What if Wolfenstein 2 Doesn’t Sell?

Bethesda’s latest game is under a lot of pressure.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is a very good game. There are just enough weapons, there is plenty of replay value, you can play it however you’d like without punishment and there is next to nothing on it or in it that feels tacked on or extraneous.

And that puts it in an awkward position after EA shuttered Visceral Games.

Littil_Devil2401d ago

In that case, then it's bye bye for the said devs, because EA will sort them out for sure.

DoomeDx2400d ago

...You know the developers of Wolfenstein aren't owned by EA right? They are owned by Bethesda

opinionated2400d ago (Edited 2400d ago )

Which is why none of this makes any sense. Bethesda’s standards are completely different. Wolfenstein’s success (or failure) has nothing to do with visceral. The evil within 1 wasn’t some blockbuster hit that would meet EAs unrealistic sales standards yet it still got a sequel. It sold 125k at launch. Bethesda makes single player games, it’s what they do.

Ben Kuchera “the game industry veteran journalist” what a joke.

prankster1012400d ago

Bethesda are pretty much my favourite publisher at this point... Hope the game sells enough to result in a part 3. I know I bought my copy... Day One.

Dark_Knightmare22400d ago

Ea might have some power in the gaming industry but their not powerful enough to close down a studio owned by Bethseda

shammgod2400d ago

Quite possibly one of the most puzzling responses I have ever seen on N4G.

datriax2400d ago

Ouch. Google must have been down for a bit when you made this comment.

deadwiseman852400d ago

I thought this comments was funny. I'm pretty sure that you were being sarcastic, and it went straight above people's head!

Michiel19892400d ago

U know it wasn't. It's just someone who goes on the hatetrain without any knowledge.

Michiel19892400d ago

The hate is strong with this one!

It will be a real shame if gamers don't support this game, it really is as good as they reviews are suggesting.

Ultimately, if it fails to sell well it will be on the publishers, they decided on this suicidal release date. The devs upheld there end of the deal, the made a fantastic title that has receive critical acclaim.

Xb1ps42400d ago (Edited 2400d ago )

I will buy this game but I have to buy evil within 2 first, I just love horror.. with that said, what I would like to know is do I have to be a day one buyer or even a first month buyer to add to the sales for the game to be considered a success so the devs can proceed ASAP on the next installment?

The other problem I have is that I have to buy another external drive to buy more games. I’m all digital, I’m against trade ins, but that’s more out my pocket.. I have to spend another $60 for a hard drive to keep buying, it costs me a lot of money to keep up just like the devs and pubs! While I know gaming has never been cheap, I have been gaming since Atari but someone really needs to tackle this save space needed for these games that get bigger and bigger, hell I can barely keep up with these damn constant updates!

yeahokwhatever2400d ago

the first 20 minutes of W2 is scarier than most horror games I've played. It's shocking to say the least.

wonderfulmonkeyman2400d ago

Ditto, assuming I can afford it day-of.XD

Sirk7x2400d ago

I was thinking the same. Wait on it, then buy it for Switch to support it.

NXFather2400d ago

I am starting to see too many they typos.

OpenGL2400d ago

Why are all the game "journalists" acting like this game's success or failure will decide if we get single player games in the future? Gamers don't need to get fucked in the ass for the industry to be profitable, it was profitable long before this loot crate shit started and it'll be profitable when it's gone. If Bethesda or any other publisher decides the economics just don't make sense for single player games anymore, I'll spend my money elsewhere.

Xb1ps42400d ago (Edited 2400d ago )

In all honest, and I’m an Xbox supporter, I think this will be a topic because of what ms said recently about single player games..

I want to support each and every good single player games, I prefer single player over multi, but why do they feel like I only want to buy games In the later half of the year?! Why try and go against the call of duty’s?! Why think that I only game around the holiday season?

FreddyFazbear2400d ago

I respect Xbox fans such as yourself for reasonable comments such as this. Unlike some of your brethren fans will not take any negative comments towards MS and Xbox. If there is a good time to unite for all fans of Sony nintendo MS and PC gamers it is now against the Tyrannical Future that is Microtransactions, loot boxes and MP only games which all these big publishers want

MWH2400d ago

@Freddy
"If there is a good time to unite for all fans of Sony nintendo MS and PC gamers it is now against the Tyrannical Future that is Microtransactions, loot boxes and MP only games which all these big publishers want"

All gamers should seriously consider this to protect and preserve this beloved hobby.

Michiel19892400d ago

@freddy It's like this for fanbases of every console, normally it would be good for xbox to have a new exclusive, but not being able to take criticism of your preferred platform is NOT xbox exclusive.

OpenGL2399d ago

I agree about the release schedule as well, unless you own every platform you will frequently experience game droughts and then in the fall they release too many games at once. Most people don't buy multiple full priced games the same week. (I do)

343_Guilty_Spark2400d ago

Dev teams are significantly larger, have more payroll, development takes significantly longer but the gamer wants more while paying the same. You need balance.

bloop2399d ago

But we're not paying the same. Game prices have gone up with every new generation. It's about €70 for a game now. Last gen average price was around €60 and before that it was €45-€50. They've been steadily increasing prices over the years to accommodate rising costs in development.

Elda2400d ago (Edited 2400d ago )

There are Wolfenstein fans worldwide when it's said & done it'll do well. I'm enjoying it so far.

Riders republic. Nice. I never bought it but played beta twice. Good fun openworld game.

BigBosss409d ago

I have 3 other mates who like playing multiplayer games. Is this something we will all enjoy together?

Astrokis409d ago

It’s a really fun game when there’s a lot of people on but the player base dropped a lot compared to launch. This should help increase the amount online drastically.

It’s definitely a - I want to chill with my friends type of game so definitely check it out! Also it’s a huge improvement over Steep

MaximusPrime_409d ago

Sounds good. Also, Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC coming a day after. I'll be more likely spending time on that DLC first. But will join when free.

closed_account408d ago (Edited 408d ago )

Riders Republic is a ton of fun and one of the best things Ubisoft has done in recent years IMO.

The music and acting are obnoxious, which I just turn down... but it's so much just freeriding mountain bikes or other stuff across the mountains. I haven't played w friends, but I imagine it would be a ton of fun in MP. Very underrated game!

SlothLordPootus409d ago

I kept getting caught up in other games so I never got around to buying Doom Eternal. If it's good I'll still buy it so i can keep it. The reboot was awesome, i think i played through it about 5 times, and platinumed it.

closed_account408d ago

Same here, I've had Doom Eternal on my wishlist for a long time. I'm definitely jumping in considering the free PS5 upgrade they released.

Storm23408d ago

It is a lot of fun. First FPS in a while that has really grabbed me. And I love FPS games. C’mon Killzone/Resistance series remasters/remakes/sequels…anyt hing.

DefenderOfDoom2408d ago

I agree , Sony has not produced a single player FPS campaign in about 8 years. I already played DOOM Eternal which was awesome.

FallenAngel1984409d ago

A whole lotta Bethesda titles in this lineup

Sackboy also got included as well despite already being as Essential title

crazyCoconuts409d ago

Regarding sackboy, you're right... That's confusing. At least wait until it's not in essential, as it's impossible to have extra without essential.

Welshy408d ago (Edited 408d ago )

Damned if you do and damned if you don't with that one I think. When a former monthly free game goes into the subscription catalog at a later date it also gets criticism, so may as well just add it straight away for people who don't claim it going forward I guess.

Profchaos408d ago

Hopefully the claim on the game counts as a essentials claim so when the game leaves the catalogue it doesn't leave the players library.

I found a similar situation frustrating I played fallout 76 when it was introduced as a premium game a month or so later it was a essentials game and I could not repurchase it so I'll lose the game when it leaves the Library

crazyCoconuts409d ago

Spiderman is in the titles leaving Extra in May. Guess 1st party titles aren't guaranteed to stay

Welshy408d ago

That's just the way of subscription services in general, titles come and go, but I'm sure it'll be back. Maybe it's a Quantum Break deal where it's just a license refresh?

It's one of the reasons I fear a subscription/digital only future. I don't want the platforms telling me what I can and can't play at any given time and waiting of tenterhooks for games I actually want to be available.

closed_account408d ago

Oh boy, that's making me want to jump back into Returnal! Not that I'd mind buying the game, love it.

EvertonFC409d ago

Great Month, own most of them but looking fwd to trying monstor boy, nice sto have EW in my collection now and some wolfeinstein.

Anyone else have a small but noticeable delay in aiming on Borderlands 2? Anytime I move the aiming reticle, there is maybe a quarter of a second (250ms) delay before it moves. Happens in both Handheld and Docked.

jznrpg33d ago

I haven’t bought one shooter for Switch. It’s just to weak to play them good enough. I really don’t play my Switch at all anymore. Going to sell them and wait for Switch 2.

Scheiße! Nein.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the best in the series. After that:
New Order
New Colossus
Old Blood

Harryvok656d ago

I really wish they'd remake Return to Castle Wolfenstein from the ground up. Easily the best of them all.
