Redfall Isn't Using Unreal Engine 5 After All

Luis Joshua Gutierrez writes: As we inch closer to the release date of Arkane Studios' first-person shooter Redfall, it has been confirmed that it will not be using Unreal Engine 5.

Flawlessmic445d ago (Edited 445d ago )

So why lie this whole time and let everyone believe it was unreal engine 5 up until 2 months from launch even though you knew this was the case the whole time.

Poor form and explains why it doesn't look that great.

I mean im still looking forward to the game, but wish ms studios would be more upfront about this stuff, same goes for gameplay showings, they never specify if the gameplay is being shown on a PC or Xbox which Sony at least does specify what the gameplay is running off at the time.

Very misleading.

gangsta_red445d ago

They had it on their actual forums for some time now that they were using Unreal Engine 4. I think other websites jumped the gun and just assumed that Redfall would be using UE 5. Even the actual article states the same...

"It is worth mentioning that Arkane has said in the past that they wouldn't be using Unreal Engine 5. Over on the Redfall FAQ page, you'll find a question asking, "What game engine is Redfall utilizing?" with the answer being Unreal Engine 4."

Flawlessmic445d ago (Edited 445d ago )

Ok so technically they put it in the fine print, but considering basically every major news site and gamer, was under the assumption it was UE5 and they would be fully aware of that they could've clarified this sooner.

if does feel like they were happy for people to assume that to gain further attention and just hide the info somewhere theres not a lot of traffic.

either way game looks pretty good and its arkane, so hasn't diminished me looking forward to it.

When was that information published, @red? Because clearly IGN are considering this news. Harvey Smith outright said they'd have upgraded to U5 if they'd had more time.

Sounds more like they're being squeezed to plug the gap in the xbox release schedule to me, but they'll never outright say that and betray their new masters. Harvey has already been a little liberal with the truth for Microsoft's liking, I'm sure.

gangsta_red444d ago

@Sully

Production of the game started before the MS purchase. They started with UE4 engine, switching to UE5 would have pushed the game back even more. He even states they were halfway through production already when UE5 was released, how in the world does that sound like they were being squeezed?

I know you like to think that everything is Microsoft's fault but try and push aside that extreme bias against MS to think a bit more clearly and rationally.

SullysCigar444d ago (Edited 444d ago )

^ Nah, you're right @red, they're probably just working to their own pace and being left to their own devices under Microsoft, no worries about game scheduling. /S

Maybe if you weren't so quick to defend Microsoft's faults you could think a bit more clearly and rationally. This development has been fraught with issues, from dumping PS5 development over a year in, to being purchased by the Monopoly Guy, to working through lockdowns - all of which would have affected development time and only one of them was outside Microsoft's control.

How long would it take to move it into U5, as would be the Creative Director's preference? I'm asking you, because apparently you're the guy with all the answers - although you still haven't clarified when U4 was published on their site or why IGN thinks this is news and you don't... Hit up one of your colleagues at Microsoft and ask them about U4 to U5 timescales, I'm genuinely curious to understand this.

gangsta_red444d ago

@sully

"Maybe if you weren't so quick to defend Microsoft's faults you could think a bit more clearly and rationally. "

I always love people who leave this line after going on a complete nonsensical tirade against MS, especially when the issue has nothing to do with MS.
Nobody is defending MS, I'm taking information that is available, right there in front of everyone to read and literally telling you what it is.

It's you who's making up all these wild stories and desperately blaming everything on MS. And honestly there's no point in telling you anything more, the actual creative director in the article is telling you what happened, but your choosing to ignore that and in favor of making up your own science fiction chain of events that it's all Microsoft's fault...so if you can't even believe the actual creative director of Redfall, why in the hell would I try and convince you?

DOMination-444d ago

You guys always have mad conspiracies when it comes to Microsoft. This game and Starfield have both had significant delays under their watch. There’s no reason to suggest MS is forcing it to be rushed out. Or at least, no more than any other publisher.

Christopher444d ago

***but considering basically every major news site and gamer, was under the assumption it was UE5***

It's their fault that journalists and gamers do what they always do and run with rumors and half-truths from randos on the Internet.

--Onilink--444d ago (Edited 444d ago )

@SullysCigar

“ This development has been fraught with issues, from dumping PS5 development over a year in”

Please tell me this is some kind of joke hahaha.

Do you seriously believe that within 1 year of development anything specific had even been done for ANY particular platform? Within 1 year of development there’s barely anything remotely playable for most games. Dropping any kind of platform on any game that early, if anything, is just a significantly reduced workload for the developers. Certainly not what you would call an issue…

Major news Sites?, Don't mistake popularity for credibility. These are idiots, writing these articles.
They did not hide any info, the journalist wrote the articles without proper research. All it takes is a bit of a google search but they won't do that because their content manipulates the information for their audience.

CrimsonWing69444d ago (Edited 444d ago )

This! I blame game journalism and their lack of due diligence.

It’s so frustrating. I can’t tell you the amount of times, on here, that I’ve seen the comment section correct what the journalist posted.

Are there any requirements to being in game journalism? It seems like anyone can do it and you don’t even need to know proper grammatical structure, citing resources, or even doing research.

darthv72444d ago

The misleading part are those who assumed it was UE5. The dev didn't mislead anyone as its clearly right there for all to see. And pushing UE4 to the limits where people thought it was UE5 just shows how talented they really are.

LOGICWINS444d ago

Redfall never looked "current-gen" IMO. I don't recall anyone assuming Redfall was running on UE5.

Andrew336444d ago

22 people agree with this even tho the information is not correct.

porkChop444d ago

No one thought it was UE5. I just tried to find UE5 references regarding Redfall. Other than news saying it *isn't* using UE5, all that's left are random reddit posts and small YouTubers including UE5 tags in some Redfall videos. Arkane never lied or mislead anyone. They said it was UE4 on their website. The game was well in development before UE5 was even ready for devs.

This explains why it's looking a little dated then.

More of an issue is the fact that it's been announced as being 'always online', although I heard a claim they're looking at that. At this point I feel like they're just managing the atmospherics with false hope on that front, but we'll see soon enough.

darthv72444d ago

could you be more optimistic? This is Arkane we are talking about... not 343i. Arkane knows how to deliver the goods.

SullysCigar444d ago

I'll tell you what, darthv72, I'll form my own opinion and you look after yours. Everyone missteps sometimes and Microsoft has had it's paws in this one since development started - which removes past learnings and predictability related to developers from the equation, as we know (see: Rare).

If Arkane said they were looking into removing always online BEFORE Microsoft got involved, I'd have given them the benefit of the doubt. Now? I need hard confirmation, or it's just standard-fare, wishy-washy Microsoft PR spin. Going with Unreal 4 might already indicate the cost drive we've come to expect from straight-to-gamepass games, so no, optimism is out of the window and I'll be keeping a sceptical eye as we move towards release.

tay8701444d ago

Death loop wasn't exactly great. Pretty boring game if u ask me.

Crows90444d ago

Except they've failed with death loop and prey, though I loved it, had serious issues. But yes. I do trust arkane more than 343

Is it a issue? UE4 has been pretty good. Only game I know of that uses UE5 is Fortnite and I can't say I have noticed much difference from when it was using ue4.

Thank you my child god bless you

I'm not interested in this game but i think it's great they added the offline mode for those who are.

darthv729d ago

It was okay at first... once they added the performance update it was definitely better.

TwoPicklesGood10d ago

Bury this turd. It’s only good as a reminder of what devs shouldn’t do.

mkis0079d ago

I hate the concept of an announced final update.

Would It Have Even Mattered If Redfall Were Good?

Even if Redfall were a good game, the closure of Hi-Fi Rush proves even that doesn't matter in the industry.

Profchaos28d ago

Yeah it would have mattered especially since their huge game that year wasn't all that it was cracked up to be remember redfail was almost heavily promoted and hyped not to the level of starfield but still more promoted than the average game.

There was still a decent marketing campaign behind the game I'm sure millions were spent advertising it on websites and I saw a few billboards and bus stop signs in real life

darthv7227d ago

their biggest mistake was showcasing it as being a 60fps game only to release it at 30. That really soured the taste so that when the real 60fps mode was released, many still didnt want to give it a taste. i tierd it at 30... it was okay, but playing it at 60 is a much better experience and a better overall game. Its really not that bad once you get past the drama surrounding its initial release and just play it for what it is. It has some pretty decent aspects but nothing groundbreaking. It feels like a typical fps from the ps360 days... of which there were many.

jwillj2k428d ago

No it wouldn’t matter it wouldn’t bring in enough profit to offset their 100 billion dollar acquisition. It would maybe delay the inevitable by some months.

Profchaos27d ago

Pretty much no game in Bethesda stables makes cod numbers instantly even fallout 4 Bethesda's best selling game sold 12 million at launch and over the next 10 years climbed to over 32 which cod would do rapidly

CrimsonWing6928d ago

I would f*cking think so. Good games are what draws people to your platform. It’s why I adored the 360 era with Gears of War being one of the highlights for me. You make sh*t games and it just makes your platform that much worse and you start gobbling up studios I like and then killing them off it also makes me hate your platform as well… just sayin’

franwex28d ago

Unless the game would’ve been War Zone, or Fortnite level. No. Maybe even Hell divers 2 I doubt would’ve been enough.

Eonjay27d ago

Helldivers 2 realistically has earned about half a billion which is definitely a success considering it probably cost Sony $50 million to make.

However you would still need 140 releases to at least be that successful to break even on a ACT purchase.

This is how you know the goal for Microsoft was to reach those crazy subscribers numbers. Without them the whole plan falls apart.

Exvalos28d ago

No it would not have, the ABK deal was great for Microsoft but horrible for Xbox. Over 100 billion dollars in acquisitions. That money has to be made back. That ABK deal essentially destroyed Xbox as we know it.

A Flawed Game Till The Very End, Redfall Deserved To Die, But Not Arkane Austin

Hanzala from eXputer: "Redfall was a bland, repetitive game with no post-release support; it deserved to die, but why kill Arkane Austin over one mistake?"

z2g31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

What short memories everybody has. According to the internet they became “the worst studio” after redfall… the internet made redfall a bigger deal than redfall just being a shitty game becaus *gasp* Xbox bought them and” just wanted shitty gamepass games so quality wasn’t a priority”.
(The reality was it was just rushed to market to fill a release hole).

Everybody wants Xbox to fail but as soon as closures start happening suddenly that was never the hope at all and Xbox is just evil.

What has happened to humanity. Being so extreme with viewpoints paints everybody into a hypocritical corner where the side of the story your on depends on which side makes Xbox look worse. Read the internet. Your disagrees are lies.

Shame. Gamers never want to accept their role in all the shit.

My heart goes out to those laid off. Not sure why those studios had to close but I suspect they were costing more money to operate than they were brining in revenue. It does cost money to fix games. Cyberpunk’s road to redemption was prob approaching the price of the original game.

That sucks and I’m angry about it but that’s also business and I’m in the same boat myself at my job as we speak… so it’s not like I don’t have sympathy. But I’m tired of the short memories, the lack of true empathy and opinions being driven by branding. Disgusting.

MIDGETonSTILTS1731d ago

People wanted Xbox to succeed, especially after THE biggest media acquisition in history and effectively owning the entire existing Western RPG genre; but we knew they would fail, and they’d drag down an entire genre with them.

Nobody wanted this, but it was foreseen.
