I love this show and I love the Dreamcast, it lives on in the hearts of many gamers and developers are still making (some) games for it. If only Sega would join the console making race again.

I love these to, and it's pretty interesting to see SEGA's history and how they are now. Seems their partnership with Sony was shortlived, though with Microsoft they worked with them for years, which TBH begs the question of what their relationship is now considering that they do PS exclsuives, but have no Xbox exclusives (least I think)

bouzebbal3422d ago

yeah, i remember there was a big love between Xbox and SEGA back in the days and rumors of playing DC games on Xbox. Many exclusive deals have been signed and xbox got SEGA exclusive sequels to some of their best franchises: Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi 3... and of course a Shenmue 2 port. As a PS2 owner at that time i was jealous and i ended up buying Xbox to play these great games (and also DOA 3).

hkgamer3422d ago

their relationship with ms hasnt been for that long.
they had a windows ce option for the dreamcast, but no developers wanted to develop games for the windows ce model. think it cost more.

ms definitely got interested into making consoles with their sega partnership. big sega games went onto the xbox, gc had a few and sony barely got anything. but as sega knew from experience. sony was the console selling more and they kinda had no choice but to work with them aswell.

IceKoldKilla3420d ago

Don't they have a strong relationship with Nintendo now? For years actually. I see a lot of Sonic games on Nintendo consoles alongside crossovers with Mario and other Nintendo characters.

Concertoine3422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

I actually knew about this one. Honestly I think MS should've bought Sega instead of Rare. They would've had a much better chance in japan with help from sega, and sega had a ton of talent back then. If they got bought up they wouldn't have had to literally halve their workforce in the coming years.

Im surprised they didnt bring up bleemcast. For those that dont know, it lets you play enhanced versions of Gran turismo 2, Tekken 3, and Metal gear solid on the dreamcast. It's actually the best way to play all three games, as it gets rid of all the pixelation present on the ps1. The controller isnt as good for those games as the dualshock, but there's also adapters to let you play DC games with the dualshock.

hkgamer3422d ago

im not 100% sure of the timeline, but sega was almost bankrupt at that time. if it wasnt for sammy and their pachinko machines they would have went under.

rare is a tiny game studio. totally different to buying a masive company.

Concertoine3422d ago

But MS still payed 375 million bucks for Rare, hardly a tiny game studio.

stonecold33422d ago

hope sega make another console

2pacalypsenow3422d ago

No thanks we dont need 4 consoles in the market

caseh3422d ago

Taking into account you count the Wii U as a competitor, it's more like two.

Army_of_Darkness3422d ago

Sony would over-shadow any new Sega console due to the PlayStation's popularity and Sega's bad console history... Sega is better off just making games for all the platforms.

caseh3422d ago

@Tiqila

Depends on if you see it as a viable choice, personally I don't. Hence two consoles.

Sega needs to start making better games first.

IMO

hkgamer3422d ago

totally no need for that. with their track record it just wouldnt be succesful enough.

does sega have any games/series that even sell?

the only reason i want them around is to make yakuza games and maybe make give shenmue another chance.

Klonoa-dreamtraveler3422d ago

i would want one too but with the people in charge at sega now would make a very poor attempt at it then use a excuse saying people aren't interested in it when really they seriously need to be fired cause everything they touch is half-assed done now where they either ruin a ip or hide it in the dark for years. though that cant have 4 consoles in the market sad excuse is annoying to hear now.

FlyingFoxy3422d ago

@Army_of_Darkness

Bad console history? Master System was sucessful, Mega Drive was successful, Dreamcast was a good system and only got support ended early due to people being hyped for PS2 and many ignoring the DC, even though it had better games than the PS2 at launch!

Sega only made 2 mistakes, biggest was the 32x, the Mega CD was a failure but it still had a handful of good games with kick ass music.

A motion controller for the Dramcast!? uh oh...was this before the supposed youtube of Sony making a motion controller? Because if so this really throws a wrench in the who did what first argument.

Also, Fable was suppose to be a Dreamcast game? Wow, I love these videos...so many Holy Crap moments.

caseh3422d ago

Nintendo made the first motion controller, well...the first one that didn't really work:

MasterCornholio3422d ago

Well it helped AVGN beat dark link.

So it at least has some functionality.

;)

Love how you posted the pic from that movie.

caseh3422d ago

Haha, I think he also managed to land the plane on the carrier in Top Gun with it as well. :D

Concertoine3422d ago

Actually it was made by Mattel. Nintendo just licensed it.

Personally i dont care who made what first... i hate how this site gets all worked up about who introduced the crappy motion gimmick first.

Fireseed3422d ago

To this day I still consider the Dreamcast as my favorite console of all time, simply because almost every game made for the thing was absolutely amazing. Plus it fits into those sweet spot years of nostalgia.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss35d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg33d ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast35d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

gold_drake34d ago

shining force.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle45d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it. I didn't even know there was a war going on between these companies but I do remember thinking why I can't play Sonic cartridge on Nintendo or Mario on Sega :D

FinalFantasyFanatic45d ago

I had the Genesis and the Saturn, also had the SNES and 64, I never got a Dreamcast for some reason, but I never saw one in the stores either.
