Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons remake - UE5 Nanite and Lumen come at a heavy cost

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons has been remade for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S - but is the new version any good?

Even to this day, developer Starbreeze Studios' 2013 classic Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is fondly remembered. This adventure puzzler was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 just months before the next console generation, and packed a real emotional punch for those that caught it. Jump forward eleven years and we have a new remake for a new generation on PS5, Series X and Series S - so how does it hold up on new platforms, including the less powerful Series S, across both performance and quality modes?

No but the series S did

"Series S fares rather worse, with its 30fps mode ranging from 454p to 720p"

"Enhance", but not really.

Why would they kill off the original Art Style and Design? Imagine if they have kept that Painterly style look but with the power of Unreal 5 and its superior Effects, Lighting and Shaders? It would've looked outstanding. As it is? Meh borderline Asset Flip.

What a boneheaded decision.

One of the worst remake/remaster decisions I've seen to what I consider a classic.

A perfect example of why chasing realist graphics in games will never beat having an interesting visual style.

If they went with a simpler aesthetic (something midway toward Jusant) they could've maybe hit 60fps more often

i feel like the og art style suited the gameplay more than this realist look.

Review - Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake (Xbox Series X) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Heidi Hawes: "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is a fine game, and one I recommend playing. What disappoints me most is just how little was done to this version to set itself apart from the original. The gameplay remains untouched, other than a completely clunky and bizarre co-op mode. The main changes were an enhanced soundtrack and graphics, but the large majority of the game is exactly the same as it was before. If you’ve never played this classic previously, then Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is definitely worth your time. On the other hand, if you have played the original before, then there’s little reason for you to check out this remake, unless you simply feel like experiencing the game again."
