This was suppose to be a good year for PS3, instead Sony fell asleep at the wheel thinking all they needed was Little Big Planet and Resistance 2 or something.

Microsoft has just steamrolled them with there aggressive price cuts and marketing, and Sony has done nothing but watched, thinking that things would just take care of themselves or something.

But I can easily see the PS3 getting outsold 2-1 maybe even 3-1 this holiday, and if that happeneds, it's over. No way back for PS3, because Sony is allowing the PS3 to take a huge beating and Microsoft will never alow the 360 to take that kind of a beating.

I've been trying to find any possible good news for PS3 recently, there just isn't. The worst thing is that Little Big Planet didn't sell nowhere near the amount it should have. And Resistance 2, who was suppose to compete with Gears of War 2 and was PS3's flagship shooter so far just disappeared. This is all very concerning for the PS3. Things are looking very, very bad.

I'm strongly thinking of giving it up and just jumping to XBOX 360 myself. I don't want to hear anymore excuses. PS3 is getting destroyed, people just don't seem to want that console this gen. And PS3 owners just aren't buying games.

It's time to give it up... No matter what excuses come across. The bottom line is that PS3 gets outsold month after month every time the NPD comes across. Even in Europe where PS3 had some advantage, the PS3 costs about 3 or 4 times as much as the 360, so Sony is making it hard to choose the PS3 everywhere now. Sony has kept there wallets tight, this whole year. Maybe it shows how badly they have been loosing money on the PS3. But the bottom line is they are getting hammered all over the world now.

First off you never had a ps3.
Second you have been saying you are going to get a 360 for months now.

All Sony has to do is cut price and make the PS3 cheaper to manufacture.
But Sony's biggest mistake was killing the 20 gig launch PS3. The 360 arcade was clever having a low entry cost with chances for upgrades later.

Imagine if Sony didn't cut the 20 gig? Since all Sku's dropped about 100 USD, the 20 gig launch system could of possibly been 300 dollars by now. Sony could of sold a wireless reciever, and people would eventually upgrade due to patches and PSN content. Sony instead cuts the 20gig because they think it will hamper PSN sales....

Sony needs a new low cost model, not this 2000 gigs with "X" games bundled.

Lightning this seems very familiar, the 360 was alot cheaper than the ps3 and people claiming it's over for the ps3. Then when the ps3 got a price cut it gained alot of ground. We know the holiday seasons is the best time to do a price cut but I think Micrsoft's only opportunity for a price cut was this holiday season. I don't think they have a good opportunity for a price cut next year.

Sony on the other hand has many options for a price cut for 2009.
Sony can do a price in Feb with Killzone, SF4 and R5 all coming out around the same time. They can do a price cut with GOW3 or GT5 or Uncharted 2. I know about the time FF comes out the ps3 will be cheaper but Sony has to be real confident about the content they have in 09. Plus since the ps3 has Blu ray, the ps3 will sell good even in the slow months where people don't usually by consoles.

Nobody meant sales when saying that. Only MS fanboys are insecure about last gen and are in a pen1s size contest. The year of the PS3 is the year MGS4, Wipeout HD, Socom, R2, LBP GT5 pro and some good multiplats like GTA4 and others were all going to come out. I don't think they mean sales. When they say 2009 is the year of the PSP do you think they mean it will outsell the DS? Probably not. They have gotten the PS3 back on track, and now it's PSP's turn.

2009 is going to be kick ass for the PS3. Killzone2 will probably stay in my system longer then COD4. Theres Heavy Rain, InFamous, God of War 3(!), and a ton of other titles to take up my time.

Personally, I think the PS3 will be fine once the price tag comes down and more awareness of blu-ray spreads, which may happen early next year with the switch from analog to digital tv. Many people will be buying HDTV's then and may then hear of this amazing "new type of dvd player and movie disk called blu-ray that shows really clear on your new tv" as explained to them by electronics store employees :)

But then again, if Sony doesn't get out of it's own way to see what's happening and do not act to lower the price - it really could be a long year for Sony, even with KZ2 and GOW3 coming out

How do you figure? In order for the 360 to stay on top, they have had to cut the price of the console 3 times. Their holiday lineup is lackluster and they are turning to proven franchises that have made their homes on other consoles, by buying them out from under.
I'm not saying that any console is getting hammered, all have good things going for them, but impressions of a console not only come first hand, but through research, unfortunately, alot of gamers take N4G as gospel, creating a biased look one direction or another.

N4G is like FUBU, it's for us, by us, but that does not mean what we say is gold. Most stories reported are relevant, but alot just help fuel the opinion of one individual. In this case, HHG has gotten out of hand a bit, but he is entitled to opinion.

Many 360 owners are grown people like myself who do work for their entertainment. Maybe we've considered which console has the better all around package (in our opinion of course). Everyone knows that the RROD is a problem with SOME older consoles, but here's the kicker...not all. Also, MS has a warranty for them. If a console doesn't overheat in the first three years, then chances are it won't.

Sony makes great consoles, but not everyone prefers them or their games. Halo and Gears make the difference for me, and I can only play them on Xbox.

That's an odd comment because they both will have to pump out games to sell more consoles. I don't think the 360 or Ps3 will ever pass the Wii. That's what will come out on top this gen. Even if you say "But i don't view the Wii as a console" it is, it plays video games just like a Ps3 and 360. Not the same type of games like the two aforementioned consoles and certainly doesn't have the features of the other two but it's still a console.

As for coming in 2nd place i say it's still a pretty close race. As long as it's a close race between Sony and MS for second us gamers who have either of these systems are going to reap the benefits. It doesn't honestly matter about the sales figures on each of these consoles specially if the "race" is close. They'll keep trying to one upping each other, dropping the price, making new IP's, signing new deals with other companies for online support. As long as it's close we'll reap the benefits.

this generation is an endurance race, and i feel that ms is running like a sprint. the longer the race continues, the better chance sony has of catching up and overtaking xbox. remember, we are only in the 2nd/3rd year of this generation, and everyone is already proclaiming a victor. and its true that ms have already played many of its cards, including price drops and two iterations of their flagship titles, halo and gears. now im sure ms has a few cards up their sleeves, but as someone before me said, sony has a lot more options open for 2009 and even more as time passes. sony had a specific 10 year model, and it seems with the current economy, ms is going to have to adhere more closely to that model, rather than the shorter 5 year plan they had planned on.

Your country isn't the only country in the world either. Microsoft announced they have 25 million Xbox 360's installed worldwide as of the end of November. We know that at the end of October the install base in North America (that consists of 3 countries) was 11.8 million. http://www.digital-digest.c... Japan is still resting under 1 million. What are the chances Microsoft sold over 12 million Xbox's in America in November? Probably pretty slim. You know what this means? The rest of the world has bought more Xbox 360's than America.

Its not next gen yet has the most "high tech" controller seen in consoles. The Wii has a online store which can be accessed via the console same as PSN & XBL. Its lacking generally HD output.

I don't know about you, but 08 has been amazing, there have been so many games that my wallet can not keep up. Only a fanboy will say a "game is trash" based off of sales.

If we went based on that, then technically the ps3 would be beating out the 360, considering the ps3 is selling at a faster pace than the 360 was in this timeframe, even with the 360 having a full year head start with really no competition. So should I assume the 360 is trash?

At anybody saying the PS3 is doing bad. The facts are that PS3 is near on level, if not beating 2008 total sales of 360. Even if it is losing by a bit, its still a MASSIVE win based on the fact that the 360 is much much much cheaper.

However you have to remember that MS has said that they should be around the 25 million mark by the end of December if they are not there now.

DVD9 is what is killing POS3 sales, period. People think MS was stupid for not including a built-in HD player, but in fact, they are beating Phony at their own game. As for spinning the numbers, look at the North America NPD numbers and it's been close this year, but the 360 has outsold the POS3 in 2008. Until the PS3 can skip past the Wii in terms of popularity, they're not "dominating." Sales-wise though, PS3's doing great. Being in second place for 2007 and 2008 (so far) is decent enough. I feel bad for Microsoft though.

The 360 should have Never been priced at $199. It temporarily increased sales, but it holds back the pricing of the Premium and Elite SKUs. If Sony beats Microsoft in hardware sales for 2008, then there's no way MS stands a chance in 2009 as Sony has a lot more room for price adjustments.

The 360 is the safer bet right now. It has the combination of games and a very good price point. I think that MS knows their userbase and are making inroads to connect with casual gamers as well. I have both systems and the Ps3 is a technical masterpiece but they made a decision to include things that would make the costs high for the system. Say what you want to about MS but they designed the 360 with price cuts in mind. As far as games go no one can say that the Ps3 exclusives suck. LBP, R2, Uncharted, etc are all decent games but right now Sony doesn't have the luxury of 100 million user base where games can sell 4-5 million everytime out. I have had my Xbox RROD on me 4 times but I still keep coming back for more. As someone who has both systems Xbox Live is a difference maker with multi-platform games. If I was SOny this is what I would do:

1.Bring back the 20 gig system for 250.00

2. Pack in a headset--You will be amazed at the number of people who don't realize that you can use a bluetooth (same with wifi)I prefer a headset. It is hard playing resistance when no one has a mic.

3. Stop packing in games that don't sell well or are limited in appeal. MS has never had a bundle with Halo, GeOW, or any other hardcore game. Keep it simple or give them alot as with the Kungfu Panda/Indiana Jones. What will a 10 year old kid do with Metal Gear Iv or Uncharted?

I think that they bet the farm that lightning would strike twice with Blu-Ray being the must have format. I don't know anyone with a Blu-ray player. People are still content with DVD players.

The Ps3 has so much potential but Sony has taken a half assed approach to the system. The system has been out for two years now and people are still talking about wait until next year. I paid over 600.00 bucks for the original 60 gig and I have been throughly disappointed. Sony thought that they could get by on their name but they have a fight on their hands right now. They can't change the past but they can control what happens from this point forward.

A better competitive comparison is two economy models, the 360 Arcade and the Wii.

Here you see that the Wii, despite the slightly higher price, is vastly more popular. It just goes to show that if the consumer demand does not exist, even a cheap price can't save an unwanted product.

Microsoft doesnt have a lot of price-cutting options left. They'll eventually bundle a hard-drive with the $200 model and perhaps even make online free but those won't result in massive sales increases. They played their ultimate trump card, the $199 price-point, and it has failed to transform the market. The 360 is still in the same spot it was a year ago.

Both the Wii and the PS3, taking into account their respective prices ($250 and $400), are selling well and have plenty of options remaining to cut prices, particularly the PS3, which has sold more in it's first two years than the 360 during it's own first two years on the market, (one of those years without any competition whatsoever).

It's quite clear. The 360, despite being second in sales, is the least wanted console. If not for the drastic price-cut it would still be dead last in sales.

Sony's software say's no. Unlike Microsoft, Sony has a decent amount of 1st party support just in case they are lacking in 3rd party exclusivity. They haven't used up all their resources just yet. If push comes to shove they can lower the price once again. Microsoft on the other hand doesn't have that option, but they do have hope with the new jasper-equipped 360's. As far as software is concerned Sony still has some 1st party that haven't released a next-gen title yet. Team Soho, Team Ico, and Sony Cambridge are among the studios that haven't released a ps3 title. Then you have old ps2 franchises like The Getaway, Sly Cooper, and Jak that haven't made a next-gen transition. To question if 2009 is Sony's last chance is ridiculous.

As time goes on yes Sony becoming this gens leader does diminish but I dont think any of these consoles are on their last chance. I think Nintendo has shown they are going to win hardware sales this gen but PS3 and 360 are doing just fine and will continue to do better. The PS3 is one or two price cuts away from making up all the ground the 360 has on it. Thats not a knock on the 360 because it is the least experienced system and the fact it has accomplished so much this gen with marketshare and getting an excellent diverse library of games compared to Xbox 1 is a success.

Gamers are the real winners this gen because of the selection this competition has forced the big 3 to do.

360 is doing very well and no one can argue the facts. I have played the demo of KILLZONE2 and, from what I played...It is BEYOND ANYTHING OUT!! Yes, it appears to be a gears and halo killer....however, it was just a multiplayer demo. I remember the Killsone1 demo, it tricked me. It was no halo killer!

I am sick of the Gears2 and halo3 trash talk..ps3 is backed into a corner. I love blu ray movies, but we need that one game that says "BUY THIS PS3!" killzone2 HAS TO DELIVER THE GOODS,(and a price drop could really help) and failure is not an option. The only 2 things Sony needs to do is lower the price which seeing the lead both Microsoft & Nintendo are taking Sony has no choice but to lower the price and you know it's gonna happen sooner or later and 2 market better.
I've seen the interviews Sony is silent about the price drop and their not commenting which means that something is cooking behind the walls of Sony so you know they are gonna lower the price by $100/model.

-Money for trophies? That's gonna be a big deal when it comes to buying multiplatform games. Not only can you earn the trophy but you also get money to get awarded w/ content from Home and PSN.
That's gonna be a big deal and a huge selling point for PS3 and more sales for PS3.

-MMOs on consoles? Sony so far are the only ones who seem to be using this genre to the max. PS3 so far is the only console that can use MMOs.
PS3 can use a keyboard and mouse and PSN is a great online service w/ out any lag so it'll run better then what it does on the PC and probably have better graphics.
All I gotta say is if Sony gets WOW, Diablo, and Star Craft it's gonna be another selling point for Sony and they'll attract hella PC users w/ a 30+ million user base across the board just for those games.

R2 is a better game and has better Dev then Gears2. Gears2 might sell more but that "hits" is broke. The 360 and gears are like father and son. AKA Stanford and Son both are junk dealers with a high sale/flaws rate. i see junk and i am going to call it as it is!!

why is there only 8 enemies you can fight at a time on these big "@ss" boards. they have a lot of room on the boards you fight on to have more then 8 enemies to fight at a time. they have alot of background enemies but the foreground is 8 or less. Epic can not even fix/remedy all of these bugs and concerns on their own engine when they are the same as 2006 gears1. This tells me that they are not that good of a dev or the engine sucks. it might be the latter engine "sucks first"!

R2 has but only one of these flaws and that is someone jumping outside the map borders but not completely out of the map. this is what i have seen concerning R2. The things in R1/R2 show how good or great a game Dev they are. Studio of the year is Insomniac.

Need I say more about Black Friday?! Yea, the 360 is stripped down at $199.00 The Arcade version & Wii are in the same boat of what people can afford. But people can later on upgrade to the 60gig HD & 3-months of Live for $99.99. And thats "If" they want to upgrade or not. Yes, you get more with the PS3, but alot of people cannot afford $399.00 for a console. At least you get 2 or more games for the 360 & Wii.

The question remains what the Hell is Sony going to do?!! They need to come out with a plan that's going to push the PS3 sales. The show was typical HHG nothing more or less. Just an outlet for his opinions and reviews of games. Although the funniest part was when he said, “This is why the 360 is showing it can last 10 years against the PS3″. The 360 has 2 more years in it and that's it, EOL in late 2010. The technology in the unit is incapable of holding on longer than that. As for Sony's last chance? LOL. Sony has been narrowing the gap of installed base year over year quite nicely. Seeing that MS has already cut the price to the lowest it can get for a while, as stated by MS themselves, Sony is in a strong position. Next year a price cut is coming to the PS3 and when that happens you will see the PS3 narrow the gap even more if not equal the install base of the 360 worldwide. Once that happens the inevitable will happen and the PS3 will begin to outsell and displace the XBox 360 as the markets' and gamers' preferred platform. It happened with the PS1 and PS2 and will happen yet again with the PS3.

what does 360 have in 2009 that ps3 won't get. Hmmmm Alan Wake? man who knows about that game havent heard news about it in forever who knows when it will come out. Halo Wars? please, Halo is successful only as a FPS and going to RTS is not a good move. It looks hokey as f!ck and you probably even won't see a sequel if it does good seeing as ensemble is going under. Ninja Blade? Hahahaha that looks horrid, what a rip-off of Ninja Gaiden. GTA DLC? The game came out months ago and they're releasing the DLC like 10 months after? No I'm sorry no ones gonna pay $20 for that piece of trash unless you're a die-hard fanboy. Halo:Recon? $30 EXPANSION PACK (not a new game at all)3-4 hours of gameplay, with same combat and looks to be only 1 new weapon. Mass Effect 2 (if it comes out next year) looks like 360's only good exclusive (if it remains exclusive).

I saw this comin, and jumped ships and I'm glad I did. With this kindergarden playground called NXE and it causing RROD, there is no reason to own a DVD9 xbox 360.
