Activision face boycott by Gamers

Angry gamers begin backlash of Activision after Robert Kotick's statement that he'll like to see the price of games rise. With the sequel churner himself smug at the fact during the recession he'll happily rise game prices, starting with Modern Warfare hitting at an extra £5.00 sterling than usual retail prices.

Blu-ray on the other hand, the film is shot in HD, so they are actually doing more work to down sample it to standard definition, yet DVD is MUCH cheaper.

It doesn't help that many Developer's are running scared from the Modern Warfare 2 release date, which will allow Activision to easily claim the sales that other publishers aren't willing to fight for.

most COD buyers are casual gamers who know nothing about the price raise. Activision will use this fact to their advantage to.

They raise the price in one region while keeping it the same in America and some other places. When they sell 10 million copies they can say the price hike worked even though most people had no idea and paid the regular price.

Before COD 4 the last activision game I bought was tony hawk 2 on dreamcast. I wont miss supporting them. The only way im going to get COD6 is used or if somewhere drops the price well below 60$.

I wish they tried to hike the price of every version everywhere, so that everyone would know. Then this might work.

The only game I like from Activision is the COD series and I was already on the fence over MW2 but only because I wanted to go a different route this year and lean more towards racers to finish out 09. Now, even though I live in the US, I don't even have COD:MW2 on my radar any more.

A few of my friends are disgusted with Bobo and are also veering away from MW2. I'm sure guys like me wont make much of a difference but at least I know I am not a hypocrite. Gaming is an expensive hobby and if we let Aholes like this guy get away with it in one region he will soon try it in others. DLC and being nickle and dimed this generation has already worked my last nerve. If other devs and publishers follow suit with this guy I will find other things to do to occupy my free time.

beardtm-we might well live in a world where the free market rules but sometimes companies abuse their consumers and this is one of those times and Acti are trying it on in a country very badly hit by current economic problems.

They've consistently done this to UK gamers with over the top prices for GH WT full band bundles going at nearly twice the US cost(which they bklamed on "different" tax un the UK but in a cost of over £100 we calculated that import/export duty plus VAT would account for less than £23 and that's without taking any US taxes into account)and they're doing it with DJH as well? Beggars belief and it's no shock that they're going to try and justify a worldwise hike by ripping off a market already used to paying more for their(activisions) products, is it?

Facy is that most COD players aren't core gamers, don't read either the gaming press or see it on the net so it's up to all of us to spread the word about this con. I've already started and though at first I felt tight on IW the truth happens to be that had they wanted to distance themselves from this stance Acti have taken they could have easily done so. Or what? Acti drop them? Hardly likely when they're their best dev(or dev they publish)these days is it?

So in this case the right thing, even if noone else does it is to take a stand. That 5£ increase would probably increase that by 5-10€...

My fellow gamers in the UK. I totally agree with "TheHater", if Activision Blizzard can increase prices in Europe and see no loss in sales then what would stop them from increasing prices in America. If this were to happen this would affect gamers the world over. I will give you a quick example. In the US a new game will generally retail for 60 USD while in Europe it can range from 30 the 50 pounds. Now in Barbados (which is in the Caribbean for those that may be unaware)a new game retails from between 90 - 100 USD. If you were curious about consoles I'll give you a breakdown

Xbox360 Elite - 399 USD in US vs 899 USD in Barbados

yeah it is weird...this generation EA almost entirely turned themselves around...excellent new IP's (Dead Space for example)...and publishing titles like Burnout Paradise that were stacked with free content nearly 2 years after release...

Most games I get on day one are £37.97, I will not be buying MW2 but i will buy MAG for £34.99 of amazon and uncharted £31.99 from tesco's.

Well if gamers don't show that they won't put up with being scammed then it will just keep happening! What better way to show you won't allow yourself to get ripped off then by joining a boycott of the biggest game of 2009!

The whole reason they are using MW2 to push prices up is because they know its wanted by so many people. They figure the best way to drive all the prices up and raise the bar and expectations for pricing, is to get people to accept it by pushing it on a "must have" game. Once something is accepted it will just continue down the same route.

What better way for gamers to show that they will not fall for such a cheap and obvious tactic then by boycotting the very game that everyone expects to sell so well.
Trust me, if MW2 isn't selling well in the first 2 weeks of release then it will soon drop in price. So at least consider buying a couple of other games when MW2 comes out to keep yourselves occupied for a bit, I'm sure games like Uncharted 2 can keep you occupied for a wee while.

It also has to be noted that one of the reasons so many games that were due to come out around the same time got pushed back, is exactly for that reason that all game publishers will profit from Activision pumping the prices up. If they get away with it then so will everyone else, so they thinned out the large selection of games that would have been available at the same time to help ensure the successful sales figures of an overpriced game.

I don't expect a boycott will happen as people rarely take a stand and do the sensible thing that will help them in the long run.
Ultimately people find it hard to stick together and wait for something they want.

Think about it though, if enough people do it, it will help us all.... at least for a while until they try the next tactic to empty our wallets!

As an EA fan, i know there is ALOT of EA haters. However now that Activision is "on top" by being the biggest company of third parties how do people feel. Yeah EA got into bad news by supporting ads in games, DLC whoring, and copy protection on PC but was any of that as bad as what Activision has done these last few months alone? here is the thing for a while EA really were bad, i for one was not a supporter but EA has changed its tune and they are investing in the sort of quality games that i am willing to support.

EA actually listened... they still have changes to make, but i believe they could see they had gradually created a reputation and it was not a good one so they have worked hard to change that image.

While people were giving EA all the stick ( which i think it deserved at the time) less attention was on activision which gave them room to rise to the top so to speak. Yes development costs are up but so are the number of gamers buying games more so than ever in history. So they are banking more than ever before. COD 4 sold more than 10 million copies, multiply that by 60 US dollars, that comes out to 600 million dollars!!! B). Well obviously you can argue for the cause that Modern Warfare II is going to be lame and you won't buy it.. But you are mostly lying to everybody including yourself because .. well I'm no doctor or anything, but I don't think it's going to suck to say the least.

Whoa! First off, you're right about us being nothing more than money pants to the publishers. That is why they need us as much as we need them. That is why there is a balance between the two sides, and the reason why games have flourished over the years.

Since Activision is breaking the equilibrium, we have to do something to restore that stable state, don't we? Here's 2 reasons why boycotting the game is not retarded -

A.)What the hell does suits have to do with the game? Everything. From how much content the game can have on launch day to where it will be shipped, how much it will cost, etc. So, we are actually attacking the right people. Devs get paid to make a game, publishers reap the profits from it.

B.)If the petition mentioned the 'lack of quality' of the game as the main cause of the boycott, i wouldn't have signed at all. So no, it's only a very few people that are worried about the content of the game. The rest of us are much more concerned about the greedy price hiking by the 'suits', and their lack of respect for customers as shown by their 'boss' himself.

Advice :- Please read the user comments & especially the petition note a bit more carefully next time before condemning it as 'retarded'.

i can't believe how low Activision can go, in such hard times for everyone reguardless of what platform you play on to up the price is shameless.

They don't deserve that extra 10 dollars, pounds what ever currency you use for nothing that ground breaking, i have NO DOUBT that modern warfare 2 will live up to the orginal modern warfare standards which everyone loved so much and go beyond in some cases but it's SHAME that ruined it with greed.

i will admit i have pre-ordered my copie at Argos due to they had 20% off pre-ordered games offer and the game was still at the normal £39.99 price but now the normal price at argos is £48.99.

I was not going to get MW2 - i bought cod4 and skipped WaW-- Im really just posting here to say that I support people making a decision and sticking with it. they deserve it they think that they are better than all other developers when the graphics on cod 4 and waw are the same and have some of the worst textures i have seen they make up for it with a addictive online which laggs if 1 person has a bad connection and then they are annoyed with Sony for over pricing when they are pricing their game £55 when killzone 2 has better graphics including textures and a large online with 16 extra players and it has never lagged with me and it is way cheaper and never had such a ridiculous starting price tag
