HAZE Review by "Import Tuner Magazine"

First-person shooters can all seem the same after awhile, so it's great when a game comes along that changes it up a bit, giving gamers a new experience. Ubisoft is one of the leading producers of first-person shooter games and takes it up a notch with their exclusive PS3 title Haze.

I think xbox owners have plenty of FPS to play.

Haze isnt even that great, I played the demo, character models look last gen, and the whole nectar thing is just plain stupid, I tried playing without using it and that sucked too.

Haze is not something to wave around in front of fanboys, they would probably just laugh at the mention of it. I even see Sony Fanboys saying it was terrible, and thats saying something.

Same thing happens to me, and probably everyone else. I think its just because the PS3 doesn't have enough memory. There are a lot of websites I can't even access on the PS3 because it doesn't have enough memory.

As the fans may recall, Free Radical had previously released a demo of their upcoming Haze FPS for the Sony PlayStation 3.

While the demo answered a lot of our question regarding how the game will handle, some of the players may have noticed that it didn't feel like it was running at a full 720p resolution (though it was running at fixed 30 fps). It felt closer to 1024 x 576, which falls short of the HD mark.

Free Radical creative lead Derek Littlewood further confirmed that the game will indeed be running at the aforementioned 1024 x 576 res, citing the studio's prioritizing of smoother framerates over visual quality. Ubisoft had previously stated in their game FAQ at the PlayStation Blog that Haze would be running at 720p. As Littlewood elaborated during an interview:

We prioritise a nice smooth framerate over a different res. Personally, I don’t really buy the whole thing. People did the same with Call of Duty (4), they did the same with Halo (3), and they say with those games 'It’s not running at true HD!’ And it’s like, I don’t care. If the game looks good and it runs smoothly, those are the important things to me.

As a point of clarification, the PlayStation 3 will upscale Haze to 720p, although 1024 x 576 will remain as the game's native resolution. Littlewood further explained that they made the decision near the end of Haze's development.

For the guys who may be feeling a little let down by this update, Littlewood suggests they will want to sit down and play the game first before making any sort of judgment. After all, Haze's experience is summed up by far more than just its visuals. You won't have to wait too long either - Haze is expected to hit the PS3 by tomorrow, May 20. Not to downplay this review, but first off... it's coming from what I'm assuming (without actually browsing through anything but this review) is a car site that also has a videogame section? That's like these weird ass Chinese "Gourmet Water" stores in Los Angeles that also sell cellphones. WTF? Second, this 'review' doesn't even sound like a review. In fact, it sounds like the press release and the editor doesn't even right about it in first person as if he's played it.

I've played the demo and I sort of have mixed feeling. The demo was cool, but it didn't leave me overwhelmed. Granted, I've seen a lot of videos and pics that also suggest there's some vehicle control and good multiplayer, so there's probably a lot the demo didn't divulge for the sake of not spoiling the game. So we'll have to wait and see.

I was surprised though that given the fact that this game I thought was expected to release on the 20th didn't get reviewed today as most of these bigger companies usually review games the day before release. So, it sort of has me wondering if the review dates that they were allowed to do were pushed back at the request of Ubisoft until the game releases because the game is NOT as good as they'd like you to think it will be and they want you to buy it before you see the scores. Granted, I could just be blowing things out of proportion, but I was just expecting a review today so it was sort of odd to not see it.

The credibility of a review will depend on the how intelligent, logical and objective the reasoning is in it - and if it is consistent with the average reviews out there.

So lets see the reasoning and the average review.

I don't expect HAZE to get flawless reviews, but I think that HAZE is a solid game title. It's nowhere near on the level of Resistance 2 and it's definantly not anywhere near the level Killzone 2, but I think that this game is worth checking out at least.

Ubisoft wouldn't have delayed this game and put so much effort into the game and making it a PS3 exclusive if they didn't plan on it being a pretty good game.

Even though "Import Tuner" isn't a gaming website, sometimes it's just nice to get reviews by average everyday people that aren't involved in the gaming industry.... Sometimes I think the best people to judge or review a game are the people that aren't in the gaming industry.
