Spider-Man could have been an Xbox exclusive, but apparently, Microsoft turned Marvel down when approached.

....the leadership [at the time] sure made some odd decisions.

RosweeSon723d ago

At the time? It’s still happening 🤣✌🏻

Charlieboy333723d ago

Phil was already leading though...

ALMGNOON723d ago

Phil Spencer was already in charge 🤡

darthv72723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

@all above, i see none of you get it. "At the time"... meaning since then Phil and the gang have been making better choices. But (again) at the time it was a huge missed opportunity. 8 years ago, they werent interested in licensed properties and were into micromanaging the teams they did have. Now they have more teams and a more hands off approach and are working with licensed properties (Indiana Jones for ex).

I shouldn't have to explain it... things change. Now do you get it?

ElvisHuxley723d ago

I've been away from this site for a while. So, you've finally given up the facade? Being honest now? lol

Godmars290723d ago

MS priority, ever since COD and Halo 2 anyway, has been online multiplayer. Subscriptions. That's not changing anytime soon.

RosweeSon723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

“Now they are more hands off” and have nothing to show for it, everything got delayed they’ve launched 2 consoles with barely as many top exclusives to go with it. They conned people into going next gen with these systems then made the very select few games they have released available on last gen systems so nobody needed to buy the new system
They should have delayed it a year but didn’t wanna be a year behind Sony because it would of course look better to have a console on the shelves nothing to sell with it but we got the console out, which they’ll upgrade or replace with series X2 by the time these licensed properties they are working with come to fruition. Indiana Jones is currently barely a logo and they’ve shown nothing since no doubt having problems like fable (I meant perfect dark but 🤷🏻‍♂️) like halo which is still unfinished I mean sure yeah fantastic management. They bought a company and released games for their rivals I mean you cant make this shiiii up 🤣🤣

That's one word for it. Now, though, with hindsight, another word for it might be 'doh'!

kneon723d ago

It was probably for the best, it's doubtful that there is an XBox studio that would have been able to produce a Spiderman game of the same caliber as what Insomniac has done

-Foxtrot723d ago

Well…they had their chance

However with Sony having the film rights I don’t know why they wouldn’t have asked Sony first. You’d think they would have been the main choice.

Charlieboy333723d ago

The way I see it, their priority was making a great game to rival the Arkham games......doubt they were even thinking about making a movie based on that game. Plus at that time I doubt that Spider-Man was even decided on as the character.....Insomniac could have chosen Wolverine to start with for instance. So basically I don't think Sony's movie rights to Spider-man played any role in this.

Magic_Spatula723d ago

If I remember, Bryan Intihar said they had the choice to make a game using any Marvel IP and they chose Spider-Man.

purple101723d ago

Also Sony has had the licence for years and years everybody knows the PlayStation 3 font and logo on the console was printed using the Spider-Man text look it up it's an interesting fact, I think

gerbintosh723d ago

I believe they went to Microsoft first because they have deeper pockets than Sony

CobraKai723d ago

@Mark.
I remember that too. Insomniac chose Spider-Man, out of all the Marvel guys, due to his appeal and large fan base.

Sony owns the movie rights only. The video game rights are completely separate, which is why Spider-Man appears in other games on other platforms.

darthv72723d ago

I havent been paying attention to this deal but I hear the only other presence of SM in a 3rd party game is the avengers... and only for PS.

saint_seya723d ago

@darthv72 also in fornite.

P_Bomb723d ago

Spidey and pals are in the Lego games too.

Seraphim723d ago

@ darth....
I mean it's not like there's a ton of Marvel content out there in the video game industry, at least not in the past decade, when Disney/Marvel started taking a game by game approach to licenses. However Spiderman is in Ultimate Alliance 3 as well. A Nintendo exclusive.

Unknown_Gamer5794723d ago

To my understanding, Marvel approached Insomniac to make a Marvel game featuring a hero of their choosing. It was then that they opted to make a Spider-Man game, because of how iconic he is. Sony does hold the film rights to Spider-Man but not all of Marvel. Still...I agree that they were an obvious choice given they have what is presumably a good working relationship with Marvel.

GamingSinceForever723d ago

Marvel had to have approached Sony 1st and Sony then contacted Insomniac. Had Marvel just gone straight to Insomniac I doubt that the game would have been a PlayStation exclusive.

Unknown_Gamer5794723d ago

@GamingSinceForever Sony owns Insomniac, you know. I'm pretty sure it would go without saying that anything they produce would at the very least be a PS console exclusive. I could see a PC release being part of the deal, even before Sony really started ramping up their PC ports, but not Xbox. Still...now that you mention it, I believe I do recall there being mention of Marvel approaching Sony, and Sony recommending Insomniac, so you might be correct about the sequence of events.

Mopes723d ago

If true, then I imagine there will be some disappointed Marvel fans... I myself don't really care for Marvel... Star Wars on the other hand...

EvertonFC723d ago

Most marvel fans are probably majority playstation so NO disappointed marvel fans?
Plus you're not much of a marvel fan if you didn't pickup a playstation to play a marvel game ?

babadivad723d ago

Star Wars died with The Force Awakens.

XiNatsuDragnel723d ago

Miss an opportunity in my opinion Microsoft.

Charlieboy333723d ago

Hopefully the assumption that Sony 'stole' Spider-man away from Xbox will come to an end now.

ShadowWolf712723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

It won't. There are still people who think they outright own the character and Marvel need their permission to even keep making comics with him in them, for crying out loud. Being accurate with claims is not the internet's strong suit.

Flawlessmic723d ago

Sony owns the movie rights to spider man, that is it. They have no control over marvel in regards to any other media entertainment, but i think people like to ignore that fact to suit there argument

RauLeCreuset723d ago

There may have still been some dealings involving the movie rights once that particular IP was settled on, but the bottom line is that it was Marvel who sought to make their IP exclusive, and Xbox passed on the opportunity.

ShadowWolf712723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

@RauLeCreuset There weren't. Insomniac got to pick an Ip to work with from a list. They chose Spider-Man after Marvel and Sony had already come to an agreement.

RosweeSon723d ago

Yep Microsoft literally could have had it for themselves. Instead chose to focus on all their IP’s like Banjo, Kameo, Project Gotham Racing, amped, midtown madness, perfect dark, fable. So uh where all these games at 🤨🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤣✌🏻

babadivad723d ago

Were people really saying this? This is the first time I've ever heard of this "rumor".

Microsoft's quest for short-term $$$ is doing long-term damage to Windows, Surface, Xbox, and beyond

Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.

"The plan to move Xbox games to other platforms is codenamed "Latitude" internally, and I know there's debate and unease at Microsoft about whether or not this is a good idea. More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's mandate to increase every department's margins. "

Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware.

Xeofate16h ago

"Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware."

It's for the best.

Quit stringing along xbox fans and screwing over PlayStation owners.

crazyCoconuts11h ago

Take good care of those Xboxes if you have 'em ...

outsider162411h ago

An Xbox game on a Playstation. Never in my years of gaming did i ever thought this was gonna happen.

jznrpg7h ago

It is dying anyway so doesn’t make much of a difference

VersusDMC7h ago

No way can they get rid of the hardware as probably 90% of game pass subscribers are hardware users.

Highly doubtful those users will move to PC or Cloud to subscribe there and the competition (Sony and Nin) will never have gamepass on their system.

If they want to keep the current subscribers, they need to keep releasing new hardware.

i think it will kill off the xbox brand. windows will be fine.

but there is and would be a chance that xbox might be killed off in the future. if they fail to make the money they put in. imo.

S2Killinit15h ago

They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

PRIMORDUS12h ago

It would be best if Xbox goes the way of Sega, just make and publish games. I know I myself will not support them at all with buying games from them, you all can. 🙃

ChasterMies10h ago

The Xbox brand will live for the games. I don’t expect Microsoft to entirely drop out of gaming hardware. They make Surface tablets and laptops. They’ll make Xbox branded hardware for those that want it.

shadowT17h ago

"Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation"

Forza and Starfield next?

Skuletor16h ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

shinoff218316h ago

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.

-Foxtrot16h ago

In the words of Phil Spencer when he was talking about Nintendo last year

“It's just taking a long time for Microsoft to see that their future exists off of their own hardware"

S2Killinit15h ago

Yup. MS are a cancer to console gaming.

Aloymetal15h ago

100%!!
I wonder what happened to that dude that was always here posting those court articles with cartoons about MS spending all those billions in studios. He suddenly disappeared, I guess he doesn't like bad news when the green brand is in trouble. No new articles from him as of late...

PRIMORDUS12h ago

Yup, and it's only going to keep spreading.

Epic Games Faces $1.2 Million Fine Over "Unfair Practices," Plans to Fight Back

Epic Games is facing a $1.2 million fine by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets over "unfair practices" in the Fortnite shop.

Sciurus_vulgaris1d 9h ago

It might be cheaper to simply pay the fine. Fighting said fine could cost millions due to court and lawyer fees. Fortnite generates well over a 100 million in each month, so Epic has plenty of cash.

franwex1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

But if they did pay it, then they are basically admitting that they did something they weren’t supposed to be doing. If they fight it, they may win and continue to have a sense of urgency for their micro transactions thus making more money long term.

Goodguy0117h ago(Edited 17h ago)

Meaning more suits to follow from others if they don't fight as well.

Not a fan of Epic nor fortnite and their micro transactions. But the game is heavily supported and is free to play, all store items are completely cosmetic.

1d ago
Furesis20h ago

I'd fight back too. These are kinda meaningless reasons to fine someone like really for THAT. It's like they just wanted to make money or something.

Sephiroushin11h ago

There is a law for something, but even if its stupid follow it because if you break it you pay for it; if they knew they cant place a “buy now” in NL then just dont do it!
