When Censorship Just Means Common Sense: Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 & Xenoblade Chronicles X

Callum May from The Koalition writes:

"Censorship is a complex issue and it’s very easy to say that “Censorship is never the right thing to do.” In fact, it’s such an easy phrase that it’s been the motto over the last week following controversies over Xenoblade Chronicles X‘s localisation and Dead or Alive Xtreme 3‘s lack of a western release altogether. However, the situations involved are rarely so clear. There are cases where censorship merely seems to be the product of hypersensitivity by media ratings boards (shoutout to the Australian Classification Board) but then there’s also situations like these, where the publishers involved made the correct call, given the circumstances."

I'm not a fan of censorship unless it's an extreme case. People are way too sensitive these days.

Yi-Long3097d ago

Same here. I don't see anything even remotely offensive in the cases of Xenoblade X or Dead or Alive Xtreme. If anyone doesn't like it, simply don't buy it. It really doesn't need to be censored at all.

N4GGuy243097d ago

Very well written article a far cry from the puberscent reaction we been seeing.

pcz3097d ago

i think its a shit game anyway.

would people buy it if all the women featured in the game were wearing baggy jeans and jumpers? ie buying it for the gameplay? i doubt it.

its a shit game with the only draw being softcore 'pornography'.

but still, im not sure it should be banned or censored, they should just market it for what it is. create a special rating or whatever for games with sexual themes.

i mean, its not the first time in western history that sex has been used so shamelessly to sell a product. the games industry needs to grow up

Concertoine3097d ago (Edited 3097d ago )

It's actually a pretty fun game. The volleyball is fun and the social sim stuff is kind of hilarious... not sure how much more you can expect from a sports game other than solid gameplay. It has Dennis Rodman for crying out loud.

JJShredder3097d ago

Who cares if sex sells? The problem with Tecmo/Koei's atitude is that they aren't even giving consumers the choice.

Last time I checked, people that are offended by this aren't being forced into buying it.

vanity293097d ago

M rating should cover it. Not like there's actual sex in it.

DragoonsScaleLegends3097d ago

I thought the A rating existed? I don't see a issue with just giving it that rating and releasing it.

mrbojingles3097d ago

Retailers don't carry those games so it would make even more sense for Tecmo to not release if it was rated that, which is should be since its pretty much software porn along with a disturbing character who looks like she's 14-16

imXify3097d ago

In Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, the purpose was that they all wear different type of bikinis to fit the settings and it works well imo.

But in the case of Xenoblade. I don't care about the age but the suit is freaking terrible and impractical for the setting. With whatever they had "sexy" in mind, the design is simply piss poor. The US version is already better and more suitable for battle.

When you design characters you want to keep things coherent. If I asked the devs why they designed a more than half naked suit for a girl, I'm pretty sure they would answer: "Uhhhhhhh...boobaroos???& quot; No. Try again.

Romudeth3097d ago

While this was a well written article, I have to disagree with some of it. I'm a proponent of 'censorship is never right' and I don't think anything should be banned or, in this case, limited. We live in a world now where people want to not see things that are offensive to them and try to actively block anything of that nature. That is wrong and stifles creativity.

As gamers and as people, we should want to have MORE diversity, not less. These two games show that the vocal minority are winning the debate, even though many of the people complaining aren't even gamers or would have purchased these titles anyway. We can't allow censorship of this sort to continue if we want to play games that challenge us and make us see the world differently.

I'm not saying that Xtreme 3 is a revolutionary game or anything like that, but even a title like it deserves to be distributed to a wider audience and they can then decide if they want to buy it. Its release shouldn't be limited due to the outcry of a vocal few. Koei Tecmo should show some spine and stand up to these bullies (which is exactly what they are).

mrbojingles3097d ago

Was anything censored? Tecmo knows this game will review poorly, sell poorly and get negative attention for silly, unrealistic portrayals of women. They know the fans that want it will just import it anyway so they're still getting the hardcore fans who find fun in these mediocre games, so if anyone is to blame its Tecmo. They're just trying to redirect the blame off themselves.

DragoonsScaleLegends3097d ago

The fact of the matter is that this isn't porn and I've seen unrated/r-rated versions of movies that actually have "real life" porn in them sold in stores so I don't see why a-rated "fake" games would not release in stores along with them.

Romudeth3097d ago

By what Koei Tecmo said, this seems to be a case of self-censorship. They weren't forced to not release the game. They felt that they couldn't, given the culture climate in the West these days.

Whether they did it to redirect blame is something we don't know for sure. I'm just going off what they said. Again, with everything that is happening in gaming now, I don't blame them for wanting to avoid all the backlash this title would no doubt ignite.

Ark_3097d ago (Edited 3097d ago )

Well, I am on your page concerning this game, but I think a "censorship is never right" attitude is pretty extreme as well. You need to have certain rules in society, which defines what you can do and what not. In my book it's for example a good thing, that there are no "How to build a bomb for dummies"-do-it-yourself guides published in my country ... or a "How to get away with rape and murder 101" by Prof. Dr. Lawier.

Many more examples come to mind, but I think you get my point ...

Profexxion3097d ago

This was definitely common sense and the "WHOA NO SJWs WIN AGAIN" knee jerk response is annoying and quite ironic considering how those same people make SJWs out to be overly sensitive. Entertainment culture is very different in Japan vs EU/US, explicitly so when it comes to sexuality. This isn't a "vocal few" situation and to say so is ignoring many years of differences between the cultures. Be mindful of that instead of jumping so quickly to shade people with your ridiculous conspiracies.

annoyedgamer3097d ago (Edited 3097d ago )

I read that entire comment and I still cannot find your point. All I see is "SJW's are good stop making them look bad".

I bet you are a huge proponent of cultural diversity, which begs the question how are you pro-censorhip?

I know the answer already I am just interested in seeing how you will spin it.

mrbojingles3097d ago

I can't speak for the person who quoted, but I would say I am all for cultural diversity but anti-censorship. This isn't censorship, Tecmo isn't removing content they're just not localizing it because it won't make them money, despite what they may say.

You can be for diversity and still anti-censorship. No one wants to take away these nearly-softcore porn games, they just say they think they're not good. If you truly enjoy something there will always be people who dislike it and will give you flack for it. Its on you how to handle it, vice versa when you dish out that flack on something.

I mean, there have been pushes in the past to have better female portrayals, better black/latino/etc portrayals in music, film, tv, literature in recent decades in the US and I don't know anyone who would say those forms of media got worse for it. Games will be the same and you'll still get your softcore too.

Look at how women were portrayed in films when the original Mad Max came out and look at how much they've improved (while still some flawed ones, that will never go away) with this year's Mad Max which practically had a female lead that wasn't really sexualized at all and was amazing.

s45gr323097d ago

The US hollywood films have sex, nudity, etc. Hell one of the best American Films is A clockwork Orange a movie about rape. Another highly regarded film Straw Dogs another rape film. Sigh!!! The real issue is that gaming whether people accepted or not its still designed for children .

Kenshin_BATT0USAI3097d ago

It's funny that you say that because if clockwork orange came out today you can bet your tight ass it would get torn apart by the politically correct crowd.

rainslacker3097d ago

It's not a vocal few...it's a group of people who are neither consumers of the game, nor it's target audience to begin with.

I wouldn't call this situation censorship, as censorship implies something is changed or blocked from view once available. But since the game simply isn't being sold, it's more a avoidance of this vocal group who are far from representative of the gaming community.

In no other place in gaming are the vocal few listened to, or even taken seriously by the media, the publishers, and often times the rest of the community. Why are the SJW's getting this respect when the most devout of gamers are being ignored?

etebitan3097d ago

yeah cause the kardashians, miley cyrus, britney back then, etc etc.. dont make money, sorry, TONS of money in the west by selling sex... -.- stop beign hipocrites.. movies have sexy female leads.. the music industry is overcrowded with, im sorry, sluts (look at miley for example)... So stop blaming cultural diferences for this.. america loves it sex as much as japan, or even more..

"Not all censorship is worthy of outrage, sometimes it’s just worthy of a shrug and a “whatever.” And honestly, within the gaming climate of the past years, we need a few more “whatever” moments."

The writer of this article is a contradictory @sshole. If that's how you feel about it than take the same stance when something is not censored. You want us to agree to this nonsense only because it's censorship that makes sense to you and swings toward a view you agree with. Well to you I say eat sh!7.

Censorship to appease those who don't agree with particular artistic merits does not have a place in creative freedom. If you don't like something you don't buy it period. You don't put pressure on its creators to change it.

annoyedgamer3097d ago

There is no form of censorship that is common sense. Soon censoring those disagreeing with the current political climate will be "common sense" oh wait...

Yea. I own it but don’t want to pull out the Wii U

Zeldafan64335d ago

I never unplugged my Wii U. Still play it almost daily but a definitive edition of X would be appreciated.

jznrpg335d ago (Edited 335d ago )

It’s one of the systems I have the least games for . Though there are some really good games on it. I have systems from Atari’s , Nintendo’s, Segas , TurboGrafx 16 , PS’s etc etc so I put a few in my game storage room. I do pull it out from time to time and I have a new one in a box but won’t open that .
But I’d really like to have a Chronicles X but not on Switch whatever the next console is preferably so they can add more quality to it .

Zeldafan64334d ago

Lucky, you didn't need to explain that.

Zeldafan64335d ago (Edited 335d ago )

Playing X at 1080/60 would be great so waiting for the Switch successor would be ideal but it wouldn't be smart to make it a launch game. It would suck waiting til 2025 to get X definitive edition but I think that's what will happen.

I know people say Wii U has no games but I've got over 100 games for it.

luckytrouble335d ago

I mean, when people say a system has "no games" they aren't saying the system literally had no games released on it. They're more commenting on the state of games that make the system worth owning. For many the Wii U never had a game that made the system worth owning, or if it did, it has a Switch port or successor at this point anyways so they were effectively proven correct to have never purchased a Wii U in the first place.

Yes, depending on the individual the Wii U remains worth owning for the handful of games still locked to it, but for many they'd rather just wait to see what else gets ported in the future at this point. There is exceptionally little you can only play on a Wii U these days though, especially with the eShop dead so anything that may have existed only on it is no longer of consequence to non-Wii U owners.

chaos999335d ago

They said it cost too much time to remap controls unfortunately

luckytrouble335d ago

In all fairness, that's probably a reason they're passing on a few of the still Wii U locked games. Starfox Zero, among the reasons you may not want to port it, would need its entire control scheme reworked from the ground up. Chronicles X may not be as extreme of a case (I don't know, I've never played or watched gameplay), but often unless a game is going to sell really well, it can be hard to convince a company to do more than the basic expected remaster work. Heck, a lot of people figure the only reason we got Galaxy 1 in the 3D All Stars collection for example is because they had already done the work for the Nvidia Shield port for China, which subsequently is likely the major reason they didn't include Galaxy 2. They simply did not want to remap the game controls. It may sound silly since it sounds so simple just by the words, but you have to figure more goes into it than you're probably thinking if it's that much of a sticking point.

DefaultComment335d ago

Yes, I agree. We definitely need to retake Xenoblade Chronicles X which btw it left us on a cliffhanger suggesting there wiull be a XCX2 .... and im up for it.

isarai335d ago (Edited 335d ago )

I put so many hours into X, just please ad a music volume setting was going crazy walking around base and hearing

"UH UH... YEAH!.. YEAH!...YEAHYEAHYEEEEAAAAH!..U H UH!"

I can't believe they haven't done it yet, it's the Xenoblade game I'm most excited for, I would buy it in a heart beat.

I wish The Last Story would make a comeback.I played it years before I got around to Xenoblade. Mainly because of the scalping going on because of Xeno's limited run. It took me a few tries to get into it but once I did I couldn't put it down. A Wii hidden gem for sure.

pietro1212772d ago

As much as I love Xenoblade, Last Story was the better game IMO. I wish Nintendo would remaster or simply port the game onto the Switch.

porkChop773d ago

Xenoblade went on to be a really successful franchise too.

pietro1212773d ago

I wish the Last Story get a Switch remaster or remake. That game deserves a second chance

If they're not important enough to be held on their own official storefront then they're not important enough to give your money to Nintendo.

Buy these, physically, used or simply emulate them.

This article comes off as nothing more than advertising games that Nintendo, themselves, don't care to offer you... buy now!

ocelot07814d ago

Wait hang on where all the outrage? I swear when Sony tried to do this with PS3 last year. There was outrage from all corners of the gaming universe.

Why does no one care Nintendo is doing it?

MadLad814d ago (Edited 814d ago )

There has been.
A lot of it.

Simply type in "3DS" in Google and tell me what you see.

ocelot07814d ago

Oh I have a fair few websites reporting on it. But where is the outcry on here? I remember their was 2-3 approved top voted articles when Sony announced they where closing the PS3 store. All slating them and not caring about customers.

I should of worded it better. Where is all the outrage on n4g?

MadLad814d ago (Edited 814d ago )

N4G is a fanboy site, mainly frequented by only Sony.
Microsoft is their direct competition, so you'll typically only see articles that are made to rile up those fanbases.

Nintendo does it's own thing, so they're rarely brought up, aside from their fans. The most you get is the same typical two or three posters claiming Nintendo is only for infants.

If you come to N4G for educated discourse and reasonable discussion, this isn't the place. Sad as it is.

pietro1212814d ago

It's lame that it is shutting down. Now I feel rushed buying all the rpgs I missed out on the system.

XxINFERNUSxX813d ago

You guys know that even archive.org has 3DS roms, and all other console roms. I'm downloading 846GB of 3DS roms and will add the best games to my soon to be soft modded New 3DS 😁. Might as well throw in DS and other emulators in there to. Guys this would be the best way to play and enjoy the 3DS. Just need to buy a bigger micro SD card and format it to FAT32, which you can if it's even 256GB or larger there are ways.
