Best RPG of 2019

VGChartz's Ben Dye: "The RPG genre has had decades of glory. For years, games in which you play a crucial role as a central character have been released, generation after generation. The genre isn’t going anywhere and is only continuing to evolve from its more simplistic roots into something that can be overwhelming for some and pure joy for others. Side quests, open worlds, the removal of invisible walls, and the introduction of more player choice and agency than ever before are just some of the areas where RPGs have evolved over time. With that evolution, wonderful looking and playing RPGs have continued to be enjoyed all over the world. Here are this year’s nominees."

Outer Worlds, and Disco Elysium made this a freaking fantastic year for rpg fans.

coolbeans1604d ago

I'd add Greedfall to that list.

MadLad1604d ago (Edited 1604d ago )

Surprised I forgot to include that one. I've played pretty much every Spiders game, but Greedfall was the first time it really felt like they managed to produce the game they aspired to make. One of my favorite games of this year, and excited to see what's down the road. They now have a publisher willing to put more money behind their titles too.

**"I'd add Greedfall to that list"**

I've just finished up Disco Elysium for the third time and I'm looking for my next big adventure.

I'm hearing good things about Greedfall, What's so good about the game in your opinion and is there anything I might have played you could compare it to?

Wasabi1604d ago (Edited 1604d ago )

@Ted

Disco is probably my favourite game this year, I love the characters and setting and I found the writing to be superb. I'm glad it finally got some recognition and it set for a 2020 release on consoles, I was afraid it may fly under the radar for a lot of players.

coolbeans1604d ago

I'm on the opposite end of that spectrum: Greedfall was my first Spiders game I played and I'm interested in hopping into their past works (even if they're less polished). Given their reputation, I'm with you on this feeling like their breakout hit. Even financially, it's performed incredibly well for Focus Home on the steam charts.

-"They now have a publisher willing to put more money behind their titles too."

True, but Big Ben Interactive is such a weird entity to me. I really hope Big support them well, but also hope they're able to keep questionable monetary practices from infiltrating.

Really surprised that, out of those available, Disco Elysium didn't win. Outer Worlds is a "solid" RPG but not really noteworthy for awards or GotY material for me. Disco Elysium played amazing for what I played (only 45m or so) and Greedfall, while rough on some areas, did things that we've wanted AAA RPG studios to do for a long while.

coolbeans1603d ago

Since the staff/user split is right down the middle, I think it's more a case of Worlds' popularity overwhelming Disco's intrigue and uniqueness. Were it a summer release with more people having a chance to try it? The results could've been different.

King_Noctis1603d ago

Can you imagine a Disco Elysium 2 with bigger budget, bigger world, and full voice acting? Any big publishers should really pick this game up and support this IP.

bluefox7551603d ago

I think I need to give Disco Elysium a try.

King_Noctis1603d ago

Disco Elysium, Outer Worlds, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, and DQ XI S are some of my most favorite RPG this year.

coolbeans1603d ago

Fire Emblem was a candidate under the 'Strategy/Sim' category during the vote process.

King_Noctis1603d ago

It is a hybrid though. Just like Persona which is a hybrid of RPG and turn based genre.

RedDevils1603d ago

Outer Worlds also look more like FPS game as well.

coolbeans1602d ago (Edited 1602d ago )

I mean...you gotta take it up with virtually every other site in respect to these hybrids, then. The Game Awards and other prominent places who give prizes have all placed it in the strategy genre.

Great series I'd encourage people to try out, but I'm not sure you should start with 3.

shinoff218333d ago

I've finally got the whole series on ps4/ps5 besides the sky triology. I'm going to play the sky games on steam and move onto the Playstation ones. I've been dying to get into it.

raWfodog33d ago

Yeah he mentioned that in the article.

Knightofelemia33d ago

I was going to but 3 and 4 on PS4 but when I read they both were hitting PS5 I just waited. My problem is I have a shit load of games I have to work on.

Barlos33d ago

But I don't want to. Please don't make me

gold_drake33d ago

my issue is that they are still very expensive games and those games are a commitment ha.
