Sony to push forward PlayStation 4 plans if PS3 support wanes after jailbreak?

There's been so much written about the PlayStation 3 jailbreak in recent weeks that it's all too easy to glaze over the facts and put it down as another victory for piracy. But after numerous commentators speculated that this is one exploit Sony can't fight back against and that the PS3 is actually 'cracked for good' what does this mean for the future of the console? And does it mean we're likely to see the PlayStation 4 a whole lot sooner than we were meant to be?

Hell... PS2 had a shit load of piracy and Sony is supporting it 10 years later. No way the PS3 is gonna "wane". Lol.

yess4883d ago

The difference is that the PS3 have a closed network system, which the PS2 did not.
If that system breaks the PSN will be useless, or atleast broken.

I think Sony will stick to the plan, and try to repair the damage.
No need to rush.

WildArmed4883d ago

the author OBVIOUSLY didn't think his article through.
We have the prime example of piracy on console (albeit a handheld console) PSP.
Piracy is rampant on it and YET sony has been supporting it for a VERY long time..
and he actually thinks that they'll abandon PS3 just coz of jailbreak

....

gta28004883d ago (Edited 4883d ago )

The PSP already has a huge established piracy problem. It became a problem a long time ago...not too long after it came out and Sony didn't rush the PSP2 then, nor are they rushing it now. So the PS4 will not be rushed even if piracy becomes a problem. They're not going to give up, just like with the PSP. They will fight back.

Information Minister4883d ago

Of course the PS3 is gonna "wane", as developers turn to piracy free platforms like the Wii, the Xbox 360 and particularly the PC. Thats just common sense. /s

HappyGaming4883d ago

Seriously does Geohot walk around in the streets on his own?

You would think with 40 million pissed of PS3 owners someone would have hospitalized him by now.

Billy_Dee_Williams4883d ago

Seeing as PS3 fanboys are far from the most threatening people on the planet, I figure he should be able to roam the streets just fine.

badz1494883d ago

if you watch his arrogant face on Attack of the show, you'll want to find him and do the honor hospitalizing him yourself!

Corepred44883d ago

@Billy-dee
lol way to stereotype ps3 owners. i'm sure out of 40 million people there are some that would beat you down. hell i could i bet i could pick a couple of kids out of 40 million that would whoop you! Seriously have you noticed how high school kids look like 30 year olds nowadays!? lmao

DeadlyFire4882d ago

PS3 isn't gonna wane, but PS4 will hit in 2012/2013.

When is the last time you saw Sony land all its major IPs in one year? 2011 is packed with KILLZONE 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3. As well as other titles. Just seems to be a strange coincidence to me. I think something is being prepared for E3 2011/2012 to be shown off either way. A prototype and speculative CG videos of games yet to exist. I believe in the very least. One new console will show up at E3 2011. Potential to have all three, but noone knows just yet. If they do they are not telling.

matey4882d ago (Edited 4882d ago )

yes but ps2 sold at nearly the same rate as wii and its alot cheaper so attach rate of new ps2 units sold made this happen the ps3 hasnt got even 1/4 of ps2/wii sales ie why the ps4 might happen sooner rather than later when people start pirating games its over 4 ps3 the wii has been pirated 4 3 years now so all the game sales on wii have been with pirates but having 80 million units sold worldwide helps because not all them people are pirates on ps3 the game sales are the worst and now there doomed

WhittO4882d ago

@PS3n360
I'm sure Sony will find a way to locate the hackers online somehow, just a matter of time before they get banned/bricked.

P1NKY4882d ago (Edited 4882d ago )

Has anyone heard of the Quantum Computer. Scientists have made a computer that uses Quantum Particles for the computation. I can't be bothered to explain fully but basically it uses 1, 0, 01, 10 each being a single bit. (Quantum particles can be in two places at once) However once you try to look at it, measure it etc it no longer acts like a Quantum particle so its no longer able to have 01 or 10 as a single bit.

Basically I was just thinking that in the future they could use these Quantum Particles for the securtiy measures in computers. That way if a hacker tries to look at the Root Keys of the system it will be impossible for them to see it because as soon as something looks at the Quantum Particle it stops being one, basically destroying the Root Key.

It's REALLY hard to explain in writing but I know what i'm tyring to explain. And uses these Quantum Particles could be the best type of security for computers. Obviously I don't know everything there is to know about these Quantum Particles so I don't know whether this is possible but if it is. It would make computers practically impossible to hack unless the person who came up with the Root Key told everyone what it is.

Dang the ps3 hack is that bad that Sony can't do anything?? The xbox and nintendo still strong after being hacked. Idk y people making a big deal about the ps3 hacked when everything gets hack. People it is 2011 get use too it.

ChristianGamer4883d ago

Ps3 already sells less games than wii and 360, now factor in this hack and you can see how dire this can become. Look at psp, which has a similarly easy security breach, absolutely dead software-wise worldwide. Hopefully this isn't about to happen to ps3 and sony won't be pushing ps4 as psp is still supported by them, however lets not be blinded by fanboyism into naivety

zeeshan4883d ago

^ PS3 sells less games? Since when? And even if SONY has lesser amount of sales in NA it doesn't mean that they have the same situtation around the world? Think people, THINK before you speak :)

jammydude4883d ago

Sony usually sells more copies on big multiplatform releases worldwide than MS does, besides shooters (BFBC2, COD) and even so the PS3's exclusives total sales greater thann MS's exclusives (there was an article a while back that I can dig up for proof if you want)

WhittO4883d ago (Edited 4883d ago )

This is RIDICULOUS!! The PS3 is the last console to be hacked, that is all. It's not going to render every ps3 useless or something, it's JUST a HACK.
The Wii/360 and every other console does just fine even though they have been JB. It's only getting so much attention because it has taken so long for them to do it on PS3.

As for PS3 selling less games, you won't be able to use any of the online services, so what would be the point in owning games like Cod when you can't even play online? Or getting Trophies you can't share. Seems like you would miss out on alot of what games have to offer these days... and what the ps3 has to offer.

Why would you risk you PS3 getting bricked when you paid so much for it too!? Makes no sense.
I would hate to "contaminate" my PS3 & XMB with a load of hacks/glitches that would prob end up shortening it's lifespan like most jailbreaks do.

PS3n3604883d ago

The difference is that with the xbox you can't go online with a hacked console. That keeps multiplayer games profitable. With this ps3 hack sony can't tell who is using it. That makes ps3 multiplayer virtually unplayable unless you like invisible enemies unloading unlimited rocket launcher rounds up your ass all day long. People will be able to pirate hack and play these games online without paying for it. This SUCKS!!!!! The solution is to only play with people you know and trust. Sony is gonna have to hire a bunch of people to just play online all day and report abusers and have them banned. Until they make a new free id and start again.

dead_eye4883d ago

@ps3n360 Even if Sony can't detect it. Which I ain't heard Sony say so ain't gonna worry if it's true just yet. If someone cheats in a game I'm in then I'll report them and BAM Sony don't need to detect they get it reported to them for free.

You'd think the PS3 was the only thing to ever get hacked.

Seferoth754882d ago

LOL yeah dude cause every one who is using the game for free will instantly have access to cheats in the game. Too funny

PS3 is dommed!!!! Now PS4 will be rushed! haha. These hack articles are getting ridiculous.

Where there's a will, there's a way. And Sony will patch some of these loopholes somehow. People thought the PS3 would never be hacked but it happened. Now people think the PS3 will never be fixed because of the hardware issue...but it will happen. Sony doesn't have a bunch of nerdy virgin hackers working from their moms basement like most of these hackers. They're professionals, so I have some faith they will figure something out. Sony's engineers got outsmarted this round...but they will fire back. Their engineers will work something out.

ATiElite4883d ago

I hate to say this but I'm glad the Ps3 got hacked because now all the DOOM, GLOOM, and It's DEAD articles are now being written for the PS3 instead of the PC.

back to reality.....The Ps3 will have a successful ten year life span and will be sold for a long time. If anything Sony may go ahead with their proposed upgrade add on unit which will most likely come with new security. Maybe! No Ps4 until every game looks like Uncharted 3 or better.

dead_eye4883d ago

PS3 already had it's turn with the doom and gloom articles. Should be someone elses go now ;)

dead_eye4883d ago

PS3 had it's doom and gloom articles. Time for someone else to have then ;)

davekaos4883d ago

sure piracy is the main issue now but judging from the past the console will now sell a boat load more.
Yes some software figures will fall which is a shame but on the other hand where MP is the main selling point of a game EG KZ COD SOCOM etc.. i think its titles like these that will see a huge boost in sales especially if they are boasting a file size of over 15gb

Keith Olbermann4883d ago

Did they do it with psp or ps2? No. Did MS do it when 360 was broken? No.

PS3n3604883d ago

this is more like dreamcast as it is undetectable and unpatchable.

SaturnTo4883d ago

Give it a break, The 360 and Wii have already cracked and the PC has allways been cracked but they are all doing fine! All this Crap about the PS3 hack is so old already.

Christopher4883d ago

Yeah, because they would rush out something that they normally spend a few years on developing and will need to get into developer hands two years before release... /s

what about the hacks the 360 has had I have played modern warfare 2 with unlimited kill streaks enabled and god mode on and it doesn't seem to be bothering MS that much.

RSPproductionz4883d ago

are you stupid? most of sonys exclusives come from devs owned by sony. you really are a loner on the internet

Close_Second4883d ago

If Loner can still approve stories then perhaps N4G site admin needs to rethink who can approve. Maybe if your rating falls beneath 3-stars then your right to approve stories is revoked.

visualb4883d ago

if you think all that you listed will happen because of piracy, you need to get your head right and consider a few things:

piracy already exists on 360 and the Wii....devs still develop for it.

firmware updates and patches constantly...oh the humanity please stop this horror/s

developers won't bother developing exclusively anymore? sony has 20 in house studios, they develop games regardless of sales drops or not, because they are ultimately part of sony and sony funds them themselves.

so...Loner, stop making a circus out of yourself constantly on here, leave, and have a fresh start at REAL LIFE.

Very unlikely they didn't drop the PSP when only SE were making games for it.

Kamikaze1354883d ago

Did Microsoft or Nintendo push their next console after their current ones were hacked? No and those have been hacked for years now. People are blowing things out of proportion.

funzotothemax4883d ago

that's because the ps3 is completely hacked. it's much different than the xbox and wii hacks.

why are some people not understanding this?

visualb4883d ago

i understand this, but I doubt its going to get so out of hand the PS3 will be abandoned instantly

there are two extremes here:

people saying "bah this doesn't matter this isn't news!" > it IS important and it matters

people saying "this is it, PS3 is doomed Sony will abort it all and release PS4 next year" > no, thats unrealistic, firstly this whole hacking stuff will be subdued due to the law and firmware updates, and secondly, they will affect a small part of the community directly.

Kamikaze1354883d ago (Edited 4883d ago )

What are YOU not understanding? You can go on talking about keys all you want, but if I recall correctly, the 360 and Wii have never been "fixed" or "healed from hacking". They've been hacked consistently for years.

So tell me...how does this unfixable PS3 hack any different from those unfixable Wii and 360 hacks? It's not like Microsoft and Nintendo will make their Wii and 360 hack proof.

So even though it's making headline news all over the internet that the PS3 has been hacked and can't be fixed, when have the 360 and Wii been fixed?

PS3n3604883d ago

I know right? I just see those three monkeys with there hands over their ears, eyes, and mouth when I read the comments about the xbox and the wii hacks. This is waaaaay worse than that.

NoobSessions4883d ago (Edited 4883d ago )

Seriously? These rumors and thoughts about what the hacks could do are going way too far.

Every other system has been hacked, and the PS3 is barely being hacked. Also, many people are going to be deterred by the fact some games that really utilize the BR Disc will take forever to download. The PS3 being hacked isnt going to hurt Sony that much, if anything itll help sell more hardware, although software sales may go down. If it goes anything like the Xbox, Sony will be just fine.

R_aVe_N4883d ago

I agree this crap is going a little to far. Every system get hacked it is just a matter of time. It is only a big deal because fanboys make it a big deal really. Nothing will change as far as plans for the PS4 if anything this will push Sony to work harder on it.

Kamikaze1354883d ago

People are making it seem like the PS3 is the first system to get hacked and the others are hack proof. Maybe it's a conspiracy????

Sony shares big new PS Plus stat, but not the one we want to see

PlayStation Plus has improved the split of PS4 and PS5 players on its priciest tiers, but Sony continues to hide total subscriber numbers.

Mr Logic9h ago

Uh...They're definitely not equivalent.

"Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service now has 34 million subscribers."

"the total number of PS Plus subscribers across all tiers was 47.4 million"

darthv728h ago(Edited 8h ago)

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv727h ago(Edited 7h ago)

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

victorMaje7h ago

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils1h ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick5h ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21831d 22h ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan1d 20h ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga1d 19h ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--1d 21h ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC1d 20h ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop1d 17h ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

isarai8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai7d ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander19727d ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot7d ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander19727d ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

Progress is inevitable. Nobody driving cars today is complaining that the horse and buggy is no longer around. Yes, some jobs will be lost but guess what? With innovation comes new job opportunities. It's how the cycle of the job market works.
