Killzone 2 to outdo Halo 3 in sales? Underground Hype 8

This week, AnalogHype is back with another episode of the Underground Hype, the only podcast that is scientifically proven to make you wanna slap yo' mama... or something. When Killzone comes out and it doesn't outsell Halo please don't look at Sony fanboys like they were saying it, it's the media that's saying it. I think the game will sell well but I be even surprised if it did Gears' numbers. Even though it's Killzone 2, I still think of it as a new ip because there are still alot of people who don't know about Killzone outside of the internet. Preorders are looking good so far but it would also help if the ps3 was a litlle cheaper. I think it should sell well though.

You know, for all intents and purposes it should dethrone Halo 3, but it won't. Here's why:

Advertising. How many Killzone commercials have you seen? I watch a lot of shows that would be perfect advertising for this game (24, Fringe, Burn Notice, etc.) that cater to their specific demographic, but I have yet to see a Killzone commercial TV. The only reason I know anything about it is because I visit a number of hardcore gaming websites.

Sony needs to market. They can't sit back on their haunches and expect the hardcore and hardcore alone to spread the word for them. They need to keep with the competition and sell their product. If they did, and the game turns out good, (not saying it won't, I just haven't personally played it yet) not only would it topple Halo 3, it would directly cause a console sales resurgence.

KZ2 will not sell as many as Halo for one simple reason! Because Halo and Gears is all MS has. They used to have Knights of the Old Republic but have lost that studio. Halo is their Mario, Gears is their Zelda simple as that. Sony has MGS, Grand T, Jax and Dexter and Kratos for now, they used to have GTA and FF, but they lost them. Not to say R&C, Sackboy and Nathan Drake could be added to that list, but they are not the big reason to pick up a PS3 at this time. Sorry Fanboys that is the truth! You buy a 360 for their shooters and a PS3 for their diversity.

No, I am saying that just about everyone who owned an original Xbox owned Halo or Halo 2. Don't get me wrong I am not dissing the franchise, at all, it defined online console FPS for years (Socom did good for 3rd person shooters). So when people picked up the 360 Most of those people where already halo fans. Look Halo is MS's Mario ok, do I need to point out that MS is releasing 2 Halo games this year and are rumored to have tapped Gearbox to do Halo 4 and Peter Jackson to create Halo Chronicles? Just like almost everyone who owned an original NES owned Super Mario 1, 2 and 3. And they continue to pick up every iteration afterward.

So my point is that the PS brand got it's install base by a cluster of different games, PS1 was Crash, RE, MGS and FF7. Not everyone who owned a PS had all of those games, most got it based on one or two of those titles. Same with PS2, People picked up PS2 for GTA3, Grand Tar., MGS2, or FF10. OK Sony doesn't have that game that half of their console owners have a copy of, the only thing that is close is GTA and GT. PS has always been know for having the best variety for 3 straight generations now, we have seen this. So that is why I think KZ2 will not sell as much as Halo because the PS3 install base is so varied.

Xbox 360 has the highest game-attach rate in the history of gaming. Halo 3 set all time industry sales records.

Halo 3 has sold 9 Million Copies to date. That is Almost as many as Resistance, MGS4 and Motorstorm **COMBINED**.

There are ~28M Xbox 360s in the world.
There are ~17M PS3s in the world.

The very question posed here is 100% ridiculous troll.

There is -ZERO- chance that KZ2 will outsell Halo 3. Not. Going. To. Happen.

I think you'll find there's a little more then 17 million ps3 consoles sold world wide. I don't know the exact estimate but it's definately a few million more.

And please don't take this blog as the entire opinion of the sony fanboy population. I'm a little bit of a sony head, but even I can admit there's no way Killzone 2 will sell like halo 3. But I can say that quite comfortably because we all know sales don't = quality.

As for the actual quality of the game, I haven't played either titles but it's looking like Killzone is going to set the benchmark quite high, and that's good for everyone.

you do know that 9 milion, which I doubt, is still only half of what Nintendogs, Wii Fit and Super Smash brothers have sold. And the "attach rate that you mention was from 2007, last year it was found that once Sony's library started to expand so did the attach rate. And at the moment I believe the attach rates of the 360 and PS3 are close + add to the fact that we buy Blu-rays as well. So PS3 owners actually spend more which makes since we are older and have better jobs than you 360 owners.

The only PS3 game that I can see outselling Halo 3 is Gran Turismo 5, because every Gran Turismo game has sold more than 8 million copies, with Gran Turismo 3 topping out at over 14 million copies.

Killzone 2 will not outsell Halo 3. Halo had been an established (and very hyped) series. It is one of the Xbox's flagship series. Not to mention, it has seeped into mainstream culture.

Killzone on the other hand is neither of those. It is hyped very much inside the gaming community, but people on the outside probably have never heard of it. It may be the best shooter ever, but it simply doesn't have the base to outsell Halo.

Case in point, several friends of mine who game but do not dabble in gaming communities such as this. None of them share my enthusiasm for the game because they simply don't know it exists.

Killzone 2 has more mature audience,as opposed to the halo series which has more 12 years kids. Since the kids don't have to take money out of their pockets when buying halo, it is only natural that halo 3 would sell more than killzone 2. I am not saying that 12 years old don't buy killzone2, but I think it's obvious that the halo series has a younger fanbase.

However, in terms of quality, based on what I have seen so far, killzone 2 has the upper edge.

The easy answer is...HELL NO. And realistically, it can't...there is 20 mill PS3 out in the market. Killzone 2 won't sell to 50% of the user base, that's unheard of.

Especially considering FPS appeals to NA/Europe, and not Japan, so take out 3 million..

So at best Killzone has a 17 million user base to sell it's game to, and it's probably smaller, as some people just bought PS3 for an awesome/cheap blu-ray player, or got it part of their HDTV package, and don't know much about gaming, or don't care about hardcore gaming (Re:Killzone).

I think Sony should be happy if they even achieve 10% of their user base attach rate... ie somewhere from 1.7 to 2 million total sales.

Anything else they should deem as a run away success...anything short of 500 K, and they must scratch their heads though.

Fanbase and Marketing.

Halo has a Bigger fanbase than Killzone, right there Halo sells more. in terms of Marketing, you saw what Microsoft did with Halo 3. what I am saying is this

a game can sell its 10 million copies even if its install base is below 20 million.

Now will Killzone 2 outsell Halo 3, no, because its fanbase is 4x lower than Halo 3's fanbase.

But Killzone 2 will sell very well (I predict 5-6 million copies+) considering the hype that its carrying, the near perfect ratings that its getting, its fanbase who are eagerly waiting to get the game. these epic numbers that the Halo 3 has will happen to the Killzone series if theres a killzone 3 in the future, but it all depends on how the people would react to KZ 2.

Now what game can stand up to Halo 3 sales, My answer GT5 or GOW3. These games have a fanbase that rivals that to Halo 3's fanbase and they get marketed like Hell.

I seen Resistance 2 marketing everywhere yet Halo 3 is still outselling it in some parts of the country and that's with ZERO marketing. People don't remember commercials from a year ago. Halo 3 is just a fantastic game and great games sell well over time. And God of War has never been a huge seller. God of War 2 only sold about 3-4 million to a user base of a 100 million. Because of what everybody has been saying already. People knew about Halo 3 before the game came out. Xbox owners were waiting for it and MS really did not need much marketing because Halo was already established as the flagship title for the 360. Hype helped somewhat to the 8MM in sales, but it was Halo being an established title...

KZ2 on the other hand has not established itself because the first game has not established itself. I can see the game selling 2MM, but I'd be really surprised if it sold 4-6MM...Yes everybody can say all their friends have reserved it blah blah blah, but in reality all the hype on this game is the internet, most people that dont go online as much or read gaming sites will not know much about the title...Marketing could help, but look at Mirrors Edge...That game was marketed like crazy and I dont think it did so well...

Halo 3 was the biggest over hyped piece of crap to ever come out of video game history, just about every Xbox owner i know said it wasn't what they thought it would be and that the graphics sucked ass. -Killzone is not a well known IP.
-The first game was mediocre.
-Sony haven't spent upwards of 30million on marketing (as MS did with Halo 3). It doesn't matter how good a game looks or plays if no one knows about it.
-The number of people I know with a PS3 is quite small but I am the only one even thinking of buying it - when Halo 3 was announced everyone I knew who had a 360 bought it. There really doesn't seem to be much word of mouth buzz around the game outsid eof the hardcore gamers.

I think KZ2 will sell similar numbers to MGS4 - but it wouldn't surprise me if it was less (or even a lot less).

The only people who will be 'shocked' that KZ2 hasn't sold more than Halo 3 will be the XBox fanboys who are just salivating at the prospect of rubbing Sony fanboy's faces in it! :)

for many reasons Killzone 2 will not outsell Halo. 1st, more 360 owners & halo being the biggest hit. 2nd Halo has been hyped as best xbox game series ever & Gears doesn't come close. 3rd fanbase, my guess is most Killzone 2 preorders are from CoD, Resistance & SOCOM players, not a lot of Killzone players & thats the difference.

Halo fanbase has continued with 3 games in 6 years were Killzone had liberation & not a massive title to bridge them. The Killzone franchise isn't as recognized as Halo. I'll likely be a better game but Halo 3 has already sold 9 million units world wide. YES, I am a Sony fan. My reason is because I feel that Sony (And Nintendo) delivers quality gaming products, with extremely low defects in their units. Not hating on MS, but I will only buy it when the system goes to $149.99, because I feel that the RROD thing is bad for bossiness.

Also, MS did not even try to implement Blu-ray, another thing that bothers me. (THERE IS NO PATENT ON BLU-RAY TECH...EVEN Insignia and sylvaina has a blu-ray system on the market!) I believe that system sales are based upon release windows. Take the 360 for instance. MS had gamers wait all of 2008 for fable 2, Gears 2, and Left 4 Dead. All great games YES, but did we really need to wait a whole year? Judging by the quality of Gears and L4D, it's fair to say that these games didn't receive much tender love and care. (Lag/serious shotgun host issues with Gears 2, crazy short Left 4 Dead campaign...which looks like it was latterly streamed from the PC via USB flash drive.)

I give Nintendo it's credit. Even though MOST of their games are not good, at least they present a ton of them to their customers, without making them wait forever. Sony's PS1 and PS2 dominated because they brought out games damn near every other week! MS could do that, but their track record proves that they want to suck every dime out of their customers, without delivering the best possible quality. I really don't even know what to say. I guess the only thing you really can say is that if you think Killzone 2 is going to even come close to Halo numbers you are not very smart at all.

Killzone 2 is essentially a brand new IP thanks to the mediocrity that was Killzone 1. It wasn't good, at all. That simple fact coupled with its poor showing at retail has prevented the Killzone franchise from being a mainstream, popular gaming entity ala Gears of War or the Halo series.

Second, Killzone 2 is shaping up to be a spectacular game, so don't confuse this with me saying Killzone 2 sucks or anyting. I havent played the campaign at all, but I did play quite a bit of the multiplayer in the beta and it definately has the potential to be a great game. Its not going to bring anything new to the table, but it doesn't have to.

With that said, no matter how good or bad it is, it is still being marketed by Sony and as we have seen already that is not a good thing. AT ALL and even the most disturbed Sony fanboys know it.

Finally, Killzone 2 is on the PS3 and the PS3's install base is poor, EXTREMELY POOR. Oh, and did I mention how mediocre the original Killzone was? Sorry but thats the facts

Halo was fun when it first came out the second game was just as fun the third game was betterlooking and just as fun there was no innovation between the second halo and the third and very little between the first and second.

Killzone one was designed as a linear fist person shooter and the gameplay as far as moving around gose was ok not great but ok. the shooting was much more realistic then any game I had ever played till its release as anyone who has shot an automatic gun can tell you. the graphics of the original were nice and the story to me was far more realistic and in depth then HALO ever was or could be. and the MP mode was pretty nice for the PS2 and you could always use bots if you did not have access to the web

Because I know for a FACT that Killzone 2 will never sell more than Halo 3. Do sales make it the better game?? NO.

alright...I haven't read all the comments...

I'd just like to address the Blu-ray comments made in this podcast....

Blu-ray isn't just for movies...it's a capacity...25GB per disc or 50GB per DL disc...

if the generation following this one will move forward...they will have to boost up the capacity.....

...whether or not it will be Blu-ray is another question, but to say that Blu-ray isn't necessary right now can be a pretty good assessment...

but try saying this in a year from now....

and also onto the systems sold.....both consoles are doing well in spite of the recession....someone was making it sound like the PS3 is in trouble when none of these systems are in trouble like the Dreamcast was..
