Bethesda: An update on Redfall and Starfield.

Starfield and Redfall delayed to 2023.

"Here at Arkane Austin, we've decided to delay the launch of Redfall. The team needs more time to bring the game to life. Thank you so much for your continued support. Redfall is our most ambitious game yet, and we can’t wait to show it off soon. - Harvey Smith and Arkane Austin"

Doge732d ago

Sooo…what does Xbox have for 2022?

Terry_B732d ago

..gamepass? A ton of third party games you can also play on PC, Playstation and sometimes even on the Switch? Also DLC for Forza and Halo ..I guess.

darthv72732d ago

Well whatever they have will be shown next month.

Delays suck... but I have plenty of games to tide me over. Speaking of which.... backlogs suck too.

Terry_B732d ago

Nah..PC is the best platform right now. you get both sony and microsoft games + a ton more+ better prices + mods

Eonjay732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

Well this is better than releasing bugged out broken games and then acting like its okay or charming.
Also, this explains the lack of gameplay.

732d ago
RosweeSon732d ago

They got dlc for halo but not even finished that game, sounds about right 🙄🤣

PapaBop732d ago

@Terry_B basically yes, us PC gamers are just laughing along and lapping up all the goodies we get... while owning a second console in a PS and in my case, the Switch. I fail to logically understand MS's position in giving PC gamers access to their games but I'm sure not complaining and saving money compared to the PS3/X360 days.

jeromeface732d ago

@papabop they give them to pc to make sales... there's not even people jumping for xbox to justify development costs

Scissorman82732d ago

Don't forget about Deathloop!! XD

Om4ever731d ago

@lordofthecritics ... Good Idea ...pay the full Price for all these games. Excellent idea

I was thinking the exact same thing.Starfield was the only big big game I had on my radar for Xbox this year. So, what else is there?

SullysCigar732d ago

How many console sales did they bag off the back of this game releasing on time? Just like Halo Infinite before it.

Microsoft's tried and tested approach. Some people never learn; actions speak louder than words.

Once the games arrive - and if they're any good - there's a potential purchase to consider. Giving companies money in return for promises and disappointment is a mug's game.

EvertonFC732d ago

Don't you see a problem with that in year 2 of current gen for series S/X ?

Christopher732d ago

For me, it's Redfall as I like the concept. But I'm fine with the delay as long as it means a better end result. Arkane has been putting out good games, though, so I have some faith.

Neonridr732d ago

we shall see when they have their showcase I guess.

732d ago
LOGICWINS732d ago

You’ll know next month. I suspect Ubisoft+ being added to Game Pass is more likely now. While I’m not “upset” about Starfield missing 2022 (I anticipated the delay), they need to do something big to soften this blow.

Mr Pumblechook732d ago

I suspect Microsoft has arranged to reveal Ubisoft+ around the same time PlayStation Plus relaunch as a spoiler tactic - cheeky buggers! 😆

rippermcrip732d ago

This isn't happening. U+ cost the same as UGP. They aren't just going to give it away for free with UGP.

U+ is coming to Xbox and Playstation as a separate offer. It isn't going to be included for free with anything.

Guess we'll find out on June 12...

sparky77732d ago

Pretty much nothing now, easily the worst year Xbox has had, this is like XB1 level.

732d ago
LoveSpuds732d ago

@TheJackass
I guess Sifu, Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West and Ghostwire Tokyo don't count then?

Of course, there is still Forespoken and God of War Ragnarock, Diofield Chronicle and Stray coming this year off the top of my head that i am personally excited for. Also, some pretty strong rumours of PSVR2 which is quite exciting.

SullysCigar732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

It's heartening to see you, Obscure_Observer and others acknowledge this for what it is. A genuine shame for gaming.

I'm fed up with hoping xbox will be better, but I don't want PlayStation to have a free reign and get cocky. I want the old xbox back and this news has ended my faith in Phil for good.

We can only hope Starfield will be AMAZING as a result of this delay, but even that prospect is of little solace right now.

Apparently Sony got 2022 all for themselves.

Shame.

732d ago
ocelot07732d ago

@TheJackAss

They have already released GT7, Horizon Forbidden West and later in the year God Of War Ragnarok and Forspoken.

The fact is they have already released 2 high rated PlayStation exclusives so far this year. So go on what excuses do you have now.

sinspirit732d ago

No no no. Apppaarrently 2022 is the year of multiplats and cross gen. Didn't you hear? There is totally not just one single guy reposting this one-sided statement that belittles already released AAA exclusives and those that are scheduled and reassured to release on time for this year. Nonono. This one persons statement has convinced me because he keeps copy/pasting it. Why use critical thinking and fair judgement? That's just silly. If XBox can't have a good year then neither can PlayStation.

Elda732d ago

Guessing you've got another Forza to look forward to for this year?

LordoftheCritics732d ago

Apparently Sony got 2015 to 2022 all for themselves

/fixed

gamer7804732d ago

Well halo infinite releases this year, it’s basically beta right now

RedDevils731d ago

Just get a damn PS5 already, and stop wearing the MS goggle. PS5 + PC you can play all the games even if you want GP it also on PC.

porkChop732d ago

We'll just have to wait and see. Xbox has a showcase coming up on June 12. Forza Motorsport has been pretty heavily rumored for this year so that's likely. They also have a few 2nd Party games coming. One of those could potentially launch this year.

FlavorLav01732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

Jack squat….the same as always with the exception of 2 releases right before Christmas last year. So much for having 30 some odd studios… 2 years in and all we have are 2 big cross gen games on Xbox. And people wanna give Sony such a hard time yet they had 4 next gen only games in its 1st year on PS5.

Elda732d ago

Nothing. XB/MS will more than likely continue to release indie & low-budget titles for Gamepass.

purple101732d ago

When the games are on the shelf,. We will see.

Otherwise they can keep announcing games and not delivering them.. people can believe what they want but il be playing ( along with many others)

ratchet&clank and gt7.

Still got spiderman miles.morales to catch up on too

ABizzel1732d ago

It's not about believing what anyone wants to believe it's just logic and facts. If they're going to have any games that release this year they will be announced with dates at their show on June 12th so we'll find out what they have in a month, and they announced Forza Motorsport 5 and launched it in the same year, so any games launching in 2022 will be announced at this show.

That's not to say 2022 isn't looking barren for them because it is. So far what's "left" is:

STALKER 2 (possibly getting delayed)
Ark 2 (possibly getting delayed)
Scorn (looks like a poor man's Doom)
Lost Eidolons (looks like a poor man's PC RTS)
Somerville (a unique indie)
Little Witch in the Woods (another indie)
Immortality (an interactive trailer, so I wouldn't even count this as a game)
And maybe Forza Motorsport especially if the rumors are true that it's a cross-gen game.

So their 2022 line-up is looking pretty poor, but again the show will confirm or improve it. At this point I don't even know why it's being called the Xbox + Bethesda show since the two big Bethesda games for the year aren't going to be released this year. I guess they'll still show the games, and maybe some other projects, but it seems like GamePass is going to carry Xbox in 2022 until they can bank on the Activision deal, and if that goes through then GamePass is going to be flooded with Activision games that month.

neutralgamer1992732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

No one should be surprised at all. We saw nothing about starfield. Hopefully this delay is from Ms wanting better quality. We all know it didn't work out with halo infinite even with a delay and till this day that game is no where near ready

I am signed up for GP for 3 years I guess nothing but wait haha 😅

One fear people have of GP is that quality of games will suffer. Hopefully that's not the case. AAA games take time and resources, so I for one wouldn't mind a mixture of quality AAA and AA games

Two years after launch and not a single Xbox exclusive for Series X/S.

The bar was so low that only Xbox could find a way to trip over it

gangsta_red732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

I don't see how GP effects game development, especially since most games outside of GP have released unfinished or with huge issues.

This delaying games is an all to common practice in the gaming industry that needs to be corrected.

gamer7804732d ago

Kinda glad honestly. Too many games being shipped half baked. And I have hogwarts legacy and Gotham knights coming in the fall which is plenty in addition to sea of thieves and other games We are playing.

gangsta_red732d ago

But being delayed doesn't gaurantee the game will release without issues.

In fact we have seen the opposite, games being delayed and still releasing with a ton of gameplay issues and graphical bugs.

I've said this before many times in the past and even now, but there needs to be a revamp in development for this industry. They're pushing graphics and more powerful hardware, but it seems they're not advancing any tools to make developing games easier and faster.

gamer7804732d ago

@gangstared you are not wrong , there will be issues but I’m talking cyberpunk and halo infinite level of disaster. So the game isn’t a failure.

732d ago
GamesAsAService732d ago

I guess we will have to see what xbox has to show at their showcase in june.

Plagasx732d ago

Yea..can't wait to see what games they will show off that will most likely release NEXT year... -_-

RosweeSon732d ago

For next year? I ain’t buying a console and waiting 3 years for some games for it 😏✌🏻😜

Lightning77732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

Absolutely nothing. Just more waiting it seems.... That's all there is for Xbox.

Tetsujin732d ago

You can tell the ones upset by this news because they're on sites like this more than actual gaming.

Anyways I won't buy a new console until the games I want are already available so I have a start somewhere, instead of buying now and hoping later.

Chevalier732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

Funny I said Redfall and Starfield were ooking like it would be delayed and someone said no way that happens!..... till it does.

Aloymetal732d ago

Hopes, dreams and wishful thinking, like every other gen.

Silly Mammo732d ago

So maybe Starfield comes out at the end of the year. MS and its fans ignore the rest of year and will claim that Xbox Won the Holidays. All the gaming website will state MS Dominated 2022. We've all read this story before...

LordZ732d ago Show
Zeref732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

Forza Motorsport, Halo Infinite Battle Royale, Stalker 2(maybe), Warhammer Darktide and probably a few 3rd party GamePass games

RpgSama732d ago

They are doing the same thing they did with Halo, sold a bunch of yearly gamepass subscriptions on the promise of these games coming out in 2022 and then delayed them to 2023, once they come out, they will be a incomplete game with the promise of more to come and by then they will focus on a new set of games to over promise, delay and the under deliver.

TheGreatGazoo30732d ago

There is no such thing as a yearly GamePass subscription.

PapaBop732d ago

Get it right and release it when it's ready, I hope Microsoft's acquisition allows them to do their thing without the suits looking to meet yearly targets breathing down their neck. Bethesda might happily claim to be behind the cultural phenomenon that is Skyrim but they far more recently released the garbage that was Fallout 76.

Godmars290732d ago

Thing is what's going to be shown at the showcase Seconds of mock CG gameplay intermixed with concept art as devs talk it up, or actual minutes of actual gameplay?

Zeref732d ago

Actually thats standard Bethesda practice. They usually show of gameplay the year their games releases.

However the pandemic probably had more impact than they anticipated.

Terry_B731d ago

"StarkR3ality18h ago Inappropriate
Bit over the top, yes it's shit time for Xbox, but to say the game is shit before it's released just shows that you're a bit of a retard."

raiden.....well not just any new console, a ps5. they have proven time and time again to have the best 1st party studios. its not even a matter of opinion, it is a fact. Sony 1st party studios trounce xbox, its slmost comical how bad they are in comparison. playstation already got HFW and gt7 this year. If ragnarok releases this yr as expected, that is 3 goty contenders in 2022 alone.

Pepin732d ago

tay, I have a PS5, XSX, XSS, Switch, and PC. I just really like OlliOlli World.

darkrider732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

I think this isn't even a surprise. Zero gameplay of the games... Another great year from Microsoft. They were really prepared for next Gen.... No doubt they will now buy another publisher that got games for 2022 or pay hundreds of millions to get day one games from another studio. It's the only path they got... Great work from Phil. He was able to have less games this Gen then last gen... He really turn things around. I have no doubt that anybody would do a better job, because worst is just impossible. Gamers are buying the console even without a single new game... And he cant use that...

MrBaskerville732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

It is a slow start, but there's no doubt the Series X will get a ton of exclusives by 2023 or perhaps 2024. At some point all the acquistions will pay off.

A lot of the studios they acquired were finalizing third party games, so obviously there's a slight delay before stuff happens.

darkrider732d ago

This Gen started on 2020 and you are talking about 2023 and 2024. The main problem of last gen for Microsoft was lack of games and this Gen its even worse. This after buying publishers and not having any games on the end of last gen.

tay8701732d ago

keep telling yourself that. tell me what has the initiative, the coalition or obsidian released. meanwhile in the past 2 yrs alone insomniac has released MM and rift apart. next yr they sre releasing spiderman 2 and also have wolverine and a rumored gaas marvel game in the works releasing on 2024. xbox 1st part games are incompetent at best.

MrBaskerville732d ago (Edited 732d ago )

I'm not defending the lack of games in recent years. But if we look at studios owned by MS and games released in the last 2-3 years, there's a significant amount of stuff, so logically we'll get a tighter release schedule at some point.

But it's going to take time, that's the downside of buying studios and publishers that have pripr commitments. When they bought Inxile, they had to wait for them to finish a third party game they were currently working on, same with Obsidian, most Bethesda studios and Double Fine.

I'm not too impressed by their output so far, but there's no way it can continue. Unfortunately game development takes time and MS didn't seem to be particularily prepared for Series X. But at some point they'll get the ball rolling.

RosweeSon732d ago

There’s every doubt they’ve not released a single game on time this gen and it’s been years now, wake up, shiiii 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷 🏻‍♂️🤣 a slight delay is a few weeks or a month or 3 these games been bandied around since launch and by the time they actually do you’ll be looking at the console having been available and on sale for near enough 3 years that’s just not acceptable, by that time they’ll be introducing X Series 2.0 🙄🤣 literally conned people into buying a console and then delayed 9/10 games or just released them unfinished like Halo

RedDevils731d ago

By the time they ready, Sony ready to release the PS6 lmao

Would It Have Even Mattered If Redfall Were Good?

Even if Redfall were a good game, the closure of Hi-Fi Rush proves even that doesn't matter in the industry.

thegamer.com
Profchaos1d 3h ago

Yeah it would have mattered especially since their huge game that year wasn't all that it was cracked up to be remember redfail was almost heavily promoted and hyped not to the level of starfield but still more promoted than the average game.

There was still a decent marketing campaign behind the game I'm sure millions were spent advertising it on websites and I saw a few billboards and bus stop signs in real life

darthv7211h ago

their biggest mistake was showcasing it as being a 60fps game only to release it at 30. That really soured the taste so that when the real 60fps mode was released, many still didnt want to give it a taste. i tierd it at 30... it was okay, but playing it at 60 is a much better experience and a better overall game. Its really not that bad once you get past the drama surrounding its initial release and just play it for what it is. It has some pretty decent aspects but nothing groundbreaking. It feels like a typical fps from the ps360 days... of which there were many.

jwillj2k41d 3h ago

No it wouldn’t matter it wouldn’t bring in enough profit to offset their 100 billion dollar acquisition. It would maybe delay the inevitable by some months.

Profchaos18h ago

Pretty much no game in Bethesda stables makes cod numbers instantly even fallout 4 Bethesda's best selling game sold 12 million at launch and over the next 10 years climbed to over 32 which cod would do rapidly

CrimsonWing691d 2h ago

I would f*cking think so. Good games are what draws people to your platform. It’s why I adored the 360 era with Gears of War being one of the highlights for me. You make sh*t games and it just makes your platform that much worse and you start gobbling up studios I like and then killing them off it also makes me hate your platform as well… just sayin’

franwex1d 2h ago

Unless the game would’ve been War Zone, or Fortnite level. No. Maybe even Hell divers 2 I doubt would’ve been enough.

Eonjay6h ago

Helldivers 2 realistically has earned about half a billion which is definitely a success considering it probably cost Sony $50 million to make.

However you would still need 140 releases to at least be that successful to break even on a ACT purchase.

This is how you know the goal for Microsoft was to reach those crazy subscribers numbers. Without them the whole plan falls apart.

Exvalos1d 1h ago

No it would not have, the ABK deal was great for Microsoft but horrible for Xbox. Over 100 billion dollars in acquisitions. That money has to be made back. That ABK deal essentially destroyed Xbox as we know it.

A Flawed Game Till The Very End, Redfall Deserved To Die, But Not Arkane Austin

Hanzala from eXputer: "Redfall was a bland, repetitive game with no post-release support; it deserved to die, but why kill Arkane Austin over one mistake?"

z2g4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

What short memories everybody has. According to the internet they became “the worst studio” after redfall… the internet made redfall a bigger deal than redfall just being a shitty game becaus *gasp* Xbox bought them and” just wanted shitty gamepass games so quality wasn’t a priority”.
(The reality was it was just rushed to market to fill a release hole).

Everybody wants Xbox to fail but as soon as closures start happening suddenly that was never the hope at all and Xbox is just evil.

What has happened to humanity. Being so extreme with viewpoints paints everybody into a hypocritical corner where the side of the story your on depends on which side makes Xbox look worse. Read the internet. Your disagrees are lies.

Shame. Gamers never want to accept their role in all the shit.

My heart goes out to those laid off. Not sure why those studios had to close but I suspect they were costing more money to operate than they were brining in revenue. It does cost money to fix games. Cyberpunk’s road to redemption was prob approaching the price of the original game.

That sucks and I’m angry about it but that’s also business and I’m in the same boat myself at my job as we speak… so it’s not like I don’t have sympathy. But I’m tired of the short memories, the lack of true empathy and opinions being driven by branding. Disgusting.

MIDGETonSTILTS174d ago

People wanted Xbox to succeed, especially after THE biggest media acquisition in history and effectively owning the entire existing Western RPG genre; but we knew they would fail, and they’d drag down an entire genre with them.

Nobody wanted this, but it was foreseen.
