N4G Contest - Day 20: The Winner Is

For information on the "20 Days of..." contest, please see https://n4g.com/user/blogpo...

***

Congratulations to SegaGamer, our nineteenth day winner.

***

On the twentieth and final day, the question we have for you is "What is your Game of the Year and why?"

Oh, and bonus for everyone today, each valid entry actually counts for three entries towards the grand prize. And we will be allowing responses up until the end of the 25th of December. Good luck!

God of War was great, but the annoying camera did bother me. Spider-Man was fun, but man, those side quests were not good. Red Dead Redemption 2 was amazing for open world immersion, but man, way too realistic with the travel and side quest stuff.

Why couldn't these three have a baby and produce the best?

But, for me, the one game that was the most fun and tickled my favorite elements of gaming was actually Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

I'm hearing a lot of moaning there. But, let me reassure you, this is a game that has turned into something completely made for people like me. I know it's not for everyone, but it is for me. It's an open world that focuses on exploring but not dealing with tons of time sink travelling. It's got a good amount of RPG mechanics from leveling up, unique equipment, skills, and player-focused decision making. More importantly, I enjoyed almost every single minute of the game. It was fun. I put more hours into Odyssey than I did Destiny 2 this year and I didn't think that would happen with any game, especially not a single-player one.

The game isn't the best at any one thing, but everything it put in was extremely enjoyable for me and for me, this year, that's what mattered the most. It was a hard year to find something as engrossing for me even though there were many great games.

Red dead redemption 2 just shows R* are miles ahead of anyone story/graphics got it all.

God of War has better graphics than RDR2 and i highly doubt the story is miles ahead of The Last of Us. In fact, i'd argue that God of War has better visuals, art design, combat, and voice acting to name a few. Story is pretty objective, but God of War had an excellent one. God of War also dared to innovate upon the tride and true formula that originally made the franchise such a powerful success, whereas, R* just used the same old formula with little in the way of true evolution or meaningful change. R* employed the same old clunky control scheme with auto lock shooting and sprint button mashing. The same tired mini map from GTA, archaic lip syncing, average in-game character models, and a broken GTAO inspired Online. Obviously R* has the best open world tech and their horse riding is top notch. Their games are huge, impressive spectacles of open world design, but some things are getting long in the tooth and it might be time to use that 500 man team and 200 million dollar budget towards a little innovation.

Hard disagree. But that's the beauty of opinions.

Can’t delete or edit my comment so just count this one lol.

Hollow Knight was my game of the year. Yes, it released on PC in 2017, but it also ‘just’ released on Switch this year. That was the version I played.

This game is a f*king masterpiece. I was so skeptical because I initially thought it looked “cheap”, but mannnnn was I wrong. This game is so damn beautiful. The combat is flawless, the lore is deep, the aesthetic, atmosphere etc. the MUSIC. It all just looks and feels so good.

I was so engrossed in Hollow Knight’s world man. Something that hasn’t happened for a while. Since something like Bloodborne. I wish Hollow Knight got a AAA type of push. But yeah, phenomenal game. Classic level.

Would be my GOTY this year of it hadn't released last year. It may be a 2D indie game, but it's just that good.

I played it on PS4 for the first time this year and I think I'd agree that it's my game of the year too. Hauntingly beautiful music, perfect gameplay and fantastic graphics. One of those games that only people who've played it can understand how great it really is.

God of war. It gave an emotional story of an matured Kratos and Atreus is such a good character and companion in the game. The music is so fantastic and I have it on my phone. Leviathan Axe is so awesome to use!

Personally i loved the camera how its "one shot" and never cuts during the game.

God of War was my game of the year and it had my vote. I was torn between it and Spiderman for so long.

The last two weeks however I've been glued to Divinity Original Sin 2 and it's all I can think about gaming wise. It has completely pulled me away from Red Dead. Only because I haven't spent enough time with it am I going to stick with God of War but a bit longer at it and I could have said Divinity 2

Former Activision studio Toys for Bob partners with Xbox to publish its first game as an indie

Former Activision studio Toys for Bob partners with Xbox to publish its first game as an indie. This is something of a homecoming, as Microsoft owns Activision.

Very very early in development. Still, fantastic news!

Let´s GO!!!

I guess.

How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )

At least it wouldn't be MS of all ppl destroying them.

MS really should let go Tango go like they did TFB here.

darthv723h ago(Edited 3h ago)

one was under Bethesda (Tango) the other under Activision (TFB). Clearly each one handled the separations of their subordinates differently.

"How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )"

Perhaps because Zenimax and ABK handles such matters differently based on their own internal policies as "independent" publishers.

Whoever, chances are it´s simply because MS didn´t wanted Tango or Austin to be acquired by competitors and develop new bangers for them, giving MS a bad rep in a possible future. Which could also be the reason why they ensured an exclusive partnership with TFB and its new game, before anyone else.

Sad and disgusting. But it is what it is.

Manages to buy their freedom especially after all the shit Microsoft has been doing with its studios lately

...

Goes right back to them as partners.

Okaaaaaay...

darthv723h ago

Id venture a guess that TFB working directly with MS was a better outcome than working through Activision to get to MS.

From the article...

"Toys for Bob spun out as an indie back in February after Microsoft instituted sweeping layoffs that impacted 86 employees, which was more than half of the staff"

I doubt those 86 employees enjoyed the Microsoft experience over Activisions.

Inverno1h ago

MS shuts down studios because of lack of resources and then helps these guys by giving em resources. Also MS is what forced them to buy their freedom in the first place? What kind of logic 😂

Sciurus_vulgaris3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Xbox’s gaming division seems to still function as 3 semi-autonomous sub-divisions, Xbox Studios, Bethesda and ABK. The three main sub-divisions can seemingly shut down or build studios and set up partnerships independently. This would explain why Bethesda can recently shutdown studios, while ABK spins off one studio, while building a new one. Plus, Toys for Bob could be spun off by ABK, only to immediately re-partner with Microsoft.
