IGN: Fallout 3 PS3 Review

IGN writes: "Fallout 3 is a special videogame. It's an open-world role-playing game that delivers an experience unlike anything on the market right now. It's a gripping and expansive showcase of how much depth and excitement can be packed into one videogame, and it does justice to the Fallout franchise. This sequel is the first made by Bethesda, the developers responsible for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. You don't need to play any of their past games or any previous Fallout games to enjoy this one. It stands on its own as a memorable and well-crafted videogame.

The Fallout universe paints a picture of a dystopian future. It exists in what people on the cusp of the atomic revolution in the 1950s saw as the sci-fi world of tomorrow…if several thousand nuclear bombs were dropped on it. It's a quaint sci-fi view of a future filled with atomic cars, robot servants, and incredibly basic computer terminals. A nuclear war has taken away most of these technological comforts, providing the backdrop for a game with a dreary, desperate atmosphere filled with glib and dark humor. It's a world that is both fantastic and somehow believable. And it is one that's exciting to explore."

Considering Sony went the stupid route and thought it wasn't needed, in which they went and contradicted themselves by releasing it a YEAR after the PS3 was released. LOL, nice fail sony.

GiantEnemyLobster5676d ago

You like to play with Boy's Sacks? sackboys? Queer

Mr Fancy Pants5676d ago

sony didn't contradicted themselves they listened to their fans... we wanted DS3 and the DS3 came. as simple as that.

but what about all those xbox without HDMI, HDD and the RRoD?

no answer?

"8.5 Presentation
The atmosphere and style are everything you could ask for and more. The PS3 version has shown us substantially more bugs than what you get on PC and 360."

Plus Exclusive Downloadable content. I believe there's no dilema here.

Xbox 360 and PC got 9.0 in this deparment by the way.

I suggest you read this

Sony settled with immersion, in came the dual shock 3. Stop filling yourself with fairies and wizards on this supposed Sony good will. They are a publicly traded company and don't give a crap about you, just like MS.

The Killer5676d ago

wrong!! they do give a sh t about ps3 fans, and even if they didnt then at least they r doing it far more better than MS(RROD,disk scratching,no HDMI,no HDD,no wifi, repairing takes for some cases many weeks, they replace ur broken 360 with another fixed broken 360)

Yoma5675d ago

Yes, Sony do listen to the consumers, more than MS and Nintendo does. Not just themself have said, but other news sites too.

I know which version im getting....
....definitely not the version without cross game invites, thats for sure.

:)

chanto235676d ago (Edited 5676d ago )

but not for the reasons you would like...both games look exactly the same as opposed to what PSM was saying...the reason the PS3 scored lower wasn't because framerate issues or bad graphics but because of a glitch that when you get friend messages the game becomes blurry. So play offline and tadaaaaa!!! its the same as 360

But i know that .2 will make your day...sadly...but true

EDIT: Whoever disagreed is because he can't read...

PirateThom5676d ago

Wait... the game has online? :-/

I didn't know that.

Like Fable 2, a game I won't be playing online.

poopsack5676d ago

KZ2 published by sony on 360, confirmed by breakfast!

lol

Aclay5676d ago (Edited 5676d ago )

@ Breakfast,

MGS4 and KZ2 aren't even possible on the Xbox 360 in the state they are in right now on the Playstation 3. Killzone 2 will be using 4 and a half cores in the PS3 as stated by Guerrilla, does the Xbox 360 even have 4 cores... nope. Try again, keep dreaming and keep on spinning.

If MGS4 does come to the 360 (highly doubt it will) it will definantly be the inferior version that's for sure.

Guerrilla is 1st party Sony developer Breakfast and Killzone 2 will never come to the 360! Oh my God, Breakfast just owned himself with that dumb comment.

Anyways, If you want MGS4 and Killzone 2 that bad just buy a PS3.

360 gamers don't have to worry one bit about multiplats, even with burnout paradise and dead space being ps3 lead the 360's never ended up with a slightly defected game.

i wasn't even expecting to see this, i just got back from a hard days work, this news came to me all natural.

Pika-pie5676d ago

Im sure they will patch that PS3 issue. I dont think it was fair to mark down the PS3 version because of that.

Anyway I really dont know which version to buy. I think il buy both, see which one plays best for me & flog one version on ebay once decided :)

TheUsedVersion5676d ago

I've been meaning to say this for a long time....

What happened to you?

You've always been a fan of the 360 but you were never biased. However, now you and your sad attempts at getting attention are just pathetic. Its really sad.

I hope you are permanently relegated to the Open Zone. I for one could do without your drivel.

it must get lonely in his mothers basements, breakfast has to keep himself busy somehow.

hwg, it is well known the ps3 is a more powerful machine.

HWG5675d ago

I find your blind dedication to some dogmatic false facts rather disturbing. The numbers disagree with you.

kevin11125675d ago (Edited 5675d ago )

let me guess, you pulled those numbers off of 360.ign lol. the ones where no one can understand how they came to those numbers. and the fact that tons of developers including john carmack disagree. we all know if you build a game specifically for the ps3 is can do more than the 360, i thought even the fanboys got this already.

y0haN5675d ago

you guys got trolled by the lowest common denominator... breakfast

:)

MetalProxy5675d ago (Edited 5675d ago )

@HWG can you point out one game that uses all "pipelines"?...thoug ht so. Your just assuming that the developers do use everything to the max. And who said it runs smoothy also? You didnt even provide a link neither. I can go on on and but its pointless.
:)

Dareaver15675d ago

finally someone with some common sense...

But i hope you do realize that the same applies to the PS3.

The specs they feed the fanboys are all at max in a very controlled environment, both consoles are not capable of attaining those spec numbers in a real world environment.

Both fans and fanboys of both sides need to understand that.

But there is something to be said, the architecture of one relies heavily on a more Synergistic approach, versus the other. And developers have stated that too.

power of Green 5675d ago (Edited 5675d ago )

The 360 is more powerful and has been proven too many times.

Farcry 2(make sure you enlarge the pics with the icon on the botton right of the pic that will show up)

http://img355.imageshack.us...

I'm sure they held back the 360 version so that the PS3 version wouldn't lagg behind.

PS3 version not as sharp and has missing objects with inferior textures and contrast.

y0haN5675d ago

It's funny you should mention that Power of Green, because if in Far Cry 2 you find a really good weapon that is, for example, unreliable as hell and will only work for a short while but is slightly more powerful than your current weapon, do you swap it, or do you keep the nice, shiny weapon that won't break and will see you through to the end of the game..?

Antan5675d ago

"I'm sure they held back the 360 version so that the PS3 version wouldn't lagg behind"

So i assume by your logic they held back the PC version also? which of course they didn`t as the PC version is far and away above what either console is achieving. POG, you know absolutely nothing about multi platform game development so its best if you just stop spreading your "held back" nonsense because you look foolish each and everytime. Get a job in the industry and you will learn things. But what do i know, i mean i only work in the industry.....oh wait!

Ju5675d ago (Edited 5675d ago )

@HWG R2 strongly disagrees with your opinion.

@POG, yeah right, FarCry2. Sure. Especially in the second shot (well, can't help it, but the 360 version is always, sunny, huh? Where are the clouds ).

But, well, I could post this:

or this:

HWG5675d ago

Please tell me where I said PS3 was not a capable machine? Where did I say it was not capable of producing beautiful environments? I'm simply clarifying the 360 has the more capable hardware. It is entirely up to developers to make use of what they have.

Ju5675d ago

I disagree with you because pulling specs alone is only half of the picture. But this has been discussed up and down, so I won't go there again, and again and again and again....

Yoma5675d ago

You are always beeing sarcastic, but peoples just dont get it :D

Xiru5675d ago (Edited 5675d ago )

HWG, you sure went to a lot of trouble for nothing. 360 has the better GPU, PS3 is superior in overall power. Take this quote from John Carmack. "So says John Carmack, the legendary programmer of the Doom and Quake series, in an intriguing interview with Buzzscope. Though Carmack expresses a "preference" for the Xbox 360's CPU design, he admits that the PS3 "will have a bit more peak power."

Care to argue with John Carmack?

I'll clarify a bit better. The 360 has more ram and is preferred for development because it is easier to program for. It also has slightly faster gpu. The PS3 has a more powerful CPU, less ram and slightly less powerful gpu. In order to make the PS3 perform better than the 360, you have to program around the limitations of the ram and gpu and put more emphasis on the cpu. This is why multiplatform games are inferior on the PS3. Developers struggle with this because its difficult and costly. It is not always because they are lazy. My main point is that when a game is made with the PS3 as the main focus, it is possible to produce something superior than what the same game would be on the 360. But since most games are multiplatform now, we really won't be seeing much evidence of this.

KARMA20095675d ago

Keep dreaming,KILLZONE2 would explode the cpu of the 360...RROD EXPLODSION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KARMA20095675d ago

Isaac5675d ago (Edited 5675d ago )

"DISAGREE WITH NUMBERS LOL!!!" I don't disagree with numbers, I disagree with your ass (or IGN's ass or Xbox.com's ass or whatever ass you took them from).

Did you take those numbers out of your ass? Obviously Xbox fanboys or ignorants (you choose) will not talk about PS3's strength's over 360 in terms of hardware. For example, the Cell processor was made with graphics in mind, unlike Xbox 360's processor which will never be used for graphics as it's not worth the effort. The Cell processor has outperformed in some graphics processing tests the most advanced GPUs, like for example it outperformed the nVidia 8800 GT by taking only a fifth of time to process the same graphics related task. That's 5 times more powerful than one of the best cards in the market. The 9800 and the 280 aren't that much more powerful than the 8800, considering nVidia didn't raise the bar much, they basically added support for Physics. Anyway, just to compare that with the 360 GPU, the 8800 GT has more than 100 unified shaders, each of which runs faster than 360's 48 unified shaders. Basically, the 360's GPU pales in comparison to the cell processor.

Another strength in the PS3 is the XDR Ram. It's a lot faster than 360's RAM and it generates less bottlenecks between the CPU and memory unlike 360's architecture. This lets the cell processor work as fast as its memory (in terms of clock speed) unlike the 360 CPU, but hell that hasn't mattered much since developers are only focused in one PPC core and using the GPU (that's why PS3 ports look so sh1tty since they rarely use SPUs on PS3, and they use a single core on 360 since that's what they're used to... not like it would make much difference if they used more cores since most 3rd party games are usually oriented in next-gen graphics and last-gen gameplay).

Another strength that the PS3 has over the 360 is also found on the GPUs. While unified shader architecture allows each shader processor to perform any kind of graphical task, that makes each shader processor take a performance hit; which is why nVidia chose the RSX, a better version of the 7800 (perhaps directly comparable with the 7900), since it delivers more power per shader processor.

Now, why does everyone say the 360 GPU is better? Well, if PS3 and 360 were PCs, then I have no doubt that 360 would outperform the PS3 if only the GPU mattered. Why? Because PC games have to be developed for architectures as flexible as possible, not for high power fixed on certain types of calculations. However, consoles are made to be taken advantage off, which is why nVidia chose the RSX, since it has higher theoretical computational power than a unified architecture and it's cheaper to deliver (for the time when it was delivered). That's why the RSX was consistently shown to perform better *on paper*. The problem is that to make the RSX perform as good as it does on paper it has to be in a very controlled environment, unlike 360's GPU which is very flexible, like its unified RAM.

HWG can believe whatever he wants, but don't let his numbers impress you. There are countless of tests that can show either side (the PS3 side or the 360 side) to be the "better" machine. I could take my time to show you all the tests, but that's really as pointless as HWG's verborrhea. What really matters, is real world performance, and the proof is in the pudding, and there has yet to be any 360 exclusive showing graphics, physics, amount of enemies or simulations, among other things as good as those found on PS3 exclusives.

If the 360 was truly as powerful as Xbox fanboys want to believe, then it would be impossible for the PS3 to have shown visuals much better than multiplatform games or exclusive 360 games, especially when you consider that you can squeeze Xbox 360's power very easily. That's why multiplatforms are looking better on 360 as of late, since consoles are being treated as PCs, and how can you blame developers anyway? They are not all noobs, they are simply all about the money, time and resources. If they can make a good game fast on 360 and then a half-decent port on PS3, they'll do it if it gives them more profit. They have a single RAM pool that doesn't require you to optimize the amount of information you allocate for the CPU and GPU and a graphics processor that doesn't require for you to optimize the amount of vertex and pixel shaders that you require it to process, versus a machine that requires tons and tons of optimizations, especially one whose processor requires TWENTY TIMES MORE CODING (literally, as scientists have shown) to make it perform that much better.

(There was a test done at, I don't remember if it was MIT, Stanford, or Princeton, but the point is, a computer science Ph. D. optimized an algorithm to run in the cell processor; it actually ran 32 times faster but... instead of being the 20 lines of code the original required, it was about 400 lines of code; that's gotta be 20 times more expensive, and in game development, that's a lot of money that you're never gonna see spent just to make a multiplatform game exploit the PS3's strengths)

I didn't even need to put the Hard Drive or Blu-ray into the equation.

Conclusion: PS3's strength's are hard to exploit, and will only be seen by the differences between exclusive games. And while exclusive games are hard to compare... there should be exclusive games on 360 that are truly more revolutionary in different ways (technologically speaking) than PS3 exclusives, and there aren't any. I mean seriously, even with PS3's supposed "weaknesses", Uncharted has more than twice the polygons per character than Gears of War, it has more color and more detailed textures, even when it's hard to code for.

There's nothing as stunning as killzone on 360. No game with the scope of resistance. No game with the level of detail. Now, where are the games, "HWG"? Is Gears the best 360 can do? Because as detailed as it is, it's basically small corridors with few enemies. Alan Wake looks nice but not as nice as the games I mentioned, and we've only seen the PC version anyway. Everything else is not a technological masterpiece. Ninja Gaiden 2 and Halo 3 might be good games but technologically speaking we've seen better things on PS3 exclusives. It's time to walk the walk and do less talk. HWG is coming out as simply an attention whore, a fanboy, an ignorant, or anything BUT a sapient computer whiz.

The XBOT5675d ago

This generations console wars will not be decided with "which console is more powerful", they are both great consoles delivering great performances. This generation will be decided with library. Sony has more studios, MS is buying more library for their console. They both have great strategies. So far the 360 has this:

* more wins in Multiplatform games which makes the biggest library shares.
* Very good exclusives (Less than that of PS3s)
* Great Online Gaming Exprience
* Good Price
* Possible Shorter Life

The ps3 has this:

*more wins with exclusive games, that is with both internal and the diminishing number of third party exclusives.
*Blue Ray (not every gamer is interested, but allot are)
* Good Online Experience
* Possible Longer Life

Reasons for owning two consoles this generation are less than previous ones. If I had a choice, I would own both consoles, but not all gamers can. In this generation, their will be no winners and no losers. The Xbox 360 are and the PS3 will have allot of games for us to play wether it is exclusive or not.

What will be interesting is the next generation. Microsoft will probably go with a higher end pc-like console while still supporting the big install base of its 360 to slowly gain mileage on the comming generation. Something equivalent to 2 gtx 280s or 2 ati 4870's with a 8 core architecture or something. The PS3 would be stronger, with an awesome library and the development teams would have mastered its architecture producing great games and a massive install base that is hard to ignore and will surprise gamers with its new console. I have no idea what PS3 will base on their next design on.

SL1M DADDY5676d ago

You're being sarcastic, right? Just asking 'cause it seems kind of silly to miss out on a great game just for some silly trophies that amount to nothing.

Great score for a great game. Will be picking this one up tonight.

Cenobia5675d ago (Edited 5675d ago )

I actually agree. I want trophies on my first play through. I don't know why, but I love the trophy system.

That's not my only reason for waiting though. There are too many other games coming out at the same time, and I don't have the money for them all. Also, I hate this exclusive DLC bullsh!t, and don't really feel like supporting companies that go down that road. I'll definitley pick it up eventually, but I'd like to see more support for the PS3 version (beyond just porting it).

Also, the glitches on the PS3 version need to be ironed out before I even consider it. Hopefully the patch doesn't take more than a couple of weeks (although the trend for this sort of thing seems to be months).

Looks like the majority of gamers who own both consoles will get the 360 version.

PS3-only owners are kind of sad because Bethesda ain't giving us trophies and DLC.

But it's all good. The game looks awesome. Definitely a GotY contender.

It will sell good on both consoles.

theEnemy5676d ago

Will you STFU ?

You're the "pp" of PS3-Fanboys.

You're an embarrassment to all PS3 owners.

Fallout 3 is obviously better on 360 due to it's exclusive DLC, lead-platform, the PS3 version without having trophies, and this "bugs".

(This is coming from a PS3/PC only owner)

robotnik5676d ago

If I get this game someday, it will be for the PS3.

Vertius5676d ago

Of course the PS3 version is getting DLC. The exclusive Microsoft content would be your Horse Armour/Wizard's Tower/one or two Knights of the Nine-style downloads...but the inevitable expansion pack will be on PS3 too.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6917d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker17d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6917d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt17d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken17d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

"You can get all Fallout games in a bundle at a significant 20% discount on Steam. Individually, all these games add up to $244.91. With the discount, you can get them all for $195.91. That is $49 less than the original price. Quite a significant discount for such a popular franchise."

😊 😂 🤣 😐 - But why?

Just wait for a sale and get most if not all of it for a fraction of that price.

20% off...lol

The games were just on a real sale over the last week or two for the show promotion. Fallout 4 was $10, 3 was $5, NV was cheap as heck too.

So what the heck is this

The original games have been given out for free by Amazon for GOG and Epic, 76 is free now on Amazon if you have prime, Epic has also given out new Vegas for free and 4 has gone down to pretty cheap prices. 194 bucks is a total ripoff when you can get these games individually for less. Don't forget cd keys might sell em for a dollar less at times too. Come on man, us cheapskates won't touch anything near or above 100 lolz
