Sony's Hirai: On "exclusives"

Speaking to SPOnG regular Steve Boxer, on the semi-official Sony PlayStation blog recently, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO, Kaz Hirai has taken a reality check on the idea of exclusives.

this is what i have been saying for long time, not all countries in the world have high speen internet, even some dont have internet at all except by dial-up, so DD will never replace blue ray, and his point to include all things in a blue ray is the best idea!

Just to comment on your comment, blu ray as yet to replace dvd so i think you're getting a head of yourself there and as for Downloads never replacing disk format, i have to disagree, the trend has already started with music, woolworths have already started to discontinue cd's completely as their is no market for them anymore, within 15 years my guess is that disk format will be dead

UK broadband is currently at an average of about 2Mb, many are still on dial up or 512kb/s and a small minority are on 8MB-16-MB.

Digital downloads may work for music, but for movies it's a pipe dream.

blu-ray haven't even replaced dvd so i think you're getting ahead of yourself thinking downloads will replace disk format.

do you realize how long it would take to download HD movies? i live in Chicago and have a pretty fast connection and i still hate downloading movies. it slows down everything else from web surfing to online game playing.

most of the people in the world don't even have access to a "fast-connection" and a large amount of people that do, have limitations to how much they can download within a period of time.

i can't see downloads becoming major until fiber optic lines become the norm worldwide (about 20-30 years out). but hey, everyone must have a dream.

Based from what I read from one of the articles posted here in N4G, "timed" exclusives (e.g. Bioshock) are ideal for both concerned parties; in this case Sony and MS. Paying a large sum for the "full" exclusivity of a game is almost always a gamble, for the game might not be a hit as it was initially hoped for.

Paying for full exclusivity for a sure-hit, such as MGS4, is a different case. For instance, Sony would benefit from the increase in PS3 sales from people who want to play MGS4 but haven't bought a next-gen console yet, or people who want to play MGS4, but own a 360 or a Wii.

seems to be doing really well without having paid for the exclusives they have right now. However, it would be interesting to see them buy up exclusivity or timed exclusivity on some of the more major titles (GTA series, DMC series, Street Fighter series, Soul Calibur series, etc.). Getting exclusive rights to some of the better-known games would prove vital this generation since they are so closely in competition with Microsoft now.

Yep.. just look at GTA4 Sales. Sony didn't pay 50 million to secure DLC... and it sold just fine. People buy the ps3. nuff said.

Guys i can see what you are saying and at current broadband speeds you are both correct about the time it takes to download dvd files, how ever i'm sure you are both aware that scientists have created a new super broadband which can download 17 movies per minute, although its in its early experimental days, its only a matter of time before its available to the masses. Rememeber it was only 15 years ago when dial up was in its first stages, and look how far we have come since then

the infrastructure that took fifteen years to build up is mostly built on a preexisting infrastructure. Copper lines were already in place well before the internet was. This new internet you speak of is based on a FiOs infrastructure. How long do you suppose it will take to build this infrastructure from the ground up?

strange thing is the peeps who complain about game installs and the time it takes seem to luuurv DD. Maybe they think its instant or something.

The reason MP3's made the jump, is because people really liked the fact that they could take their music anywhere without a cd player.

They found something convenient where they could put a lot of songs in a small system that they could carry with them always.

Now movies???? Yeah I see people downloading a 1,000 HD movies and walking around with little HDTV's everywhere.

getting extra content on games is a good way to go for sony,microsoft are stuck with dvd ,if they can get developers to add extra levels or behind the scenes footage etc this would make a big deal on what multiplat version the consumer would buy,can,t see this costing sony much either,ie bioshock all dlc free now,its down to sony to push developers for this as dlc is already complete before the game comes out most times,they can always offer ms the dlc via xbox live,but sony would have it from the get go showing the short coming of dvd

I believe that Kaz will lead the playstation into the right direction as well. The reality checks is very much necessary for them to realize that the console battlefield this time is very much different. They're behind the Wii and the 360 is holding it's own. They cant stick to the old ways of believing people will buy the PS3 just because it's a Playstation name brand.

It's like if BMW keeps releasing the same car with no new features, it will lose to other car manufacturers that keep on pushing like Lexus and Mercedes.

However with the release of MGS4 and many new titles in the next coming months, I think any new prospective PS3 owner and current PS3 owners will definitely be satisfied once again by the Playstation name.

And don't show me Home again until its got a solid, set in stone, never to be delayed again release date!!
