This is one of those titles that tries really hard to make you feel like you’re actually playing a game, actually accomplishing something, but it’s more of an illusion than anything else.
Excerpt: "Yoostar is an interesting idea but not one that hasnt been dabbled in before, remember You’re in the Movies? This is Yoostar’s second offering, the first being a standalone product with it’s own camera available on the PC and Mac. They’ve made the game more accessible this time around by releasing on the Xbox with Kinect support or the Playstation 3 using the Playstation Eye. As with the previous Yoostar, you’re acting out real movie scenes and being scored for your acting. You’re scored for the delivery and the on screen performance. Alone the game is rather boring and a game that will make the most out of having a group of people together, you know, playing something other than Rockband, or a boardgame, or a kegger. The developers try to eliminate this problem by implementing a social aspect to Yoostar 2 via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. You can share any clips you star in to any of the 3 and get all sorts of reactions from your family and friends. By uploading...

Well, I'll give it a shot too. I dunno though... the multiplayer was the only part about AC: Brotherhood I didn't like. Just seemed like a big game of chase the dot.
The game has gotten better over the last couple of weeks. The beta definitely improved it.
downloaded the section 8 avatars for plus, they dont seem to be on the list, theyre alright.
i hope people buy cod classic at that price point, man i love jumping onto a dm/tdm
A look back at the original Project Natal teaser trailer with a comparison of what Microsoft demonstrated and what the Kinect system can actually do.
I'm actually glad Project Milo was cancelled. Mix that game with object scanning and you're in for some M-rated stuff.
Not talking about you Naga...
But I swear gamers have to be some of the stupidest people on earth. I swear its like rabbits (fanboys) with carrots (flaimbait articles) in front of them waiting for a bite.
WE ARE SMARTER THAN THIS PEOPLE!!
Here is the bottom line, I highly doubt ANYONE bought Kinect or Move thinking they were gonna be gods gift to gamers. Anyone with half a brain would know when you buy one of these "ad ons" you are gonna sit around and hope a game comes along once in a while that you would use these for. IMO that's just what they are doing.
If you only like Move, stay outta Kinect articles
If you only like Kinect, stay outta Move articles
Again, WE ARE SMARTER THAN THIS PEOPLE!!
smart people stay OFF the web when they could be doing more productive things other than getting annoyed at other gamers who dont share the same opinions as them on a gaming site *inhale*.
sometimes people like to debate/argue/put a point across on things they've tried, own or have an opinion on.
I kinda agree with you though;)
People can criticize things and enter articles about things they intend to criticize.
They don't need your consent.
"Of importance in this scene is the fact that the game addresses Ian by his first and last name (Dixon). The host then sets comedy back a decade by making a Chuck Norris joke"

LOL
None of the motion mediums did what their initial trailers hyped up to do, many of them probably flirting with false advertisement. Kinect....no exception. Their trailers showed all sorts of things that Kinect hasn't done, shown off in real time, or is ever really going to do (As example, they mention quick Z-axis movements/reaction).
I think most folks who were/are in the know had an inkling that Kinect wouldn't be capable of doing a good chunk of the things the marketing adverts suggested it would.
Did MS dupe it's own customers? Just imagine if it was Sony/Move we were talking about instead of MS we would never hear the end of it from the bots.
"Also the fact that they’re dominating the black family by a 900 point margin is pretty racist."

@Vinny(Replying to the first comment only to state that he's not replying to that comment)
I thought the article told the truth, and was also quite entertaining. But you must of found it offensive due to your obvious blind loyalty.
"If you only like Move, stay outta Kinect articles
If you only like Kinect, stay outta Move articles"
eeeerm no, now what?
Which is exactly what they were talking about... games who's environments change with time. And we've had that. We have 120fps as well, even if only on one game (SSHD in 3D mode).
Can someone help me find the advertisement for the 4D console? Or is someone sad that Project Natal was a lie and wants to pretend that everyone else made elaborate commercials and press events to hide the truth?
@FatOldMan and Frosty,
Don't try to explain, there's none so blind as those who refuse to see. Plus, attractions such as Shrek 4D are warping consumers expectations, as well as being a bastardisation of the English language.
The difference is in the AD. I don't remember a 4D advertisement shown on TV. Maybe it was said, but not sure if it was ever advertised.
And as FatOldMan said, the 4th dimension of space is apparently time, so not really a lie.
Now I agree it is marketing, but it is ILLEGAL to to publicly market features for a product that simply do not exist.
The only way they would get away with this is if it was possible. But then the quality comes into play, is it as accurate as the commercial portrays? (Scanning, etc...)
What about the tagline: "It only does everything".
Surely the PS3 doesn't make me a sandwich!
... or even worse, when Sony removed a feature that I paid for called OtherOS! Nothing in Sony's material said "choose between OtherOS OR the ability to play new PS3 games and blu-ray movies"!
@gamingdroid you could go onto the browser and order a sandwich from Dominoes or Jimmy Johns
"It only does everything" is said because it does do a massive amount of things, almost everything you would expect it to. It's just a slogan. Sort of like "It's scrumdiddlyumptious!", not everyone may agree, it's just a slogan to sell a product.
GamingDroid
The "Only Does Everything" tagline is clearly a hyperbole. That is why it is acceptable to advertise.
But as far as Other OS. If you truly wanted other OS you could have kept it and not played more up to date games. But obviously not many want to do that, except for the scientists with the super computer clusters.
Sadly though features can be removed from all consoles, it is in the Terms and Conditions.
Look at it on the bright side, features get added. I didn't pay for 3D, but I get it now. I didn't pay for text chat rooms (cool IMO, can be useful), but I can use them now. Same goes for trophies, etc...
IMO OtherOS was a neat added feature, but certainly not as important as the gaming aspect of the console.
It's called embellishment, but as the article points out (at the end), it was a conceptualized i.e. not reality.
That said, everything this guy pointed out is doable and has been shown in one form or another. From the article:
1. *Hold a conversation with you.*
This is sort of implemented in Mass Effect 3. Kinect can understand the words you are saying and the rest is an AI problem. Nobody I know have sold that problem yet.
2. *...detect the kinds of movements shown.*
Kinect has shown to track even more subtle movements....
3. *..."scan" your gear into the game.*
Shown at E3 and is in Kinect Fun Labs.
4. *...facilitate a virtual "dress up.*
We saw something similar at E3 where Kinect was able to make an avatar look like you. However, this is not presently there
5. *...learn your name.*
Seriously? There is actually a lot of software out there, that does a great job of adding correct pronunciation in like GPS software for street names. Is that the only 5th thing you could fine?
I'm more amazed at what they actually were able to do. I didn't quite believe (and was more hoping) they would only able to do a portion of that, let a lone most of it.
That said, did anyone read this story whom talks about many of the difficulties needed to achieve what Kinect does?
http://www.microsoft.com/pr...
Personally, I think Kinect is an awesome addition to my console. It isn't the sole focus, but get's plenty of support from MS making it a worthy accessory.
so what awesome games are you playing for kinect? If people keep supporting these awful games than microsoft will just keep giving them to you.
Right now, from time to time, I enjoy Dance Central and Kinect Sports.
I'm looking forward to
- Fruit Ninja (Oh, yeah!)
- Gunslinger
- Ryse
- Fable: Journey
- Mass Effect 3
- Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
- Star Wars Kinect might peek my interest, but looks a little repetitive.
- The Japanese games announced sounds interesting too
Lots of stuff going on apart from Kinect Fun Labs and the dash integration.
Keep in mind, one man's cr@p is another man's gold!
yeah, but some take it to farther extremes than others do. Case in point:
Sony's E3 2005 Killzone demo:
They let it show not saying initially it was real time, though eventually their PR reps started to slip out hints that it was before GG finally revealed the truth about it. However... Unlike MS, they did not have a guy standing in front of the screen with a controller in his hand. Sony's wasn't even a lie at first, until their PR reps started saying it was real time (which may not have even been an official company position to take, it could have just been dumbass PR people talking out their butts as usual.). With Natal, we had MS presenting us with deliberately crafted lies. People playing (out of sync) with the star wars demo, Milo being faked, object scanning, all of these things they said we could do and they didn't deliver. Yeah, we got a basic form of object scanning in kinect fun labs, but not scanning your skateboard or anything they actually showed us to be used in an actual game.
So while both companies have indeed lied (Ninty doesn't seem to do it very often), MS is by far the worst about it. They are even the ones who coined the "toy story graphics" thing last gen with the Xbox, even though most try to blame that one on Sony.
Riiight... Those pesky PR people that talk out their butts! I guess Jack Tretton is one of those dumbass PR people talking out of thier butts when he told us all what Ted Price wanted us to know right?
Geoff Keighly: "There was Killzone. A lot of people were excited about that, people were wondering though, you know, was some of the stuff real, was it CGI, it looked so good, I mean, what was the sense from you, is there some stuff in there that's, you know, computer smoke and mirrors?
Jack Tretton: "It's definitely real. I guess we're pretty good at keeping secrets because the dev kits were out there, the dev kits were very intuitive so people did some pretty incredible things and that's one thing Ted wanted to make sure everyone understood, that is real gameplay everybody's seeing out there and I think the other advantage..."
Geoff Keighly: [Interrupting] "So it is gameplay, all that stuff is all gameplay?"
Jack Tretton: "It is gameplay."
@3:49
http://www.g4tv.com/videos/...
that vid wasn't real. The graphics of KZ2 are actually better than he video lol.
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Do you even know who Ted Price is? He works for Insomniac, who developed Resistance. Not Killzone. That could have simply been a mistake (thinking of Resistance, not KZ), or he was dodging the question. Either way, I never denied Sony lied about it at some point. I was just pointig out the fact that they didn't lie about it up front the way MS did, they didn't have a guy fake playing the damn game out in front of everyone. That is my point.
And HS, while there are times when KZ's art direction looks better than that in the trailer, the overall quality of the animation, polygon models, texturing, AA, etc. are far above what was achieved in real time. They did come close enough to satisfy me, but I do notice the difference in just about every real time frame there is. Especially when it comes to anti-aliasing.
i prefer to be holding a plastic gun than holding nothing imagining its a gun ...so the sharpshooter for the ps3 is more of a win for me . all other kinect stuff is lied and boring .
You right InNome
All I can say is Kinect= Rapidly growing library and RECORD setting sales. Move= Wii copy. Nuff said.
A lot of the stuff they said probably had to take a step down because of that on board chip being removed. Some was fluff some was forced. What was disappointing was the faked demonstrations. Many bought into natal because of that. Im sure all company's fluff a few things up to make it more appealing to potential suitors...way of the world.
I personally didn't expect too much ∴ i wast pissed. The celebrities and faked shows kinda lessened my expectations. In fact some aspects were a whole lot better than i imagined. Sings n roundabouts
None of that matters if the most exciting stuff to play is Sesame Street, Child of Eden and a mobile game (Fruit Ninja). I want something MORE.
EDIT: @evercast
Rise of Nightmares doesn't look very good to me. Ghost Recon is only using voice, right? Same for ME3 and Halo? Not paying $150 to use voice commands in games that could get the same results with the mic that came with my 360. I don't think Kinect is pointless, but no title has grabbed me yet.
Rise of Nightmares, Ghost recon (every tom clancey game from now on for that matter), EA sports starting next year, Mass effect 3 integration, Halo anniversary, most likely Halo 4.
On that point Yes I own a kinect and yes it is sitting in a box on the bookshelf.
It's cool it's in all those games, but the only 1 that is a Kinect game is RON, which looks awesome btw. The others just feature kinect. Teh hardcore want a game for Kinect that is good. RON could be that, but it's lacking that game at the moment. Eden maybe.
lets be fair. The ghost recon thing is a gimmick and totally unnecessary while the mass effect 3 interaction is voice commands which is nothing new to xbox game. In fact voice commands were a big thing before it went out of fashion
I think you are lying, and don't actually own a kinect. I use the voice recognition for tv watching like almost every day. It works as well as the video controls in StarTrek, only instead of prefacing your commands with "Computer" you say "Xbox"
The dress up thing kind of exists but in a very small amount of shops (more gimmicky). The object tracking is interesting. In the trailer is said it could do so neat stuff but the recent E3 press conference showed something along that line but was much different and oddly coincidental (the object selection boundary was the same shape as the object which suggest only certain objects can be recognised and not any household item).
I'll take just one thing it can't do: hardcore games. Mature games (like Rise of Nightmares) are not necessarily hardcore. Pointless waving of hands doesn't get any better for me if I'm told to slash gore meat instead of collecting coins in Disneyland. Same boring gimmick.
Well he is wrong on four out of five counts, not bad for a fanboy. Also count five will be rectified by ME3 this fall.
But Mass Effect 3 won't be learning your name.
All it is doing is simple voice recognition. Has been done many times in the past with simple microphones for games like Tom Clancy's End War.
The only difference is Kinect has a library of words, pronunciations, etc.... That make it easier to enable voice recognition. At least that is what the devs say.
i swear ur name is something i heard on bevis and butthead.
OT why are you so sure. You called them fanboys for stating the truth? Some people will hate for the sake of it, yes...This article is far from a fanboy rant or hate piece
on top of what gamingdroid said above its likely that some of the aspects questioned will be somewhat achievable with the level of support MS are giving...kinda like the killzone 2 trailer. Time will tell if they can actually match and surpass their targets like the aforementioned did. Good luck to them
EDIT, ha ha 'Surely the PS3 doesn't make me a sandwich!....' I never saw a sony press conference or advert showing the ps3 doing everything especially NOT making a celebrity a sandwich;)...I did, on the other hand, see a whole heap of NON GAMING celebrities hyping their experiences.....oh, and a few charming elephants
That's the strategy of marketing by using hypes. Yet, so many gamers are easily got sold into the lies of marketing. It's because when the marketing shows something so incredible, more gamers will want to believe it because of the imagination of what it can "do". Of course when the final product comes out, another hype is used by saying someday it can do what the hype showed. That ensures more gamers will buy the product today and hoping it may reach the hype something which rarely does.
That's how marketing works. Sell hypes to cover up the lies.
People keep saying marketing is to cover up lies. But it isn't.
Only shady companies lie to the public. Real marketing is portraying features that EXIST. Not every company lies you know.
I could give you countless examples of modern day commercials, etc... that do not lie. There is a reason for that, lying about a product is illegal.
There is no such company that advertise 100% truth about their products. Every company mixes hypes at the top of mixed truth and lies in their marketing.
Question is the product advertised with more truth or lie? And how much hype is put the top to make the product more exciting?
So if you say there are examples that advertising that don't lie (100% truth), I don't believe you.
There is an Ethics code in business. Sure not all follow that code, but just for giggles I searched for a random Gatorade commercial, (First product that came to mind)
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Grabbed the first video. No lies. Sure a bit of hype, but where are the lies?
Hmmm.
"1) ...hold a conversation with you."
It does do voice recognition and voice commands, so this is possible. In Kinectimals you can use voice commands to make your pet perform tricks.
"2. ...detect the kinds of movements shown...the daughter mimics the motions of driving and her family follows suit by leaning side to side with the turns the car makes."
That's how you control the car in Joyride. Leaning does powerslides.
"a kid is seen playing a Godzilla-type, city-destruction game and swings his arms around to wreck buildings"
In one of Ubisofts fitness game you do similar stuff. Knock boxes, balance digital objects with your arms etc.
"3. ..."scan" your gear into the game."
There's an app in Funlabs that lets you do that. It's not utilized in any game yet, but the app shows it's possible.
"4. ...facilitate a virtual "dress up."
Again, there are games that scan your body and use it as the in-game model you play with. I don't see why it would be impossible to put clothes textures on that model as well?
"5. ...learn your name."
Not sure about this one. I know it can recognize your body and face, and I think it has voice recognition as well.
What I'm trying to say here is that Kinect might not do exactly what was in that trailer but none of it is impossible techwise. The author seems a tad biased as well which makes it hard to take seriously.
Some quotes:
"A girl calls her obligatory black friend, Sarah"
"Sarah then waves like an idiot at her Xbox"
etc.
Being a conceptualization trailer I think it comes close enough and that it's as misleading as the author says. That said, I would never buy one myself lol.
Those features exist, but the point is that all of them were either misleading or flat out tales for Kinect. The article's about Kinect.
I had to reply to this one.
1. Look up LifeLine on the PS2. And a conversation requires intellect, not glossary match ups to do a command.
2. He is talking about the disruption in motion capture when more than one human is in view, not how ridiculous you look when you play the game yourself.
As for Ubisoft's game... PS2 did the exact same thing with the eye toy. Sorry, but I have to point out the obvious.
3. True. But sadly it isn't supported in any game yet.
4. He is talking about how the lady was able to put her friend in a 3d modeled dress and move around in it in real time. Not putting your face in the game like in Rainbow Six.
5. Hi my name is nick. "Hi contestant number 1!"
That simple. And facial recognition has been around in the government for well over 15 years and has been done using a 2D image.
nit picking that's all this is, do people seriously not expect companies to compose a video of what they have in mind for the object there announcing, loads of things the PS3 and WII were suppose to do but can't, stop crying and get over it developers can't do everything, they can only do there best....so if you don't like what they present shut up and move on if you do like it than you do, either way appreciate the hard work people put in on this stuff cause we wouldn't have any of this with out hard work and dedication
Kinect has lived up to the hype. It is capable of doing everything discussed in that fanboy article. Some of it has already been accomplished.
@server-1
You lost me. I don't understand why you want me to show you "4D games" with "7 controllers".
We're talking about your claim that Kinect can do everything in the article. You claim doesn't become true if I show something else, which seems unrelated?
Great article, even if it is written ex-post-facto.
The writing on the wall was pretty clear for anyone who knew anything about games, or computer vision, but this pretty much spells it out for those who didn't.
I think we can agree that most of that stuff is possible, but is not present in any Kinect game, and that's the point of the article.
I'm having a hard time following some of the comments here regarding Kinect having a conversation with you...and ME3 being used as evidence.
Just like the author said, you're reading a script. Even the commands are scripted. "Garrus...move up" only works with a controller. You can't say, "Garrus, move to cover behind that short wall to your left"..and expect him to do so, even if you use the controller to point it out. You can't ask Liara for tactical advice or ask how her day is going. Well...you can, but she won't and can't respond.
Now, I'm not saying it's impossible, but how much longer will the Kinect defenders say.."just you wait. Kinect will be able to <insert feature> really soon. You're calling it a conversation but it's really just voice commands, which have been around for quite some time. You don't need Kinect to do voice commands.
Just remember..the author is talking about right now and not next year after however many patches or updates. He's talking about today and I agree with him. Kinect won't improve unless we question it's progress. What's wrong with that?
Microsoft has said that this technology is fairly early as far as capabilities go. Then of course you have to take into account developers who are actually willing to utilize what it can do.
The Kinect can only do as much as the game allow; and as of now everything is pretty basic. Let the technology develop some before we start saying what it can and can't do.
Why are people even discussing this device still? It's garbage and always has been.
1. Hold a conversation with you
- Agree, it is quite a complex ideas and AI just aren't up to par yet. Although there have been chat software where it can respond to u to a certain degree. Incorporating it into a vitual Ai character could be possible, but to be just like a real person, i don't think we are quite there yet.
2. Detect the kinds of movements shown
- Yes you can push too, go play child of eden or just watch video and see why people keep pushing their arm forward. Moving in a very pronounced/wide/crazy motions actually doesn't help. Short/small movement are much more accurate (try navigate Dance Central for example). People who aren't used to kinect tend to move in a dramatic manners and that is the wrong way to do it. I know i tried. What people can do with kinect (on PC of course)
which include playing a virtual keyboard and it can detects small fingers movement as seen on youtube kinect hack videos. It really depends on what you program the kinect to focus on. Like it won't mistake my feet from my hand no matter what if u tell it to focus to just my hand (try starting kinect on xbox with your feet, it won't work. It always follow your hand movement only). There are a bunch of people waving and do all sort of things in the back ground while 2 people playing kinect sport, and kinect is doing a really good job of just focusing on those 2 people while neglected everyone else. To switch out, those people really have to leave the view area so that kinect can switch on to someone else. That how much focus it has on the player. Explosion sound a little bit dramatic.
3. Scan gears into game.
- i thought this would be quite easy to implement. Do we even need kinect to do this? They already have facial scanning and live motion capture for the new avatar virtual chat room instead of just a pure static image that you apply to an object. Which one do u think is more advance?
4. Facilitate a virtual "dress up"
- http://123kinect.com/kinect... here this say it all. Of course, it isn't perfect yet and people do look fatter than they really are (hopefully it would be backward if you are fat), but it can get better with times.
5. Learn your name.
- yeah i can see problem with this. This is where racial prejudice come into play. I don't think kinect can prounce Asian names right (unless asian people program it to recognize asian names)? And yes, i don'tthink it would be seemless. Although the facial recognition is great. The main xlive account was log in using my brother facial recognition. It won't register anyone else, including me (it was my console and i pay for it, that bastard) so i have to do it mannually.
Here, check these out to see what kinect is capable of.
http://ismashphone.com/2010...
N4G has a lot of false accusation of kinect capabilities.
1. can't detect fingers
2. can't see in the dark
3. can't detect a lot of objects at once.
4. can't detect small or subtle movements...
5. Can only do on rail games, etc....
It might jsut be the limitation of the xbox, but on PC, you can see that kinect has a lot of potential. Hopefully the next gen xbox would fair better.
The video footage of this guy playing it is quite hilarious.
