Phil Spencer Praises Epic on Unreal Engine 5 Demo

Phil Spencer took to Twitter to praise Epic for their Unreal Engine 5 demo and shared that Ninja Theory, among others, would be utilizing many of the things shown into their own games.

italiangamer1461d ago

Aaron Greenberg said: "Can only imagine what the new Unreal Engine 5 Engine will look like on the world's most powerful console."

I just smashed my jaw from the cringiness

-Foxtrot1461d ago

So why not get Epic to showcase it at your event?

Why not show it running on an Xbox series x?

Just seems silly when they had a third party showcase last week

RpgSama1461d ago

Greenberg tries too hard all the time, even on the Xbox third party event, just cringe, from the Xbox fridge to him "acting" excited, he's always looked to me like a Suit pretending to be a fanboy.

Zarock1461d ago

It is the worlds most powerful console whether you like it or not. It's just that Sony bought the showcase first and it isn't that great anyways.

darthv721461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

That xbox fridge was great... it showed they had a sense of humor.

Epic and MS working arrangement is one thing. Everyone knows XB will be using UE in their games. I mean Gears was built to showcase UE and MS was talked into upping the memory by Epic in the first place. But that's about it.

The talk now is, if it looked that good running in 1440p and 30fps with no HW assists... just imagine how much better it will look when it does.

Lore1461d ago

Because it wouldn’t look any different. At least not different enough to notice while playing a video game. Maybe if you stared at the screen with a magnifying glass

S2Killinit1461d ago

It must have looked really bad for MS if they are jumping over themselves to “weigh in”.

-Foxtrot1461d ago

@Zarock

But Sony didn't show it, Epic did

Epic chose to do it

Sony didn't even hype anything up over it.

sampsonon1461d ago

@Zarock: Sorry to tell you but they said in the interview after the demo that other platforms, including Xbox SX and highend pc's wouldn't be able to run that demo unless they scaled back the assets. Must suck being an xbox fanboy lol

Sony's SSD is a monster :)

Chris121461d ago

@sampsonon of course buddy, lets see it then as the only person that has mentioned this is you.

CaptainHenry9161461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

I want them to compare the loading times between PS5 and Series X in multiplatform games

PepsivsCoke1461d ago

"[The PS5] puts a vast amount of flash memory very, very close to the processor,” says Sweeney. “So much that it really fundamentally changes the trade-offs that games can make and stream in. And that’s absolutely critical to this kind of demo,” Sweeney explained.

bouzebbal1461d ago

Cause they are world's most stupid.. And also that they have nothing than 3rd party..
The Valhalla 30fps was really the most hilarious thing

VoiceMale1461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

because they were working with sony ....its not that hard to figure out bro....

tim sweeney even said it that they were in a long time relationship working together .

but what does it even matter????
it's an open engine to any and everybody with the fees collect are no more from 3000 gross revenues but to 1 million which makes it even more accessible especially to smaller developers and indie studios

why can Microsoft be excited about it and promote their own products...it like u guys want them to just make a console and say nothing about it and hope it sells itself

u do realize Ms have multiple developers using Unreal right...the most recent is hellbalde 2..why wouldn't they be excited to talk about it?

just last week the talk was that inside xbox is also a ps4 even cause all games will be available for playstation ...now an open engine that will be available to all is bad of Ms to add a fact that they will be utilizing the engine as well on their product that work hard on....the double standards are real

Neonridr1461d ago

because more than likely Sony paid for this reveal. You think Epic just did it out of the kindness of their hearts?

-Foxtrot1461d ago

@Neonridr

Oh please

If Sony paid for it they'd have marketed the shit out of the event and would have hyped it up weeks before, in fact the reveal came out of no where

It wasn't a Sony directed and focused event with UE5 being there, it was an UE5 event, with Epic head lining it and the PS5 being the surprise console to show it on. It came out of the blue.

1461d ago
derek1461d ago

Shorter Zarock " why doesn't anyone like or care about the Xbox, like I do?" LOL.
Shorter Greenberg "please be excited about Xbox, please?". Lol

Drew3451461d ago

I asked myself that same question.

It appears they were caught off guard unexpectedly and are now trying to recover from the news. I mean, if you knew that you had the most powerful platform, WHY would you even care what your competitor showed off? Proof is in the flavor, right? By Microsoft poking their head over into their competitor's camera frame piggybacking off of their news announcement, even after they already had their turn to cover their own platform, makes them seem a little desperate and concerned, i think.

With all the teraflops talk, these guys sure seem rattled.

slasaru011460d ago

Isn't Bright Memory based on UE5? or it's UE4?

DJStotty1460d ago

@Foxtrot

Maybe Microsoft wanted to wait until June to showcase Hellblade 2 using UE5, instead of a game engine, that is on all platforms.

Maybe that is the only thing Sony has to show, as they have no games to showcase.

Who knows.

DJStotty1460d ago (Edited 1460d ago )

@Sampsonon

"Sorry to tell you but they said in the interview after the demo that other platforms, including Xbox SX and highend pc's wouldn't be able to run that demo unless they scaled back the assets."

Source please, i would like to read that interview, seeing as though Hellblade 2 is confirmed to be using the features announced in the tech demo.

And you really think high end PC's and xbox series X, can not run things like global illumination (nothing new) and the other features shown?

Wow, these Sony fans are going to be sooooo hurt when games are showcased utlising UE5 features, and then they come to the realisation, that it was not exclusive to their PS5.

"Unreal Engine 5 will be available in preview in early 2021, and in full release late in 2021, supporting next-generation consoles, current-generation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android."

Source : https://www.unrealengine.co...

Drew3451460d ago (Edited 1460d ago )

@ DJStotty

I think this is what Sampsonon meant:

GamesBeat: Is there any reason you haven’t mentioned Xbox Series X yet? Is PlayStation 5 the lead horse for this in some way?

Sweeney: We’ve been working super-closely with Sony for quite a long time on the storage architecture and other elements. It’s been our primary focus. But Unreal Engine 5 will be on all next-generation platforms, and so will Fortnite.

Sony has done an awesome job of architecting a great system here. It’s not just a great GPU, and they didn’t just take the latest PC hardware and upgrade to it, following the path of least resistance. The storage architecture in PlayStation 5 is far ahead of anything that you can buy in any PC for any amount of money right now. It’s great to see that sort of innovation. It’s going to help drive future PCs. They’ll see this thing ship and realize, “Wow, with two SSDs, we’ll have to catch up.”

https://venturebeat.com/202...

Although Sampsonon was a little harsh with it, if you read the entire interview, Sweeney pretty much let's it be known that it is the SSD that made everything possible. When you couple this with the powerful GPU, as he put it, it performs on an entirely new level to anything we have right now. He also mentions that the engine is designed to downscale from other platforms not able to run the engine on a higher level as a robust piece of hardware. I'd advise reading the entire interview, though. It's very informative.

I honestly don’t see him lasting this gen with Xbox. It hasn’t even been a week since he had to humble himself and now he’s back to his old ways.

I get that he’s PR, but anyone with common sense knows there’s a better way to promote your advantages as a company.

ThinkThink1461d ago

"I get that he's PR"

I'm not sure you do. This is literally his job. Common sense will tell you that Twitter is a way of reaching a wide audience VERY quickly. You can hate the guy all you want but he's just doing his job.

Nyxus1461d ago

@ ThinkThink: but he gives the Xbox brand a kind of trashy image with this kind of talk. Is that really what you want as a company? I'm not a huge fan of Phil Spencer but he seems to have a lot more class at least compared to Greenberg.

morganfell1461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

His job is PR, he is just doing it poorly. Having to backpeddle in your message demonstrates lack of foresight. Good PR people are seamless. They do not come off like a liability or PR for that matter.

FanboysKiller1461d ago

You guys are just making it worse, let the man do his job , I like the fun part about him , it has nothing to do with pr .

LOGICWINS1461d ago

@FanboysKiller Nope. I want him out of marketing. He's hurting the Xbox brand at a time when they're trying to make a comeback. Microsoft needs to bar him from making tweets IMMEDIATELY

AFKghost1461d ago

ThinkThink3h

He's terrible at his job. His responses are the most basic used card salesman spin.

ABizzel11461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

He's been a disaster to the Xbox brand for a while. His antics went unchecked during the 360 days, and he was one of the many catalysts for the awful receptions of the XBO back in 2013. THe's old and stuck in the days of 90's promotions, he needs to be moved from GM of Marketing and they need to hide him deep in the offices of Microsoft, as he is toxic.

rainslacker1461d ago

I think he has more responsibilities than just hyping the product up on social media. I assume he does that job well enough. Probably more high level business stuff that executive types do.

He's never really been a terrible person. He just has a strange way of trying to hype things up. A extreme spin doctor last gen, but he was probably just the messenger most of the time in those cases.

Despite his fumbling this past week or so, I do think he has an enthusiasm which is genuine. He isn't my most hated person in the industry, but he often says things which are easy to dismiss or put into a context that is more realistic.

nix1461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

I've never found Greenberg appealing. He's the epitome of cringe.

The coming gen we'll see a lot of him, I feel. And that's sad news. We barely saw him this gen apart from his occasional "millions of bullets shot" posts.

Greenberg doing damage control already.

“Epic Worked 'Super-Closely' with Sony on PS5 for a Long Time, It's Been a Primary Focus - Sweeney“

As for the the worlds most powerful console, the one where 1st party games must account for last gen consoles.

super_bruno1461d ago

"As for the the worlds most powerful console, the one where 1st party games must account for last gen consoles."

Still the world's most powerful console, he's not lying about that.

1461d ago
rainslacker1461d ago

I'm reading that quote....and if he can only imagine what it may look like, then I question if MS is producing anything that looks anywhere close to what the demo showed. The UE5 demo was really good, but 1st party should already be able to match or surpass it....especially since the demo didn't even use some of the features that XSX is being hyped up for.

Then there's the fact that UE5 isn't like UE3, where everything kind of looks like it's an Unreal Engine game. That whole concept that every game was brown or gray from the PS3/360 gen. Was easy enough to tell the game was made in Unreal. UE4, and probably more so UE5, removed that feeling, and you see a lot of variety to the design style and choices, and every game has a different control input feel to it.

SyntheticForm1461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

Greenberg is so damned irritating.

Usually I just brush this stuff aside but this is the second act of cringe in a week by this guy, and all they're doing at this point is saying "We can do it too" instead of doing what they should do, and actually showing people next-gen gameplay on their new machine.

It's as simple as that - SHOW US. Just show us. Jesus.

russo1211461d ago

Like I said before, entire MS suites are acting like the donkey of shrek movie, "...Pick me! Pick me! Me! Me!..." https://www.youtube.com/wat...

SyntheticForm1461d ago

@Voice

Yes, I'm getting an Xbox Series X, and I'm tired of fanboys spewing nonsense like "You're not PS gamer!" or "You've never even owned an Xbox!" based on a comment that isn't pro whatever or whomever they're aligned with in that moment. That's a seriously dumb thing to charge someone with, no matter their history, and I'd wager that most of the people that regularly post here own or have owned machines from both brands at some point, regardless of who they're presently aligned with.

Keep in mind I'm not belittling him (Aaron Greenberg) whatsoever outside of his occupation, and I'm only judging him within the context of his occupation.

People have grown tired of his particular hype-y, all talk, no walk style. It's irritating and it's nonsensical, and people want to see the real deal, and not the crap he's throwing out.

rainslacker1461d ago

Donnie811461d ago

I don’t have to prove anything silly the series x will prove it’s a better console power wise and entertainment wise. I just gotta enjoy it. You honestly don’t think the series x couldn’t run that demo better? Be honest

PepsivsCoke1461d ago

Ok Donnie81 I'll go ahead and say no I honestly don't think the Series X can run that demo better. There. :)

Donnie811461d ago

PepsivsCoke
So let’s get this straight you don’t think the system that’s hands down more powerful could run the demo better. May I ask your reasoning? If it’s the ssd I gotta say I don’t think that’s gonna do it. The sx has a very fast ssd and better tools to use it than the ps5. You hear devs rave about velocity and how it’s so good it may even cut the speed advantage in half. Ok now let’s not forget power does matter and the Xbox has advantages all across the board. You really are hearing the biggest advantage is the number of compute units. Those cu’s would really help pushing the global illumination and other technics used in the demo even farther while the extra power in the cpu and gpu would allow the sx to run at a higher res and potential FPS. The demo looked great but it would look noticeably better on the sx. Either way thanks for the non hate filled response and fill free to fire back at me.

Babadook71461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

@Donnie81

3% - 18% is not hands down more powerful. The history of consoles bears that out.

But 200% plus faster I/O is hands down superior. Even when X1X had a $100 higher price, and a year longer to wait for release, and 43% more power, it could not beat PS4 Pro on many games. And somehow you have faith that launching at the same time as Pro the XSX can make 3% - 18% matter more than a 130-200% advantage the other way? You guys are crazy. And now you can't even believe it when devs tell it to you straight what those specs mean. It's obvious the XSX could not have run this demo as well as PS5 did.

Donnie811460d ago

This guy down below with his percentages doesn’t have a clue. For one the % isn’t gonna hold up because the ps5 has variable clocks because mark Cerny spent too much money on the ssd and had to gimp the rest of the system. The ps5 straight up won’t hold max clocks you have to choose one or the other. So your argument goes out the window there because you don’t know what your talking about for one and two a dev has to make a massive comprise right out the gate when making games for the ps5 . Do you want a better cpu or gpu. The ps5 is worse than the x1 was last gen and you can bet Sony is working real hard on a ps5 pro right now because they are about to drop a turd on their customers

Babadook71460d ago

" The ps5 is worse than the x1 was last gen and you can bet Sony is working real hard on a ps5 pro right now because they are about to drop a turd on their customers"

Lol. Please explain how PS5 is worse than a X1X. A console that more often than not has lower FPS than the much cheaper Pro and has lost over a dozen head to heads with it also. I'm all ears.

As for clocks rates dropping, that might almost never happen and when it does it will be very slight, as per Cerny himself. These clocks can easily be fully maxed without dropping. Its not boost mode, they are made to max at all times other than theoretical situations.

rainslacker1461d ago

I've actually met both Spencer and Greenburg, and they're both pretty cool overall. Spencer I've met on multiple occassions, both before and after he took over Xbox. sampsonon1461d ago

It's funny that the interview from the UE5 PS5 showcase they said that it would play on other platforms but would be scaled back. Sony's SSD is a beast. That end scene when she's flying is most likely what he was talking about.

rainslacker1461d ago

You know.....that actually sounds almost exactly like what one user here says. Even has the same textual cantor. I've often asked him, or made jokes about he was actually Aaron Greenburg being let out of his cage to talk to the public, but he had to do so anonymously.

Some twisted part of me would love if Sony announced a more powerful "pro" version of their PS5 at launch, just so MS couldn't keep using the "most powerful console" tagline. It's a poor mans attempt at trying to seem like the best, instead of just showing something that can be tangibly done with that power.

I was impressed with how they managed to make the Xbox One X do things that it shouldn't have been able to do given the specs. That's the kind of thing they need to focus on. Talk the specs, but show what those specs can really do. Rockstar games only releases a game every 6 years or so, so you can't expect them to do that for them, and most third party isn't going to bother. MS 1st party so far is capable, but their reliance on staples has gotten a bit tired. MS could really put pressure on Sony by just showing what the console could do, instead of inferring that their console will support a game engine, whose games won't even start coming out until 2022 or 2023, as it doesn't even release for devs to use until next year.

Drew3451460d ago (Edited 1460d ago )

So why didn't he just show it running "on the worlds most powerful console" to begin with? He got the same opportunity as Sony if not more. Why now does this surface into the light rather than waiting for your competitor to run the engine before using their spotlight to talk about your console? He seems very concerned. It's obvious he was caught off guard. He and Spencer seem hell bent on pointing out that their console can run the engine, too. Ok, so why does it even matter then? Are they not confident in their platform's capabilities? Afterall, it was they who raged on about the teraflops talk. So anything Sony shows off shouldn't even phase them, but for some reason, it is doing just that.

starchild1461d ago

In my opinion, it's not an either/or kind of thing. If I was promoting a console I would be highlighting its power, games, features and capabilities.

Now, I totally agree that Microsoft needs to create more good games and focus more on them, I just don't think that means that they shouldn't talk about other aspects of their console.

crazyCoconuts1461d ago

Agree with starchild, it's not that they're marketing these things, it's HOW they market it. It's overly aggressive, sensational, and at times disingenuous. It hurts the brand in my eyes at least

FyBy1460d ago (Edited 1460d ago )

Most funny thing is the "moooore poooower" never worked. Its only marketing BS and only few unlucky guys bought it. If you dont have anything to say, you are always babbling about "power". Majority of most powerful consoles was not success story (or it was lower success than competition had). This story is present in almost every generation of consoles. I dont try to say XSX will not succeed, but that power means nothing. Always and always....ONLY games mattered.

rainslacker1461d ago (Edited 1461d ago )

If HB2 is in development now, how much of the UE5 tech are they really going to use? UE5 doesn't release until late next year, with preview builds going out in the early part of the year. While some of the code will port over, the build process, and especially the render sequence, are completely different between the two. It's not simply a matter of loading up an UE4 save file into the UE5 engine, and then turning on some new features. We'd be talking about months of reworking code, and likely having to scrap a good chunk of it. I remember my last year of school, or some class I took(can't remember), UE went from 3 to 4, and while I knew how to work in UE3, the school was required to use UE4 for teaching due to licensing. My last semester, and I basically had to relearn how to use the engine as the work flow process was completely different. Same is going to be true here based on what I've heard.

While some of the features shown are available to be licensed separately and can be plugged into any game engine which supports such a thing, or even used as encapsulated tools, is MS really going to spend that kind of money on licensing these tools for early gen games, especially when they're also being built for this gen where those technologies aren't going to be supported?

There's a lot to scrutinize over Phils message. At least Greenburg was just talking in general, while Phil decided to attach it to a specific product. Or, you could look at it like he's saying that one day, they'll be using this game engine, and bringing what was seen to the XSX. But, isn't that kind of like them talking about Cloud tech early this gen. years away from release, and by the time they start releasing it, the gens halfway over. At the least in the latter case here, it won't be a one and done deal, but a growth as time goes on.

So, yeah, there is a difference between the two. Greenburgs just sounds like typical PR for the layman. Phil sounds like another stretching of the truth, or outright lie, or HB2 is much further off than some Xbox fans may be expecting.

ThinkThink1461d ago

I think it depends on which "side" you're on. Microsofts PR has been on point lately with the exception of the the 3rd party reveal event. Whether they take that feedback and learn from it remains to be seen but they've been doing a stellar job of trickle feeding us next gen information when we're all thirsty for it.

waverider1461d ago

Beside 3rd party games, where the teraflop PR campaign failed big time. aaron greenberg tweets are terrible... the way microsoft reacted to the unreal engine was sad. Sometimes is better keeping the mouth shut. UE5 isnt exclusive... And there is another problem, Microsoft isnt the same position then sony... Maybe the july event helps. But, again, they better have more then Forza, Halo and gears.

crazyCoconuts1461d ago

Just wait until Sony drops the PS5 info and MS immediately follows with a combination of "me too" and "not important", depending on the feature. I'm cringing in advance. Phil is the master of the back handed compliment. "I really like how Sony focused on X. That's why we did Y even better"

It works for the people that follow them mostly. These are already people invested in the brand, and supposedly excited enough about it to want to know what's going on with it that they'd subscribe to their twitter feed for it.

When those tweets make it out on the news sites and comment forums is where you see most of the cringe.

There has been an uptake of criticism on MS twitter accounts lately though. Probably due to their general marketing practices, and of course, the next gen looming heightening the console wars. but overall, outside some occurances, their twitter accounts are generally pretty positive.

im not really surprised by that, shes always been more a "let me talk about something else than what u want to know" kinda gal

If what they are doing is that good, what’s the point of hiding the true story?

She's a caricature of the shareholders.

PRIMORDUS9h ago

"Shareholders" I call them cancer, they are already rich to begin with but need more and more. It's like a disease, with no cure.

Leeroyw7h ago

I own shares in game companies. I'm not anything near a major share holder. I just want them to make good games and be successful because of that. I think it's the senior management that's the problem. They are the ones that should be making it clear to the shareholders what creates growth and ensures a future of their business. Not this weasle words garbage that she did on the interview. It was horrific. I don't know a shareholder that would be happy with any of them for this.

Profchaos6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Same and I'm not rich by any stretch like most people's I'm just trying to keep my head above water these days most company's shareholders are made up of everyday people it's amazing how companies think we want something but the reality is we don't.

Disney are probably the worse at the moment it's shareholders voted on ending a lot of the crap and outing the current execs the execs turned around and said no we disagree with the shareholder vote

PRIMORDUS1h ago

I meant at the rich fucks who have millions in the bank already. They are making so much per year, that if they don't make what they are expecting they go into a panic, when in reality it will not even hurt them at all. Those are greedy assholes.

Yea, it was and it’s insulting that they think we’re dumb enough to fall for this. Look, the truth was you took a gamble on these studios and while they released some games to critical praise and great reception they just aren’t bringing in a ROI. Be transparent, you’re not a politician.

Just tell everyone you spend money on projects big and small and when money isn’t being made you go over the potential of revenue a studio can bring in vs those that can’t and make the hard decision to chop them.

She says this whole thing about “success” doesn’t fit one meaning for each studio. Well yea, a small budget production isn’t going to expect to sell the same as a large budget production.

One thing I wish they did though was let Tango be an independent studio.

TheGamingHounds11h ago

disheartening to see no regard for the human cost of business anymore
the bad decisions and judgements of these CEOs severely impact the frontliners
these fake responses are just salt on wounds

RoadRacer10h ago

imagine havin the audacity to say "we need more games like hifi rush" right after closing the studio that made it lol
followin up with this show of "deflecting every question" was in poor taste

Alot’s changed in 25 years. We have games with $300 mill budgets, people not interested in games other than Fortnite and Minecraft, the older generation of gamers giving up the hobby or dying off, a period of super bad inflation where the industry decided to hike up prices on games, Gamepass harming game sales, GaaS games being pushed left and right with obnoxious monetization and worse looking/playing (Suicide Squad vs Arkham Knight).

The industry is just shite right now. Games ain’t selling, games cost massive amounts, businesses can’t bleed money and this is what happens. Part of it is on them and part of it is on consumers not buying.

Yi-Long1h ago

Consumers ain't buying because of what they're selling; There is no new SSX or Burnout, everything is now Online Required, everything is 'service', etc.

Indies are still delivering the goods, perhaps even better than ever, because those are often the guys and gals who know what they want to make and just make that and hopefully we dig it as well and support it ...

... but when you look at those multi-million budget AAA games, are they improving on what we have had before? Is the new Forza Motorsport better than a Forza Mototsport 4? Is Halo Infinite better than Halo 3? Is Dragon Age 2 such a huge improvement over the first Dragon Age? Etcetc.

Yeah, graphics have gotten better, worlds have gotten better, but I think a gaming generations stands or falls with diversity and experiences, and a few gens ago we had access to whatever we wanted, so if we wanted a boxing game we picked up one of the boxing games, if we wanted snowboarding we'd pick up one of the snowboarding games, if we wanted to do a rythm game we had DJ Hero, or Guitar Hero, or Rockband. If we wanted to sneak around we had Splinter Cell or MGS or whatever.

We had variety and we had options, and that makes or breaks a generation, imo. You're in a foodcourt of games and they're serving all kinds of different cuisines, and so you'd pick and choose whatever you felt like that day.

Right now, you're in a restaurant, and you're only allowed to pick from one menu, and there's a dress-code, and you have to register, and you have to stay in your seat, etc etc.
