The power of desktop GPU's is severely underutilized. Severely.

conanlifts2902d ago (Edited 2902d ago )

Hopefully the new consoles will be good and get developers pushing the gpus on pc a bit more.

GamingTruth2902d ago

Yeah hopefully nintendo nx will be

_-EDMIX-_2902d ago

By new you mean PS5 and XNEXT.

I don't see the new skus doing that as how many developers are going to make titles that use such power knowing they can only do such a thing on a small install base?

I mean....do you see that being done with GTX 980?

You only see such support when everyone is on board, there is a reason why you didn't see any HD 5970 exclusive PC titles bud lol

ONLY when its a new gen and everyone is on board do you see such a thing, not from a optional sku. Many won't do that knowing they run the risk of financial failure. I mean...they could do it, good luck beating the games that year that appear on all platforms and sku types though lol.

One day.

Femto2902d ago

@sd11 unfortunetly the original xbox one and ps4 will be manufactured for the duration of the console generation along side the new improved sku's. games will be compatible with both meaning the old consoles are gonna hold back the new consoles and pc. i wouldn't get too hyped. i really hope im wrong though, the next few years will be very interesting.

conanlifts2902d ago (Edited 2902d ago )

@edmix i think there are a lot of what ifs. I think they will start pushing higher end gpus more IF they start pushing the neo and scorpio, not out of choice but necessity.
I don't by any means think any gpu will be as well utilised on pc as it is on console, but they might have to work harder optimising them for pc as the new consoles are released and Game requirements become greater. My sentence could just as easily be applied to the new wave of GPUs being released due to the huge power jump that is going to happen. They either underutilise the new GPU's or they figure out how to utilise the 970-980ti type gpus better. I don't expect exclusive support and i don't anticipate in game graphics like that shown any time soon.
@Femto, yes that's a strong possibility too. Interestingly though MS has said its up to developers as to whether they make exclusives for the scorpio( xbox one can not get exclusives, scorpio can), where as Sony has said (from what little they have said) no exclusives for neo.

Well this is a 1080, developers can't be targeting something that high end just yet. Give it a year or so, there will be some impressive games.

conanlifts2902d ago

No they did this on the gtx980 not 1080. But still the 980 is still a relatively high end card for now.

_-EDMIX-_2902d ago

"Give it a year or so, there will be some impressive games" ??? LOL!

First this is a 980, not a 1080, second.....no.

You woon't see any developers ringing out "impressive games" using this GPU as they NEVER actually do.

If they didn't last gen with high end cards, why would now be any different?

If only 1 million units of a MEGA GPU sold that had lets say a 11 TFLOP GPU, do you really think some company would be out there making some mega exclusive only for that 1 GPU for those 1 million gamers?

Seriously?

Look at GPU sales NO DIFFERENT then you'd look at console sales. They only get support if the numbers are there. The numbers will never be there for such GPUs as they will always be optional, not required.

The GPUs the get the mass numbers and match the console set ups will be the GPUs that get the bulk of the support.

You don't see developers coming out with games that require you to have some NASA computer do you?

Having the hardware is not the issue bud, numbers.

Ask CDPR why Witcher 3 isn't exclusive to some high end GPU and you'll get the answer to what you are seeking.

kevnb2901d ago (Edited 2901d ago )

My bad, mistyped. Still, the most popular GPU right now on steam is a 970 and many devs target that as the top end.
Even last gen PC graphics got way ahead of the consoles as time went on and PC gamers had better video cards, console games were literally the lowest possibly settings on PC, 720p or less and at 30 fps or less.
And now they sell what PC gamers had and call them remasters :)

_-EDMIX-_2902d ago

Yes, but what are developers to do? How many actually will own a GTX 980?

Consider a GPU like the install base of a console, in order for it to get exclusive support, lots actually have to own it.

This is the best thing about consoles is all are the same by a default. When PS5 and XNEXT have such GPUs inside them, THEN will you see such levels of graphics from PC. They can't afford to actually produce a game with such visuals only on a small set of GPUs.

One day we'll get this clearly and PS Neo and Scorpio are helping drive that price down greatly. To my understanding, Scorpio's GPU meets or even beats a GTX 980, one can only wonder what XNEXT and PS5's GPU's will be like.

conanlifts2902d ago (Edited 2902d ago )

Do you think there will be an xbox next though if this new model works? Or do you think every 3 years MS will roll out a new console, making the 1st tier obsolete, I.e. scorpio 2 would play everything, but nothing for scorpio 2 would work on the original xbox one.

_-EDMIX-_2902d ago

@sd11- Good question.

I do think there will be a XNEXT as MS has confirmed they will still make another XB. Its not really about beating PS, its about making money. When a platform moves 20 million units, might move 50 million before this gen is done, that is still money, that is still something worth creating and profiting from. The goal is to make money from services and games, MS will be fine.

I think next gen, MS and Sony might actually launch with 2 sku's each, someone on here stated that as an idea which was actually pretty good.

1 normal sku as the base, a super charged optional sku, 1 market, all games work on all platforms.

"scorpio 2 would play everything, but nothing for scorpio 2 would work on the original xbox one"

I could see that being a thing, but I don't think it would be wise to name it Scorpio 2, let "Scorpio" merely be the name of the upgrades and let what ever they make as the new platform have a different name. I think if they begin marketing it like a new platform vs a new sku, they will lose some of their core install base of consumers who will then start assuming they will not support the older platforms.

Its best to treat it like a new platforms and give it a different name.

I can see BC being a thing for both Sony and MS as x86 is something that is easily ported and transferable, compared to something like PS3's cell.

I think in 3 years or so, MS and Sony will roll out new consoles and leave the older ones behind, could even be longer as PS4.5 and Scorpio could give some consumers some breathing room if they want the extra performance.

I think upgrades will be as normal as slims and I think such a thing can help assist driving the cost of those GPUs down further it insure we have a beast GPU for the start of a new gen.

Scorpio and Neo are not really starts to a new gen, but lets be honest......its better we get 4TFLOPs and 6TFLOPS as mere sku options for a few years, vs 4TFLOPS and 6TFLOPS as NEW CONSOLES for the next 6 years.

This gives us way, way...waaaaaaaay more of a chance of having PS5 and XNEXT have extremely significant power jumps compared to PS3/360 to PS4/XONE. Could you imagine a 8TFLOP PS5 or 9TFLOP XNEXT?

Better to have some of that this gen, then to have it as the default next gen. I say lets drive down the cost now, to get even BETTER GPUs for the start of a new generation.

FlameBaitGod2902d ago

I know, when you see games like Uncharted and Horizon, it really makes you think what current GPU;s could actually do if they tried. If they can do amazing graphics with PS4's Gpu imagine if they did that with all PC ports.

Great stuff. Whoever made that ought to do a feature length movie!

Erik73572902d ago

What about a fricken game? Why cant we have crazy new ip's like this?

_-EDMIX-_2902d ago

"Why cant we have crazy new ip's like this?" We do all the time.

Detroit

Horizon Zero Dawn

The Order 1886

Ryse

Destiny

Watchdogs

The Division

Evil Within

Days Gone

The list goes on. We get new IPs pretty much every gen like clockwork. Doesn't mean what you saw was ever going to be a game or even a good game for that matter. Its pretty easy to make a video of something with no concepts of design or structure of gameplay bud. It seriously is.

I can write one in a short number of hours, doesn't actually mean what I've written or graphically created would be any good of a game. Gaming is not merely JUST about the concept of.

It cost millions to produce, it must actually make sense as a game. If looking good was all they needed to do, Ryse and The Order should be doing gangbusters right now lol I mean, I wish this was something too, but I'm not so naive as to just believe its THAT easy.

Erik73572902d ago

Detroit looks mediocre, ryse sucked, the order 1886 sucked, watch dogs sucked, destiny sucked, the division sucked

Not saying we don't have awesome new IP's just not enough. Should of clarified and said "why cant we have crazy new GOOD ip's like this" by good i mean new ips that look like they would have a promising narrative single player. Evil Within was damn good and Horizon Zero Dawn looks great.

maybelovehate2902d ago

I have been using Unity for a long time, but I have never been able to achieve lighting and shading like that. Very impressed. Can't wait till they release the shaders they used to create it.

UltraNova2902d ago

I m interested to see some of your work, any links?

Support ng4 bros guys.

Kingdomcome2472902d ago

Wow. I had no idea that Unity was capable of this. Those were quite possibly the best real time graphics that I've ever seen. The lighting was phenomenal. I'd love to play a game in this universe as well.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21832d ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan2d ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga2d ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--2d ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC2d ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop1d 23h ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

This will surely shut up all the new trolling accounts trying to spread lies and non facts in other articles comment sections before this article is posted.

Hofstaderman2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Obscurely, those trolls or troll will not show in these articles as the truth is contradictory to his or their orchard-sized daily dose of copium and hopium.

Or... They're intentionally trolling you guys specifically. Because they know it upsets you so easily.

Name-dropping Orchard, after this many months? How long has it been and he's still in your thoughts?

I'm quite sure the individual is reading these positive comments downvoting & seething at the same time. Edit: It just downvoted my comment...lol!!

Hofstaderman2d ago

No I'm entertained by this individual. I love unhinged people, they are so interesting lol.

repsahj2d ago

Wow! I am super impressed that in just 4 years, ps5 already caught up to the PS4's. Congratulations.

JackBNimble1d 10h ago

That happens when half of your games are cross platform. I'm still waiting to see what the ps5 is capable of, because they sure haven't pushed any limits.

And where are all these ps5 exclusive games?

sagapo2d ago

Not really surprised as Sony barely has any competition at the moment.
