This will be interesting. Hopefully, they change the formula around a little bit and deviate from the bland open world with towers you need to climb. The art reminds me a bit of Bioshock Infinite with Comstock and his crazy cult but a redneck version instead. But bring on religious criticism and how people can easily manipulate what their religion says for their evil desires.

Also, what's controversial about a religious cult? I don't see why Christians would be offended by this because what is depicted isn't Christianity anyway - thus the word "cult".

I think sites are just setting up the scene to make a big deal about it when some random people on twitter make some comment, so they can blow it up to get more hits.

Bioshock Infinite was quite literally all about religious dogma taken to the extreme littered with blind patriotism and how it can be evil. Booker ended up being the bad guy. It painted Christians as bigots and racist who lived with a sense of moral self-righteousness. People thought the story was great. No one really complained, and if they did, no one payed attention.

First thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail to the announcement yesterday(or the day before) was that this was going to be a sequal to B:I. I didn't see the title at the time.

I think this whole thing is a non-issue, and realistically, who cares if some people are offended. There is hardly anything nowadays that doesn't offend someone somewhere. Doesn't mean we have to spend copious time trying to appease those people, nor do we have to pander to their delicate sensibilities.

LOL i will never understand people who get offended by videogames. I'm white male Christian (Roman Catholic) and i can't wait for the Far Cry 5 because it's premise and setting looks really interesting and unique. I think people in this day and age think too much and see crazy conspiracy theories in everything, even in video games now. Relax, play games, enjoy life and remember if you are that easily offended by a mere videogame your faith in yourself and your religion is too weak.

Unless it goes around preaching that all Christians are bad, I don't see the problem. Religious fanaticism is a common motivation for antagonists in stories. But it's the extremist that they're criticizing, because it's a theme that people can relate to. I highly doubt far cry is going to go to the point of trying to make the church itself look corrupt, evil, and generally douchey.

Firstly, I'd like to know what meaningful argument against this representation actually exists to the point that it is a huge outcry to the themes involved?

Second, I'd like to know how that outcry is counter to other outcries, and how those other outcries were also not just as meaningless and inconsequential in the bigger picture.

People have a right to their opinions, but right now, I haven't actually seen anything which I would consider a scandal worth even discussing. At this point, no one but the devs and pubs even know the actual story or how it'll be framed. They're upset due to the representation of a religious cult? Why? Are they members of an extremist religious cult? If not, then what is there for them to be offended over? If this game represented all Christians as extremist, then sure, I can understand why people would be upset, otherwise, it just is what it is. A fictional story which uses a religious zealot as an antagonist. It's nothing new.
