Rockstar Games Announces Grand Theft Auto VI Development

Rockstar Games writes: Many of you have been asking about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.

What's interesting is how Rockstar says "With every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered." I'm really interested to see what this means in terms of immersion or a persistent world. On one hand you could say GTA V was 'just' an iteration of GTA IV (although of course the online grew to become the game.) But nobody does open world better than Rockstar, the streets of GTA III feel more alive than some recent games so this is definitely at the top of my wish list along with Elder Scrolls VI and Monkey Island 3 by Ron Gilbert.

It will come out on PlayStation 5 and Xbox series X I don't know if we will come out on Series S just depends on how ambitious Rockstar games are

We know for a fact it will come out this generation and then we will get a real release for next generation they can double dip and charge full price twice

It's a pretty big non-announcement, we knew they were working on it, they don't even give us a title or logo, it could be a spin off like London for all we know. I wouldn't be surprised if they just let this out today to distract from the recent #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign that's been making them look bad lately.

Rockstar doesn't tend to make game announcements until they're almost ready to show something. Bethesda used to do that: talk about a new IP and then launch a month later. I imagine they are pretty far along considering GTA V was a PS3 game and RDR2 was a PS4 game.

But they still have a tendency to delay or announce games far to early.
I recall the GTA IV announcement was in 2006 while the game didn't actually release until 2008.
GTA v was 2011 and not released until the end of 2013.

So in two years we should have more details

Rockstar doesn't normally talk about projects that far away. Usually not more than a year, with the exception of the GTA V remasters for current gen. I'd think the likely launch window for GTA VI would be April 2023 or April 2024. That'll be 10-11 years after the release of GTA V.

I’d actually wager on two to three years. If you have read news articles Rockstar expects 14 percent growth in 2024. That equates to about 9 billion in sales. That’s our biggest clue as to the release year because only a GTA game could pull those numbers.

I'm willing to bet it's their big 2023 release. Once they see the declining number of players who are purchasing GTA v on PS5 and series X they're going to want to release it sooner. I'll give them a year with GTA v on the new consoles they can't really push it too much more than that.

I haven’t played more than the first mission or two in any of the GTA games yet . We all knew it was coming as this is their cash cow so no surprise . I’d rather have more Red Dead or Bully or other old IPs or a new IP but yeah

GTA 5 was originally announced November 2011 but didn't come out until September 2013. I don't expect to see this until 2024 so they can remaster it for next gen a couple years later. Maybe late 2023 if they release a barebones GTA Online and add updates later. They released the PS4 remaster in 2014 so if the rumors that this console gen will be shorter than the last then 2025-2026 we should see the next consoles and it would be 1-2 years out for a remaster like they did with GTA 5.
