The thing with comparing Gears to these other games is that you have to factor in that it is also running at 60fps, unlike GoW and UC4 and the games Angelic listed. It also only sacrifices down to 30fps when it does splitscreen co-op which again is something those other games don't provide.

I'd be willing to bet that Gears 5 could have surpassed these other titles in raw visuals if it didn't have to hit 60fps or have split-screen co-op to accommodate for.

If gears had settled on a lower frame rate, then they'd probably be in the same league as Sony titles, but they didn't, and I appreciate that. I'll take frame rate over graphics any day. Even on PC though, it just isn't on the same level as other games. Definitely better than most from MS though. This has come from Forbes though, so to be expected.

Funny thing is XboneX version has basically the same graphical fidelity as version on XboneS. Probably, since XboneX is most powerful console around, it wasn't so hard to push it up to 60fps and from 1080p-1800p dynamic res on XboneX.

He's talking about the digital foundry piece that shows Gears 5 uses dynamic resolutions in order to maintain 60 FPS. The resolution drops as low as 1584p. This isn't a deal breaker by any means. Moving forward I expect to see every piece of software utilizing dynamic resolutions for backwards compatibility next gen. MS has been doing this since Halo 4. It should in theory make ps4/xbox one games render in 4K on next gen hardware w/o the need of patches (at least I hope) like 360 enhanced titles.

Sure a game can look and feel much more playable when running at 60 fps or better but some games are fine when they run at around 30 fps providing the framerate is consistent. Of course, whether a particular game genre is liked by a payer is subjective but consistent framerate followed by resolution (720p {low-end}, 1080p and higher) can improve the playability of the game.

Of course, a very important part of gaming and one that is sometimes overlooked is the display and its screen size relative to where the player is viewing. Sound (background music if any) is also a major factor, too much or too little volume or repetition can ruin the immersion.

Wow that really shows what they cut from the game to reach the quality they wanted. You can see the water animations are downgraded, the destruction is downgraded, the character animations are downgraded, the atmosphere is nothing like the originals, the weapons and gore are weak.

I'm playing gears at 4k using ultra settings on a PC and I think the other GOW (God of War) on a PS4 Pro is a prettier game. Gears of War 5 is pretty inconsistent with textures, where you'll see jarringly bad renditions from time to time. God of War seemed more polished overall. Prettier is subjective though. I definitely agree God of war was very polished, but it's not 4k nor is it 60 fps, you can arguably offset some bad textures with double the frame rate. Gears 5 is also much less linear than before with a ton of enemies on screen at once. I didn't play on 4k, but it looks just as polished on regular settings, 4k tends to highlight texture inconsistencies more.

I noticed plenty of bad textures in God of War also, but the overall look and design is fantastic. Even the most beautiful games will still have bad textures if you get up in the nitty gritty. I dare you to get to the part where the world serpent dips down into the lake and open his mouth, but row past his mouth and follow his body... his body textures look like smeared bubble gum.

But I'm not trying to talk crap on GoW, it's a beautiful game, just saying that even the most beautiful games still have areas with low textures if you get up close and personal and check them out.

Frame rate isn't a measure of how graphics look. Frame rate may have an effect on how good graphics can look, but for comparisons sake, it's not exactly what I'd call comparable.

If the game looks better, it looks better. Doesn't matter if what looks better looks better 30 times, or 60 times per second.

An interesting facet to this whole discussion is that people seem to be leaning on resolution and frame rate in addition to it being a good looking game. But they only refer to the x1x in those comparisons. Whereas on the ps4, things like god of war or horizon look good on the base console. Gears 5 looks acceptable in the ogx1, but I wouldn't say the best looking of the gen. Square did better work on the ogx1 with tomb raider IMO. I'm not judging it on subjective matters of art style, but more quantifiable measures that I've looked at to see what kinds of rendering techniques they used in lighting or shading. Certainly looks good, but best looking can be hardware subjective.

What do you mean by such a powerhouse? X1X has better capabilities than a Pro by only a small margin, why should games like head and shoulders above any PS4 game released? You realize many multiplatform games look better on the X1X right? Also your bias is highlighted by assuming only PS4 exclusives are being compared to. I could argue Battlefield 5 or Red dead 2 look better than any other game considering how huge their draw distances are and the enormous battles that Battlefield can handle.

Again point is it’s all arguable, but the PS4 isn’t automatically omitted. If you’re comparing graphics you compare across platform, nothing wrong with that. I think those games are par with Uncharted 4 graphically but what sets uncharted 4 apart from horizon and god of war are the details like the physics, water ripples and how they interact with wind and Nathan. As a whole uncharted 4 is overall more impressive than gears and those games.

All i play is PlayStation, but imo UC4 graphics are a bit dull. Recently played it for the first time and i was very disappointed by the graphics and its only 30fps. Horizon's facial animations were as bad as Mass Effect Andromedas, not sure why people insist that looks better. God of war had a lot of inconsistency; anything in the distance didn't look great. Atreus looked awful at times.

When I started Gears 5, the poor water reactions stood out, easily beaten by Uncharted 4 in terms of attention to detail and environmental interactivity. But looking at them both, I think Gears 5 looks better most of the time. I already thought Red Dead 2 on the X looked better than UC4 though.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if The Last of Us 2 looks better.

Uh no, the jump in graphical fidelity between gears 4 and 5 isn't that big(there's some lighting and model upgrades but largely looks similar, it has a higher frame rate & resolution target on Xbox one x but it's graphical fidelity is overall not that much higher. plenty of video comparisons show this)

The jump between uncharted 3 and 4 is massive (which is to be expected with hardware differences, graphical fidelity, resolution are leaps and bounds higher than 3 and with a more consistent frame rate.

Honestly don't see the massive praise in graphics gears 5 is getting when it really does overall look similar to gears 4 in terms of graphical fidelity, while the frame rate and resolution of the X version is pretty good, it's just not graphically good looking as its being made out to be.

If we're really talking best looking... FROM AN OBJECTIVE TECHNICAL STANDPOINT (which is possible).
The winner so far is Detroit: Become Human. Nothing looks better and has as many effects going on to convince you the world is real plus pristine image quality (which even Driveclub admittedly lacks).

Now Driveclub is still the bar that I hold developers to when discussing world building and immersion and Ghosts of Tsushima looks to possibly rival Driveclub's visuals and manage to be set in an open world iIrc. That might become the new bar to beat this generation. One thing that WipEout: The Omega Collection, Driveclub and GT Sport have over Gears 5 is a rock solid nearly flawless framerate. Of course people erroneously say racing games are easier to make and render (because hundreds of thousands of polys per car and 24 cars on track plus the environment must be easy to push at 60hz). Now GT Sport can drop from 60 during replays and in se very specific instances Driveclub can tear also only during replays while I haven't seen WipEout drop or tear anything on PS4 and I don't even own a PS4 Pro!

As an added bonus none of the games I mentioned save for Ghosts of Tsushima (which isn't out yet) use dynamic frame buffers or image reconstruction techniques.

Detroit certainly was a step up for QD. Their other games tended to use a lot of contemporary styling in the environments which are less detailed and more angular, which is good for poly counts. Deteoit though had quite a range of different things going on, and there was a lot of detail in almost everything. Faces are probably the best I've seen in any game to date...which is expected of QD.

Why shouldn't we discuss how most players are still only getting 30hz on XOS? GT Sport is 60FPS regardless of what PS4 you play it on, same for Ace Combat 7 and many UE4 titles on base model PS4s. Of course Pro and X will manage 60FPS better... That should be obvious they're more powerful devices! What's impressive is how many Pro titles also run at 60 FPS on base PS4s. Everyone gets the same gameplay experience regardless of what device they choose.

That's obviously not the case on Xbox... How much more skill do you think is needed to make a game like GT Sport and Ace Combat 7 run on weaker hardware than PS4 Pro?

Remember Xbox One is the low bar (excluding the now discontinued Wii U and Nintendo's replacement for that the Switch of course). Now PS4 has about 40% more compute performance than Xbox One (the S is barely more powerful than the original Xbox One models). PS4 Pro is about twice as powerful as base models and The X is about 40% better than Pro meaning X is a bit more than 3 times as powerful as the OG XO!

Is it really impressive that this game still isn't rendering natively at 4K resolution and can still dip below 60FPS while being less dynamic than games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4 or even PS4 launch titles with unlocked framerates like Infamous Second Son or Killzone Shadow Fall???

Only ever having played Gears 1, I think the more diverse color pallet actually hurts the visuals. I suppose the darker environments were better at concealing certain graphical limitations. Gears 5 looked distinctly reminiscent of the first Uncharted game on PS3 in a number of ways. Smooth, brilliant character models, lighting and effects, but otherwise underwhelming. Gears 5 looks better than anything on PS4 Pro. Playstation guys need to take the L and wait to redeem themselves on the next title. You guys still have Last of US 2 coming sure that will surpass Gears 5 relax.......damn.

First of all, its not the best looking game, unless you are blind.
Whats the point of all of this really? The game is getting praised for graphics, that doesnt matter considering the shitty competitive state of its multiplayer. The multiplayer turned from a hardcore difficult gears of war game to casual lancer battles with unbalanced weapons just to appeal to different audience. Those dumb developers took away what made gears great, which is the highly competitive multiplayer. I remember playing gears 1 two years after it released and lobbies were full and it was very competitive. Gears nowadays tries so hard to appeal to different people. People who will finish the campaign and then uninstall the game.

Lets make the characters movement ridiculously fast, lets buff the lancer so the cod players have fun, lets put a lot of a explosive weapons and make it chaotic, lets focus less on the gore and add an option to turn it off, lets put LGBTQ flags to encourage all people. Just why? Can you imagine a mortal kombat game where you have an option to turn off gore? Why the fuck would you change what made your game great in the first place, just to appeal to different audience.

This game is in the wrong hands im afraid, and its getting butchered, and fans of the trilogy know it. This game went from 90+ on metacritic to 80+, and the trailer view numbers on youtube is a joke compared to other AAA games which means that no one is that hyped. This game needs to return to its hardcore competitive roots, and we need the gritty and depressing gears of war. I loved xbox 360 era, xbox was known for hardcore competitive multiplayer games such as halo 3 and gears1. Those games were so competitive and the skill gap can get huge and its why people loved them.

Sadly, xbox is something else these days.

Gotta be honest, although I think the game looks great I don't see what people are meaning by this game looking better than anything on 1X or PS4 Pro. Then there are people who are saying it's the best looking game all gen too. For reference I'm playing the game on PC at 4K/Ultra 60+ fps with some settings pushed to the Insane option (the ones that allow it). With that I'm still seeing a fair amount of low res textures in places and some of the character models that aren't the main cast leave something to be desired.

I'd probably put gears 5 in mid top 10 best looking games this gen though (maybe at 5 or 6), with it being top 5 on console specifically. But best overall? I can't co-sign that

I haven't had a chance to play it since there is no demo and I don't have the funds to get Game Pass right now (money is very tight for me right now).
So based on what I have seen from Gears 4 and the new videos for Gears 5, reviews and tech dives it just looks like a standard run of the mill game. I don't have a good grasp on the story Gears 4 was fun so I'd assume Gears 5 is more f the same on that front but from the tech perspective it looks average for a large AAA developer working exclusively for a single platform.

I am primarily a PS4 guy. I've actually leaned more towards Sony for the past 3 generations, even though I have owned all of the XBox consoles during that time frame, including the beastly 1X.

But even the most dyed in the wool Sony loyalist must tip their hat to what The Coalition achieved here. It is nothing short of spectacular. My mind was blown from the moment the game booted up and I was in the training sessions with Jack. Everything is just mesmerizing.

Adding that "PS4 can't match" was totally out of place considering that PS4 has many exclusive games that looks, feels and plays way better than Gears 5.
