These are the types of stories I like seeing. The ones about video games.

It's not bad. However I like the idea of if you become infeted you can play as a zombie or start over not respawn at current time. Basically because...A. Playing as a zombie would be tight and B.Say you fixed these peoples home now they dont need help so you are out one safe house... Less rep and so forth... Imagine you got to the very end and you had a huge amount of zombies. Say 300 in an area to kill. Without being able to radio friends or go to the weapon shop it would be as tedious as "Kill2 die, Respawn, kill 3 die, Respawn" ... And so forth.

I love zombie ideas but the thing is. Unless the government stepped in and sealed off the area there would be endless zombie hordes looking for fresh meat. How many cities do you know of that have no suburbs around them? and other cities near those and more suburbs past that...

I agree though nice insight. We need more of this on N4G.

Fallout 3 sounds pretty close to this idea. Not completely, since there are other elements besides mutants (who look pretty similar to zombies).

Dead Rising 2 is a Wii Exclsuive..which is odd in my view..don't know why but just is.

Not the best console choice for an a exclusive..but hey the Wii needs more exclusives besides shovel-ware or Mario fail spin-off games.

Which I'm happy to see if the console picks up...kind of getting tired of only seeing Sony and Microsoft Duke it out...getting a bit retro now.

The free roaming world with zombies? This guy has put some thought into how it would work... But i have never been overly impressed with zombie games. Dead rising was silly and a waste of time... Resident evils are not sand box like this guy wants.. but the entire idea behind zombies has been beat into the ground.

I remeber it was slated for next gen.. but kinda fell off the map...

It was the Open world game play this guy wants.... But U were the Zombie.... U progressed in the game by turning hte people in the city into zombies... it had different class's of zombie some fast but weak.. slow but strong... it was intresting sounding.. almsot a mix of Zombie GTA... but the way ur zombie horde grows it was a lil RTS as well.

The best part of the games ideas was the multi player... One side is soldiers hunting zombie king... but u have to watch the soldiers cuz if ur team mates get bit , scatrched... they turn on you... I always wanted that thrill of watching For attacking zombies but always being ready to put down my friend when the time came. LOL

So Some one Get them to finish Possessed! Best Zombie game ever! if ever...

sounds alot like I Am Legend, which isn't a bad thing.

In that movie everyone was a zombie and there where only a couple normal people. The zombies where fast and agile and that's how zombies should be. it's scarier to have something 3x as fast and twice as strong rushing at you, than something slow. An open world zombie game would be a great idea if done right.

Resident Evil 1 for the PS1 was absolutely ground breaking though, and even with the insanely bad acting, I don't think will ever be topped for me personally...at least in terms of a zombie game...I understand this is more about a sandbox action than a survival horror game...I'm just point out that I have never really enjoyed a zombie game since then (and RE2)...I am one of the 6 people on this planet that didn't care for RE4...but that was mostly because of the name the game had, as in...It was so radically different from the previous titles it annoyed me more than anything...it was a great action game...but wasn't a RE imo...and I fear RE5 may share the same fate for me...

but anyway...Left 4 Dead will be the closest thing to what is being mentioned in this article I would bet...at least anytime in the near future...its not exactly open world, and there is no 'set number of zombies'...but there are different types of zombies...your buddies can get infected right in front of you...and the zombies are extremely fast (at least some of them)...

L4D looks great so far imo, at least gameplay wise...I'm just pissed its Source again...you can say graphics aren't everything, but I am honestly quite tired of everything they've created for the past 4 years looking exactly like the original HL 2...this is HL 2...at night...the entire time...not impressive...

Does anyone remeber Dead Rush! That was basically what he described but on the ps2 and xbox. Treyarch was making it and then got cancelled, it was supposed to release in 04, It looked awesome, it was free roam, You could take parts off cars and put them one other cars to have reenforment, and alot more, look it up definently if you read this comment, go to google they got some videos. There is this one game, Possession, where you can control a horde of zombies, sort of like a RTS, and you kill different types of humans like cops, military, and special ops and you control different types of zombies and you gotta take over the entire city. There's also a multiplayer component to it similar to the one in this article. Unfortunately, the developers don't have a publisher so who knows when it'll come out =(

depends on which zombie movie your basing your ideas on. true zombie fans stick w/ the Romero view of zombies. slow, mindless eating machines that don't feel pain, don't need to sleep and never stop coming for you. and like all GOOD zombie movies the cause of the zombies is never explained. the cause of the zombies is not important, in GOOD zombie movies the zombies are just a backdrop for the human drama that is being played out.

in just about all zombie movies, zombifacation(?) is spread through the bite of a zombie. however some movies(including the original Dawn of the Dead)and the comic The Walking Dead explore the idea that everyone carries the zombie virus but the virus only takes effect after you have died. and that the zombie bite kills you due to horrible infections caused by all the bacteria living in their rotting flesh.

I think it's wrong to sat that developers are afraid to make a game like this. It's like saying they're afraid to make the most awesome game ever: a First-person point-and-click adventure based off of Tom Sawyer. Not that the idea is necessarily bad, it's just that sometimes what people think will be a great idea turns out to not be much fun. Also, I think the push to have multiplayer components hurt game design. If a game is done well enough, it doesn't need multiplayer; just look at Bioshock or MGS4. MGO doesn't count as it could very well be a stand alone product.

It's just that the hassle of programming ten thousand zombies and register each one as a different character in the world. I mean seriously, that's not a single zombie multiplied by 10,000, that's 10,000 unique characters. That's retarded.

I don't think it matters if they "re-spawn" or not. What matters is making the game fun and the storyline compelling. I actually like an explanation for zombies, especially if it's a "virus". Zombies out of nowhere is just ridiculous. We want to move games forward in terms of entertainment AND art, not just make them "simple fun" like Wii games.

I would like to see an open world Zombie game where you do have to accomplish a few missions, but a story for each of the 1000 survivors... ridiculous. Let it be like lost, that way you can actually focus on the very few survivors instead of having to register so many survivors.

I get your point and it's interesting but the difference in fun and entertainment wouldn't be that much between 10,000 "fixed" zombies and infinitely respawning zombies, 1000 survivors or just 20. If you kill the 10,000 the fun ends anyway. What they should do is use procedural synthesis to make all zombies different while keeping game code as short as possible. GTA meets Dawn of the Dead, except on a big ass city not a shopping mall.

Where are the games with procedurally generated content anyway? I remember Sony and Microsoft boasting about it with "4D games" and how the 360 is supposedly made for that, but I think only Borderlands is being developed with that technique and it's a multiplatform game.

4D is the aging of the entire world in real time. Wood rotting, dirt accumulating, pipes getting worn out, etc. As of right now, only a select few computers can do that. Well, that and the PS3. Just barely though. The 360 was not capable of running 4D in real time, and it is not coming from me. It was a study done between the three platforms. Either way, I doubt we will ever see anything like that other than from Sony's first parties. Third parties wouldn't both with making the tech.

Sony wasn't talking sh*t when they said 4D on PS3.

my main man good job.....i always thought of something similar to this but in my vision it would always take place from a single survivors point of view and in my vision he would be in new york actually in manhattan and he is trying to get to brooklyn to save his family...think skyscrapers and being in a office building on the 50th floor and having to make it outside to a specific vehicle and since you start in the skyscraoer you actually have a good feild of depth as to how many are roaming the streets in your immediate(and not so immediate) vacinity...what do you think about it?

I would love some sort of open world game filled with zombies. In fact, it would probably be one of the open world games I could get excited about. Saints Row 2 looks fun, but I had my fill with Grand Theft Auto 4. It just didn't appeal to me very much, but the idea of being in the middle of one of those massive scale zombie invasions would be fun. I would play zombie sniper high atop a building. theres a halflife 2 multiplayer mod that you play as zombies vs surivivors, if you get killed by a zombie, you become one, if you kill all zombies you win.

I had a idea like this a month ago the way i would have done the games is you play as a man who has been created to never die never get hurt and lives to do crazy things he is a stunt man .then the people who created him think there first creation was good so they do it again but this time they mess up. making a whole city full of zombies. the army cant beat them so they send in the stunt man to kill the zombies and search for surviers yes like the guy who made this blog stated as you find people you get more mission. get food for survivors transport surviors to new safe house. the way you lose or game over is you get infected if your meter reaches 100% infected you lose. to heal your self the army gives you a sarum that are found all over the cites. and your a stunt man what dose that mean you can do stunts in the game plant a bomb in a car ride it in to a group of zombies you well live. the weaponds well be given to you by army and survivors.any thing i missed oh and it well play like GTA open wolrd.how dose that sound

... but to answer your question, theres a very simple answer: money. A game like this would apeal to the true hardcore gamer, but many games have tanked before becasue all they were concerned with were the hardcore. The fact is that the "aliens" and "giant fish" are there to expand interest, and if the game was really that intense with the fuel conservation, and turning into a zombie and strait up loosing... I would love game like this but many more casual gamers would find thi inaccesable, the fact is this idea has been made already, but with all the alterations neccissary for it to be a high-selling game: dead rising. We will never see a game which fits into your vision because games need huge sales numbers.

This game has been thought of before. Alot. Hell hideo kojima said if he ever made a zombie game that this is what it owuld be like (although a bit more mmo...)

But the sad truth is the technology hasnt caught up with the idea yet. Its doable on todays consoles and pc's, but not to the extent of detail this guys talking about. But we are VERY close to it :D And when the technology is around, I really hope they do make a game like this.

Kudos for writing it down, but your "concept" lacks several major issues. Ability to be developed, a certain entertainment curve depth, story and the reason to finish the game. Right now its just a game with zombies wich has been thought of 10.000 times before and noone made it because noone wants to play it longer then 20 minutes.

Just Cause with Zombies lol,populated Island ,hidden secret lab (top of a mountain or hidden valley), outbreak civilians get infected,your up against riots, looters,packs of dogs, security etc. You or a team have to find soneone or something blah blah. good ideas, really reminds me of "the zombie survival guide" by max brooks, a very entertaining and interesting read. if they do make the game, i definitely think they should use that book as their bible.

i disagree with the limited number of zombies. if you read the book, in a zombie apocalypse, there will NOT be an feasible end to the zombies. perhaps limited the number of zombies in a certain area would make more sense.

however i do like many of the ideas, i think making it a partial sneaking game would also add to many elements of gameplay; having to sneak through a desolate city with zombies roaming around would be intense. or say, lighting a car on fire to draw their attention so you can sneak by.

man id love to have a discussion about the ideas that could go into this game, such a good idea!

Every gamer have thought about this concept at least once in their lives, because it's the OBVIOUS best game ever to make. I remember when I was 8-9 years old I spent hours drawing concept art for my zombie game (ennemies, weapons, city maps, locations) and making huge lists of all the details in the game (weapon attack power, magazine size, ennemy health, etc).

Every gamer I ever met said they've also thought about it. A sandbox-like zombie game, with massive hordes, vehicles, barricades, online survival mode, etc. The only thing that differs is that most people say that the zombification online would let you control a stronger/faster zombie to attack your ex-teamates

Why no one has done it already is simply beyond me.
