Lol, these images are hilarious.
GBA was the best... and that PSP actually looks good, except for the screen.

Istanbull4874d ago

So now brown/wood equals old stuff? Weird and dumb, 80's consoles weren't like they were cut out wood. Never seen a NES, Commodore 64 or a TurboGrafx 16?

I still have a classic purple Nintendo DS-like Game&Watch system.

Kids these days, probably we will see the same article about 90's consoles too.

Non_sequitur4874d ago

In the 80s all the wood patterns were meant to evoke a feeling of simplicity in the high tech world they were living in.

DuneBuggy4874d ago (Edited 4874d ago )

Istanbull has a point. How old was the author of this? They appear more like somthing you would see in the 1960's/1970's (or older..Jeesh..that PSP would be right at home in the world of Bioshock).
In the 80's, your giant entertainment center that held all your electronics was likely (fake) wood and maybe your Dodge Caravan had some down the side..but thats about it.

Anon19744874d ago

That made me smile. It reminds me of my old Atari 2600 with the wood grain on the front. Also kinda made me miss my old Xbox. I sold it to get cash for my 360 when it came out but looking at the old Xbox picture kinda made me pine (no pun intended) for my Xbox. By far the original Xbox was my favorite console last gen. Not that I didn't enjoy the hell outta my gamecube and PS2, by the Xbox was my console of choice last gen and the 360 for the better part of this gen as well.

Big_Dom4874d ago

Spot on. This is more like what a console would look like in the 50's, rather than the 80's. An Xbox made out of wood in the same design as the 2001 model? I don't think so. Another thing the 80's was synonymous for was the LED display. Whoever created these photoshops obviously had a lack of imagination and understanding of what the 80's were about. The GBA design is OK, mind. Closest one out of the lot.

sonnyz4874d ago

The article is full of sh*t. The images are from a contest on worth1000.com (here: http://www.worth1000.com/co... They are "vintage", not from the 80's, but much earlier. Probably more like 50's.

Motorola4874d ago

@Istanbull did you totally just copy that from the comment section of the source?

Istanbull4874d ago

@Motorola: no I'm the one that wrote that in the comment section in the source.

Sheikh Yerbouti4874d ago (Edited 4874d ago )

In the 70's (Not 80'S) electronics had wood veneers for aesthetics - Intellivison, Atari 2600, my Realistics 8-track - not make the entire unit out of wood. They were mostly metal/plastic still.

Ignorant. This is more 1800 than 80's - steampunk and what not. Ev

BISHOP-BRASIL4874d ago

@Istanbull

LOL So true, I read the tittle and looked at the image and couldn't help but to ask since when was the 80's steampunk, even TVs on the 80's were all already made of plastic, not the wood and metal encasing. This Xbox looks more like a radio from the 40's or 50's.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_y...

Also I just watched Grown Ups, remembers the spoiled brat asking what was the box behind the TV for.

Kurt Russell4874d ago

Didn't they make consoles in the 80's? And weren't they made of cheap plastic and garish shapes. Or did we go through a steam punk era without me noticing?

RedDragan4873d ago

This article should be reported for being crap.

Plastic was majorly dominant in the 1980's, like now!

chainer30004874d ago

yeah, no screen was that big in 1980.

Spitfire_Riggz4874d ago

Yeah the GBA SP was actually put together with some creativity. My favorite.

morkendo234874d ago (Edited 4874d ago )

most of those electronic look like from the Flintstones era not 60'S- 80's guess if pebbles and bam-bam had video game system these would be it. except the xbox look more like wooden suit case for fred at the rock corry LUNCH TIME haaaaaaaa

crystalnova20044874d ago

I would pay the world's weight in gold for any of these. Awesome pics. Hopefully the case modding community will be making some of these bad boys. Bet the 360 would overheat even quicker than normal though :p

gameseveryday4874d ago

Ha ha! Thats a good point you made. That it wont be the RROD..it will FTSL...FIRE TO SAVE LIFE :S

Perjoss4874d ago

nice try but its not a 360, its the original xbox which did not have any overheating problems.

DlocDaBudSmoka4874d ago

maybe no overheating problems but there was a problem with the ac cable. something about them catching fire. im not 100% sure, but i know i read of something wrong with them.

v1c1ous4874d ago

even in the 80's i doubt we would have found many electronics made with a wood case.

ALSO, DOWN WITH ALL WEBSITES WHO MAKE YOU GO TO DIFFERENT PAGES JUST TO SHOW ONE PICTURE ON EACH PAGE!!

HarryMonogenis4874d ago

It's so that it counts as another view which in-turn counts as more money generated from any advertisers -- a website like "Gaming Bolt" probably only has Google Ads anyway..

PSjesus4874d ago

lol,GBA has a cool design

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies3d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX3d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody3d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_3d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie2d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly3d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga3d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit3d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

Two Decades Later, the Original Splinter Cell is Still a Masterpiece

They don't make games like this anymore.

vgvill12d ago

Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.

Jingsing12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Agreed with those sentiments. The quality of the CPU controlled characters make or break a stealth game and they are pretty poor in all the Splinter Cell games by today's standard. This is what led me to playing Spies vs Mercs all the time in later games just to get a better stealth experience from a real person. Arguably Sony are making better stealth games albeit not Tom Clancy stuff.

TheProfessional12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

You should stick with fortnite or one of the countless bloodborne style games then. What a joke.

rlow112d ago

I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.

vgvill12d ago

They are making a remake, I think. I loved the original game when it was released, but I tried to play it again in recent years and just couldn't get on with it. The same with the older Hitman games.

PrecursorOrb12d ago

Yeah chaos theory still holds up though I gotta say. If you’re a fan of the series I highly suggest you go back to that one. Ubi has said they are remaking sc for “modern audiences”. I don’t have a lot of faith for the future of that company

Chocoburger12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.

Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!

HvNzSoul3d ago

Everyone needs to quit with all of the unnessacery Ubi-hate. SC Conviction and Blacklist are both still good games.

HvNzSoul3d ago

Everyone needs to quit with all of the unnecessary Ubi-hate. SC Conviction and Blacklist are both still good games, they just weren't 100% focused on stealth with Conviction and they remedied that in Blacklist. The only thing they have released recently that I was disappointed with was Watch Dogs Legion, and Skull & Bones. Everyone seems to be salty about the misleading trailer for the original Watch Dogs and The Division. Which are also, both good games, and actually Watch Dogs seems like it was ahead of its time even with all the trailer drama (having gone back and played recently, can say the game didnt deserve all the flak). Yeah the misleading E3 trailer that had better graphics than release is understandable to a very small degree, when most Teaser Trailers, or Game Demo's only have that portion of the game developed so they use the highest quality assets of w/e they have being showed, or what they are showing was made purely for the showing, allowing for extra polish . As to the gripes about minor game design changes, or cut features upon a games release just goes to show how unknowledgeable most gamers are in terms of how game development works or to even understand what what the hell a WIP, let alone titles still in early development.

Good games from Ubi since 2014 (Year that SC Blacklist Released) include:

Watch Dogs 1 & 2
The Division 1 & 2 (Although I had a hard time getting into The Division 2 at first)
R6 Siege
Ghost Recon Wildlands & Breakpoint
Immortals Fenyx Rising
AC Origins, Odyssey, MIrage (Haven't finished Valhalla games too damn long)
Far Cry Primal, and 5 (6 also has a length issue)
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora
Prince Of Persia The Lost Crown

Haven't played a couple of titles those being For Honor (played at launch but didn't honestly give it an actual go), The Crew, R6 Extraction and at the time of writing this xDefiant.

Even if you absolutely hated any of the above titles, they aren't inherently bad games, they're just good, but not always top quality either.

I say give Ubi credit where credit is due, they at least fix games post launch if they start out rough, Breakpoint is an excellent example this and is such an enjoyable experience now compared to it's launch.
