When it comes to sales, trying to say it would definitely have sold much better on the Wii at this point in time. Speculation. But they do make a good point about tossing it in with every console sold. One problem though, that's the kind of thing you do after the Holidays are over or once sales start to decline enough. You let the sales climb over the Holidays and after the Holidays you offer a package PS3 w/ LBP. But why give away the game when you can bank on sales now and then make it into a juggernaut once the drought hits....

I don't recall Sony telling everyone that they were releasing a Mario-killer. I do recall people comparing Sackboy to Mario, and saying that he was better in almost everyway, but I didn't catch the Sony press release. Sony, however, may have found themselves a new mascot. I also, don't understand how this game has been selling so "terribly" when nearly every person on my friends list is playing it (20 people). Wait I thought LBP was suppose to be a system seller? I thought it was suppose to move so much PS3s last month that there will be a shortage of PS3s? Funny because a month ago every PS3 fanboy on this site were all saying how LBP will help overtake the PS3 over the 360. Now all the PS3 fan sounded like they ate a piece of humble pie.

The problem with LBP is that its on the PS3... Seriously I know there a lot of girly PS3 fans(specially in this site) but this game was made for little kids which makes up less than 1% of PS3 owners. If this game was on the Wii it would be selling like hot cakes. If this game was on the 360 it would sell a lot better than the PS3 but not as good as the wii. Everybody knows 90% of wii owners are probably under the age of 16.. Its too bad this game flopped as far sales but did receieve excellent scores. Sony should just release this on the Wii they need the money anyways..

I think I agree with him in some way. To me, this game is never gonna be at mario level. But you cant compare them. They are different games. Ive played lbp and I didnt like it, not my cup of tea. And to me lbp is more for hardcore players, especially the online and making levels part.
ps: for the record ive played lbp for 1 day only. Time is killing me, trying to play fallout, fable, gears, resistance and lbp. So my opinion is for one day only playtime.

The writer has a point. I have a 360 and a Wii. I was in Gamestop this weekend. My 8YO said, "dad I want that new game with the bag guy.", ??? Oh. You mean Sack Boy. Ya yelled my 8YO and then grabbed the game off the shelf. I told him look at what system the game is for. Truth be told that if the game was available on the Wii or the 360 for that mater then it would be in my collection at home. If Sony was to have a price drop then I would consider LBP more, but I can not justify one $60 game + a $400 system for an 8YO where if it was on a system that was targeted for that age group it would be a no brainer. No fanboyism there.

It has almost absolutely nothing to do with the advertising considering sony has not advertised much period. The ONLY problem I see causing LBP's rise to fame being so slow is the fact that it was released in the middle of MULTIPLE games. At $60 a game it's no wonder it didn't sell good. LBP is a 10/10 hands down the problem is that Resistance 2, Guitar Hero World Tour, Rock Band 2 etc. etc. For those who want all these other games they're going to have to drop a game or two...I know I did, I had to drop LBP & Bioshock for all the game released this month.

When Sony left us high and dry after MGS4 they should have rethought their releasing. We had 2 - 4 months of gameless days in which we could all only play the games we'd already been playing for awhile. And then within 3 weeks they want to push 7 or 8 games down our throats which we don't all have the money for. The only other thing I can think of that stopped me from getting LBP was the delay caused by the Kuran. I would have got it when it released but when given the extra week and the long wait that preceded it, I just had to get something else. What they needed to do was drop a game or two about two - three months ago and LBP would have sold like hot cakes.

Shame it is not selling better. LBP is what Viva Pinata SHOULD of been, only with creatable 3D worlds. Maybe if sony made LPB bundles, or put a demo on PSN or included a playable/video dvd demo (for cost purposes) in with each system, it might improve sales, without increasing cost.

Trouble with your argument is you target one segment for this behaviour but not another. Owning a PS3 and following PS3 threads for the most part i can assure you there are more than a few guaranteed anti-PS3 trolls in each of them - whether it be Gears of War 1/2 folk prowling Resistance 2 review threads (point you to dozens and dozens of such posts right now if you'd like?), or like yourself here anti-LBP folk looking for anything and everything to sling from a pretty clearly silly early-out-the-gate bit of journalism (or threads with anti-Motorstorm folk, or 'x version of such and such looks better than on PS3' folk or... you name it.. The place is generally unpleasant in that way, but it's unpleasant in all directions - hell a quick at look at this thread (not to mention it's very existence) shows a few characters with very few bubbles already stirring where they can.

Frankly on that front if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. Cries that you are 'swamped' and implications that you've been 'driven to acting like a troll by the imbalance of PS3 fanboys' are nonsense.

As for this article.. I love Mario, but much character he ain't got (and i own a Wii, for what it's worth). He's got some distinctions in terms of game mechanics and colour use, and some fun - if a bit generic - settings, but interpersonally is as dead eyed as a statue. LBP wasn't developed as a 'Mario killer' (though what it becomes it's a little bit early to declare given the damn thing's only been out a week). It was a small development houses title funded on the side that got people interested - and created word of mouth amongst the gaming set (whether broader market comes on board, time will tell) - to the point where it's importance to Sony in their current situation was progressively elevated with each showing.

That's the order - a little project that become 'bigger' because of it's continually excellent reception, not something that was designed and expected to be 'huge' and a 'Mario killer' from the outset (unless maybe in the sense that everyone logically would love their games to be massive, of course).

Well apparently this Joker is going by VGchartz's numbers, and even when looking at their data his speculations are way off the mark. The game has only been "officially" out for one week in America and Japan, meaning it sold about 400,000 in that weeks period. European numbers have not been released yet, and the second week for America has not been released yet either.

If I were not a Nintendo loyalist and if the system were more affordable or a I had a larger disposable income, LBP would probably be the game to convince me to buy a PS3.

That said, I don't think Sackboy will ever replace Mario, because we simply don't live in an era where mascots are as essential or prolific as they once were. Even Mario is more a seal of quality than a system seller. Nintendo sells far more systems based on the Wi's control interface than on Mario's face. And while Halo may have had an important impact in establishing the Xbox, Master Chief is unlikely to take up go-karting or basketball in a spin-off title. Meanwhile, Sony had two monumentally successful systems without a major mascot.

As far as this article is concerned, it's a bit too scattershot to be convincing. I would have liked the writer to more clearly state in what way Sony hoped Sackboy would replace Mario before he started declaring that they failed.

After so many years of cherishing Mario, I can safely say that LBP is doing more for gaming now than Mario did back in the day and now particularly, Mario has lost his way (although Galaxy was amazing). Its a shame that this isn't selling better. I've only seen 1 ad on TV and nothing anywhere else, plus the whole delay fiasco confused a lot of people- 2 retailers actually refused to sell it to me on launch day. This is a great user generated game where the tools are comprehensive enough to make just about anyhting, yet easy enough to learn.

Thought it was a very enjoyable game. If I had a family and some children this would be the "GOTO Game!" barnone. I have LBP and R2. Right now i'm working in both. But I have strayed away from the level editor in LBP because the first time I touched it i spend about 5hrs or so until 4am+ getting basics down.

Here in South Africa - with no marketing - LBP sold out. I had to order it online to get a copy (gets delivered tomorrow) - but all the game stores I visited yesterday said it was released on Friday, and sold out on Friday. And there was no in store adverts for it.

I live in Sweden and i got LBP when it realesed in one of the most famous game stores.
When i was going to buy it i saw two piles, one pile of LBP copys and one of gear2. The lbp pile was almost sold out, there were maybe 6-7 copies left and the gears2 pile was almost full. I dont know world wide but in Sweden it has sold alot of copies

You can't always blame soft sales on poor marketing. In the same sense, you can't always attribute high sales on proper marketing. I've never understood where gamers got that. There is a difference between quality and commercial.

A lot of people talk up Shadow of the Colossus, but to me, it was a quality game, just not a comercial style of game so it doesn't have the mass appeal. Take Gran Turismo, for instance, which is probably the system seller for a console that doesn't have one (Tell me another game that AVERAGES 10+ mil sales--Halo hasn't even hit that), this game doesn't get advertised for that much. And it didn't when it first came out, either. It proof that if you make a quality product, and are able to stamp it with that little something that will appeal to the masses, it will sell regardless of ads.

There is something inevitably depressing about the adoption of Sackboy as some kind of mascot. It's the equivalent of finding Mr Bean's ragged, rough, teddy bear cute. Look at the jet black shark-like eyes. Look at the stitching on Sackboy- he looks like one of the little zombies on Conker's Bad Fur Day yet someone far more insidiously sinister. Sackboy seems like the logical conclusion of a generation of gamers who increasingly bought violent games suddenly over-compensating for this by seeking refuge in the utlimate symbol of infantilism- the teddy bear. But even that must look distressed, patchy, unclean like so many war games that have descended upon the Xbox 360 and PS3 like a plague of armour plated locusts.

If I could look past this, I can see that the basic idea of the game seems interesting and potentially great in execution, albeit a kind of evolution of Lemmings and various platform games.

This has to be the greatest game ever to end up a sales flop. I kind of feel sorry for the programmers who worked so hard on this one. Just watching the videos of LBP is enough for me. Looks innovative and has amazing graphics, but I have zero desire to EVER play it. Not even once. Sort of like Home. I realize its not a game, but is anyone actually looking forward to Home?

Sony has sure lost their touch since I used to be a major PS2 supporter. At least they've saved me a lot of money by making it easy to stick with just a 360 for this generation. I'm not buying a PS3 just to play the one good exclusive game (MGS4). Hopefully PS3's will be $150 in 2010 when GoW and GT5 finally release. Unlike all the others in a long string of PS3 disappointments; those two games will probably live up to the hype.

LBP is an amazing game, there is no question about that.

However, Sackboy will never be Mario. If that somehow happens, it won't be in the next 5 years or even 10. Everyone and their mom (literally, for once) knows who Mario is. You can't say the same about either Sackboy or even Master Chief.

Sackboy is awesome, but I just can't see him become the new Mario. Though it would be sweet for him to be PS3's mascot at the least.

I think that this game is great and so do all the people that I have spoken to, that have played it. This does not need to be compared to Mario, it needs to sell on it's own merits, because it is an amazing game. It's a completely different game to current Mario titles and it has a lot more to offer. When you play Little Big Planet it is extremely fun and addictive.

i've been a gamer since i was 6 years old in 1985, when the NES first launched. i instantly fell in love with Mario and a hardcore gamer was born.

however, that was over 20 fricking years ago.

i'm 29 years old now, and the luster of Mario has worn off for me. he just doesn't appeal to me like he did when i was that big eyed, big headed 6 year old.

now this is where Sackboy comes in.

here i am, an adult, with a fiance, bills, rent, and other responsibilities, and Sackboy and Little Big Planet have managed to capture that feeling i got when i was 6 years old staring at the NES and Mario for the first time.

to say Little Big Planet doesn't have a "magic" to it is to say you haven't played the game. it's intrinsically charming, disgustingly so, from it's adorable Sackboy and Sackgirl main character, to the expressions system, to the music, even Stephen Fry, the narrator, is endearing. the game has a quirky charm to it that is all it's own, and there is NOTHING like it on the market. Mario, Sonic, Jak, Daxter, Ratchet, and other platformers that have come before it just don't compare to LBP.

and i'm not talking about gameplay, although LBP is a very unique platform game (there's NO denying how unique the game is), but the feel and tone of the game is so different than other titles in the same genre.

i agree that LBP should be selling more, but you are talking about a game released on a $400 system that is primarily geared towards the 18+ crowd, and it's not even holiday shopping season yet.

i imagine that once the price of the PS3 drops (and i have a feeling it may very well get a price cut before the year is over, even if it's just a $50 cut), and the official holiday shopping season begins, LBP will see a tremendous boost in sales.

right now, there's simply too much competition for a quirk European game like LBP to gain traction. when you had games like Dead Space, Resistance 2, Mirror's Edge, Gears of War 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Fable 2, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and many more geared towards the core PS3 demographic, ALL releasing within days/weeks of LBP, you can understand why people may want to hold off on picking it up.

December is looking to be a rather clear month for game releases. the new Prince of Persia title hits, and WKS hits in Japan, but there's not much else.

many of those gamers that put off getting LBP, or didn't have an interest in it until they played it and got sold on it, will probably pick it up during a slow month. i picked up Little Big Planet, Fable 2, Resistance 2, and Fallout 3 day one, because they were must haves for ME, personally. other people's lists will vary.

however, i DO plan on catching up on the many other games i passed on to get those four later this month, and throughout December(ie, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Valkyria Chronicles, Far Cry 2, and then Prince of Persia).

i don't understand why people count a game out if it's not a million seller during it's first month.

games like Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction didn't sell 1 million units during it's launch month, but to date, a good year later, it's sold OVER 1 million units, and counting, as more people purchase PS3's and pick up those early gems like R&C, Uncharted, and Warhawk.

this "article" reeked of the typical Nintendo fanboy pride and arrogance, and "well, Nintendo would have done it BETTER" elitist mentality that often gets displayed when a game out there NOT from Nintendo dares to outclass it in the "innovation" factor. Little Big Planet IS revolutionary, and hopefully it will stir more developers out of their "trend of the day/month/year" mentality they've fallen into as of late. for that reason alone, i hope LBP catches on.

it's a shame that when EA legitimately IMPROVES it's software outing, those games don't sell as well. where's the story about Dead Space not selling up to par, and how it doesn't bode well for Mirror's Edge, or EA continuing to support unique, quality, original offerings like those in the future because the average gamer would much rather have the new Madden? why write that story, when it's still so much fun to take pot shots at Sony? /sarcasm.

the finger shouldn't be pointed at Little Big Planet for not being a Halo, or Gears of War, or Call of Duty. the finger should be pointed at the gaming populace that would much rather buy Kane and Lynch (it sold OVER 1 million copies! I am with you on this... I have been a games player since 1984 days of the Amstrad CPC / Spectrum / C64 and without a doubt this is the most original game I have played in years. Yes it is a platformer and yes it has many games that play like it, but to collect everything in the game takes so long and skill and that is where LBP shows us what has been missing since Mario went 3D, it actually has lives and when they run out, back to the beginning.

Sony never intended it to be Mario or emulate Mario, they made this to be more than Mario and with the create your own levels and an easy interface to make them? Honestly I think it will be a long time before something comes along to make platform games, if not gaming fun again.

Sony's mistake wasn't how they handled LBP but in not making the entire playstation universe revolve around Sackboy. Unlike the insipid over-realistic avatars of Playstation Home sackboys can be true expressions of Playstation gamers around the world from cute to badass.

The mistake Nintendo made was make the Mii's so dull. As a result they provide limited excitement to the customer.

LBP looks cool. i like platformers too. unfortunately i don't own a ps3, way too expensive, although i have a wii. if i were to get another game system, it would be the ps3.

i remember when killzone was made out to be the halo killer. i doubt this game will be a mario killer, i doubt anything will be a mario killer. mario's games are always solid(main games). i haven't picked up SMG though, but heard it's the best mario game.it's also the x-mas season, so theres a lot of new games being released now,(except for the wii ;_;) so wait til after the season is over, but if i had a ps3, i would pick this one up.

as for advertising, i see LBP all the time on tv, don't know what all this talk is about over lack of advertising...

The only ppl claiming this was gonna be a stand-in for Mario were PS3 fanboys living in fantasy land. There shouldn't even be a comparison as the two games are nothing alike. Sackboy is more than capable of being a mario-type figure.

The thing is though, that it might have a little bit of trouble because sackboy is a jack of all trades and master of none; unlike mario who is known for a singular type of game with certain, expected level design types.

If Media Molecule (and furthermore, Sony) can identify Sackboy with one particular thing instead of making him seem so multi-faceted, then people can latch onto that.

Until then, Sackboy will most likely only remain in the hearts of PlayStation owners who have had the pleasure of experiencing LBP.
