The Best Games Make Their Predecessors Seem Obsolete

Some games make their predecessors seem super-dated; others might make players wish they were playing one of the titles in their back catalog. A running trend among gaming's biggest hits is that they tend to set the standards for their franchise (or genre).

He was talking about Nintendo games but lets go over to recent PlayStation games like inFAMOUS. infamous 2 made it for me that I can't go back to the first one and I absolutely love it! inFAMOUS 2 just made the best thing better. Uncharted and Killzone is a different story to some.

Oldman1004373d ago

Resistance could be included there with Uncharted and Killzone. The coop mode in R2 provided some of the most fun I've had with the franchise. Yet it was nowhere to be seen in the sequel. :(

Y_51504373d ago

Yeah I'm sorry I knew someone would mention that respectful series. I haven't really played Resistance other than the demos so I can't really judge yet.

MerkinMax4373d ago

Gonna have to disagree with you. I could play Uncharted 1 and Resistance 1 today without them feeling obsolete. Graphics improve of course, but they nailed gameplay, story and their respected worlds.

Xof4373d ago

No, the BEST games are timeless, ageless--never obsolete. Ocarina of Time, Homeworld, Age of Empires, Freespace, Final Fantasy VII, Suikoden 2, Shadow of the Colossus... these games will never become obsolete.

Ever.

Good games make their predecessors seem obsolete, but merely being good is not enough to be a classic. Merely good games are doomed to the oblivion of forgotten memory.

Case in point: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Sometimes I wonder why some people and media pundits even bother mentioning GTAIII at all. That's not to say it was a bad game or it didn't make much of an impact upon release, but SA just went above and beyond it. There's a reason why most people regard SA as the ultimate sandbox experience not just the ultimate GTA game.

attilayavuzer4373d ago

Jesus how about Just Cause 2 compared to the first? Talk about compressing shit into diamonds.

glennco4373d ago

but SA really isnt that different from 3 when you look at 3 compared to 2 (or anything else at the time). personally i prefer VC to either of them. i finished 3 and VC and got bored halfway through SA and havent bothered since. GTAIII was an awesome effort, i IMO i don't think they have done enough since then. i want a living city or at least fooled into believing it is. the popup and vehicle vanishing just seems to get worse and worse with each new GTA.

Super Mario 64 DS: Remakes Done Right

Super Mario 64 DS was offered as a launch title for the Nintendo DS, a remake of the classic platform game with a few original tricks.

Chard17d ago

Not with those D-pad controls

CDbiggen17d ago

Needs more appreciation. I never had an N64 so this was what I played. Sure the Yoshi hat mechanic at first is a slog but you unlock Mario and the others for real and then it takes off. Personally I never had an issue with the controls. Can't forget the mini games and the 4 player rumble over download play.

kevco3317d ago

Indeed, as stated in the article there were tonnes of control options and very much a 'take whatever you like, leave the rest' attitude to most of the game's extras.

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.

If they ever did I hope they would add onto it, there's so much you could do with Princess Peach's castle alone

roadkillers101d ago

Or just make the Mario 128... the cancelled sequel that sounded amazing (or was it just an amazing tale).

fr0sty101d ago

Funny that after all these years, we still use 64 bit CPUs, so it wouldn't make sense to call it that.

fr0sty101d ago

Yeah, a straight remake doesn't sound good to me. Same formula, but different game.

Number1TailzFan102d ago

Each level is pretty small today in the original game, I don't like huge levels but I think they could be at least 2x bigger, or close to it and more of them, with more things to do.

They could do a mix of having open levels and more linear ones like in 3D World or Land, I doubt they will do that but it would make a change.

Neonridr101d ago

I mean Odyssey's levels weren't massive, but requiring you to do different things in each world is what made the levels feel bigger than they were.

ZeekQuattro102d ago

I'd prefer a Oydessey 2 or Galaxy 3. Besides the DS
game was a Mario 64 remake complete with more playable characters, stages, bosses and muti player content.

Cacabunga101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

I did not like Odyssey i found the idea of ot lame.. i find it boring to just look for moons instead of exploring and enjoying the levels. Let’s not talk about the extremely repetitive and ridiculously easy bosses. Level design is so meh most of the time. Galaxy 2 is a far better game so Galaxy 3 anytime!!!

TiredGamer101d ago

Agreed. I enjoyed Odyssey for a while, but it quickly became very formulaic where each level felt like a checklist of things to do with WAY too many moons to find. The Galaxy series were the best, as they took some of what made 64 great and juiced it up perfectly.

Lolly101d ago

Yes! Let's release an almost 30 year old game to kick off the next generation for Nintendo...
I'm over re-releases...FEED ME NEW MARIO!
