Forza 8 Will Have Realtime Ray Tracing Along With a Full Night and Day Cycle

According to today's Forza Monthly livestream, Forza 8 will feature realtime ray tracing and a new career mode.

z2g715d ago (Edited 715d ago )

Thats awesome, but its not Foza 8. It’s just called Forza Motorsport and is technically being billed as a “reboot” of the franchise and not a sequel or new version of the existing series.

Jin_Sakai715d ago

Forza Motorsport is going to be a sight to behold. Can’t wait!

abstractel714d ago (Edited 714d ago )

Absolutely agree, seeing real-time ray-traced reflections (which absolutely makes sense in a car game), the level of detail in the environments, the lighting, it all looks stunning. I've always rooted for Gran Turismo but I feel Forza has surpassed GT at the moment (unfortunately). Graphically I think latest GT was held back by the cross-gen, but it had other issue as well. Truly hope we start seeing more and more new-gen exclusives soon. Looks like mid/late 2023 they'll start becoming more common.

RaidenBlack715d ago

Honestly I don't see the difference between it being a sequel and a reboot. (aside from marketing/branding)
Forza Moto and GT are sim racers. Every subsequent games in the series are iterative upgrades over the previous one.

porkChop715d ago

It's being billed as an actual reboot because it's switched from competing with GT to competing with more hardcore sims like Assetto Corsa. Even the types of cars Turn 10 is focusing on has changed to more proper race cars. It'll be a pretty different game.

"switched from competing with GT to competing with more hardcore sims like Assetto Corsa"
Is this official or just fan wish?

RaidenBlack715d ago

@porkChop
Ok,
Assetto Corse or Competizione?
If the latter, then you meant to say the Forza Moto Reboot will solely focus on GT3 Endurance racing?
ACC is the official Blancpain GT3 game.

porkChop715d ago

I'm not saying it's focusing on only GT3, obviously we know it isn't from the trailer. That's not what I mean. I mean the level of actual simulation going on. GT7 is certainly no slouch when it comes to simulation. But the shear amount of physics sim going on in FM is getting into hardcore sim territory. Every Forza has had a 2 year dev cycle so far. There's a 6 year gap from FM7 because they've completely rebooted and recreated every system from scratch. Literally triple the dev time.

And if you watch the new Forza Monthly they talk about how the trailer and demo showcase where they're going with the car list to match the new direction. Some staples/classics will still be there of course but they're really focusing on a ton of new/recent GT and DPI.

Si-Fly715d ago

@porkChop .If you think this is going to get anywhere close to the kind of simulation ACC or iRacing offer you are kidding yourself! This will be fantastic but let’s face it still firmly in the sim cafe camp with GT.

mcstorm715d ago

@Si-Fly the difference now is GP is fully on PC and Microsoft and Turn 10 know how they have a market to go for in this space as well as competing with GT.

It will be interesting to see who looks at FM when it is out next year especially on the PC side.

"It's being billed as an actual reboot because it's switched from competing with GT to competing with more hardcore sims like Assetto Corsa."

That´s what I said in another Forza topic and some Playstation fans got mad like feeling personally offended. As you said: This new Forza will take 6 year to be developed in contrast to it´s 2 year dev time latest iterations. It´s an all new, true next gen Forza Motorsport game, with all phisics, driving mechanics, cars, tracks, graphics, weather, shadows, lighting, and day/night circles recreateded and build from the ground up.

This new game also have a new director with a new vision (Chris Esaki) as veteran Forza director Dan Greenawalt steps aside.

It´s gonna be an all new experience for Racing fans and I can´t wait for it.

Knushwood Butt714d ago

Willing to bet not a single one of you posting has played ACC.

If you think that is what the target audience for Forza Motorsport wants or expects, then go play ACC.

Neonridr715d ago

I mean regardless if it's a reboot or whatnot is it not still the 8th entry in the Forza Motorsport series?

aconnellan714d ago

Sure, but do you call the most recent halo ‘Infinite’ or Halo 6? Do you call God Of War 2018 ‘God of War 4’?

Neonridr714d ago

@aconnellan - it's not like a reboot of God of War. How does one reboot a racing game? Can you decide one day to call NHL 23 just NHL? Because it's a reboot?

1Victor714d ago (Edited 714d ago )

Yeah make it less confusing releasing a game every year with the same name, what could go wrong 😂.
GameStop: video game stores employees going to love that one 🤣
I can’t wait to see what they can do to make it look better with day/night transitions hopefully based on your real life time of day

And based on the E3 showing, it also has a river that has the same exact pattern of bubbles that loops over the course of 3 or 4 seconds. It was very distracting for me to see such amazing graphics on-screen, then this river that was completely unrealistic and a glorified moving texture.

EasilyTheBest715d ago

I've heard of nit picking before but that's just ridiculous.
It's a driving game with roads not a Fishing sim.

MasterChief3624715d ago

I'm just saying that it was a bizarrely lazy detail in a sea of so many amazing ones. I want to be clear that I think the game looks amazing and I can't wait for it. Just pointing out, again, a strange counterexample.

thesoftware730715d ago

Wow, best comment ever.

That super realistic water and awesome graphics, and you noticed that it loops.. because when speeding around a track at 100mph, you get to pinpoint each water ripple

MasterChief3624715d ago

I'm actually Jay Garrick, so going so fast that time slows down around me, giving me time to admire / admonish the little things, is a pretty typical event.

CobraKai715d ago

That’s a little too much man. Unless the whole reason you wanna play is to drive by the river and watch the water. In reality, you’re gonna drive passed it in less than 3 seconds.

715d ago
darthv72714d ago

Glad I wasnt the only one who noticed that. Regardless of their looping the water, it did look really nice.

Tedakin714d ago

You're going to be driving 200 mph past those bubbles.....

iplay1up2714d ago

First of all the river was at a fork, and rivers do have a pattern that forms at these points. Secondly if you are driving slow enough to even notice a pattern, you are definitely not going to win the race.

Lightning77714d ago

A river with running water looping. I'm not genius but running water going down a narrow pathway... Is a river. Unless you've see rivers where water I guess, goes into reverse?

Digital foundry claim ray tracing for reflections will only be present in replay modes

Jin_Sakai715d ago (Edited 715d ago )

It’s RTGI for replays.

ProjectVulcan715d ago

The footage shown was on PC. Like Horizon 5 there will no doubt be cutbacks and downgrades for the Series X and S to get real time in gameplay ray tracing. There already was for Horizon 5 just to hit 60FPS on Series X so imagine other things having to be reduced quite a lot to incorporate ray tracing also. Most likely much lower rendering resolution, a big wide dynamic resolution window.

Obscure_Observer714d ago

"Most likely much lower rendering resolution, a big wide dynamic resolution window."

You just forgot to mention that Forza Horizon 5 is a BIG open world racer while Forza Motorsport is a closed circuit racing game which, RT, 60fps and higher resolutions is easier to implement.

ProjectVulcan714d ago (Edited 714d ago )

No, I didn't forget to mention Horizon 5 is open world, because it's not really relevant anymore. Not in the era where you have consoles with SSDs that can stream assets in with 2GB/s+ bandwidth.

Going to closed circuits is certainly not going to give you vastly more GPU performance required to render extremely demanding ray tracing and the bare minimum framerate expectation is 60FPS, unlike Horizon 5.

You're equating potentially lessened asset streaming of a closed circuit racer with finding lots more raw GPU performance for a GPU intensive operation like ray tracing. An incorrect assessment..

You might get less SSD demand and perhaps somewhat less RAM demand, but neither of those things gives you a lot more GPU fillrate you need for RT. Stripping back resolution and other effects like Horizon 5 does for its 60FPs mode is the only way to do that, and I'm confident that will prove to be very much the case.

ABizzel1714d ago (Edited 714d ago )

Actually, both of you are right to an extent.

As Obscure said, having a smaller more focused area, does relieve some GPU performance, but as ProjectVulcan said it's not this huge gap that developers were once faced with. Open-World games are typically more of a CPU bottleneck than a GPU bottleneck these days thanks to asset streaming, meanwhile, Raytracing is a huge GPU load especially reflections and GI and PT.

I'm with PV on this though, Forza is likely going to be a Dynamic 4K@60fps, and using quarter resolution reflections, but that's not a bad thing as I've said numerous times. The issue is MS and Turn 10 once again pulling this marketing BS trickery instead of just being upfront about it like nearly everyone else is when it comes to their games. They've caused backlash and confusion for no reason, and this is the second time Turn 10 and Forza has done this as we've both said Obscure (it's self-sabotage at this point)

Unrelated to you two, people who don't know tech both fans of said product and fanboys against it should just stay out of tech debates and stop weaponizing them.

Profchaos714d ago

They said it while comparing the hotwheels dlc to motorsport

iplay1up2714d ago (Edited 714d ago )

Microsoft said differently, in their presentation last week. This link makes it very clear "in game Raytracing" https://www.videogameschron...

ABizzel1714d ago

The issue was they showed the PC version off at the showcase (which they shouldn't have done to begin with), and showed RTGI in trailers, and then had to state that in-game RT was there, but RTGI is only in non-gameplay moments.

CobraKai715d ago

This is cool. I was disappointed to learn Forza Horizon 5 and GT 7 did not have in race ray tracing. I thought the reflections looked nice all the same.

CR7JUVE1897714d ago

This is why these games simply have to be Next Gen only. When great developers such as Turn 10, Polyphony, or Playground will get to focus on next gen only, the results will be mind blowing.

This and the Last of Us Remake are exhibits A and B of this.

CobraKai714d ago

100% agree. When they let go of having to include last gen, we will see what current systems can do.

I mean, GTA V has pretty much stayed in the top 10 for the past 3 generations, which is absolutely nuts.
