Microsoft has doubled down on its intention to bring Activision games to its premium subscription service, Xbox Game Pass.

Jeez how many more studios need to close to do this.

Zeref17d ago

Maybe these studios didn't close because of GamePass? Have you thought about that?

Cacabunga17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

COD is one of the worst series in gaming.. EA had a chance in gold to overtake COD but chose to kill Battlefield and Medal of Honor

wesnytsfs17d ago

@Cacabunga, That is your opinion which is highly in the minority since COD is always one of the best sellers yearly. We all have games we like, and do not like.

Tankbusta4017d ago

@Zeref

All your downvoters are crying about the Redfall studio but didn't purchase the game

lodossrage17d ago

@Tankbusta40

But why would they purchase anything?

Microsoft for the past 9 years has conditioned their customers to want everything for pennies on the dollar instead of buying.

How many copies can any game sell when the company that supposedly wants sales is telling people
A- we don't care about sales, just engagement
and
B- constantly telling the customers to get it day 1 for pennies on the dollar via gamepass

They literally cannibalized their own potential sales and then take it out of studios for not selling. That doesn't make sense.

XiNatsuDragnel17d ago

Nii San
Gamepass has cannibal sales even Phil said so and unfortunately man there going to eat and eat more studios until they're satisfied

-Foxtrot17d ago

@Tankbusta40

Maybe people just give a shit about people losing their jobs

Going off reports people within the studio were pretty open about not being comfortable creating an online game as there was development issues with never doing one before, so when MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have went around their studios to see how they were doing and allowed them to just make something they were comfortable with, restarting development on it. It started development in 2018 after Prey released in 2017 and after 5 years it was still a shit show, they could have stopped it at anytime.

Clearly Bethesda were being a bit dickish to them before Microsoft making them work on an online game and even told them that Prey had to be called Prey despite the fact none of them in the studio wanted to call it that yet they were forced to. However Microsoft coming in should have listened to their concerns and they clearly didn't give a shit.

Cacabunga17d ago

@wesny

COD had nothing to offer since MW2 on PS3/360. Victim of its own success and didnt know how to keep the creativity going.
They for sure built a massive name, but that is what most are going for. Like FIFA where even the menus are the same since 2008 i believe

Crows9017d ago

@tankbusta

Sorry but why would you buy a bad game on purpose? That's stupid.

I purchased prey and dishonored. So yeah. Support doesn't mean buy bad games. Xbox released that game in that state...they're at fault.

Redgrave17d ago

Naturally, you'd appear amidst the current events and say nothing of substance.

Lightning7717d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Please Sweet stop damage controlling. If you're a real Xbox fan you would stop defending Ms destroying everything.

These suits want Xbox to make COD MONEY. After Xbox showcase next month you better think about how many of those studios will get shut down on the near future.

Nxile, Obsidian, The Initiative etc. Hell you better start advertising gamepass to all your friends because MS sure as hell won't.

So they decided to say yes to COD on gamepass they made up their mind. Cool they're doing at they promised everyone in the first place, grats.

Blad3runner0017d ago

“ COD is always one of the best sellers yearly.”

How many of those sales are from casuals? All this means is there is a lot of people with bad taste in games.

Sales does not equal quality.

neutralgamer199217d ago

Zeref

Come on man. I guess now some people have figured out how to defend a multi trillion corporation. GP can’t be sustained with AAA games and if that’s how they will proceed than a lot more closures are ahead. Xbox use to be a meaningless brand for MS but when MS invests 100 billion they expect results. So the days of GP seeing all AAA games day one are really coming to and end a lot sooner than People want to believe

Xbox gamers don’t buy a lot of games and instead wait for games to end up on GP. For games to end up on GP MS has to pay for content. Take two ceo was right al along. GP makes sense for smaller games and games which could use more exposure but well know AAA IP’s don’t need to be on GP day one. There is a reason we are closer to a day when we will see gears of war on PlayStation and Nintendo because MS needs to sell games to other platforms. Phil got his users hooked on GP and now they don’t but a lot of games. That’s why we have publishers wondering if it’s even worth being a game to Xbox when chances are it may not even cover the development costs of porting the game

But keep doing you because to Xbox fans GP is the be all end all and they aren’t willing to budge. We are seeing real world affects of GP on developers

Christopher16d ago

There's been a ton of thought about it. Most people definitely agree Game Pass had something to do with it, as well as the ABK purchase. Thanks for asking, though.

gleepot17d ago

That's not why they closed, though. They closed for other silly reasons that don't make much sense.

VenomUK17d ago

Poor journalism by Twisted Voxel’s Muhamed Ali Bari. If you’re going to write that Microsoft has doubled down then include a specific quote from Sara Bond where she said this as evidence. without it you are interpreting her words to create a headline to fit a narrative.

shinoff218318d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Yay cod.

I cannot fathom why people give a fk about cod(Xbox, ps, and PC players). Sure acti has others games but they haven't been the same in so many years.

When asked about Xbox games going to other platforms. She absolutely sidestepped and avoided answering the actual question.

Jeez just tell the base already

ocelot0717d ago

About that last part the silence is deafening.

She could of simply said. Other than COD we have no plans to bring anymore games to other platforms other than windows and Xbox.

Eonjay17d ago

I'm not sure why this is a question anymore. All console sales are down and none more than the Xbox. So of course they are putting all their games on PlayStation eventually. I do agree with you that her avoidance is silly and it really makes it look like they thing the base is stupid. Or maybe they really don't care about what the base thinks at all. Maybe they are embarrassed to admit that GamePass was really a bad plan from the start and they completely messed up predictions.

ocelot0717d ago

@Eonjay

Don't think they can ever come out and say "gamepass has hurt Xbox". The amount of backlash would be insane.

I don't even think they can change gamepass (I think they would love to at this point). If they come out and say yer from now on more more days one games instead trials will replace them. Or you not certain games will come to gamepass day one (not cod).

fsfsxii17d ago

Its simply the most content rich and fun shooter on the market, how is that hard to understand? All the criticism cod receives is honestly jealousy that its so consistent.

-Foxtrot17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Lmao.

Jealousy? Sure bro...

shinoff218317d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I'm not jealous of cod. Trust me lol. I don't even like fps. Especially military shooters. Their overplayed and have worn out their welcome. Now a fps like bioshock. Hell yea more then welcome.

Rutaprkl17d ago

You fanboys are so delusional. Keep believing.

redrum0617d ago

Because the majority of gamers are just casual gamers that are not as interested in trying out newer/other stuff than what they already know.
It's fun for a quick 0,5/1 hr gaming sessions, like FIFA, which is why its succesfull

anast17d ago

notachance17d ago

lol the whole point of annual CoD is to make its fans buy the game anew again every year, if it comes to gamepass it’d be more cost efficient to never make a new CoD again and just make it a long term game like fortnite or counter strike.

yeah I can just see CoD take that route and close 2 studios out of 3. We’ll see.

Profchaos17d ago

Notice this years game is absent from the image

MrBeatdown17d ago

Is this even a real image? I think it's just some mock up for clicks.

Seraphim17d ago

The whole point of annual CoD now isn't games sales. It's MTs. These publishers/games are making money hand over fist on MTs, not from selling games. This is why the entire industry has been pushing monetization of everything..... mts made up 61% of Acti-Blizz income in 2021.

PassNextquestion17d ago

What does MT stand for? Multiplayer transactions..or something along the lines of engagement with the game

Seraphim17d ago

@PassNext.... - Micro transactions. MT, MTX, whatever they abbreviate them as.... or perhaps we can start calling them Macro transactions now that so many games are charging $20+ for something like a skin....

jwillj2k417d ago

Yessss put COD on gamepass and destroy its worth. Keep being dumb Microsoft we love it!!

anast17d ago

Profchaos already answered this issue.

‘Hellblade 2’ Launches As The 23rd Most-Played Xbox Game, What Does That Mean?

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 launched last week to solid reviews from both fans and players. But its playercount? That's another story.

helicoptergirl6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

That's awful. This combined with the really low Steam numbers paint a disastrous picture imo. Really bad timing too because Tango was closed down for a similar thing. Great reviewed game, and low sales and/or player count. Hi-Fi Rush reviewed a hell of a lot better and it was widely loved by everyone, Hellblade 2 nowhere near that.

I know the rumor is that the studio has their next game already green-lit, but if I worked at Tango, I would be furious. "Why do they survive while we get binned?" I'd be telling myself.

But the suit woman will have you believe "Oh we have different metrics for the success of one studio compared to another studio. We judge each studio and game on their own set criteria" or something like that, I'm paraphrasing here but you get the idea. But no one who works there knows what the hell that even means. I mean the DLC for Redfall was getting worked on days before they even got the news their studio was getting dumped in the trash. So what are these mysterious metrics to let studios survive and others perish? I bet this is all hogwash, I bet MS don't even really know. They just had to make cuts and certain studios just found their way on the chopping block. Someone had to bite the dust, why not you?

Well I bet all this does nothing for the confidence of other employees in other studios. The truth is you have no idea where your career will be in a year from now working at one of their studios that aren't the mega big ones. MS just have too many studios to manage efficiently. "We'll just throw money at them and buy them and worry about the details later on. I mean we can do it, we're Microsoft."

darthv725h ago

...have you seen what the top 10 consists of? Its things like fortnite, roblox, CoD, apex... etc. This being a new game that has a niche appeal is actually surprising to see at 23. Its also the 33rd top paid game on the PC through the MS store.

tay87015h ago

Those are dreadful numbers any way you slice it dude. They hyped this game to hell for the last 4 plus yrs. It was supposed to be xboxs big game this yr. Ninja Theory is probably sweating right now.

Scissorman4h ago

And it's already slipped out of the Top 100 on Steam. Meanwhile a port of the 4-year old Ghost of Tsushima is sitting comfortably at #8.

RiseNShine4h ago

One of the biggest games of the year, a multi million sequel and heavily advertised game, at 23 most played? There's no way to justify those numbers.

darthv724h ago

^^heavily advertised game...?

I mean, I knew the game was coming but outside of a boot screen ad for it, there has been little to no marketing. And yet it still managed 23rd. Make of that what you will.

Elda3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Here in the East Coast on NY/NJ on cable tv Hellblade 2 has been advertised pretty well. I see the commercials every day at least 3 times a day for the past 3 weeks. It's even advertised as YT commercials.

Chevalier2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

What an idiotic comment. Let me guess the next comment would be GTA V outsold everything so....

Absolutely terrible numbers all round for this game. Ghost of Tsushima at number 8. Good games going to sell regardless of excuses

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 2h ago
RpgSama3h ago

What a disaster, 2 failures in a row for Ninja Theory, first Bleeding edge, now Hellblade 2, any way you slice it these are not the numbers the most awaited game of the year for Xbox should show (before Activision purchase), also player numbers is extremely low and even more surprising considering is day 1 on gamepass.

Terry_B6h ago

It means that it will be the..50th? 75th? most played xbox game in June.

CrimsonWing695h ago

That people played it 🤷‍♂️

Scissorman5h ago

If this game cost more and took longer to develop than Hi-Fi Rush, then I would worry if I were Ninja Theory. Projects may have been greenlit, but the increased scrutiny over at MS may very well put them on the chopping block. The incredible irony here is that it was PlayStation players that pushed the original game passed its 1 million copies sold milestone. With that purchasing power cut out, and the Game Pass effect having trained Xbox players to not purchase games, it seems that the sequel may have been set-up for failure.

italiangamer4h ago

And that's exactly what pisses me off about Hellblade 2 not being on PlayStation, Sony promoted the original game and I bought it basically on D1 back in the day because I liked what I saw and ended up really enjoying it!
I really hope Hellblade 2 is next on the porting list because I would buy it in a heartbeat, asshole microsoft robbed me of this game!

darthv724h ago

Just get an xbox. Then it will be YOU that is robbing Microsoft. Gamepass is a hell of a deal and an addictive one at that.

AndrewM4h ago

No darth, buying an Xbox only helps xbox lol he can play gamepass on com if he wants to take advantage of them destroying themselves.

Here's hoping for a drop of all 19 of the other cod games on gamepass. That would be a wild trip down memory lane.

1Victor6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Rip Xbox 😭 this will be the point when you can say it was Microsoft biggest mistake that cost Phil head to roll when the investors expect to see a billion on sale and get 1/3 only from PS.
Anyway congratulations to all those CoD players that have game pass.
Edit: never mind is black ops 6 but if they do this for the main cod it’s goodbye Phil

VenomUK6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I'm not sure how this move will play out but I do think it could devalue the Call of Duty brand Microsoft paid so much for.

Also, if after the release Microsoft compares sales revenue of the game on Xbox compared to last year, and then logically it will be less as Xbox gamers will be able to get it for 'free'. If it then looks to see if Game Pass new subscriber revenue makes up for the loss profits - if it doesn't It could potentially be the nail in the coffin for the Xbox console business and Game Pass.

crazyCoconuts4h ago

So normally I'd just buy COD every year. Now if they keep the prices the same, I might get PC GamePass. The way I see it, I get GamePass for a difference of $50/year. And they would get $50 from me that maybe I would have otherwise not spent with them. It's not obvious to me whether it's a bad move or not

ocelot078h ago

After being burnt with MW3 (really enjoyed mw2019 and MW2 (2022) as well as cold war). Guess I can give it ago on pc GP for a month. If I like it buy it on PS5 or PC or don't if I don't like it. I may dislike gamepass. But since it's Microsoft who potentially looses out on my money I don't mind.

8h ago
8h ago
Andrew3367h ago

They aren't gonna "loose" out on your money.

darthv727h ago

There is nothing to dislike about Gamepass. People can dislike the company behind it but fundamentally the service is excellent. I truly do not care about the politics behind it... I just like what it offers.

ocelot076h ago

That's fair. I just don't like how it's pretty much killed Xbox as a platform. Because of it and in my honest opinion Xbox is now a service rather than a platform. Say what you will about the Xbox one it didn't do as well as the PS4 but before gamepass at least people where paying for the games. Now it's ill just rent on gamepass and if it ain't on gamepass I'll wait untill it's on gamepass.

shinoff21834h ago

It's changed a whole bases buying power. It's not good no matter how you look at it. Sure your looking at it as a consumer but when it goes under, no more consumer

6h ago
ThinkThink5h ago

Should probably just buy it on xbox with the 20% gamepass discount otherwise you'll be giving Microsoft more of your money twice.

ocelot074h ago

If the game is good then I have no issues paying for it on my preferred platform.

Obscure_Observer8h ago

Nice!

All those rumors were dead wrong and COD fans will be able to play Black Ops 6 day one on Gamepass!

rippermcrip7h ago

This doesn't prove or disprove anything about the rumors of either a price increase or a new tier.

darthv727h ago

...true, but those were separate rumors. The one OO is directly referring to was the idea that CoD would be coming to GP as a result of the merger. To which we can put that one to bed now with this news.

VenomUK6h ago

@Obscure_Observer There's nothing wrong with being a consumer and being delighted that you be able to play it for free. But like with the many Xbox YouTubers who celebrated the ABK purchase by Microsoft who didn't consider the possible negative consequences for the console platform they enjoy most, I wonder if you have considered this could be a damaging move for the Xbox ecosystem? It might not be, it might turn out to be a genius move! It could be Phil Spener's last hurrah. Come Christmas when it is bundled free with new Xboxs via a Game Pass trial it will definitely shift units - but will it be enough to move PlayStation-exclusive owners to buy it and significantly boost the Xbox Series S/X market share?

Obscure_Observer5h ago

@rippermcrip

"This doesn't prove or disprove anything about the rumors of either a price increase or a new tier."

You can ask Geoff Keighley about that:

"Microsoft has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be playable on Xbox and PC for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass for Console members.

"BTW per Microsoft, the pricing on tiers is:

Game Pass Ultimate - $16.99 USD/month
Game Pass for Console - $10.99 USD/month
PC Game Pass - $9.99 USD/month
Game Pass Core - $9.99 USD/month OR $59.99/year"

https://x.com/geoffkeighley...

PhillyDonJawn4h ago

I can see gamepass ultimate being $20.99 (the price of core and GP individually together) and GP solo $13.99 GP PC $11.99

Outside_ofthe_Box8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

So Microsoft is willing to take a financial hit? Could have done that with Tango. This was the correct move. Any other move would have piled on what happened recently whether it be, price increase, new tier, or not releasing it on GP at all.

darthv727h ago

What happened with Tango, while unfortunate, was done at the discretion of Bethesda. We don't know what the conditions of the MS/Bethesda merger are but can assume there is still some semblance of autonomy where they can make certain decisions without the approval of MS.

On the flip side, its a shame that MS was not inclined to offer TG a place under their own direct management like NT has. As for this CoD deal... that too could be under some special consideration by ABK as part of their merger as well. MS looks to benefit either way due to possible increased subs/sales of GP/XB as well as sales to PC/Ps users.

Lightning775h ago

If they grow gamepass because of COD, have Another paid tier and selling the game on PS5 and last gen consoles.

Especially if this COD is the best one in ages, which equals more sales I have a hard time seeing how this game will take any financial hit. Whatever potential loss would pay itself back 10 fold.

Huey_My_D_Long7h ago

Hmmm, I think they will announce a price hike in between now and BO6 coming out.

VR27h ago

Most certainly, tbh I thought they were going to go the 2 tier route, with game pass premium ONLY having cod as part of the subscription and the lower tier you'd have to buy it discounted at like £50
