Ghost of Tsushima Wins Player's Voice Award at The Game Awards

Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima managed to win the 'Player's Voice' prize at The Game Awards 2020, as announced just today.

Fair play to Ghost, especially for winning while being a new IP. They particularly deserve it for adding in Legends for free.

We all know that liars like TheQuartering are going to use this as proof that people hated TLOU2 though so I think its important to lay out the facts: TLOU2 came 2nd place in the final round and got significantly more votes than all the other games below it combined (Doom Eternal, Spiderman: Miles Morales, Hades). It was also beating Ghost for a lot of the competition.

Logically, it couldn't have even gotten to the final round (also beating games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Animal Crossing) and gotten to a strong second place if a lot of people didn't enjoy it. And this is with people determined to make sure it lost.

Because they desperately seek validation. They can't even stand getting more down votes than up votes on N4G. The game will have it's critics like any other, but this one has attracted a contingent of them who have always relied on validation, being in the majority, to make up for what their arguments lack in substance. The masses have spoken. The game is an unmitigated success and well received by just about every significant metric if not all of them. That reality broke a lot of haters, as is clearly on display.

I disagree Ghost is the better game, but thinking a game is better than another is completely subjective.

TLOU2 had me engaged from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down and kept wanting to see where the story went. I enjoyed the 'shades of grey' themes of the story. Stuck with me after. Enjoyed the world and characters much more than Ghost.

Ghost has really fun combat, but the story couldn't keep me interested. I find Jin a rather dull character.

I also think TLOU2 is a technically superior game.

TLOU2 is one of the very best games made but some people felt because it made strong social commentary that means it was more worthy than others, that isn't the case, player enjoyment is more important than political comment. The reality is this was not what everybody wanted in a game especially as it was different from what people who played the first game were expecting.

You pointed out the Quartering as if he is an enemy who stirred up the public to do this - the truth is he's just one loud voice of criticism and he alone did not cancel the influence of Kotaku, Polygon and Vice Waypoint who championed it.

The simple reality is more people had a positive emotional reaction when playing The Ghost of Tsushima. It was an open world game in a new environment that modernised old gameplay tropes to present a unique and compelling adventure, that was respectful of Japanese culture, that's why the game won. My respect goes to all the entries but especially the winner Sucker Punch.

I love both SuckerPunch's and NaughtyDog's games, and both of these games are great. I'm just highlighting that TLOU2 did well so that people like Foxtrot can't get away with spreading misinformation which he was excited to do.

For example, he keeps claiming that the reason TLOU2's user score increased so much is because all the 0s were removed which never happened (no evidence) and that this was done with a 3 day delay applied to TLOU2. I linked an article showing that that policy didn't even come in until weeks after TLOU2 so that was impossible. I asked for evidence and he too embarrassed to link the crazy Youtubers who told him that the 0s were removed.

He then claimed that the policy for the delays for user scores for the first 3 days of release came ... weeks after TLOU2 was released. haha. He doesn't care about facts.

A lot of people were disappointed in The Last of Us 2. A lot of people enjoyed it. Between your example of FF7 and Last of Us, you don't factor in the unknown variables (comparison between end-user ratio, awareness of the actual vote, etc.).

Personally I think it's fine - Nowhere near GoTY, but a solid 6-7/10.
The gameplay was fine, the storytelling was a mess, the characters were lazily written.
The animations, VA work, and graphics were all amazing though definitely!

And then on the other end of the aisle, you have people who really enjoy the game and doesn't find faults with it, and that's fine as well.

I believe that other games besides Ghost of Tsushima or TLOU2 would have gotten a lot more votes if social media didn't turn it into a battle between two games. Ultimately I am happy with the winner and think it deserved the win. I didn't play TLOU2 but I watched someone else play and even if you took the story out of it I didn't think there was anything great about it. Then again I had a hard time playing the first game because I just didn't find it that fun. I Loved both too! And while TLoU2 is my personal favorite game of the year, I absolutely was blown away by it, gameplay/story had me on the edge of my seat, GoT was really amazing in its own right and a complete joy to play & a breath of fresh air right after the brutality that came with TLoU2 and it’s story/unforgiving world that I just couldn’t handle anymore lol mentally/emotionally. The beautiful artistic design, gameplay, which was fluid, brutal, fast and amazing in its own right, and an intriguing story to boot, an amazing game overall.

Sony’s got 2 studios who I believe are no doubt proud in their talented teams and Sony’s no doubt proud in them, as us gamers are.

The combat alone makes if phenominal. The whole combat set-up is amazing for an openworld game. There are no bullet sponge enemies at later points in the game, the enemies are just better at fighting and are more skilled the more you progress. Loved every minute of the game.

The reason people are happy it lost is 2 fold.

Firstly, anyone that criticises the game is labeled a bigot, so it's refreshing to see people en masse voting in spite of the hateful rhetoric directed towards them.

Secondly, the far left gaming journalist were tripping over themselves to vote for it in other goty awards. Instead of voting for it for it's own merit, they were voting on political grounds. It's been an utterly pathetic display by a group of people that are suppose to be "professionals", but they are anything but. This big win by GoT is a well deserved slap in the face to these bigoted gatekeepers.

I don't see it quite this way... these kind of votes don't mean anything, especially in the circustamces of the hate around TLoU2.
The game probably lost because most of the people that voted were actually haters, it's the review bombing story all over again.

People that are angry and upset for their reasons would fight to the death and vote with multiple accounts to make the game lose.
Those who liked the game? They didn't even know about this prize or didn't care.

I personally love the game, I don't give a damn about druckmann, false advertising and all those stories, I just genuinely enjoyed the game and it's my favourite of the generation. And I didn't vote, because this doesn't mean anything to me.

So, to see this as a "slap in the face" to Naughty Dog is quite gullible IMHO. It's just the proof that people's hate doesn't cool down after some months, even if it's just a videogame.

I can't say that it totally deserves the win over The Last of Us2, as I havent played tlou2 yet. I've owned both since release. Right before buying tlou2 I had finished playing the Nathan Drake Collection and was a little burnt out on Naughty Dog games. I opted to play Ghost instead and was glad that I did as I was looking for something different.

I definitely have to play tlou2 because the first game was amazing and I expect no less from the second.

That’s awesome to hear the game effected you in that way, bud. For real, it was an experience! So much so...The Last of Us Part 2.. never have myself or fiancé been so emotionally moved & connected and distraught every time we played. ND took gameplay/story/game design/graphics/audio /everything to a completely new level and I can say gameplay is simply unmatched (thanks to that motion matching technology) that every time I go back to play, each encounter still feels so cinematic, so so fluid, it’s insane how fluid it is, and just awesome. Best game I’ve ever played.

I don't think there will be issues for future games seeing their track record. But if such a successful sequel is considered a "fail", I cant imagine what people would say if they actually released a legitimately bad game. TLOU2 is far from a bad game. Sure the writing and plot could have been different but I was happy with how the game turned out and it brought out emotions I haven't received from a game since the original. I look forward to part 3 if there ever is one. Naughty Dog has a BIG reputation to uphold and I know Sony would jump in before their reputation starts slipping through cracks.

YES!!!!! Fun still triumphs over political agenda. But really, congrats definitely should go to Sucker Punch for their efforts. It really was an excellent game and it's good to hear everyone appreciated their work so, good job to everyone as well. It's not that The Last of Us II was bad, because Naughty Dog did it right, perfect? No. The stealth mechanics still needed work but, if I want to be preached to, Naughty Dog, I'll go to church. I don't want an attempt to gilt-trip me or tell me how to live my life in video games. Believe it or not, people are more accepting when it's not forced on them, when it's natural over the course of time, people make do, but they certainly don't want to be told how to live their life, why do you think society has become more (rapidly) I can't think of the word at the moment, where people just sway away from religion.... That's why! We don't want to be preached to on "how unfair everyone is" because they're not. You're not gonna find a game now of a cop beating up someone of color, because that's poor taste, plain and simple.

I loved Ghost of Tsushima way more than I thought I would (especially with the game being open world), the trailers really didn't do the game justice! I was constantly in awe of the visuals, easily the most time I've spent in photo mode.

TLOU2 is a very different game, but wins out for me personally. The acting, the production values, the tense gameplay, the audio design and the way the story affected me is exactly why I play games. I was completely lost in that world for my 40+ hour playthrough.

Bravo ND & Sucker Punch, you outdid yourselves.
