WoW Gamer gets divorced due to addiction

World of Warcraft is leaving in its wake an increasing list of casualties. Even though she's never played the game, 28 year-old Jocelyn is one of the fallen. A well-spoken California resident, she divorced her husband of six years after he developed a crippling addiction to the smash online RPG.

"He would get home from work at 6:00, start playing at 6:30, and he'd play until three a.m. Weekends were worse - it was from morning straight through until the middle of the night," she told Yahoo! Games in an interview. "It took away all of our time that we spent together. I ceased to exist in his life."

Jocelyn had been friends with her ex-husband Peter since the age of 13, but it took only nine months for her marriage to collapse. "I bought the game for him for Christmas 2004, when it first came out. By May we had our first serious discussion about where our marriage was going, and by September I had moved out," she said.

Peter's domestic duties also suffered. He stopped paying bills, she says, and refused to do his share of the housework. Jocelyn doesn't hesitate to cite Warcraft as the main reason for her divorce and remains emotional about its impact on her marriage. "I'm real, and you're giving me up for a fantasy land. You're destroying your life, your six-year marriage, and you're giving it up for something that isn't even real."

blaming the game is like...oh I don't know to be honest. games adiction is pretty real in china an places like that so health warnings ought to be given on box set or maybe in game warnings suggesting you take break after...i don't know...six hours? six hours is a long time.

This story has happened many, many times. WoW gets a lot of blame, but all men can lose their loved ones if they don't control their addictions towards any game.

Interesting... everyone is blaming the gentleman. Addictions happen for a reason and more often than not... it is not due to one deciding factor. It appears that only one side of the story is being portrayed... and in my experience, when there is a split in a relationship... it usually is not a nice split with more oft than not both parties badmouthing the other. I would venture to guess that these two had problems beforehand and they progressively got worse and the game provided an outlet. Games can become very engulfing if you let them just as with anything else in life... but to blame the game as their reason for breaking up is silly. Just as with how all gamers were enraged when that silly lady-"shrink" made that accusation with Mass Effect without even seeing any footage of the game, ... people should not judge others based on one persons view. Who knows... he could be an idiot after all.

Am sorry to hear that at least there are plenty of other nice guys out there that are gamers that would rather spend the time with their girl than games.

yea sometimes video games are crack especially computer games. I'm happy that i was able to understand how rediculous it is wasting all your time playin a game that means nothing. You cant really accomplish anything in life by spending it playin video games. I played Diablo 2 for my whole freshman year in highschool and i regret doing it but at the time I was to blind to see what I was missing... this guy needs to realize that a commitment made to your wife under the eyes of God no matter what religion you are is far more important ... one day this guy is going to wake up and say "what the F*** have I done"
