now. But that would have sacrificed ps4 owners.

Knushwood Butt707d ago

'want to see the new stuff that couldn't be done on the previous generation.'.

What if it doesn't exist?

Looks to Nintendo, who have a monopoly on innovation according to most of the gaming press, and what did they just launch? Switch Sports. What's there that wasn't done on the Wii? Strapping a joycon to your leg with an overpriced strip of velcro?

MrNinosan707d ago

Doesn't Returnal, Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo count?

Lightning Mr Bubbles707d ago (Edited 707d ago )

What a bullcrap article, if you're going to flamebait, at least have a point...

I know not everything has been perfect, but they had a solid showcase and I'm sure there is more to come in the future.

Of course there will be competition from XBOX, how could there not be? Microsoft$$ is spending billions upon billions.

refocusedman707d ago

I thought great games are what actually matter. GoW has a ton of iterations, but the most recent one was one of the best game I've played in a few years. As someone stated earlier, does Nintendo have any new IPs? last time I checked some form of Mario, zelda, pokemon, and intermittently metroid are the bulk of Nintendo games people rave abt. or what abt Xbox? halo, gears, or forza anyone?

707d ago
ABizzel1706d ago (Edited 706d ago )

@Lightning77

SF6 is a 2.5D fighting game, with what seems to be a very lite/minor open area addition to it, and more than liekly still using MT Framework or UE4. There's nothing about that game that can't be done on a PS4 / XBO / Steam Deck / or even Switch for that matter, so why would they limit the potential audience on a game that can be made for all platforms especially both Capcom's Engines scale across both generations as well as UE4.

I've said this before, if a game isn't pushing physics / AI / simulation / or other evolutionary CPU related task, or push graphic fidelity a leap above anything PS4/XBO could handle, then it's easily possible for the game to end up being cross-gen.

There's almost nothing Street Fighter offers that would push any of those areas, except adding something like dynamic hair and cloth physics and ray tracing, that would make the game impossible to run on last-gen, and those two things are irrelevant to gameplay, and could still be features added to the PS5/SX versions while simply being left out of the last-gen versions.

I get what you're saying and the logic, but from the developer's side and logic it's illogical to not port your fighting game across all platforms when it can easily run across all platforms.

SullysCigar706d ago

"I want to see the new stuff that couldn't be done on the previous generation."

Like RE8 VR or Horizon Call of the Mountain? Of course that won't sit with people just looking to whine, so go ahead and move the goal posts now...

senorfartcushion706d ago

You’re on N4G, every comment is found to be an insult to one of the consoles

706d ago
Neonridr706d ago

@Sully - let's not pretend that only Sony could pull that off. Half Life Alyx looks utterly amazing on PCVR. I'd love to see RE8 on PCVR too, but my guess is Sony will have some exclusivity again there. That being said I'll play it on my PS VR2 for sure.

SurgicalMenace706d ago

@Brewin

Dude, how do you sound with this asinine assessment of the company who's delivering over both Nintendo and MS. The controller and sound technology alone are enough to smoke both in the current gen arena. Between my A90J and HT A9 theater surround sound, the PS5 is the champion when met with the task of using them both masterfully. All this talk about how much they have to prove is cringe, at best. Who has anything to match their contributions?

I, for one, am satisfied and I purchase everything allowing for more revenue to develop more of the standout quality Sony's known for. 98 PS5 games later and I couldn't disagree with your sentiment more. I have no games that are current gen for my Xbox. Even if I were to purchase both Forza and Halo, they're both cross gen. There's not one thing that cements the XB as a contender. Nothing to say about them? I guess we'll just keep ignoring how lazy Nintendo is because they're selling a lot of units?

Tempest, Haptic, PSVR2, PlayStation Plus+, the only standout library of current gen games....what more do they have to do to satisfy individuals who find their glory talking nonsense in the comment section. How many actual PS5 games have you purchased? How much have you invested in your experience to be wowed? I guess Sony's supposed deliver everything in a handbag for you. Gamers have gotten so impossible to please because of these unrealistic and delusional expectations. How about you learn the craft, get in the industry and show us how it's done? If you're not able/willing then sit there, stop whining and wait for the professionals to deliver what you can't. Have a great day.😁

darkrider706d ago

Anyone that questions Sony about new ip doesn't know nothing about videogaming....

Oh NO n4g had a article claiming state of play raised the bar for this E3 time previews quick we need a article to counter that claim and make Sony look bad

neutralgamer1992707d ago (Edited 707d ago )

It was one of the most watched events that Sony has done over the past 3 years. Yes we all want more because we just cannot forget E3 presentations but the fact is those days are gone

All these companies want to stay in the spotlight so that's why they're slowly releasing the information throughout the year

generic-user-name707d ago

Forget that, Sony continuing to support VR with a next gen headset has been woefully overlooked by most. 6 years since PSVR1 launched, when many called it a fad or the next '3DTV', and here we are, about to have another 6 years of VR but this time with a generational leap that can really push the medium into the mainstream. MS and Nintendo will sit back and watch as Sony and Meta drag VR into the mainstream, surely ready to jump in once the groundwork has been laid.

You want to talk about making waves, look no further than that.

SullysCigar706d ago

100% this. VR gets overlooked because it doesn't suit their agenda.

Sony showed exclusive, next gen only games, but it "doesn't count", or something. Lmao

SurgicalMenace706d ago

It doesn't count because people don't want to be expected to afford it. They have to pay to experience the PSVR2 so they'll dismiss it. They want to just buy a console and it do everything that they expect with no further investment. Most of the individuals complaining don't even buy games they just talk about how much they're not worth the price.

We've encountering people like them. They're the "I don't see any point of spending all that money on Jordans anyway" types. They'll advocate for anything that's cheap or free only, damning anything that involves extra cost or those willing to pay the price.

SyntheticForm707d ago

Just because PlayStation's the leader and blowing Xbox out of the water in terms of releases doesn't mean that Sony can't be a better version of what they are.

The idea that whenever Sony is criticized they're being compared to Microsoft, or that the criticism is a hit piece by Microsoft apologists needs to stop. Just because Sony's the leader doesn't mean we can't ask better of them or make suggestions.

These things aren't always nefarious.

brewin706d ago

That's 100% What this is all about! We're just expecting more from Sony. They're the leaders and always talking about these super expensive AAA games. Well, show them to us already! That's what we're saying. They're not showing them so people are starting to get annoyed. I personally don't care about VR because of my past head injuries I cannot use it. They did state that this state of play would be About VR and 3rd party partner stuff, but I expected some 3rd party exclusives, not remakes and sequels that are cross platform.

SurgicalMenace706d ago

You guys sound like unsatisfied slavers. They can do more while you all do what? Nothing to accelerate the process, just nag on the sidelines. If you actually purchase the games and play them you'll spend less time expecting more. One thing about Sony, they always deliver so it's only a matter of when. Have patience or go play the alternatives.

S2Killinit707d ago

Its amazing how anyone can make any claim these days. To think that Sony is “threading water” when their competition has nothing. If MS is threading water, MS must already be underwater.

ApocalypseShadow707d ago

Confusing but I got the gist. Lol. Change this for that, carry the one and voila.

brewin706d ago

Again, THIS IS ABOUT PLAYSTATION, not Xbox. Why does every Sony fanboy defend PlayStation by comparing them to Xbox?! Xbox let us know what they're doing long ago. It's a 3rd party box with a great subscription.model that will provide good 1sr party stuff eventually. They've said for a long time they're not competing with Sony and their big SP games. Xbox fans are ok with that. They're happy with Halo, Gears, Forza, and now Bethesda games. That stuff will come as MS made those financial commitments not that long ago and they will pay off eventually. But what is Sony doing in the meantime? Where are the killer apps for the PS5?!

S2Killinit706d ago (Edited 706d ago )

Because everything is relative.

And the killer apps are already here compared to the barren xbox release window. Why is it that you seem to pretend like xbox gets to bid its time with games (since last gen btw), but Sony needs to impress at all times. Hmmm. Maybe Sony is also waiting for a strategic time to announce EVEN MORE games. Not that what they have showed so far isnt already blowing xbox’s games out of the water.

shinoff2183706d ago

@brewin

Lol. Of course ms said they aint competing with sony. They got their asz handed to them.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 706d ago
TheLigX706d ago

It was a 3rd party state of play. They’ll have a first party full showcase in august/September like they did last year. That was just the appetizer.

KingofBandits706d ago

The bias in this headline is tangible. Its a shame these people shill so hard but the reality is PS5, and PS brand as a whole, have many games that can not be played anywhere else on top of the third party games. I do not see how anyone can deny that. Lets just see how well MS is prepared for its showings this month, because Sony already has more exclusives both out and announced then all of the game studios MS now owns. Starfield is NOT enough

My God what a disasterous take by the Author. The last State of Play was a Master stroke, one of the best in years! It proves Sony still has a metric ton of secrets and can have the whole internet talking whenever they please.
MS and Ninty need to take note on how to do a proper show like this.

707d ago Replies(1)
Jin_Sakai707d ago (Edited 707d ago )

“My God what a disasterous take by the Author. The last State of Play was a Master stroke, one of the best in years!“

A Master stroke when it was mostly third party games and PC releases? It’s far from being one of the best in years.

Vengeance1138707d ago

Mostly PC releases? Please do tell what other PC releases were there outside of Spiderman? You would actually with a straight face call a show that featured RE4, Collisto Protocol and the best trailer for FF16 we've yet to see, an average show?? Not to mention plenty of VR showings for those that like that stuff. It was well above average and without question that best SOP since the PS5 was announced.

luckytrouble707d ago

Sony stated well in advance that it would be third party announcements and PS VR2 content. I love how they always get blamed for presenting precisely within the expectations they set and people like you act like they promised things they didn't and thus dropped the ball.

I swear, some of you /want/ to be unhappy.

MrNinosan707d ago

It was supposed tonbe Third Party games, just like they said when announcing the SoP. How can it be a bad thing, actually doing exactly what has been promises?

Silly gameAr707d ago

I'm sure it's not going to be the only show that's going to showcase 3rd party titles. What are you going to say when those shows roll around? I'm really confused here.

They showed a lot of upcoming games that we didn't see anywhere else, and people are acting bitter about it? You seem like you're mad that awesome games were announced or some shit. What a freaking joke.

Plus, most of us know that Sony will reveal first party games when they're ready.

jznrpg706d ago

They said it was a mostly 3rd party show before hand . Why would people expect something else . They have more in store but they are showing less games farther out . They some some early reveals but more and more are closer to release

TheTony316706d ago

What PC releases? You mean the 40 sec Spiderman trailer? lol.

sinspirit707d ago

I really disagree. It was okay. I can't get excited about FF16 even with the team behind it. I am tired of cookie cutter stories and lack of creativity with boring character development. I am hoping this isn't a problem. The combat, even with their improvements since XV, still doesn't seem that fun. I miss how relaxing yet creative and suspenseful some turn based fights were that real time action can't make happen. Of course both have negatives and positives but I think they're overdue. FFXII I liked the combat and think it was going the right direction

jznrpg706d ago

You have the story for FF16? I don’t know much about it at all wish I had your crystal ball.

pietro1212706d ago

Cookie cutting stories? You got that from two 3 minute trailers… how impressive

sinspirit706d ago

@replies

I never said I knew the story or inferred that. I specifically stated I was tired of them having stories that have those problems and that I hope it isn't a problem with this game.

Snakeeater25706d ago (Edited 706d ago )

You must be a new gamer

Saying is the best don’t mean it is

ChubbyBlade706d ago

Multi platform games and indies is a master stroke? Why do I own a ps5? I can get all of these on my pc.

Vengeance1138706d ago

So do that, go ahead buy them all on PC, really doubt Sony cares what you do. Apparently incredible jaw dropping games just isn't enough to please you, all you need is for it to be exclusive so you can then release those endorphins right? lmao
Exclusivity is far better than incredible gameplay right? According to you?

I thought it was Playstation's best State of Play ever. State of Play's usually suck.

ClayRules2012707d ago

I disagree. I’m glad you got so much enjoyment from it tho.

KillBill707d ago

You just made claim that the reason it was the best 'State of Play' was because it wasn't as bad as the other 'State of Play' PS has had in the past that were also bad. lol

ChubbyBlade706d ago

I’m gonna hard disagree. There wasn’t much that I NEED a ps5 for. A bunch of indies, games that have ALREADY been shown for years now, multiplatform titles etc.

Callisto and stray are really the only games that was shown I have any interest in and stray has already been shown off numerous times.

LOGICWINS706d ago

I agree with you. I saw nothing there that would influence me to buy a PS5. I can play most of those games on Xbox. But by State of Play standards, it was an amazing show.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 706d ago
brewin707d ago

I think many of those who feel this way just expect more from Sony. I am personally happy with my PS5. Id prefer a few more games that weren't also on PS4 and it was a better launch window than just about any other console since probably Xbox 360.

But Sony is looked upon to provide the megatons and that just isn't happening right now. Pretty much everything they showed was for next year and most of it wasn't exclusive. Final Fantasy 16? FF doesn't hold the weight it used to and I don't like VR, I've had a couple concussions and cannot use VR without getting sick. Not my idea of enjoyment.

I'm hoping there's another one this summer where they show us those new franchises and big exclusives we know they've been working on. I don't care if it's not releasing until 2024, I want to know about it and at least see some kind of teasers. I just want to see something that screams "you MUST own this console, and they're just not there yet. I know they will be, but so far this gen has been owned by 3rd parties. Which is fine as I own a 3 consoles. I just buy PlayStation for those big-time exclusives, not 3rd party.

phoenixwing707d ago

Maybe ff doesn't hold up to you but to me and many millions we will be buying day one

brewin707d ago

I hope they can redeem themselves after FF 15. I love Final Fantasy, but 15 didn't feel like Final Fantasy. Although I did absolutely love riding Chocobos!

But the author has a valid point. Its the 16th mainline FF, that's feeling a bit old hat at this point. I hope it's great though, I really do and I will likely buy it day 1 just as I have most of the FF games Ive played.

Lightning77707d ago

People forget this is a state of play. A 30 minute State Of Play. What they showed in a span of 30 minutes was actually good imo. I wasn't expecting SF6 but we got it. I'm bot into horror stuff CP looked great. Again, it's about gow you use that time and Sony use that time wisely.

Eonjay706d ago

People didn't really forget. In fact if you look at the vast majority of reactions they were all positive. One negative reaction shouldn't be taken seriously.

FinalFantasyFanatic706d ago

There really wasn't much for me personally, but it was a pretty packed segment, Resident Evil 4 was probably the biggest surprise (the again, alot of us expect them to remake most of the series after the few few games).

Rumored PlayStation May 2024 showcase could happen this week per industry insider

A renowned industry insider has suggested the rumored PlayStation May 2024 showcase featuring Silent Hill 2 could happen this week.

Bogus!
Why would Sony do that and how would this benefit them?
1) It would piss off their media partners (IGN, Gamespot, Edge, etc.) since they would have to allocate resources fast to cover the event.
2) Risk of not having great coverage or proper coverage from the various source
3) It could give the impression that they are not confident in their own stuff.
4) They would miss the chance to hype the event losing viewers and losing free marketing time.

Again I'm calling it bogus unless it's a small showcase before the big one or because they want to announce that Hellbalde 2 is also coming on PS5.

SlothLordPootus2h ago

As far as I can remember, they typically give a week heads up for these sorts of things.

Lightning772h ago

I was about to say Sony always gives a week in advance for their show.

VersusDMC2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Last year it was a weeks notice.

https://blog.playstation.co...

May 17th announcement for may 24th show.

VersusDMC1h ago

Nintendo always tweets that a direct is happening tomorrow but no one cares.

Sony gives a week or days of notice and we get anti sony type fake outrage like this.

But good luck trying trying to get some Sony hate going...

Petebloodyonion1h ago

You just mention it!
Sony gives a week in advance NOT just a couple of days.
So I fail to see what Sony's hate movement I'm trying to start when it's a basic business strategy to not piss off your partners (ask Sega).
And I doubt it's hate to ask how it would benefit Sony in doing so.

thesoftware7301h ago(Edited 1h ago)

@Versus
Huh? What?

Bro you really should relax, if what you read was some kinda negative against Sony.... seriously, is that what you got from the comments?

Bro, he was debunking the rumor, and gave perfectly good reasons why it would be unlikely, and your Nintendo Direct comparison is different, as this is supposed to be a BIG Sony showcase, not a surprise 20 min direct, and Sony 's pattern has been one week.

Slow down warmonger.

VersusDMC37m ago(Edited 36m ago)

@thesoftware730

"1) It would piss off their media partners (IGN, Gamespot, Edge, etc.) since they would have to allocate resources fast to cover the event."

That is implying Sony is preventing them from doing their job properly therefore negatively affecting their business...but i guess that's a reach in your mind?

And it's not like they need that many resources to cover the stream. They just need 3 people to react to the stream live and make some easy articles made up mostly of summaries of Sony provided press releases. They would have enough time to "prepare" if it was announced with one days notice.

Petebloodyonion1h ago

Before I get tons of replies for Sony given a week in advance, my initial comments are related to the notion that the Show could happen this week as the title mentions.
Now to be fair the complete article mentions that Jeff said the Show could happen later in May giving time for Sony to give the normal 7-day notice.

Again not trying to start a negative thing here just thinking that it's bogus that Sony will have a show this week

notachance23m ago
