Matt-IGN's Too Human Impressions

Matt-IGN Writes: "'ve received about a dozen e-mails from readers asking for my opinion of Too Human, but I've held off on writing anything about the title until I could sink some quality time into it. The game seems to have been scrutinized recently by the press and also by the NeoGAF forum, I suspect because of several factors. One, it's been in development for a long time. You could say since the PS1 era, although such a claim is hardly fair. Too Human was an altogether different game back then. The title as it exists today was started on Xbox 360. Two, SK president Denis Dyack is an outspoken guy who has talked up the title. And when you talk something up, anything less than megatonian is bound to be a letdown. And three, Too Human was unfortunately shown in an extremely rough state at E3 2006, and SK has had to battle to overcome the perception that the title is incredibly flawed ever since. Thus, the scrutiny, which is practically unavoidable. Any hands-on update, my own included, would at this point have to touch upon, bare minimum, whether or not the game has delivered on its potential."

Pretty positive preview. Can't wait for the varied review scores. This will be one of those games that each site gives a suprising score to it ranging from 4-5 to 9 if this super positive preview and super negative previews from other sites are any indication.

Lord Vader5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

"Control and combat are surprisingly tight and fun -- these two areas represented my biggest concerns going in, but they have really come together since the first time I saw the game in motion. The story is engaging. And the loot / character and weapon upgrade system is very deep and addictive."

"When you are significantly leveled up and sliding all over the screen in a flash, popping enemies into the air and holding them there with your guns, the game is downright intense, not to mention thoroughly satisfying."

Awesome, awesome news. Can't wait for August !

ry-guy5787d ago

I'm up for this game too. I've been keeping an eye on it for the past year now.

MK_Red5787d ago

I'm with you both. I'm definitly getting this one and using my own judgement. I may love it or hate it but at least, will find out which previewers were right (At least according to my tastes).

ry-guy5787d ago

The poor previews seemed to be written with this undertone of Silicon Knights kicking their dogs and not liking their mothers cooking. It almost seems like some of these negative previewers are offended by the game. Perhaps it is just me.

Mr_Bun5787d ago

I agree...but it is nice to see a good (unbiased) review of the game, and from someone who actually played the game!

u got owned5787d ago

It's good to finally see a good preview of this game. I've been following this game since it was announce and is good to see that some people really appreciate what Sk has done with this game.

Great news, cant wait.

Bnet3435787d ago

I am not giving up on this game. Silicon Knights deserve a chance.

MK_Red5787d ago

Good point ry-guy. Some preview it in a way that you think they have personal problems with devs.

BUBBLES FOR YOU ALL! :)

AlienGorilla5786d ago

Talk about Deja Vu. This is almost the same case as was with Haze for PS3. Haze got pushed back several times, and TH was in development for ever. In both situations the hype was built up sooooo much that many were disappointed with the final product.

I have a feeling the review scores are going to mirror Haze, if not be a little stronger. Haze got reviews that averaged to 4.0 to 9.0, granted with more below average review. Something tells me there is going to be the same disparity with the review scores of Too Human.

Before i get bashed and called a Sony Fanboy, I'll have all of you know that I never played the Haze, just the demo. My impressions of the demo were: awful graphics, generic shooting, nothing special. On my 60" 1080p SXRD it looked like an N64 game.

"I get the feeling some people actually want to hate it. But I really don't think the hate is warranted. There is no effin' way in this life or the next Too Human can accurately be gauged a bad game. It's just not."

And that is the simple truth.People just want to hate on this game for no apparent reason and all the hate they have giving the game has already sealed the fate of Too Human because i don't see this game having any commercial success.

It might not end up a AAA title but it will be a good game none the less and a game worth owning because i know i will be purchasing this game come august 29th.

Lord Vader5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

"I'm sure there will be those out there who hate Too Human. I get the feeling some people actually want to hate it. But I really don't think the hate is warranted. There is no effin' way in this life or the next Too Human can accurately be gauged a bad game. It's just not. Period. What it will boil down to, I think, is whether it's a great game or merely a good one."

Excellent article.

Pornlord5787d ago

I'll be playing it, I don't know when, maybe after the price drop or buy it used. There will be a lot of copies returned being short as it is. It sounds good though, looking forward to it.

dachiefsman5787d ago

lol you did exactly what I was going to do!

Pornlord5787d ago

You can disagree all you want with me, 10 hours is not gonna satisfy my lust for an RPG, 10 hours is a renter RPG. That's it. You might be able to dress differently, but he speaks nothing of a lot of side quests to fill in more time, it's just a straight 10 hours. Now that's fine if that's what you want. But my attention span is longer than that, and I think if your gonna make an RPG, make it long and have a great story.

It looks fun, I'm not arguing that, just doesn't look like the end all of RPG's. I think it's a shame the rep it's gotten, my beef is not with it's rep, my beef is that he's played for 6 hours and is 60% through the game. That's bull. Even Enchanted arms took me almost 50 and that game doesn't look like half the game this one could be. IMO

More disagrees please!!!!

Superfragilistic5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Yeah when I read that earlier today *Meatlof voice* "it took the words right outta my mouth!"

Bubbles for you Green for pointing out the best quote as yet.

From what I've seen, and may have played ;), I share similar feelings to Matt and I feel the game is still on track for a Metacritic of 8 (+/- 5).

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but for those who like their tea it's one hell of a tasty cup! :)

EDIT: Given my tea analogy, if you're looking for a 50hr RPG story Pornlord I'd concur and say look for different leaves, but if you're looking for an RPG stat and loot fest this is the cuppa you'll want! (The story lasts 10hrs but the gameplay is easily upwards of 50hrs and if you want everything in terms of maxed levels and loot you're looking at more than double that!)

Pornlord5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

I hope you are right super, I would love for this game to be as good as it sounds. It is my cup of tea as you put it, I just hope it's 50 hours of gameplay. Maybe he's zipping through it, doing none of the side quests.

I suppose that I put myself in a reviewers shoes when I read a review. And if a game took me 10-12 hours to beat, that meant I left no stone unturned, took every path, and raped every monster nest on my way to the end. Then I'll take a different approach on my second playthrough. If what you say is true, then we can't trust any game reviewers scoring because they just try to get through the game as fast as possible. What is the point in that?? I'll give it a shot, and hope you are right, because it would be a waste of a good idea if you're wrong.

Edit: What we need is a game review site that actually has gamers and not journalists. They confuse me with the lengths of the games like this. I love RPG's. Maybe I'll start my own in depth game review website and pull a few intelligent members of this site to help write reviews... it's in my power to do so. Not a bad idea :)

Superfragilistic5786d ago (Edited 5786d ago )

You raise a good point about games journalism, and I think what this preview indicates is that the more time journalists/gamers spend with Too Human the more they get it and get out of it.

As you may have seen with the 1UP video preview they had played it through once but yet had no idea about the hidden rooms, runes and the combat/inventory depth.

My hope is that given the gold version should be in reviewer's hands at least two-three weeks in advance in the US and at least a month for European reviewers, enough time will pass for journalists to "get" Too Human and discover that hidden depth.

The story is great, but it's the loot/levelling/classes/combat/ co-op that will keep people coming back! Hopefully journalists will get to play through several times before posting reviews and quite frankly I wouldn't trust any reviewer's opinion who hasn't done so come release day. :)

Pornlord5786d ago

Agreed, you have swayed my opinion. I said I would give the game a shot but I will reserve my opinion until I play it myself (Hopefully a demo). Good points. Bubbles to you!

Some times some people just WANT to hate some games. Assassin's Creed was one. The moment IGN and 1UP gave it 7 (Seriously unfairly IMO), everyone started saying how "They knew it's a bad game" and how "they called it" even though hours ago they were fans and now are saying these even though haven't played the game by themselves. Granted, there were no negative previews of AC but still many people just wanted to hate it and attack Jade Raymond, it's producer.

Now they wanna hate Dennis Dyack and Too Human. People really need to hate and just play games for what they are. Also, I'm not saying that Too Human will be as great as Assassin's but it will at least be a good game. Merely good or really good is based on opinion.

meepmoopmeep5787d ago

a lot of games get hated and it's a shame.

i'm glad the game is shaping up to be really good.

Bnet3435787d ago

That also went for Ninja Gaiden 2.

TheColbertinator5787d ago

I liked Assassins Creed. It was repetitive but I did like the graphics, the story, the gameplay, the platforming, and the vibrance of the ancient cities. As for Too Human,we gotta wait and see.

MK_Red5787d ago

It's indeed a shame.

Kigmal, in NG2's case, at least people waited till reviews came out. TH is being punished without a single review.

As for Assassin's Creed, I agree with some repetitiveness but the game was insanely awesome. Love it.

ry-guy5787d ago

I liked AC as well. For some reason that game, at times, made me a bit motion sick. I don't know why, it could've been issues with framerates. Moments I liked for that game were stealth kills and diving off of tall buildings. Each time I dove off a tall building it gave me that stomach dropping feeling like jumping off a high dive.

My only critisms of the game were the stealth kill missions where you had to kill in the open guards. I got so frustrated with the one involving guards wandering around the market and the alertiveness of the guards seemed uncanny. I never understood the extreme hate for that game either.

In my book it was a solid 8/10, which isn't a bad thing at all.

Superfragilistic5787d ago

MK you get bubbles for being the second person today that's "took the words right outta my mouth!"

I've argued for weeks, from a much more informed and NDA tight position than most, that Assassins Creed is a much fairer comparison than the ridiculous Haze/Lair comparisons from those who want to hate. It's the perfect parallel for Too Human in a number of ways, but most prominently in its overhype, repetive gameplay and the subsequently divided opinion.

I'm reprinting something I've written elsewhere that explains my position. So please forgive the length. :)

"Although Assassins had beautiful animations and a next-gen polish for its time, it really divided people with it's shallow and repetitive gameplay and opinion-dividing story. Some loved it, some hated it. It got a metacritic of 80, with scores ranging from 5's to 10's. It didn't meet the hype for most, but it exceeded sales expectations considerably. And in the process created a viable franchise.

In Too Human's case whilst the presentation seems short of Assassins the wide array of art design of objects and settings may compensate. The gameplay appears repetitive, but so was Diablo's click-click as was Assassins. The saving grace for gameplay may be the hidden depth, but only if SK does more to actually tell reviewers and gamers about it! How about a tutorial or virtual combat practice mode? In regards to the story I feel it has the same draw as Assassins with a refreshing setting and interesting subtext. But I suspect it's length and ideas will be hit and miss with gamers much like AC. Co-op on the other hand looks to be a strong pulling power for PC dominated groups of Diablo/dungeon crawler/MMO gamers looking for loot/XP/levelling up experiences on a console.

In regards to critical reception I very much expect a similar experience to AC. A Metacritic around 80 (with a margin of error of +/- 5) seems entirely reasonable given initial reactions and the divisions in opinion.

Will it meet the hype? I think the previews have already answered that!

Will it be any good? I think that depends on what type of game you expect or want to play.

Will it sell? I think if it manages a Metacritic of 75+ and MS pushes a clearly defined story pitch and an action gaming experience with co-op then yes.

Being a dungeon crawler/action game, it's the only true loot fest on modern consoles and whilst it may alienate many in the shooter crowd it may well pull PC Diablo/MMO fans. The gameplay's action focus and its apparent pick up and play nature may well attract significant parts of the third person action crowd. The story also has some pull and as AC proved if the story creates interest amongst consumers (even if it eventually under-whelms), it can become a significantly important marketing tool, particularly amongst more story/RPG focused gamers. The European background of the story may well help generate additional interest in Europe as well.

My point is, is that Too Human should be a commercial success if it gets a decent critical reception. It is not an easily pigeon-holed game like Halo or Gears which have a very specifically targeted crowd, where gameplay, graphics and multi are king. Too Human has the UNCONFIRMED potential to sell on three very different fronts:

- a PC/Diablo stat and loot fest.
- a third person action and co-op title.
- a deep, complex RPG-esque story.

It's almost like a diversified stock portfolio, hedging its bets on more than one market. It could conceivably fail at one or two of the above and still sell well at the expense of reviews from gamers in the failed fronts.

But if I were a betting man, it really rests on whether the pick up and play action has wide enough appeal and is marketed as such. If it succeeds with that and gives players an interest in playing (story), it will be commercially viable (just like AC). And a new franchise will become much more likely."

ry-guy5787d ago

While reading your above post something occured to me that probably helped AC and which Too Human really needs: tv marketing.

I have seen zero tv spots for Too Human. Assassin's Creed had them littered every where on TV. It would be nice to see some Too Human promotion. That would help sales.

Superfragilistic5786d ago

Spot on!

This game needs to be promoted like hell. It fills a massive genre void in the console market (dungeon crawling action!) and has a great premise to back it up. I'm hoping that MS pulls their finger out and promotes this heavily post E3. You can expect a demo by the end of this month and we all hope a significant TV and print campaign - the game really has a lot of mainstream commercial potential that as yet appears unsupported and instead solely focused on the hardcore media.

FreedomReign5786d ago

AC was a tremendous game. Unrivaled in many, many ways. Although some of the tasks could be tedious, at no time did you HAVE to complete these tasks ad nauseum.

I am very concerned with the state of the industry, when FUN is not the end goal of the game (except for the Wii), where elitism is encouraged, and hype and scores are bought, don't even get me started on the fanboy garbage which is spewed every which way.

In this day and age of Gamefly there is no reason not to at least rent before vomitting an opinion on a forum.

I can't even hazard a guess as to how many AAA titles I have collecting dust on my shelves, and how many A titles regularly make the rounds in my PS3, and 360.

Anyway back to Crackdown.

MK_Red5786d ago

Agreed ry-guy though to me AC is more of a 9/10. I just love running in it's beautiful words and those leap of faiths indeed never got old.

Thanks Superfragilistic. Superb point about AC vs TH. They definitly need the tutorial or that virtual combat practice mode. As for score, I think it won't get anything more than 70. Too many negative previews on different sites means to many negative review. AC didn't have such previews.
As for PC / loot fans, I think there is a problem here. Most 360 gamers are not used to loot huntings of WOW or Diablo.
Hopefully the game will sell enough and we can see the whole story / trilogy.

FreedomReign, OMG, couldn't agree any more and I love Crackdown too. AC was indeed aboud fun of the freerunning and less about missions and other stuff and in that regard, it was PERFECT. I love both games to death but AC is my fave :)

because you think Too Human is awesome doesn't mean others don't have the right to dislike the game.

Too Human looks like it will be fun. It might be great or just good enough.

MK_Red5787d ago

Agreed but the problem is that many people are simply HATING this game based on some previews. Even from the worst view, the game has average to ok graphics and gameplay and gets so much hate as if it's Hour of Victory 2 or a 50 Cent game...

Previewers are also pretty harsh. How come crappy games like Turning Point: Fall of Liberty gets decent previews but some of the previews for Too Human are like super negative reviews? Like or dislike is a personal thing but I have a strong feeling that some people WANT to hate Too Human. If you go into a movie theatre wanting to hate a film, you'll end up hating it no matter how good or bad it really is.

dachiefsman5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Yea you can have an opinion, but most people actually play the game before flaming it. I thought HAZE looked good actually until I played the demo, even at that I still thought that game was reviewed to low.

Some people on this site see one thing posted by some random person and use it as law. Even if I have an opinion I usually try to keep it constructive instead of critical. The world already has to many critics.

green5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Please read this preview from AnalogueHype and tell me if they have played the game?

Isn't it obvious now that some people just want to hate the game?

I am currently tracking the game and i can still dig up one or two other articles on Too Human that are like the one from AnalogueHype.

MK_Red5787d ago

Fun fact: I'm one of five people to have completed Too Human and actually liked it. It should be noted that the other four ended up in mental institutions....sadly.

excaliburps1419d ago

I completed it and kinda liked it. Controls were iffy but overall, I dug it. Shame Dyack was crazy. xD

IanTH1419d ago

I have never played this, mostly because I didn't own an Xbox prior to a few months ago Def. will check this out

darthv721419d ago

It certainly has a cool story and its a good game. it was just marred by long development time and kind of egotistical creator.

Looper1419d ago

Hey!! I was told survivors had all signed an NDA! I'm telling!

Kribwalker1419d ago

i really liked this one too. Always wished for a sequel, but sadly i don’t see it in the cards

excaliburps1419d ago

Yeah, it had a solid story and game mechanics. I remember the controls weren't smartly implemented, and every time you respawned, the animation was so long.

Fantangoooo1419d ago

I can't count the number of times I finished this game gridding for gear. Weird control but I liked it

Neonridr1419d ago

Poopmist1419d ago

Me and my friend beat it so many times. I got the best armor mathematically possible in it. Great game imo but their needed to be more tutorials on how runes work. The one that spawns singularities upon hitting someone was cash.

DerfDerf1419d ago

I actually really enjoyed it.

RamRod881419d ago

I beat it too. The controls were weird, but once I got use to them it was okay. I found the story to be actually half decent. Too bad there wasn't a sequel because I really believe if they have fixed the issues the first game had(controls, camera, etc), it could have been a great series.

HyperMoused1419d ago

I though it was great too, yay us

Anomander1419d ago

Beat it as well. it had a good story line. Overall it was decent.

glennhkboy1419d ago

I remember that I played the 1st stage. The control was so bad that I couldn't force myself to continue.

morganfell1419d ago

Fun fact...you're actually one of six :) That game was the reason I kept an Xbox 360 running until they released the very last B/C titles and it was among them.

Chronicle7801418d ago

I thought the game was ok, clunky but ok. Every time I go back to play it though it takes 20 minutes for the controls to 'click' again. Pity most of the advanced combos and controls aren't listed anywhere in the game.
