Ok simply tell me why kinect is a mistake? I simply don't want two ps4 on the market, diversity is needed. If you ask I think kinect is a brillant idea without question, matter of time when people can start seeing its potential.

Kurylo3d-- you need space for voice commands, really ? Also it's call XBOX 1 meaning a all in one machine, it's a multimedia device. I don't understand you n4g folks at all... Kinect being a gimmick haha, so that makes the PsEye what then ?

Kurylo3d3847d ago (Edited 3847d ago )

Because its a gimmick. That adds nothing to video games. It wants to be virtual reality.. but it ends up falling very short. Its market is limited because you need enough space in your living room to use it.. and its market is limited because you can only make certain types of games with it.

This thing should be marketed toward indy developers as motion capture... which many are starting to use it for that on their pcs.

@above..

never said pseye wasnt a gimmick. That thing is worse then a gimmick its trash not even suitable for developers doing motion cap or 3d scanning. But still doesnt make kinnect any less then a gimmick. If you want voice commadns use a microphone.. why do i need to add $100 extra to the console? Voice commands have been done for ages.. kinnect isnt bringing that. lol.

Imalwaysright3847d ago

The only different thing about kinect is that instead of using a controller you're waving your arms and legs because its software is exactly the same that we've been having for years with regular controllers, aside from a few dance games. There is absolutely nothing revolutionary or different about its software. As a gamer I can 100% live without that kind of diversity.

pompombrum3847d ago

How kinect 2 turns out remains to be seen but the original kinect was extremely underwhelming and was made even worse by Microsoft promising so many things for it. It wouldn't be fair to call kinect 2 a mistake just yet but the higher price point with slightly inferior hardware doesn't exactly fill me with confidence at this stage.

harrisk9543847d ago

The Kinect and the PS Eye are "gimmicks"... the difference is that Kinect is being forced on people and is a direct reason for the XB1 to be $100 more than the PS4. With the less expensive tech under the hood, MS might have been able to undercut Sony on price had the Kinect not been mandatory.

InTheLab3847d ago

A matter of time before people see its potential was said about the first Kinect which was fine because it was optional and now look at it. If your casual family just bought a kinect for $150 a year ago, why would they pay $500 for more kinect and promises of potential.

Eventually you need a return on investment and so far, kinect has failed on every level that's not dance central.

So yes it's a mistake. It's the reason why I'm not getting an X1 and the reason why those that are will have to pay out the a$$ for one.

mightyhokie3847d ago

KiLL,
I have enjoyed my Kinect. Sure, there have been times when I give a command a couple of times, and even (rarely) where I give commands and end up blurting for it to lick my butt because it won't listen. But it is veeeeeery convenient for me to just say 'xbox pause', 'xbox play', and stuff like that when watching tv. And I've generally had success at that. My kids love the Sesame Street stuff which they interact with.
So if Kinect 2.0 is as good as they say then I'll be happy. MS has a lot of opportunity there for gamers and entertainment alike. I think they are looking at the future. People say it is a gimmick. I don't think so. Look at all the products coming out now with voice commands. Is that really going to go away? I don't think so.

If people don't want it then get a PS4. I think in 5 years or so with the cloud and kinect improvements and all that MS will be sitting pretty. Just my opinion. I don't have a crystal ball. But I have enjoyed mine and I realllllly look forward to my x1 and not having to have 4 different remote controls.

malokevi3847d ago

The person in the article, who has actually had hands-on time with the device, is singing it's praises. Meanwhile, a bunch of N4G people who both haven't tried the device and don't intend on buying an Xbox say that it's a useless gimmick and that the hardware/software is the same.

hmmmm......

b00mFargl33847d ago

Remember, haters are gonna hate. Most of the people when I launched the ps4 last night were asking if they could buy a playstation eye. Which is a half assed kinect. I got some hands on time and it has some cool things, but it's nowhere close. With the sony fanboys calling it a mistake and then purchasing the eye just shows how much bias there is toward one console without even looking into any benefits. I love the ps4 and it is a sexy beast, but its trying to go after something SIMILAR to Xbox.

If you are buying a PS4, I am sure you think it is.

ChrisW3847d ago

Of course a troll with 1 bubble like NeoTribe thinks it's a mistake.

Kryptix3847d ago (Edited 3847d ago )

Of course because if you're buying an Xbox One, you're forced to like it and use it or it's money wasted.

Plus the people buying a PS4 have the option to get the PS Eye but most of them think it's a gimmick, too.

Every time I read an Xbot's comment, I laugh a little from their broken logic... In this case, why can't you accept that people say motion sensing is a gimmick in general. People don't bash the Kinect, just the idea of waving your arms when using controllers is much more comfortable.

lastofgen3847d ago

Not for me.
I plan to use it to its fullest capabilities, especially with ui navigation.
And knowing everyone that buys an xbox one will have the same experience is good to know.

ZeroX98763847d ago

it's not really a mistake, there's a market for the kinect too.

BUT, bundling it with every X1 was a mistake for me. I like to buy my accessories if I'm going to use it only. I'm not buying the PS4 camera right away, why?

budget reasons for some, more or less useless for me (except streaming online :D)

Is Kinect 2.0 a mistake..... Not really

Making people pay for it when they don't want it.... Yes!

come_bom3847d ago

Yep... Kinect 2.0 should really be optional, and not forced with every console. Another stupid mistake by Microsoft.

mhunterjr3847d ago

No one is MAKING anyone do anything.

ChrisW3847d ago

Agree! If you don't want Kinect 2.0, then don't buy an Xbox One!

RonRico3847d ago

If you want an XBone, then yes they are.

mhunterjr3847d ago (Edited 3847d ago )

@RonRico

If you don't the kinect, then you don't want the xb1. It's part of the package.
Why is no one complaining that MS is forcing you to buy a $500 HDD, or a headset, or a controller? Because they are part of the standard package.

Kingthrash3603847d ago

thing is the kinect made a weaker console more expensive and as of now still a gimmik...its like what if ps3 charged for its 3d capabilities...

MysticStrummer3847d ago

"If you don't the kinect, then you don't want the xb1."

There are many people who want an XB1 but don't want Kinect. No one is complaining about those other things because those things are proven to be needed for a quality gaming experience. Kinect still hasn't been proven to be necessary, therefore it is a gimmick, just like PS Eye.

upgraded gimmick obviously, not that I want to beat a dead horse. A gimmick MS believe can achieve the success the likes of Wii!!! hooray!!

yarbie10003847d ago

People use the word gimmick without even really knowing the definition I believe: "trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business"

Anyone who has watched the navigation videos and seen the controls using Kinect can see that this is useful, and therefore not a gimmick.

strickers3847d ago

Matter of opinion . Many of its "features" like hand waving menus, are less effecient than buttons . Voice control can be dine in other ways. Gimmick.

MysticStrummer3847d ago

For gaming it is a gimmick. It's a cool, futuristic looking way to navigate menus, but it's not the only game in town for that. Newer smart TVs do it, and there are external devices that allow it to be done also.

Gazondaily3847d ago

I don't think so. Not yet anyway. We need something to differentiate the X1 from the PS4. If utilised correctly, it could become a really good piece of companion hardware for the console.

I think its quite exciting that every console comes bundled with it. Lets hope it works well.

infectedaztec3847d ago

Agree 100%.

The UI was designed for it.

It doesn't have to intrude on games unless its tasteful - for example head tracking in BF4.

Apart from the obvious power step up. Its the biggest difference between the new gen and current gen

Kingthrash3603847d ago

i agree the x1 needs somthing to differentiate yje x1 from ps4...but the kinect isnt it. ps4 has the cam and while weaker it has voice commands, eye tracking (announced and shown last night) facial recognition ect. and who's to say sony wont patch more. yeah the kinect is differnt but not such a differance that people are like hey, im gettin x1 because the kinect is stronger than pscam. in fact thay are saying im getting a ps4 because its more powerful because of their first party games because its cheaper.
ms should have spent money makeing making more first party studio's. spending money and forcing the widely unpopulaer kinect on customers has hurt them more that anything.
i understand you lke the kinect but the majority of gamers dont want it or would rather have it seperate for later purchase. in business you give to majority what they want then you do the stuff for the minority for better profits...ms has done it backwards with the x1.

cyhm31123847d ago

the whole thing about xbone is a mistake, whether people deny it or not.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies2d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX3d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody3d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_3d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie1d 15h ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly2d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga2d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit2d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

....you know it takes people to program the AI.... right? It isnt like it is sentient. We haven't reach skynet level of situation or anywhere close to the matrix just yet.

That's next Thursday.

Einhander19726d ago (Edited 6d ago )

It takes a people to program the AI then that AI is used for who knows how many games eliminating countless jobs which only grows as AI is used for more and more game creation functions.

What you're saying is so ridiculously short sighted and truly larking any kind of understanding and foresight.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead7d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan7d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl7d ago

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.

Microsoft's Activision subsidiary announced today that it is opening a new game development studio to take advantage of the huge talent pool growing in Poland. It'll be the second Activision studio based in the region, joining Infinity Ward Krakow, although this studio is, in fact, not working on Call of Duty.
