Don't expect to be blown away by the new Gran Turismo on PS4 - EuroGamer

After a fairly long wait, we've finally got a chance to play Gran Turismo on PlayStation 4 - and it's more than a little underwhelming.

Yeah, it looks good. The exaggerations are really interesting.

Overload2930d ago (Edited 2930d ago )

It's Eurogamer, they love hating on games early on.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

"First impressions might suggest a visually upgraded 1080p Uncharted experience - something we would relish - but could it be that the real generational leap lies in how it plays?"

Like seriously, look how this ended up.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

"But along comes Uncharted 4 with a mandate to show what the future holds for this console generation, and in particular Sony's big exclusives. The jungles and cities shown so far are just the tip of the iceberg - only two stops on a globe-trotting tour for both Nathan Drake and Naughty Dog's talented artists. Launching ahead of the gorgeous Horizon Zero Dawn, in Spring 2016, it feels like the PS4 is about to step up a gear in technical accomplishment, and with Naughty Dog once again at the spearhead of the movement."

naruga2929d ago (Edited 2929d ago )

Eurogamer was always Xbox friendly and they always hide some derogatory words for PS consoles even from early Ps3 era...

hay2929d ago

It's not that easy to make GT visuals even better. They have already nailed down the colour palette, proportions, lighting and weather system along with the photo-realistic aesthetics. All they can do now is improve the fidelity, It was never about fantasy visuals but making it look authentic.

freshslicepizza2928d ago

i saw the new trailer and at first it was looking awesome, until the gameplay started. they seem to be more focus on the photo mode. i am beginning to wonder what these guys do because they seem to waste so much time and the game is apparently only 50% done. gt7, not this game, was shooting for a 2014 release date. now we won't see it until probably 2018 at the earliest.

this game looks like a quick cash-in much like gt5 prologue. just in time to get it out for psvr.

Gaming1012928d ago (Edited 2928d ago )

Everyone, stop attacking the source since other sources are saying the exact same thing. Did you even look at the gameplay videos and hear the horrible engine noises and outdated sound effects?

Polyphany Digital is getting lazy. This is the same game engine being used since day 1, thus you have the screen tearing, the aliasing, the bad smoke effects, the exact same engine noises (that sound like vacuum cleaners) and tire screeching noises since GT1. Nothing has been reworked, it looks and plays just like GT6. The engine makes it too difficult to do damage modeling so that's out as well.

Either fix the sound and dull, drab graphics or to heck with GT Sport. I've been a diehard GT fan since GT1 and I just can't with this outdated dinosaur of a series anymore.

Nothing spectacular tbh. But VR could make this something truly special. I hope they do PROPER damage though. Hardly any racers get that right.

This is what I was saying all along. VR propels this game to being anywhere near impressive. As far as base visuals go, it's mediocre.

But with a VR headset on, will indeed be incredible. This is a VR game through and through.

Seriously ?

I can't see even hardcore GT fans defending this game. Not worthy of a GT title.

Rookie_Monster2929d ago

Yea, I've been a GT fan since GT3 on PS2 and the series has been on a decline since GT4. GT sports looks like a wrong decision as they should make a full blown GT7 and they could have easily added a separate VR mode to it and that should be the way to go.

By focusing the resources entirely to getting GT sports to make the PSVR launch window and cut the Ps4 graphical powers to cater to having the spec requires for PSVR, it is seriously disappointing to many PS4 fans indeed.

hay2929d ago (Edited 2929d ago )

Every GT fan knows this series does not need defending and that there's no need to mince words with people who think otherwise.

2pacalypsenow2929d ago (Edited 2929d ago )

@Rookie_Monster Decline of what? that you cant paint your car with unicorns? destroy your car? Physics were great and the car selection and races too and the graphics were terrific any real fan of GT would know that, GT Sport was made for the FiA GT Championship and given to PS4 gamers as a bonus,.

Like I said on another article

"I think people forgot the whole point of this game lol, the game is a "partnership" with FiA. This game will enable the top players to participate in the FiA GT Championship virtually and recognize them as they do in the actual event. They will also be rewarded with the FiA trophies and recognized in their official FiA page."

This isn't a GT sequel or demo, its being specifically made for the FiA GT Championship.

And? lol if it lacks proper car sounds, has dated physics, only 130 cars. Explain to me how thats acceptable in a title thats been in development for 3 years....

extermin8or2928d ago

Such dated physics that the fia are recognising it and top players will win trophys and such alongside the real life drivers etc......

Bruh2928d ago

LOL its called buying a license, the authenticity of the game's physics has nothing to do with FIA allowing them to use the franchise tag. If thats the case iRacing and Asseto would have had those ages ago, none the less I can't vouch for the physics I haven't played it, just saying IFFF it did have dated physics not that it DOESS

Mulando2929d ago

GT is and was never a Sim. Yes it is more simulation than an arcade racer like Driveclub, but that doesn't make it a sim racer.

RiseofScorpio2928d ago

The real sim racers are on PC. Vacuum Turismo Sport is just a console sim.

Eonjay2928d ago

Super troll on the warpath. No, need for rescue mate. The video I posted shows a game that is 50% complete but already looks better than any 60FPS racer on consoles this gen. For other racers, this would be considered a victory in its current state. Of course, this isn't just any racer. The GT series is know for raising the bar and no doubt it will.

RiseofScorpio2928d ago

The GT series hasnt raised the bar in 12 years.

rainslacker2928d ago

Anyone know if there are any uncompressed RAW videos of the trailer or marketing videos being put out?

Even the official streamed video isn't doing it for me, and would like something I can actually see better details on.

Eonjay2928d ago

Not yet. Waiting for something to show up on Gameryde.

otherZinc2928d ago

I agree with the title. In fact, since February 2013, I knew Gran Turismo "Next" wouldn't get close to Forza Motorsport "Next".

Exoil2928d ago

Which of the Forza Nexts do you mean?

But yes, Turn 10 have done a good job with the gfx on Forza.
Just imagine what they could have done on PS4, perhaps even add a decent physics engine?

I'm really excited but the lack of content compared to the Forza series is worrying me

Aloy-Boyfriend2930d ago

Compared to a yearly release...

TheGreatGamer2930d ago

450 cars is much more than GT Sport though. Personally, as excited as I am for a return to the GT series, I'm still waiting for GT7 which I know will blow everyone's socks off!

Aloy-Boyfriend2930d ago (Edited 2930d ago )

It's much more because the cars have been stacking up since Forza 5. You gotta consider the odds before comparing. Didn't forza 5 have some sort of criticsim for lack of cars as well?

This is a sim made from scratch for current gen, and that number of premium cars isn't really as bad. Then again, this is GT7 prologue pretty much, not really GT7.

Gazondaily2930d ago

Yearly releases don't look so bad now eh?

Rookie_Monster2929d ago (Edited 2929d ago )

Well, here lies the problem. If a yearly release can have 3x the amount of cars and have more and more on every release than a game that takes 3-5 years between releases, one have to wonder, why can't GT get more cars since they have ample time to do so?

When Forza 5 was released, many bashed it for the lack of cars at 200 plus, then a couple years later, Forza 6 has 450 plus. Since this is the first GT game on PS4 and will be 3 years since GT6 was released, why it only has a car count way less than Forza 5, a launch title?

EazyC2929d ago

Elit3Nick2929d ago

@XiKurapikaKurta The main point of these articles is that GT Sport isn't anywhere NEAR current gen, and that it's still reusing assets from the PS2 days. Case in point http://s1075.photobucket.co...

Yes Forza was heavily criticized for its lack of tracks and cars. However FM5 has 200 this game only has 130, FM5 had 17 tracks and the has 19, difference being one was a launch title, the other has been in production for 3 years

IamTylerDurden12928d ago

Forza 6 looks much better and has much more content.

DopeTech did I mention anything about how it looks? All I said is that he's trolling and he IS on every single article out for GT. BTW Driveclub looks way better than any of them and has real day cicles and weather so what's your point?
Still GT is only 50% done so I'll wait and see. Like I'll wait and see how the new Gears look because the Beta was not a good showing at all.

Movefasta19932929d ago

that's just a different part of the track lol

rainslacker2928d ago

@Move

So it's acceptable for him to use one shot of the track to make a judgement on the graphics, but not acceptable for us to use another screenshot of the track to make a judgement call or dispute his assertion?

I could take all the best looking games by anyone's standards, and easily find a way to make a shot that makes it look less than ideal. It doesn't really speak to the overall quality of the graphics.

I'd like Magician to give me what games he thinks look the best, so I can just show him exactly what I mean.

When those Gears of War 4 trailers came out every Xbox fan was all like "but the game is not done" and "it's an alpha build". Gran Turismo trailers are released when the game is 50% done and all of a sudden they want to judge an unfinished game.

Gran Turismo Sport Has Been Delisted From PS Store

Sony Interactive Entertainment has delisted Gran Turismo Sport from the PlayStation Store as of January 1, 2024.

ApocalypseShadow143d ago

The great digital future. Where games vanish. The benefits of digital just aren't enough over physical to every buy in 100 percent. Especially when my Atari games still work and can be played to this day over 40 years later. Some of these digital games don't even last a whole generation.

purple101143d ago

But in this case everyone who has it still has it

And they unlocked single player to be allowed to progress offline

ApocalypseShadow141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

But in the case of others, they can no longer can buy it or any delisted game. Just like online only games that get their servers turned off and there's no update for offline with bots.

If you like the idea of any digital game being delisted where it's no longer available at all, then you and others are fools. What's all that presentation bullshit guys like you spew?

There should be no reason any digital game should be removed. Ever.

Bathyj141d ago

Apocalypse no one likes it. But let's be clear here.

If you own the game, you still own it. All that's happening here is they are stopped selling it.

Why? I have no clue. But it's the exact same thing if your local best buy isn't stocking the disc anymore and Sony aren't making any more. Same thing, just in the digital realm.

If you want to complain about servers for an online game being shut down, go ahead. But that's a separate topic and can happen to any online game even with a physical disc.

fan_of_gaming141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

@Bathyj "But it's the exact same thing if your local best buy isn't stocking the disc anymore and Sony aren't making any more. Same thing, just in the digital realm."

It isn't the exact same thing at all. When a game gets a physical release, it is always available even if big-box retailers aren't selling it new anymore. For example, I can go on eBay today and buy a new & sealed copy of Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron for PS3, because it once had a physical release. However I cannot buy a copy of Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron for PS4 today, because it had a digital-only release and was delisted.

If Gran Turismo Sport had a digital-only release, it would be unavailable for anyone to buy ever again. But because it had a physical release, in 5 years someone that wants to play it can still acquire it.

Cacabunga141d ago

People should stand against digitalization

purple101141d ago (Edited 140d ago )

I have only brought one or two digital games in my life
Everything I buy is physical

Often from eBay in perfect condition.
Sometimes from a online shop in uk such as

365games
Shopto.net
Simplygames
Base.com

All, who will ship disk to your door on day of release, cheaper than buying from digital store.

Then I either keep, lend, or sell. My choice

No where, did I say I support digital. And yet someone even called me a fool,
Haha
Totally misunderstood, some would say, he’s the fool

With GtSport It ISNT being taken away from anyone who already owns it. So this has all got out of hand with people not even reading the article

Maybe this will make people realise the future of digital-only games

purple101142d ago

This one won’t though
Because it’s not de-listed and taken away from you
It’s just not on sale anymore and the multiplayer will be shut down soon I reckon. It released 2017 so it’s had a fair run of 5 years online multiplayer lobbies

DigitallyAfflicted141d ago

@Purple, but it could be taken away, like p.t. Demo was, as well is taken away from anyone who didn't purchase GTsport in a digital form and yes I know we can still buy disc version and it's not a big of a deal.

My point is that you can't own something if it's not physical, with digital-only content you pay for the right to download and use and possibly in the future there will be some laws regulating you rights to it…

blackblades141d ago

I mean y'all been whining about that since the ps3 era. To this day im still able to play all the games I payed for.

ApocalypseShadow141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

It won't. Fools like purple think that just because they can still download it now, that it's safe. I've bought multiple games on console and mobile that are no longer downloadable or function. Because the game was either delisted or since it was connected to the Internet, no longer works because the servers were shut down turning those games into coasters. With no update to be able to play some games offline with bots. They're gone.

He won't get it or care until it happens to him and some of his games are delisted and removed or don't work any more even if he "bought it "

EvertonFC141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

If you don't keep your old consoles, your physical disk will be useless too. Do you think console hardware or disk drives will be around in 20 years. Good luck with that.
I'm not saying it's right btw, just pointing out to the physical crowd that digital and physical are very alike when it comes to actually being able to play the games in the future like 20 years time.
When I'm in my care home, I don't expect to be able to play my old digital or physical collection as consoles won't be around or disk drives for playstation.
Unless your keeping the old consoles safe in the attic over time, nobody will be playing there old physical game collections.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 141d ago
EvertonFC141d ago

If you bought a physical launch day copy of GTS you still won't be able to download any of the updates in 20 years when servers are off.
Plus there will be no such thing as a disk drive or a hardware box for that matter in 20 years unless you keep your old consoles.
My point is sadly your physical or digital copy won't work.

Barlos141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

I see this as the digital equivalent of physical games going out of print. They don't continue to make copies forever, at some point they will stop making it, usually when sales dry up and I guess for GT sport that happened some time ago. Also, in the digital world, storage space is not infinite. If a game is no longer selling, why would they waste space on keeping it available?

For those that already own the digital version, they will still have access to it.

frostypants141d ago

I generally agree, but GT Sport is primarily an online game. They probably have some reluctance to deal with the blowback of selling an online-oriented game that may not have active servers much longer. Admittedly that's a whole other issue in itself.

purple101241d ago

GT sport was good. Gt7 is better.

For someone who was crap at racers (and still is) and only played kart racers with powerups, I can say GT sport and gt7 balance SIM/ arcade racing to perfection. Easy enough for anyone to play and not crash but with enough depth to master for years.

Totally different to need for speed / Forza handling where the cars feel 'floaty'.

The dualsense is just supreme with gt7 toi

badz149240d ago

So...will they enable offline saves now or what?

VariantAEC235d ago

From Gran-Turismo.com (the article liked above): "All existing cars and personalized Car Settings kept in Garage will be accessible. Gameplay progression required as normal to unlock additional cars and items."

So... yes, as far as I can tell you'll still be able to use all your collected and purchased cars and race on all the tracks in the game and unlock ones you might not already have access to. That's what I'm getting from the post, but time will tell if this actually comes to pass February 1st, 2024.

Agent75240d ago

After Turismo 4 on the PS2, the series was never the same. Although Turismo 4 wasn't a finished game and didn't play as good as Turismo 3. Turismo 5 on PS3 was a mess, Turismo 6 was Turismo 5 finished. Sport on PS4 was another mess, especially VR mode. Sort of back on track with Turismo 7, but so tiring as with the Forza series. Anyone remember the PSP version that had no championship mode? Turismo has always been average at best.

OmegaSoldati240d ago

Thats why i dont like online only games. Cant believe this, this game sold so well. You need to be a fanboy to keep supporting Sony after this. Bought this thinking that it would take 10 years for this. I'm lucky that there are enough classics and single players for a life time.

VariantAEC235d ago

Looks like PD has the potential to set the bar for closing out always online games.
Back when GT Sport launched you couldn't do anything when you couldn't access the servers, but it looks like GT Sport will retain access to SP race modes, custom races, VR, your full garage, and all tracks. This is much more than what was available at launch if offline.

We still will lose custom liveries and race suits, which is nonsense, but hey if you share them online now they will be in the cloud and available to you in GT7 if you're interested. Basically, we lose MP, but players keep everything we earned and whatever was paid for.
