Call of Duty 4 on Xbox 360: 1080p Stated On Case

Upon reading comments on N4G regarding the comparisons of this long awaited title, Meus Renaissance - everyone's favourite - decided to try and confirm the video output debates. Calling the biggest market leader retail store that specialises in video games in the UK, GAME, he got the answer.

Whether or not it will be native or upscaled is yet unknown but on the case it lists the video outputs as 720p/1080p/1080i.

We all knew that the game were gonna be identical.. We just had a lot of Sony Fanboys who still believe the hype Sony made about the PS3 before it launched! Face it Sony Fanboys you spent $400-$600 on a movie player first and a gaming console second! Sony fed you all this crap and as usual you guys ate it all up! @Chaos- Its probably going to be upscaled in 360. I dont know about the PS3 there are claims that the PS3 does not have upscaling hardware.. So it might be upscaled through software.. Don't know for sure though..

And in regards to the article most games that state 1080P are upscaled. Both the 360 and the PS3 aren't really powerful enough to run games efficiently at 1080P. 720P upscaled is better, games will have better framerates. Probably by next gen when the consoles have more video ram it will be for feasable.

All games can be upscaled to 1080p. I have Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero (both don't have 1080p on the box) that were released before the 360 got 1080p capability, and they work flawlessly upscaled to 1080p.

Ya i kinda knew this, while working at UPS today 2 boxes from gamestop were opened, I saw the PS3 and 360 version, I looked on the back of the 360 version, I think it says 24 players via system link and 18 players online and 720p/1080i/1080p

If what players are saying is true that the PS3 does in fact upscale, then it would only happen if people remove 720p and 1080i from the display settings. Only then would it force the game to output in it's not native res. (Fantastic Four does this) But if all options are selected the PS3 outputs the game in it's native res. From what I've been able to discern, Call of Duty 4 on 360 runs at a native resolution of 720p. It's also what Microsft claims on the game's profile on xbox.com, nothing about 1080p. So the 360 version is upscaling it. That's the beauty of the 360's hardware scalar. More compatability with TVs.

I haven't personally tested the PS3 version, but I believe it does render an image with 1080 vertical resolution, but it's horizontal resolution is something squished then stretched out (ie scaled). The PS3 does indeed have a hardware scalar, contrary to what many people believe, however it can only stretch on image horizontaly, not vertically, which makes it far less versitile then the ANA chip in the 360. So they might be outputting an image like 960x1080, 1280x1080, 1440x1080 or whatever other resolutions and then the scalar can stretch out and scale to 1920x1080. It's what most developers do to get 1080p out of the PS3.

So, for instance, if they are displaying a 960x1080 signal for COD4 PS3, then compared to the 360 version scaling to 1080p (if the 360 is truly upconverting a 720p signal to 1080p), the PS3 version will have more true vertical resolution (1080 versus 720) but will have less true horizontal detail (960 versus 1280). If it's upscaling an of the other ratios I mentioned above, then the PS3 will be outputting a higher resolution picture, slightly edging out the 360 in that department. But the 360 version could be using a more detailed image with some odd resolution and scaling that up to get 1080p (could even be 1280x1080 or something, I don't know, ask infinity ward).

Just a few comments aside here, pretty much every single Xbox 360 game that has come out lately and in the last year states 1080p on the box, when they don't natively render it. Best example would be Halo 3. Says 1080p on the box but we all know it can only render at 640p and upscales from there. A couple other games I checked were GRAW 2, Bioshock and Medal of Honour: Airbourne, and I'm quite sure they don't render at full true 1080p. 360 games can therefore claim it can output a 1080p signal as long as the scalar can upscale to that. I think Call of Duty 3 claimed that it ran at 1080p or 1080i but only rendered at some odd resolution similar to 640p.

The PS3 on the other hand, has to render an image with a vertical resolution of 1080, and whatever else for the horizontal to claim 1080p. Lots of launch games only rendered a vertical resolution of 720 and will never be able to scale to 1080p unless the developers go back and change the rendering code and improve it. You probably won't be seeing a game like resistance play at 1080p, true or not, anytime soon. Hope people get this.

The only way to truly play call of duty 4 at 1080p is to get the PC version, hook up a decent computer to your 1080p screen, and enjoy. I did it with the demo and it played great on my older computer (3.4 Ghz P4 Northwood!!! w/ an AGP X1950 PRO 512 Meg, no AA turned on though). Plug in a controller and claim it's your console running it if u want.

Takumi86 you apparently can't read, but the PS3 does indeed have a scalar chip, but like I stated above it can only scale an image horizontally and not vertically. This means you cannot use the scalar to take older (or even newer I suppose) PS3 games that render at 720p and upscale them to 1080p, it cannot be done. However, a developer can use this chip to take an image of less total resolution (like 960x1080 or 1280x1080) and stretch that to 1920x1080. Now, if they wanted to render at 720p, the game would have to configure itself to render at 720p, the scalar could not downscale that larger image to 720p. Nor could it upscale a 720p image to 1080p, the scalar cannot handle it. The scalar on the PS3 works on a case by case basis and individual developers have to take advantage of it. But basically, yes PS3 games are being scaled as well, but it doesn't mean a 720p game can now render at 1080p. Go read up on the PS3, it can cheat as well :)

Joefw, i appreciate your post as you are trying to explain what is going on with the different versions. HOWEVER, from all the material i have read, the ps3 DOES NOT have a scaler "chip". The way I understood it, the rsx is powerful enough to scale horizontally with new instructions/functionality that was unlocked in a dev kit update. If you could point me to a source that states the ps3 does indeed have a hardware scaling chip other than the rsx, that would be great.

Since the ps3 cannot scale vertically, the 1080p resolution it outputs has to be native. Now what resolution the horizontal is (960, 1280, etc..) remains to be seen.

I think the reason ps3/xbox fans are debating this is because this means the ps3 is powerful enough to output this game in 1080p without a hardware scaler, and it also shows devs like EA, Carmack, Gabe Newel, etc were wrong when they made statements saying the ps3 wasnt as powerful or accessable or whatever, were basically wrong, and didnt take the time to harness the ps3's power.

With that said xbox fans shouldnt worry about which version is better, the game will look fine upscaled on the 360. Just because the vertical resolution on ps3 is native doesnt mean their console is dead, or anything, i think ps3 fans finally just feel liberated that Infinity Ward finally showed the world that the ps3 is every bit as powerful as the 360, and in some instances even more so.

I own both consoles, however i will be purchasing the ps3 version since i am convinced they did a great job on this game for that platform. I can buy 100 other shooters on the 360 if i want, but thats not true for the ps3. Thanks for reading.

Just one more quick comment as to what is the point of upscaling. Here is the best example.

Compatability: Being able to upscale your images to another resolution (or even downscaling in some cases) allows the product to support more television sets. Many older televisions only excepted 1080i but not 1080p or 720p. In the PS3's case, if a game only renderd at 720p, it couldn't do 1080i at all, so it would go down to the next lowest resolution the set could support, usually only 480i or p (and 576p/i in PAL countries). The 360 just scaled it, meaning the television would reacieve the best possible picture that game could render to it.

Lol, oh I love it when people don't know anything. You can render an image in many different ways. People usually only think about the vertical resolution and neglect the horizontal resolution. I'll repeat myself once more. In the case of the PS3, since they cannot upscale 720p to 1080p, in order to render a 1080p image they can render a true 1920x1080 image. However, in many games this may cost too much performance, so what they will do instead is render the image like 960x1080 or 1280x1080 (do the math, 960x1080 would be half a 1080p image). Those images would be horizontally squished, so the scalar chip would stretch these images out horizontally to 1920x1080 and to 16x9. Most people wouldn't notice this as much as a 720p to 1080p scaling.

As for Xbox 360 version not being 1080p, I will again refer you to the comment about Halo 3. Halo 3 only renders at 640p, but is scaled up to 720p/1080i/p. The box says 1080p. Figure that one out. If that doesn't convince you I don't know what will. When it comes to the 360, it only means that this game works with a 1080p television and will output a 1080p signal, doesn't mean the original image is actually 1080p. The xbox.com profile for call of duty 4 claims 720p.

Actually, this is a common process in other areas as well. Anamorphic DVDs are stored in squished resolution, something like 720x480. Now, that image is not a 16x9 image (do the math and figure that one out) so what they do is stretch the image out to 850x480 (or something close to that) to get a 16x9 image, but that image was horizontally stretched (and this also lets them keep lots of horizontal detail when they are rendered on 4:3 televisions).

In the end, who cares.

As another aside, I've been doing some sleuthing online and it appears that the hardware scalar on the PS3 does indeed allow for vertical stretching. The only problem is that for some reason Sony will not allow developers to utilize it. At launch, Sony wouldn't allow anyone to utilize it period, then months later they allowed developers to utilize the horizontal stretching aspect. So it may be possible in the future for older PS3 games to be upscaled as well. Why they can't utilize it right now is unknown. Sony being stupid probably.

Isn't the whole point of blu-ray and hd-dvd is that you can get 1080p because the data can stream off the disc fast of enough. On DVD, I read that the most you can do is 720p/1080i.

We don't know. Full stop. Until either the devs release the *native* resolution, all we know is that both platforms output 1080p - which does not prove that it is native 1080p.

As we have seen with Halo 3 - it said 1080p but was in fact 640p upscaled to 1080p.

Does it matter? Yes and no. Yes if there is a lot of detail required on screen - for example - Empire Earth. This games need more real estate natively - and upscaling does not hide the fact that there is less detail. But for a FPS, you can hide - as the polygons for the models can just be less, and you would not notice it that much.

Or even a better comparison - text on screen. You cannot really stretch text - just look at outputting a 1280 x 1024 image to a 800 x 600 native resolution video projector. When you look at a photo - you very little difference - but when you look at text - you can see the pixels missing from some letters. Same with games like Age of Empires etc. You cannot *fake* higher resolution on these - but on a big character on screen, large environment graphics - you can.

So on COD4 the native resolution argument gets a bit lost due to this - and may even make some believe that the XB360 scaler chip actually really compensates for not outputting native 1080p. But go for a very *busy* screen with smaller and detailed graphics, then it shows - and cannot be hidden - for any platform, console or PC.

So folks - give the 1080p native resolution a rest on COD4 - because in this type of game it will not really matter. Save it for a Empire Earth type game where you can quickly see on the map what area you are covering on the screen.
